By it's name alone, one should expect MODERN art, which might not be everyone's "thing," so you should go there with an open mind knowing that you are about to see things that are different, thought provoking, unique and possibly even confusing or that push the boundaries on what art actually is. The pieces here are all well curated and expertly presented with the opportunity to rent an audio guide that will help explain what you are seeing and who the artists are. If you don't like to wait on line, it is best not to come with a backpack (they will make you check it, and that line can be pretty awful) and take the escalator over the stairs. Start from the top floor, work your way down, and expect crowds (especially during high tourist seasons and around more famous pieces).

This is getting 5 stars due to the trip it took my brain on. Half the stuff just makes your question reality, and the other stuff is actually pretty neat! Loved how they had famous works by Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh, Claude Monet, and Jackson Pollock to name a few.

I do wish it were a bit more affordable. Became a member so I could hopefully avoid thinking about it. Very exciting when there's a huge, once-in-a-lifetime, i-was-there-for-Artist-X event, and they have a pretty good film program for members as well.

Amazing and one of a kind artworks and films
Theater in basement

But the building constant add ons are a bit distracting from the artwork

Why are their escalators sooo narrow

The Museum of Modern Art is an amazing experience if you love art in general, and modern art in particular. This is one of my favorite museums in the world, not just in New York. I highly recommend it!

Went on Friday at 4 pm to get in for free. It's worth it but be prepared for the craziness. There are so many new visitors arriving at once that it turns into a madhouse for the first hour with swarms of people everywhere you go. It can be difficult to see popular pieces since there will be such a large group around it.

The place it's self is really nice and wonderful. The art to me seemed to be hit or miss but ultimately that would differ depending on your taste in art ofcourse. I would definitely recommend going especially on the free days and don't forget to check out what films are playing as well which are also free on free day

Love this place as it has extensive art collection in this multi-level building! My favorite was Van Gogh's and Picasso's of course. But it also has beautiful modern art. Even if I'm not well-versed with art, I had a great time going around the museum. It somehow inspires me to be more creative.

Always a must see when I visit New York! This time the Charles White retrospective was amazing! So much wonderful art, so be sure to give yourself lots of time to get through it. Also one of the most efficient cost checks I've experienced in a museum; I came in January so the lines were pretty long, but the staff really moved us through!

The fifth floor boasts some fantastic collections, but try not to visit during when it s free admission after 4 PM on Friday (especially if you have an appreciation for art). It is even more filled with tourists and it s a nauseating experience to navigate around the overcrowded museum.

Overall the museum has a great atmosphere, boasts excellent works of art, and I highly recommend a visit, just not on Fridays after 4 PM.

Found out about this place in an article on an obscure website about places not to miss in NYC. Located in the SoHo district, this trendy, quirky store is located amidst the fashion district retail area and offers an amazing, unique and one-of-a-kind selection of all kinds of goods from decorations, greeting cards, toys, clothing and accessories, art, jewelry, electronics, games, etc - something for everyone! We picked up some great Christmas gift buys and so glad we made the trek!

Excellent children's education program. Thoughtfully divided age groups, hands on activities, direct appreciation of diverse art. Then a fun mini film festival every month with discussion, all perfectly calibrated for children.

Art was brilliant, so many people piled into the gallery you couldn't see a thing. Badly organised and staff screaming at people the whole time. More interested in making money. So far removed from any other gallery visit and not enjoyable. Should limit the amount of people they let in at one time.

To be honest, I've heard so much about MoMA my whole life that I was expecting much more.

I wish I'd spent two days at the metropolitan instead.

The exposition on the 5th floor is great and the temporary exhibition on the 6th was nice, but most of the rest was Ok at best. But, I'd you do go there, the cafe on the second flood is quite expensive but worth it, because the food is great.

MoMA is an amazing place and if you're reading a review, you probably already know what to expect in terms of the exhibits and collections. I'll skip that, and give some tips instead.

1. Plan for at least two hours. We spent three hours in there on our first visit, until we were ushered out at closing, and we saw less than half the exhibits. At less than two hours, you're not really going to have a chance to see anything.

2. There are *long* lines to get tickets, check your bags, and well known exhibits such as the Monets and the Van Goghs are incredibly crowded. Ideally, get your tickets from the ATM style machines, don't bring a backpack, and look at other things until there's a lull in the crowds before heading to see Starry Night.

3. Wear comfortable shoes. After the first hour, my feet were killing me because I went in boots. The next trip was with old and comfy Adidas shoes, and it was a lot nicer.

4. If you want to buy quirky gadgets, the MoMA design store across the road has some great picks, apart from the stuff in the main gift shop.

5. If you're on a holiday, try and come on a working day. Weekends are packed, and a weekday trip will be much more pleasant.

Hope that helped!

The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) is an art museum located in Midtown Manhattan, New York City, on 53rd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues.

Library
The MoMA library is located in Midtown Manhattan, with offsite storage in Long Island City, Queens. The non-circulating collection documents modern and contemporary art including painting, sculpture, prints, photography, film, performance, and architecture from 1880 present. The collection includes 300,000 books, 1,000 periodicals, and 40,000 files about artists and artistic groups. There are over 10,000 artist books in the collection. The libraries are open by appointment to all researchers. The library's catalog is called "Dadabase". Dadabase includes records for all of the material in the library, including books, artist books, exhibition catalogs, special collections materials, and electronic resources. The Museum of Modern Art's collection of artist books includes works by Ed Ruscha, Marcel Broodthaers, Susan Bee, Carl Andre, and David Horvitz.

Additionally, the library has subscription electronic resources along with Dadabase. These include journal databases (such as JSTOR and Art Full Text), auction results indexes (ArtFact and Artnet), the ARTstor image database, and WorldCat union catalog.

Architecture and design

MoMA's Department of Architecture and Design was founded in 1932 as the first museum department in the world dedicated to the intersection of architecture and design. The department's first director was Philip Johnson who served as curator between 1932 34 and 1946 54. The next departmental head was Arthur Drexler, who was curator from 1951 to 1956 and then served as head until 1986.

An epic world class museum, goes through yet another incredible renovation. The delicate, yet provocative, addition by the renowned architecture firm Diller Scofidio and Renfro, expands the building to handle even more visitors, while paying respects to the previous design, and introducing magically minimal moments throughout the space.

The only floor that was worthy was the one with impressionist paintings. The rest of the museum didn't feel very impressive, and was definitely not worth the price. Half of the museum was also closed for renovations when we visited, which had no impact on the pric whatsoever.

The works are fantastic, the spaces were terrible. It was so crowded on a Thursday morning. Way too loud. People are basically yelling at each other, everyone is just walking around with their phones taking pictures. Just a loud, crowded, unenjoyable, and unmanaged museum experience. Left with a headache.

Great!

An E type Jaguar on display, plus the fantastic room with starry night, one of the prettiest strudels ever by Gauguin, a beautiful beach picture by Seurat, the two huge Rousseau pictures (the dream, and the sleeping gypsy woman and the lion) and more - probably the most beautiful room in an art museum that I have ever seen. And they have a nice cafe and a great museum shop for gifts (my favorite shop in NYC).

Always a nice place to visit while in the city. I love that they have their free Friday evenings but it does get super packed. Rather than waiting in line for the opening at 4, I like to wait until 4:30-5pm to head over so there's not so bad a wait in line if any and that still gives you plenty of time to see everything.

The new Moma space is lovely, spacious, and easy to navigate. I found the organization of permanent and rotating collections to be a little bit harder to separate than I remember but all in all a great experience.

Went on a friday and did the free ticket line... totally worth it! All the art is breath taking. Such an inspiring place. We even got to eat there, the food was better than expected but expensive for the portion.

They have Van Gogh's Starry Night, I don't really need to say more than that. They also have another lovely Van Gogh the name of which escapes me. Quite a few works by Matisse, Rembrandt, Renoir, two Piet Mondrain, including the very iconic one which everyone knows, a thought provoking work by Francis Bacon and just really so many things that I can't even begin to name them all. The museum shop is also very nice and representative not only of the art in the museum but also contains lot of just neat little baubles that would make nice gifts for anyone you know who isn't an address lover. I had an amazing time and could go over and over and still notice something I hadn't noticed before.

All time favorite! I may recommend go from the top first, so you can enjoy the modern arts development and all great stunning world known master piece. Small tip: if you come to New York on Friday, you can get free admission around 4 for Uniqlo sponsor Ed Friday night events. The line is pretty long and I would recommend go there half an hour in advance.

It's excellent the museum is free on Fridays after 4! Art should be available for everyone to enjoy. I was impressed with the diversity of the art! The museum was very welcoming. If I'm ever in NY I will defenitly visit again!

It was a phenomenal experience except for the VR part. I didn t even get half way through he line without a lady coming up to me and my parents me and my sister wouldn t be able to experience VR because we where under the age of thirteen and because Are brains weren t fully developed . So my request would just be to put a sign next to the entrance of the VR exipit just so we know. So take note that if you or your child is under the age of thirteen, you can t use VR. Thank you for your time and have a wonderful day.

Great exhibit of art. Convenient cafeteria and beautiful atrium. Could use more and better signs or arrows to follow. So you keep going in the right direction without getting into another room, turned around and miss one room. Also should show the area that is closed when you get to that floor not make you walk to it to find it roped off and closed. There is enough walking without extra.

Six stories high featuring modern art. Some of the artworks though might require more understanding of the artists conveyance of their message. There is definitely something for everyone to appreciate and enjoy. The place can be busy but there are nice quiet areas overlooking nice skylines to sit back and relax. Throw in the usual coffee shop and store - have fun!
