As an LA native, I've been coming here since I was a baby. My family and I always have a good time here, and the Zoo has made many upgrades and improvements over the years, for the animals as well as us humans. There is a wide variety of animals and plenty of shady areas to beat the heat. The new reptile exhibit they have is AMAZING, fun, and interactive for the kids. The chimpanzee exhibit is entertaining and educational, as well as the sea life exhibit in the front. It's affordable too, and they won't give you a hard time if you bring your own water/food.
BUT...every time I've been recently, there is an elephant standing in the enclosure swaying back and forth, alone. This is really disturbing and heartbreaking to witness, as I am sure it is for all animal lovers. Even if one animal group does not seem to have excellent quality of life, it's going to get a low rating from me, despite my largely positive experiences here.
Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, have sunscreen, hat, and a fan to keep you cool in these hot summer days. Plenty of ground to walk about with your kids and lots of photo ops places.
If you like to see animals in small enclosures, this is the right place. It is very nicely laid out, but where palm trees grow on the roadside, it is not difficult either. I found it depressing to see the animals like that.
Despite COVID it was a pretty awesome experience. Took my 2yr baby brother and he loved it .. nothing but laugher, a face full of ice cream and some great sibling boding!
Went on a cold rainy day and although it's super windy at the gate, once you're inside there's no wind. Lots of animals were out, the chimpanzees easily stole the prize for the funnest place. The food choices here is not good, so bring your own food. Took about 5 hours to walk around the whole place. $19 adult ticket with AAA card.
Zoo is nice but doesn t measure up to San Diego zoo. Really wanted to give two and a half stars because they don t have teacher discounts and ticket booth staff service was mediocre. You also have to pay for the carousel ride .
I don't want to take away from the time, effort and resources expended to provide this experience for thousands/millions of visitors BUT I found this zoo to be pretty sad when compared to San Diego Zoo and Bronx Zoo. I visited during the holiday season and was underwhelmed by the lighting experience BUT again, I appreciate the effort.
Arrive early if you want to see everything. There's simulated caves, aviaries, desert lairs, petting zoo, etc. Buy the eco-friendly souvenier cup for $6 and refills are $1 as long as you own the cup (and ice water is complimentary). Theres water misters to keep cool on hot days. Membership is definitely worth it. We get gifts, tours, parties, etc Today we have a members only after hours picnic.
I went for the LA Lights event and it was so much fun. The lights were so pretty and although we couldn't look at all the animals, the ones we did see were super cute and awesome. The churros were really good too
The zoo is nice, if you are LA resident and planning to come here more than 2 times a year then it's worth taking the annual membership. Before you come check the events they are organizing each day from there website and be aware that they start taking out animals at 4 and they close at 5 p.m. It took me around 1.5 -2 hours to quickly tour the whole zoo and watch most of the animals.
It is very well organized and clean. Animals are free in their sections which is clean as well. Zoo keepers are well trained and taking good care of animals and birds. There are food facilities for every test and prices. Few times a year they have special parties for members with plenty of food and drinks.
I saw the lions has a very small room. Both were sad and depressed. The tiger is just very small. In general I believe some animals deserve bigger rooms.
I have been a member of the LA Zoo for over 25 years. i recommend it to my family members with small children. We often get together and take a big crowd to the zoo. You know even when my kids were young till know its the same, get on the tram ride it to the bird aviary watch the show, leave and walk thru the zoo for about 2 hrs and leave, go to the pony rides ad train ride. oh yes we bought souvier cups so always a disccount refill/
The zoo is huge but I expected a lot more animals, birds and other living creatures. Too many exhibits are closed for renovation. It has a big number of places to eat and buy some useless stuff to serve as a gift. I guess I need to visit a zoo in San Diego.
The admission fee is just $20 for a person. Also there's free parking right in front of it.
It's been many years since my last visit went with bother, wife n kids who came up from Mex to vacation best 4 hrs spent. Loved the vegetation and presentation of exhibits as an Angelino two thumbs-up
Great to be back. Sad we had to wear masks because we hardly ever saw other people. Nice shade for the heat, but where to get water? If the drinking fountains are all shut off, how about giving out water bottles?
Got my tix on groupon for a good price $11.85 to be exact i highly recommend the Groupon app. Right now the prices probably gone up. As for the zoo lights there's a lot to see and fun for kids to see all the lights they had various things to look at. Ex: Twinkle tunnel or the Carousel. Also a water lazer light show. We also got to see the reptiles.
I love the zoo... When you go at the right time when all the animals are up and going it's great! Got to take my daughter there for the first time and she enjoyed it very much.
Good sized zoo to tackle for a day. You can definitely complete it in a few hours and is a good size for little toddlers. Probably a little boring for teenagers. Parking is free which is awesome. Lots of exhibits closed during covid (anything indoors) but still enjoyable.
Wonderful place! We went for the LA zoo holiday lights and had a great time. Honestly, much better than Descanso. They even had dreidels!! Such fun lights and most with animal themes to them. Flamingo music notes, monkeys, cats, birds, it was AMAZING to see the lights!
Great place to walk the dogs and take the kids to play in the open enclosures and cages, have a family picnic, or even take a hike/take pictures! Just make sure to go before nightfall, as it's not the safest in the zoo
