THE CLIFF BAY – Porto Bay Hotels, Madeira Review

There can not be anything better on Madeira! A dream hotel of the top class. Wonderful garden area, pool area for relaxing, equipment wonderful and the service in the whole hotel great. Here you can and would like to come back again and again.

It is a top hotel with a great location. The rooms with a view of Funchal are awesome. There is nothing to complain about.

We spent a week in this hotel. We chose it because of the location just outside the old town of Funchal and because of the great view of the harbor and city. Upon arrival, we were surprised with a free upgrade to a room with Funchalblick - thanks to the hotel. Our room was huge and we had an excellent view of the harbor and city. Especially for fireworks (every Saturday in June) priceless. The service can hardly be compromised, everything was wonderful and very good. The breakfast is excellent and we enjoyed it in the small garden with sea views. There is a Happy Our Time twice a day with live music and half beverage prices, the beer then for two euros - for a (*****) hotel more than adequate. The three pools we have hardly used (hiking vacation), but these are very nicely laid out (sea water pool on the Atlantic level and fresh water pool above) and the supply of drinks and small dishes works great. In June there were mostly older English in the hotel, hardly any children. Every evening there is live music in the bar, but this is true for almost all of Funchal, so it is not a unique selling point.
Finally, the only negative point: our return flight took place only in the evening and usually hotel rooms 12 o'clock to clear. An extension of 3 hours was offered to us, but over 200 (!) Euro - it should work the management. We know numerous hotels worldwide where this small service is free of charge.

Not the newest hotel. Could need some refurbishment, but sea views are marvelous and service is excellent.

This accommodation ***** is a 10-minute walk from the beach. Located on a natural peninsula, The Cliff Bay - PortoBay offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and private access to the sea. It features indoor and outdoor swimming pools, a restaurant with 2 Michelin stars and free Wi-Fi.

All rooms have 2 queen beds, a private marble bathroom and an LCD TV with cable channels and a DVD and CD player. In addition, all rooms have a veranda with table and chairs and a view of the hotel garden or the Bay of Funchal.



You can use first-class spa and wellness facilities here. You also have direct private access to the sea, tennis courts, a games room and a library.

The Cliff Bay - PortoBay is a 5-minute drive from the center of Funchal and just a 20-minute drive from Madeira Airport. An airport shuttle service is available upon request.

Beautiful hotel in a perfect location with sea access and lots of space to explore. The staff were all really helpful and kind throughout our week long stay and the food was always of the highest quality. We hope to be back again soon and enjoy the hotel to its full potential, the Michelin star restaurant want open and the hot tubs around the hotel weren't open due to covid.

Friendly, efficient check in with champagne. Older audience. Unquestionably received an upgrade with Bay View. Large room with comfortable bed and large smoking balcony. Dinner from the room service tasted excellent and was for us at high prices accustomed Swiss enormously cheap. Mini-Bar: Daily filled with complimentary fruit juices. Breakfast: according to the high hotel standard, coffee however a watery porridge. Hotel arranges island tours. Private full-day tour EUR 140, -. Attention: With the taxis you have to negotiate the price in advance. Again, more efficient check-out. The hotel is absolutely quiet and met our high expectations. Gladly again.

Spent our 40th wedding anniversary here could not fault hotel , but buffet food left a lot to be desired especially the hot section when we sent an uncooked meat dish back we were a free coffee as a replacement l think for the amount of money we paid a cup of coffee was a wee bit of an insult, certainly will not return.

Excellent staff and hotel. Depending on what you want to watch from your room, if you opt for a balcony, some overlook town and harbour which is interesting, however, overlooking the sea, and the gardens of the hotel is restful

Nice hotel, pleasant staff, but dissappointed with the quality of the breakfast, coffee weak, fruit choices dissappointing and the fruit juices taste watered down . Can't fault the rooms and the beds are really comfortable and clean.

Lovely hotel with good comfort and fine facilities in quiet surroundings with a fantastic view of the sea and towards Funchal not far from local city life. Friendly staff. The our dogs.

One of the best hotels we have stayed in. The internal decoration in the public areas and rooms has been done to the highest standard. The staff are very efficient and friendly (some of them have been there for many years). The hotel is built on the side of a cliff with a pool at sea level with access to the sea for those brave enough to take the plunge. The spa, gym, hair dresser and indoor/outdoor pool are maintained to a very high standard and are immaculate. The Blue Lagoon restaurant serves a different fresh fish for lunch each day and the Rose Garden serves a huge themed buffet each night. Truly a luxurious stay.

We had an unbelievable experience from the very beginning at the cliff bay hotel. We received a free sea view room upgrade which was fantastic. The staff where amazingly helpful and the layout of the hotel is so unique with lots of nooks and crannies to explore

A beautiful hotel, a recommended stay with brilliant service. The hotel is not ideal for a family break though. The hotel is more suited to couples. If you want relaxation, this is the place to go!

Absolutely recommended. I can not understand the negative voices. Breakfast is the madness as well as the pool restaurant. Super friendly and courteous staff. Have met some trainies (interns) from Austria and Germany. These raved about the friendly colleagues and bosses. Maximum points and really top.

A really excellent hotel. Superb location, fantastic friendly service and wonderful food. Great room. I particularly loved the sea swimming areas. I can't recommend it enough.

Our first stay at this hotel and so far haven't been disappointed. The staff are very professional and focused - you can see the attention to detail is very important - from reception to restaurants to bar staff to room cleaners they are all drilled to work to a high standard. Our room is very spacious and well equipped plus we have a veranda. There is entertainment every night with dancing if you want to get up and do your stuff. The hotel itself has several restaurants and two pools on different levels all the way down to sea level - is very clean, light and airy with a modern feel plus there are great views of Funchal if you choose the right spot. There is also a free coach service into Funchal that runs on a regular basis during the day that is available if you want to get into the town centre. We hired a car through the hotel and they got us an excellent deal with the car delivered to our door. One night we ordered room service and they brought our meals on a table right to our room - really excellent service. We don't really have any complaints other than our room was described by the agent as having a 'garden view' which it doesn't really - as it's at the front of the hotel and therefore has one of the worst views and is more noisy, however the hotel describes the room as being one with a 'land view', which is more accurate - so be careful when booking as we would have preferred a better view but I guess that was why we got such a good deal

A really nice hotel with stunning views from the hotel across to Funchal.
Staff really friendly also and breakfast was nice but not the best we ve had and we didn t have evening meals so can t comment on that .
Only problem we really had was that we had ants in bed every day and even when we woke up they were crawling around us .
To be fair we didn t complain and just squashed them and carried on haha .
But I guess a lot of people would freak out but we just got on with it .
Anyway we would still go again as it is a beautiful hotel with lots of restaurants just outside the hotel and we found lots of nice places to eat .

Hotel in wonderful surroundings and staff of exceptional treatment. Options for large and small and many and different options to give yourself more of a dip.

Very nice hotel. Worth the money. The main thing to book a good room. They lived in a suite "Antlantik" on the 8th floor. The room is great. From the huge balcony (about 15 meters in length) a gorgeous view of the ocean and on two sides of Funchal. You can enjoy the sun on the loungers on the balcony. Its restaurant Gallo is marked by two Michelin stars. Be sure to book in advance, since everything is taken for 5-7 days. Dinner for two 500 euros, but we took the maximum menu. If you live in a good room, then breakfast is in your restaurant. All others eat in another. The hotel has its own beach. Thanks to all the hotel staff.

Excellent hotel, where service ftom all members of staff is five star. Lovely airy big bedrooms, very good delicious evening themed buffets in Rose Garden restaurant, house wine particularly good and very good promotion available to buy vouchers to obtain a discount over period of stay. Beautiful, well kept gardens and plenty of sunbeds in spa and around pool both upstairs and at sea level. Lots of quiet areas, hotel was almost full but never felt crowded.
