Amazing ambience and great crab cakes. The bread basket was very tasty and the baked potato was perfectly cooked. The meal was a bit pricey but you definitely get what you paid for, as the meal was more than enough food.

Honest opinion. I would have to say this place is mediocre at best. It was our first time in Gettysburg and this was the only place we ate at in the area based on reviews we saw but we were left disappointed and hungry. My wife had the roast beef sandwich which was edible but lacked substance, my mother in law ordered the lump crab with a side salad which left much to be desired, my youngest child had the grilled cheese which was good, my oldest child had chicken tenders which were undercooked. Finally I had the spit roasted chicken which was inedible. This was the driest chicken I have ever had the only way I was able to choke this down was by using my wife's au jus that was left over from her food just to add some moisture. Giving credit where it's due the garden salad was good and the bread roll. Food to the side. When we walked to the host table to be sat the boy that was supposed to be sitting guests was a bit to busy talking to the employees and treated us as a nuisance and finaly sat us down after his conversation. In the process of being sat down the busser dropped a few glasses off the tray she was carrying. I know this happens and typically I fully understand and dont ever give any second thoughts when it happens. However, my mother in law is on blood thinners and the glass pieces shattered up and enbedded some shards into her sock. Luckly she was wearing pants and shoes and not anything exposing her skin or we could have ended the day in the hospital. Mind you no one said sorry or anything when this happened and saw me picking glass out of her sock and shoe. The waitress was nice, not very tentative but in her defence she was busy. As mentioned we left hungry as the food just wasnt adiquit and we planned on ordering more food but just didnt want to spend any more money there and be more disappointed. Now this place was packing in nicely so maybe this was just a one off fluke but I know we wont be back.
Had a great time at the Dobbin House. Food was slightly above average except for the French onion soup. Atmosphere was over the top and it waitress was phenomenal. I highly recommend a stop here while you are in town and you have to try the soup.
Good food, great service, friendly people. Nice ambiance, period dress. Our table was not wonderful. Small table (felt like the children's table) and the sun blotted out my lovely wife's face. We should have asked for a different table. Not inexpensive, but certainly not cheap
Touristy but with good food. While this is an early American stone building predating the civil war which is why people come to Gettysburg, it is a classic early Penna German building. Quaint and old, lots of steps, not really a place for a Walker or wheelchair, especially on a busy night.
Food and libations were quite tasty, well presented, fresh and with great service.
Great food and ambience. You're probably in Gettysburg because you love history and that is all the reason you need to visit Dobbin House. You'll get the same colonial feel and fantastic meal in either the dining room or the tavern, you can't go wrong with either. I'd opt for the tavern when your kids are with you and the dining room for you and yours, alone. They do take reservations so try calling when it's a weekend.
I love the historic atmosphere of the tavern. It feels like you are stepping back into the civil war times. I feel like I should be seeing a civil war soldier stroll in for a pint. The servers are very friendly and the food is excellent!
We always eat in the tavern/bar area. It always feels like it's crowded, and you have to wait for a table. I know it's supposed to take place during the civil war, but the chairs are quite uncomfortable. The tables are wobbly, and it is freaky when there's a candle on a wobbly table.
We went for casual dining at the Springhouse Tavern in the basement. Very cozy atmosphere and the food was delicious. Cheeseburger and blue cheese and bacon burger were the best ever! The Gettysburg Mule was great too!
Dobbin House Gettysburg is awesome and I would highly recommend this for anyone visiting the area. The atmosphere is everything you would expect from an old historic town. Absolutely loved this place.
The food was terrible. They didn't get me the right soup I ordered and if they did it was terrible. The steak was very dry. Definitely not worth the money. I highly recommend not eating there. Oh and the sandwhich had way to much meat and the mushrooms were terrible.
The basement dining area is full of civil war character, with it's stone walls and olde timbers. The food is well prepared and delivered swiftly by very friendly wait staff. Always crowded and very popular. Cute gift shop to peruse whilst waiting for a table.
It was so good! The house was really cool to see and the food was amazing. The prime rib was the best one I've ever had. Make reservations! People were waiting for almost 2 hours, we made reservations and got seated right away.
We had a wonderful dinner! Everything was prepared perfectly! Our dinners were delicious! Our server, Pat was a pleasure! We loved the old time Christmas atmosphere! We had a great time!
Had the greatest time in a long time. Food was excellent drinks were great and service was by far the best! Try to get a table in the basement. Ask about the ghost.
One of the worst restaurant experiences.A party of 8. Service was awful! We were there almost 3 hours. Not of our choice. Two people ordered soup that they never got, after 2 requests. One guest waited more than an hour for an ice tea.Grandchildren found pitchers of water and served the table.Meals not must better. My chicken and shrimp was floating in grease. My friend's pasta was the same.Brussel Sprouts for two parties was not fit to eat and was returned.Nothing but applesauce was offered except applesauce which they never got.Waited so long to pay our bill we finally flagged down another waitress. What a shame! Such a beautiful historic building. The gift shop looked inviting but after 3 hours at the table we didn't even want to go in.
Good historical aspects. The food is also unfortunately of the colonial era. If you order the pork chop, you get a whole leg(practically). Some things were good and accurate vibe, but overall not impressed.
I've been to both the Alexander Dobbin Dining Rooms and the Springhouse Tavern, and I enjoyed both very much. The colonial atmosphere of the Alexander Dobbin Dining Rooms makes for a great dining experience, and the food, while a little pricey, was delicious. We absolutely loved the mussels. The Springhouse Tavern also has a great atmosphere and with more casual food at more affordable prices is also great. If you go, make sure to get the French Onion soup. It's dynamite.
I have lived in the Gettysburg area for over 30 years, and had frequented the tavern with family and friends. It was always a pleasant time. The atmosphere was nice, the food was great. Yesterday my husband and I went into the tavern to celebrate a special day. We decided on the tavern because of the memories. We we're seated, and immediately assaulted with vulgar language from the table next to us. We don't mind people laughing and enjoying themselves, it was the F word repeatedly along with other foul language. We looked at each other and got up to leave. We told them why, and they didn't care. I guess times have changed and the tavern is now classified as a dive bar, because in a nice bar you would be asked to tone it down a bit. Olive Garden in Chambersburg PA proved to be a much better experience, and we we're surrounded by large groups, and the place was packed.
Even the shop upstairs was uninviting at the Dobbins House. I really do not want to hear employees complaining. It is extremely off-putting.
We will never return. It has declined in so many ways.
We did the B&B for a little mid week getaway, the staff is very friendly and helpful. If you go, you have to rent a GettyPed to tool around. It's fantastic. Would recommend Dobbin House to all.
As you walk in the restaurant, it would feel like you step back in time! The hostess was nice and showed us to our tables. The waitress, Sarah, was very excellent. She was dressed in the cloths of a colonial women and explained our meal very well. We had order the Named Prime Rib. It came with a salad that had the dressing on the side. The dressing came in the coolest creamer looking thing. The prime rib was cooked to perfection. The service was awesome, and the atomsphere was inviting for a inter racial couple. The only problem was that I didn't get to finish my prime rib and had to take a doggie bag. It was too big!
The history of this building was incredible to learn about. And the FOOD is absolutely delicious. I enjoyed the French Onion soup and the Scallops. Both were delectable. The staff is extremely good at their job, and they are all extremely friendly. They even had a man playing live music table to table. I went with a group of friends, but this place can also be extremely romantic. I couldn't recommend it enough! It is a must if you are in Gettysburg!
This is one of my very favorite restaurants! I love the atmosphere down stairs in the tavern I wish it was set upstairs like the house used to be. I think it's silly they used the canopy beds as tables. They should have made them beds or tables not both.
A first-class resturant. However, we had reserved and also received a confirmation email and when we arrived, the resturant was closed despite reservation! Company party! The manager apologized, but that did not help us ...
Wonderful experience. The historical building and the wait staff dressed in period attire added much to our dining experience. The food was absolutely delicious and the service impeccable.
Excellent service and a one of a kind experience. It was such a unique historic atmosphere which I loved. The food was ok eating here was the highlight of the trip to Gettysburg.
I was really excited about getting to dine there and experience the history of Gettysburg. I was a little disappointed in the menu, but the food was still good and came out quickly.
I do not recommend eating there if you are claustrophobic as the tavern is pretty small with short ceilings.
A must if in Gettysburg for any amount of time. Only enjoyed the restaurant but it was amazing. Old feel, very polite staff, and prices (though high for the area) are reasonable. Food is very good with an awesome bread basket to hold you over until your food arrives.
This must have been an off day .. I have been going here for years..They have the best French onion soup anywhere. Was the first time my husband was coming with me we both ordered the special which was either chicken Alfredo or shrimp Alfredo it was lacking in sauce , when we asked the waitress if we could have more she never questioned or apologized she came back five minutes later with very little for my husband to share on both of ours . I ordered a piece of cheesecake and some ginger bread with cream cheese to go later on in the evening we opened up the container only to find it dried out piece of cheesecake and burnt gingerbread.. I tried calling in immediately the phone rang and rang and rang and nobody answered no voicemail to be left... We spent 60.00 and it was very disappointing . They usually have better food . The place was packed and you could not hear each other .. My Husband is not interested in going back. I ll call in today and see what they say.. I was disappointed this never happened before. I ll give them another chance...
Best Restaurant in Gettysburg! Despite the pandemic, this place is to your utmost expectation with safety, cleanliness, and of course their superb customer service.
Gettysburg tradition. Eat in the tavern and check out the underground railroad hiding spot. Such history in this beautiful restaurant. Good food, and the tavern atmosphere is one of my favorites.
Love the pub downstairs. Nice casual food in a historical setting. During the warmer months the patio dining out front has the same food options and no drop in service.
anyone who has left a review of this place woth any positive remarks is clearly on vacation and simply mistaking the Dobbin houses smoke and mirrors for a good place to eat. this place serves GAS STATION WINE... you can go right down the road and buy 2 bottles of the same wine for the price of one glass at Dobbin. the food is way overpriced for frozen microwaved side dishes and dollar store meat. service is shotty at best. inexperienced bartenders who actually put bare fingers in my drink...im sorry but thats disgusting. the bartender was frantic and stressed out taking more than 40 minutes to serve only ten people all while cursing and complaining about her job...and a manager who couldn't care less about her job or your time. what joke establishment. if you want to have a good time go somewhere else. I have eaten at almost every spot in town and this is hands down the worst place to go. save your money and get a better meal drinks and service at literally any other place
The Dobbin House is all about the ambiance. A converted root cellar of a 200 yr. old building, original stone walls, rich dark wood molding with candle light and a fire place in season. Very limited menu of very mediocre food. Even their signature "Kings" onion soup, though still good, is not what it once was. All this and the prices creep up. But it is still crowded. Expect a 15 min. wait at popular times. Will I be one of those waiting? Most assuredly, my wife will insist!
Excellent food choices. Excellent Service. All food tasty and hot. Atmosphere is very cozy for small or larger groups. A must stop when you visit Gettysburg.
