The tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and included interesting personal facts and tid bits to make the information have more substance. He did very well dealing with kids and obnoxious people. The house itself is a architectural masterpiece. Loved going. Would not go again unless I was able to tour the whole house and people able to immerse myself in the home.

Experienced the Living History Tour with Patrick McAleer as Mark Twain's coachman. He was awesome - humorous, knowledgeable and above all, passionate about Mark Twain and literature. It cost $25 but was worth it. The house is beautiful and explained with rich stories of Clemens and his family. A must-do in Hartford.

The tour was fantastic! The house is amazing! The tour guide we had was the gossiping maid she was great! Very informative. To be in the actual home of Mark twain and his family and where he wrote his famous books was surreal. Learning about history hands on is fun. And u can go next door for a reduced admission price to the Stowe house. We didn't go in there because it was to late.

We saw a sign on the freeway (I-84) on a recent trip to Boston, and decided it would be worth a stop to get out of the car & see the house & museum. Glad we did it. The signage from I-84 was fairly easy for us to follow to get to the house (but I'll be honest, I was thankful that we had everyone in the car looking for Mark Twain House signs, as that helped a lot). It was only a few miles (if that) from the freeway, so it was not far out of our way to stop there. We paid our admission, and had a wonderful tour of the house from a very knowledgeable staff member. It was quite the house to see, well worth the stop. Unfortunately, we did not get to see the film on Twain, nor the museum, as we had spent nearly 90 minutes there just getting our tickets & doing the tour, and it was an unplanned stop over. I would recommend it to anyone - it's a very interesting home and it's cool to see it. I will agree with other reviewers, the entrance fee to see it ($19/adult) is on the high side, but I also understand that there are expenses to maintain the facility. It would be great if they could figure out some alternative fundraising events that they could do that would help to raise more money for the facility, so that they could lower the admission prices, allowing more people to enjoy this treasure. Lower admission prices may bring more visitors into the facility, as well. But overall, I'm glad it's available to be toured, and nearly restored to how it was when the Clemens family lived there.

Interesting site for Mark Twain fans. House is quite dark inside. Museum is fascinating.
Cafe attached to the museum is very disappointing- no hot drinks available when we visited on a chilly autumn day. The pre packed food was unappealing.

The house itself is neat to walk through, and the museum is a fitting memorial to the sardonic icon. Well worth a visit if you're in the area and like Twain. The souvenir shirts weren't in my size, and I was disappointed they didn't have one that said "Twain Wreck" showing him hosting a pint of whisky and running a steamboat aground. Somebody should make that a thing.

The surrounding area is a good place to walk around. Inside the museum is spacious, and we had a nice tour of exploring inside the house. Memorable was seeing the rooms, furniture, and spaces that are preserved. It is a must place if you love Mark Twain.

I love the Mark Twain House. It takes you back to the glory days of Hartford. It has been wonderfully restored and maintained. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and you can tell that they take great pride in their work. They also host special events like The Mouth. The gift store and museum sections are very nice. Mark Twain loved cats as well, so that s always a positive in my book.

Visited with my parents and my SO's parents and we had a blast. We took the Butler Tour and it was amazing. The Butler was such a wonderful character, the actor who played him was excellent. But even a standard tour would have been incredible. The restoration of the house is breath taking. I loved all the beautiful wall paper and stenciling. I would highly recommend a visit here.

The Mark Twain House & Museum is a definite must see and visit attraction of Hartford, Connecticut!!!

The historic home of Mark Twain, one of America s most respected and renowned storyteller is only accessible through guided tours.

In October of 2020, my wife and I had the pleasure of visiting the Mark Twain House & Museum and we absolutely enjoyed our tour experience!!!

We learned a great deal about the history of Mark Twain s House, Twain & his family, and the staff that helped manage and care for the home.

We also viewed a few furnishings owned by the Twain family and visited the room that Twain used to write his famous Tom Sawyer & Huckleberry Finn stories.

My wife and I definitely owe a great deal of thanks and appreciation to George, our tour guide.

George made sure that our tour of the Mark Twain House & Museum was an absolute fun and worthwhile experience!!!

Went for the first time today. $20 ea to get general admission, more if you want a personalized tour. Our tour guide was great, very knowledgeable and she encouraged questions. The house is unique, restored nicely but not fully, work in progress for the last 25yrs but still worth seeing. This isn't really for kids, not much for them and you can't touch anything inside the house. The grounds are beautiful and what has been rehabbed is beautiful

They have been restoring this place for the last 50 years. It really shows, everything is well put together. Things in the home appear to be original or a very good reproduction. The tour guides have excellent knowledge about the property. Our group asked many questions and the tour guide had answers for all of them. Picture taking is not allowed inside the house.

Awesome experience, I was here for the Connecticut horticulture conference at the attached museum and it was a great venue. At lunch they gave everyone a tour of the house and it was amazing. Tour guide was great. Don t ask about if it is haunted, they didn t seem to like that.

Entry is $ 20, time groups are collected and guided tours. At home outside the group can not walk. The house is three-storey, in excellent preservation. It was forbidden to take pictures in the house, which upset me. At the museum there is a souvenir shop, a museum with various exhibits. We liked!

Despite being located in a largely Latino city, almost nothing is in Spanish in the museum or house. People come from around the world to visit, but it's only accessible to the small percentage of people who speak English.

I helped my son move from Spokane, WA to Hartford, CT and despite the weather we made the trip ahead of schedule with a day to spare. We decided to discover Hartford and Mark Twain's house proved to be a very worthy stop. I recommend the guided tour with a fellow named "Dan" who brought not only the homes history to life, but the surrounding Hartford area as well. Definitely a 10 out of 10 experience for me.

Just a great afternoon visit to Hartford and having fun gaining insight to the Mark Twain home history and Mark Twain the person, the family. An unforgettable story teller to his family and of course famed author of classics we should all include in our libraries.

This is the samuel clemens house (mark twains orginal name) and you can get a guided tour for ~$20 an adult. They don't allow self tours so the guided tour is the only way to go. They also have several free exhibits and a movie that plays at regular intervals. We did the standard guided tour which lasted about 1 hour and we walked through each room of the 3 floor house. There is also a living history tour conducted by actual characters who lived in the house, that sounds cool but we didn't make it in time for one. The guides are friendly and knowledgeable

the tour was fine. I was disappointed that we couldn't take pictures inside the house so that lowered my enjoyment experience. The guide was knowledgeable. The architecture is amazing it was a good value for the money. And you figure it the money that you pay goes into the upkeep and salary so it's a good investment

Very pleasant experience. Staff was extremely friendly and very knowledgeable. It was a perfect stop to pass the time before my flight out of Hartford. I learned so much and was taken aback by the architecture!

Walk through the same floors and visit the same rooms as Mark Twain did when he was writing his novels, now considered classics. A conservatory (greenhouse) is made to look the same as when Mark Twain lived there and contains many unusual plants. Overall a great place!

Living history tour and guide Patrick made our experience in Mark Twain house super informative and fascinating!
First of all I am so grateful for the chance to see In my own eyes those amazing house and to caught the experience of just being Mark Twain guest.
Also the guide Patrick was the very gentleman and well educated and prepared. The whole tour was like the living experience indeed.
Our guide even greeted us in our native language which is Russian. Unbelievable!!!
The tour time was about an hour and fifteen minutes. Within this time we traveled through a whole house - three flours and a lot of rooms. Tour tickets cost us $25 per person.
I was a little sad though because first, there is absolutely no pictures or filming allowed and of course no touching the things rule.
However the stories of great writer Mark Twain was remarkable, because he was very talented and remarkable man himself.
Thank you!

Fantastic, we did the actor tour and it was awesome. Like to do it again with a different character. We had the oldest daughters character, like to hear the view from the butler. I give it two thumbs up.

As a big Mark Twain fan, this was a treat! Highly recommend the reenactor-guided tours. Our guide, Samuel's daughter Suzie, was so knowledgeable! She made the tour especially interesting with little tidbits of information you wouldn't know to ask, all shared from Suzie's perspective. Truly a delight!

Touring this house was great. Learning about his life and family was really very interesting. Looking st all the artifacts was pretty cool. These tours are not really good if you have young kids or elderly parents with you, too many stairs and lots of standing.

Mixed feelings about this place.

Mixed feelings about this place.
Great gift shop and visitor center.
It is one of many houses, houses Mark Twain lived in.
Obviously this is a great source of pride, and employment for Hartford.
But Mark Twain/Samuel Clements died in Redding Connecticut.
I also believe he is buried in a family plot in New York.
So for some reason,Mark Twain turned his his back on Hartford Connecticut. The man headed for pastures greener.
Maybe he had bad memories here,it was an unlucky house.
Maybe he didn't get on with the neighbors.
We will never know.
Just bare this in mind when visiting the house.
