Great place to stay only problem which lets it down is you cannot book a specific room which I would expect a five star hotel to do especially if you give them five options
Been going for over ten years but not next year as no availability on room choice

Paid extremely high price for a king suite. Instead we got two doubles put together. AC didn't work at night when needed most. Charged 5 euros for coffee at dinner with the price we paid for the room it's insane that coffee is that price.

I am amazed at the education, luxury and beauty of the hotel!
I am on honeymoon and upon arriving in the room we were expecting a bottle of sparkling wine and some fine confectionery.
In addition to the greatest treat, we have gained the privilege of staying in an oceanfront room with a splendid balcony!
Bravo !!!

A very nice hotel for slightly higher demands. Most of the rooms have sea views and are nicely furnished. The bathrooms are friendly and have a bathtub and shower.
The spa offer is very good and offers something for every taste. From sauna, Damofbad, to a wide range of different massages, to swimming and sports, there really is something for everyone!
Cliff Bay has two restaurants, one of which has two Michelin stars. But be careful, there is a dress code in the 2 star restaurant. The lady wears a long evening dress and the gentleman a suit with a bow tie.
The second restaurant, without a Michelin star, offers both a la carte and buffet. The menu, which changes daily, is always dedicated to one topic and is richly and lovingly served. The staff is always very friendly and attentive without being intrusive.
A dress code also applies in this restaurant, but casual evening wear can be worn here. Flip-flops, add-on toilets and the like are not allowed at any time.
There is also a very nice bar in a dignified ambience at Cliff Bay. With daily live music in the early evening, you can end the day very well there. The food offer is plentiful and very, very tasty! The cocktails are also highly recommended.

Conclusion: Anyone who has been there once is guaranteed to come back. Relaxation right from the start.
The Cliff Bay comes highly recommended!

I would say it is a good 4 stars. Hard product is even compatible with the category you want, but soft product is more than you expect from a 3 star. Overall, its rooms and facilities are suitable for the predominant age group, up to 60 years old, but the lack of renovation and upgrading of the hotel makes it seem like it stopped in the 1990s. the sea, but it was lateral. Good size room, quiet, internal layout could be more contemporary and functional. Visibly used and worn furniture. We do not use the DVD player (!). The double bed are two single. Good cleanliness in visible but less obvious parts, dust and traces of previous lodgings. Terrace without privacy due to the L-shape of the hotel. Service and offer, as well as quality, at breakfast and below expectations for a 5 * luxury. Good water area, but staff is lacking. Small gym, without instructor and with geriatric schedule. They charge for everything at the hotel at abusive prices that transcend that charged at luxury resorts in the Abu Dahbi desert. Complimentary water, 1 L only on the first day. Front desk friendliness and attention, with few exceptions, is hurried, protocolal, and detached, less guest-focused, and more focused on advertising additional services and partners. At check-in we are filled with business brochures, no maps or helpful tips, and almost nothing about how to make use of the hotel facilities. One notices throughout the stay an obsession in the hotel to emphasize what is not allowed or cannot be met at the expense of the opposite. The letter of "thank you" on the eve of checkout crowns the detached and almost impolite relationship that veiled the entire room: it is a disguised warning that if the room is not vacated and cleared by noon a fee will be charged. The hotel solves well and pleases as long as a welcoming and carefree experience is not to be expected.

This hotel really deserves all its stars. We had a suite with sea view on Funchal. The room and the whole hotel is very quiet. Everything is very clean. The breakfast is amazing. ... You are sitting in a tropical garden and looking at the sea. Perfect. ...

We went in April 2016 as part of the annual flower festival. Our suite was great and the breakfasts in the Michelin starred Il Gallo D'Oro were amazing and set us up nicely for the day ahead. The Spa team were lovely and really looked after us. Madeira as a destination was fantastic and the flower festival was an experience not to forget. We hope to be back one day.

A really nice hotel. However communal areas does feel a little dated. Staff are friendly and breakfast is good. I note it still is one of the nicest hotels in Funchal. Location is about 40 minute walk from the heart of the old town. But can get to main town centre in about 15 minute walk.

Wonderful stay!

Wonderful stay!
Very nice hotel with beautiful, well-kept gardens. Spacious and very clean room.
The dinner and breakfast buffets were varied but a bit repetitive. Overall, quality products.
The staff were friendly and always attentive to the customer. Really, a big thank you to all the staff for their kindness and professionalism.
Only negative point: the air conditioning, a little noisy.
My husband and I had spent 10 wonderful days.
To renew and especially to recommend.

Very well located 5 star hotel. With a 2 star restaurant. Great importance is attached to cleanliness in all areas. The staff is extremely friendly. There is a car rental service and a shuttle service with its own bus into the city. All excursions can easily be booked at the hotel.
The hotel is located on a rock peak and therefore the outside area, which extends over several levels, is not visible. Own access to the ocean.

Due to the location there is a wonderful view of Funchal, especially in the evening. And of course the harbor can also be seen from the outdoor jacuzzi.

I love it here, that is why Clare and me come back each year. This is a 5* Hotel and lives up to that standard. All the staff are so accommodating, friendly and helpful. We haven't eaten in Michelin star restaurant yet, maybe next year, but all the food we have eaten here was excellent! Not a place if you want a beach, you drop directly into the Ocean.

We are currently staying here, want to give 3.5 to. 4 stars. First impressions on arrival Wow,
We was upgraded on arrival but didn't think it is a superior bedroom, pleasant receptionist, our luggage was removed immediately by a porter, housekeeper shown us to our room (unnecessary to me), grey hair found on bathroom floor near toilet and the soap dish above bidet on inspection was dirty. Mirrors and patio doors also streaky. Our shower appears to leak onto floor when used.
Food - exceptional, buffet breakfast, same at evening meal could do with being hotter with various menus each evening. wine and beer pricey however happy hour 5.30 to 6.30. Pool lovely and quiet with pool staff always available to help.
All in all if you are looking for a relaxing quiet holiday this is the one however we feel its more the older generation that's here.
We booked a Spa (not had yet) member of staff very helpful shown us round even though we had been here 5 days, told us gym available to use, sauna, steam room etc if we hadn't have booked a Spa we wouldn't have known this was included. These comments shouldn't put you off it is a very nice hotel.

A hotel that knows how to receive its guests with a lot of friendliness and small gestures that make the difference. As we arrived at 9:30 and the room would only be ready at 11:30, they offered us a magnificent a la carte breakfast. And when we entered the room we knew we had been upgraded from sea view to harbor view. And the gestures of welcome were happening, turning our vacations into a fantastic stay.

Been coming here to this hotel many times and, although starting to look a bit tired, you can't beat thus place for fabulous, friendly service, comfortable, spacious rooms and spectacular views of Funchal.Ask for a room on the fifth floor for the best views(supplement apples for sea/Funchal views)..higher floors attract extra cost.Funchal is a twenty min.stroll away or around 7 in a cab.A great space in Madeira.
