Our guide was very knowledgeable about pretty much everything Mark Twain related. He had a great sense of humor and was easy to connect with from the start! Great guy, my daughter had a great time asking him a million questions about pretty much everything.

Wonderful tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable about the writer and his family life. His wife had an eye for tasteful decorating and she did a wonderful job. The home is preserved well and shows how they lived. Beautiful!

We took a tour with a historical figure (the Butler). It was outstanding! So much history and information about the Clemens family and insight based on the butler's point of view. So glad we decided chose this tour.

Of course this is a must place to visit if you are interested in culture, history and famous writers. Very interesting and informative tour. Guide is super friendly and knows a lot! Museum as well. Free parking. Clean restrooms.

Absolutely loved this tour! As long time fan of Mark Twain, I have always wanted to visit his home and it did not disappoint! Michael our tour guide was great and very knowledgeable but if you get a chance to go on the living history tour make sure you do. Another tour was ahead of us and it looked fantastic. Drove 2 hours out of the way for the visit and well worth the trip. In my opinion $20 per person is reasonably priced considering the cost to preserve this magnificent home.

prices are 20 for adult 11 for a child and 18 for seniors. It is a lot. also there were only tours which was horrible for us since my father does not speak English. In the end we did not take the tour

The house and grounds were wonderful,
the tour guide not so much. Grace was very condescending, kind of rude and very lacking in people skills. One gentleman in our group of senior citizens felt ill, he tried to leave quietly so as to not disturb the tour but was called out loudly by Grace who made certain that everyone in the group was aware of what he was doing. She loudly (and arrogantly) stated that "if you leave you cannot come back" and then (also loudly and arrogantly) gave him the ultimatum of "in or out what's it gonna be".
To be honest it made everyone in the group uncomfortable to see him put on the spot in this manner. When our group leader wanted to make sure that the gentleman was OK Grace made sure to call her out in the same loud and arrogant manner. It was actually embarrassing. I felt like Grace thought that being a docent in the Mark Twain house placed her in an entirely superior class of people and she was going to make sure everyone realised it was so. Her way of doing this was to be condescending and treat us all like children. This tour could and would have been so much better with a polite, personable and even somewhat understanding tour guide.

Really interesting tour of the building with good history on his life in Hartford as well as afterwards. Worthy of bringing out-of-town visitors for sure. I wouldn't go back without them - it's not that deep - but I'd do it again with their excuse.

As a lover of literature and Twain especially, I'm a little biased, but in my opinion, the Mark Twain house and museum is one of the most interesting landmarks in New England. It's such an amazingly well-preserved piece of American history and is also just a really unique house and experience.

The museum is very thorough with its artifacts and details about Sam Clemens and his family's lives. The house itself is a marvel of architecture as well as interior design. It's a wonderful way to see how people lived back in that time and to get a sense of one of the most influential writers and American figures in history.

Additionally, the staff and docents who run the museum and tours are exceptional. They will go above and beyond to make sure you enjoy your time there and can answer practically any question about Clemens, his family, or life in that region and time. Plus, most of them are humorists like Twain and will make it a fun experience for all.

It might not be the best for small kids or dullards, but it's the best such experience in the Northeast. There are quite a few places in this region where you can step backwards in time to see a snapshot of how life used to be, but the Twain house is by far the most enjoyable and interesting way to get a glimpse of an American experience and a truly special slice of our nation's history.

A must see. One of the most beautiful house of it's time. a tour is only twenty dollars per person and no photos or recordings are allowed of the inside of the house; it is a very well worth experience.

Such a bad experience. We worked so hard all week and we're so excited to see this Friday night. Their website malfunctioned and booked us for Saturday instead of Friday. We had to fly out the next morning. It was our one chance to see this and they would do NOTHING to accommodate us. I mean you always have options but they just didn't care.

Further more their website is awful! Disastrous. So difficult to use. Why would I book Saturday night when I had already booked our flights? We had to be in Hartford for work.

I just am so disappointed in the staff. They should have made an exception and helped us out. It's everyone going to use COVID as an excuse till the end of time?

We will never be back I don't believe... It ruined our night

The stories of how his family lived was great! Loved the Billards Room!

When you visit Mark Twain house you should buy a tour with a guide for certain time. An offered time was in 2 hours. I tried to join current tour and was turned down pronouncedly. Unfortunately during my appointed tour our guide (very knowledgeable) was mumbling so it was hard to understand contents. After this tour I made a second try to join another group and was in same manner strictly rejected.
I couldn't tell if it's thoughtless policy or local guides test their local power on travelers.

This was great fun! We did the tour with the chatty housekeeper. She was so funny. I want to go again, but with the butler this time. I bet he has a lot of delicious tea to spill. The housekeeper sure did!!!!!

Drove two hours from NYC & it was worth it. The house and museum are well taken care of by a knowledgeable staff. We took the Living History Tour with 'Susan Clemens,' which was entertaining & informative. I would have preferred a regular tour but that is more a reflection on myself than the quality of the tour; if anything it helped by making it more interesting for the younger children with us (I've been to many such mansions and haven't experienced this before). It is also slightly more child friendly than other such attractions because of the artifacts at the end of the tour that may be handled by visitors (this doesn't make or break the experience but it's more than can be said for many places). Make sure not to miss the exhibits & film; again both entertaining and informative. The management has harnessed Twain's personality in both of these attractions and they are worth seeing whether you want a history lesson or a dose of Twain's famous wit.

Very disappointed, the only way to go through the house is in a tour. If you are limited with the English language than its very difficult to follow, not to mention there was a 2 1/2 hour wait time for a tour my nieces would not have understood. The tickets were overpriced as well, we were very disappointed especially when you think what Mark Twain stood for.

It is a beautiful house loaded with history. Definitely worth visiting. Did not take the guided tour hence could not go inside the house. Only if you take the guided tour you can go inside the house. Nevertheless, enjoyed the museum and the souvenir store.

I have wanted to tour The Mark Twain House for sometime. My college age daughter and I spent the afternoon on the Living History tour with "Lizzy" and were sucked into the late 1800s by her wonderful stories and entertaining explanations.

I think that it depends on the guide, but it seems that foreign tourists are not necessarily supposed, and there are quite early guides, so it is difficult to understand if the English listening ability is not enough You may feel a lot. Although it is a little away from the station, it is not a distance that cannot be walked.

The living history tour was fabulous. Learned so much about Mark Twain and our tour guide, Rev. Joseph Twichell, Twain's best friend that we plan to go again and take a tour with Mark Twain's butler, George!

Mark Twain was a unique individual and his home expresses that unique feeling for adventure and travel. Every detail was thoughtfully attended to. The new museum building is exquisite with plenty of free parking. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and are shared with the Harriet Beecher Stowe house and a third house belonging to Stowers niece who had the vision to preserve the houses and the grounds for future generations. Well worth the trip to see these gorgeous homes and to learn about M. Twain and H.Beecher Stowe. Easy to get to just down the street from the off ramp of I84. It is also said to be haunted by his daughter Susan who died there as a young woman. They give candlelight tours and for an additional $5 you can do the tour which includes the basement. Around Halloween they also do special night tours which sell out quickly so get your tickets early. Very interesting historical place.

The house is a must see if you are in Hartford. I did the tour with Marks daughter Suzie who was terrific. She presented her house as we tip toed around so as not to disturb the great writer. The character was also dressed in costume and was so engaging. I thoroughly enjoyed the tour
