Pleasantly surprised by having a 2 for 1 deal to see the Harriet Beecher Stowe house right next to Twain s house. It was so nice to be educated and have a tour by a re-enactment of his daughter telling the story. Definitely take the tour this way. It s more fun and colorful. Really happy!

This is a great destination for adults. The docent we had been was very courteous, engaging and we'll informed. Some of the guides dress in period costume, such as the butler.
There is no touching allowed so not a good place for kids. The lighting is very dim in the house, apparently to keep it as Historical as possible. There is no photography of any kind allowed.

The price was 20$ for adult and 11$ for kid, the tour was quick and NO photos inside (without flash of course). I wouldn't drive 100 miles to know that I'm not allowed to take photos. Dissapointing.

It was a great experience! It was interesting to learn about the history of the house and how it was used by Twain and his family. The tour guide was very informative, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic.

Me and my girlfriend love this place. We have been through the house twice. The house is restored to beautiful condition. The craftsmanship is outstanding. They have the desk that he wrote Huck Finn at!

Very very interesting to see the home of 'Mark Twain' and to hear about his home life whilst In it. The architecture is quite different, innovative and at times equally as beautifully charming as it is quirky. The interior design, the wall/ceiling stenciling in particular are worthy of an entire book. Our young guide, Ben, was absolutely brilliant, well spoken, knowledgeable on many aspects of Twain's life and home. He alone made the tour come alive. Of course, there is an extensive fascinating museum before consisting of wonderful displays and films which are on the first floor. Also on the first floor is a fabulously fun bookstore which is a must-see. To arrive to the second floor there is both an elevator and a stunning set of new stairs. There is a bright and airy Cafe with sandwiches, yogurt, cookies, coffee, teas and cold drinks. Seating indoors and out in a lovely garden which leads to the Twain Mansion. NOTE: The Harriet Beecher Stowe Mansion is right on the same lot and MUST be seen immediately after. [ We saw it right after looking at the Twain house, then went back to Mark Twain Museum to finish looking at exhibits in 1st FL and buy goodies in the Bookstore. ]

Very beautiful home of the famous US writer who resided here for 17 years. A guided tour is only $20 and lasts about hour and is worth it. Mark Twain was a big fan of cats and dogs and his dogs were called i know , you know , don t know . Some of his cats were named sin , satan , ashes He also said If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but deteriorate the cat.

It was interesting to look at the life and heartache of author Mark Twain. He was indeed a very interesting character, especially towards the end of his life. I highly recommend this museum as it is particularly informative!

We took the historical tour led by Suzy Clemons , the eldest daughter. The house itself is really well put together and very interesting. I really felt like we had a good idea of life in that time. And though the character clearly adored her father, we got a picture of the writer that was not rose colored. It was a little pricey, but well worth it.

It's a wonderful tour. The Mark Twain House is a wonderful example of homes of the Victorian era. The home gave me a sense if how Samuel Clemmon, and his family would have lived. I definitely would recommend this tour, more so to appreciate the beauty and sensibility of the design in a Victorian home.

Mark Twain House is a jewel of Hartford, CT. The house is restored and many of the items that he purchased for his home have found their way back. I believe that there is still original work done by Louis Comfort Tiffany in the home.

A fairly recent addition to the property is a museum with classrooms, gift shop and cafe. The staff is engaging and holds different programs such as the Clue game I recently attended, and Ghost walks that are especially popular around Halloween.

I understand that approximately 10% of their collection is shown at any given time. This creates a desire to visit often.

I highly recommend many visits. However it should be noted that the house itself is not handicapped accessible. The museum is.

An impressive tour. There were so many things that I did not know about Sam Clemons, and that is one of them. The house is gorgeous: The Tiffany's had a hand in decorating the house. And I never knew why he moved to Hartford. If you are interested in Sam, definately take the tour. You won't be disappointed!

My family is not interested in visiting this historic place. But as I'm a big admirer of Mark Twain, I really wanted to visit this spot. So, I rented a car and drove from NYC to Hartford, solely to visit the Mark Twain house. And, man, it was worth it! I absolutely loved the tour and it was so great to actually visit the place that was shaped by the vision of this phenomenal writer. Even though the exhibition that you can visit before entering the house, is interesting, it is the house itself that is really overwhelming. I think that even people who don't know his work will enjoy visiting this wonderful mansion. Its architecture, the beautiful interior, the magnificent design, ... It's just great!

Fabulous! We purchased the reenactor your with Susy Clemens performed by Chantelle. She told the history of the house from this eldest daughter's perspective. Now, I'd like to go back and do the tour again from the butler's perspective as a free man of color. The house is fabulous and there was something for everyone's enjoyment!

This is an absolutely beautiful mansion, kept just as it would have been enjoyed in the 1880's. The guides are very knowledgeable and quick to point out details which might be overlooked and stories which could be forgotten. It's a great experience.

We visited the Mark Twain house in Hartford with some friends. I really didn t know what to expect and was, quite honestly, not sure whether I would enjoy it. I was very, very wrong. Samuel Clemens a.k.a. Mark Twain, Was certainly an interesting character. His life was full. Some sadness, some devotion some inspiration. His home, now a museum, was decorated with period furniture and the tours were guided by live actors and actresses bringing the entire experience to life.

House is beautiful, majestic but tour was rushed. I suggest distancing time between tours. Guide could have had better annunciation. I made the mistake of needing to go to the bathroom and wasn't allowed to return. They're afraid of things being stolen I take it. Overall, it's an absolutely splendid house. I also suggest handing out pamphlets to visitors as they tour the house. This will only help the guide provide a better presentation.

This was our first stop in Connecticut & we knew we d want to check out Mark Twain s house. We learned so much about his work, personal life, & personality. Our tour guide, Diane, was enthusiastic and clearly excited to teach us the history of the home and of its old owners. This is a must see when your in the area if you like history- added bonus that Harriet Beecher Stowe s house is right next door!

At first I wasn't completely convinced the museum/tour would be entertaining but I quickly realized that I was wrong. I found the museum and tour truly fascinating and would recommend it to anyone traveling to Hartford, CT. The tour was well worth the money and the restorations done on the property are fantastic. Only a couple of rooms in the house were roped off which allowed you to roam a bit in rooms (no touching of course!).

This is a "must see" when you're in Connecticut. Twain's home is a treasure. The guides tell the story of Twain's life and how the house reflects his travels and family. The house is, like Twain, charming and eccentric.
