This place was amazing. Loved the ambiance and how open the restaurant was made byc eliminating the booths. We were there for Easter brunch and the staff was incredible, as was the food! Everything was cooked to perfection, crispy trout skin, perfectly pickled vegetables, fluffed butter rice, and doughnut holes. The drinks were very well proportioned and not heavy handed. All in all, it was one of the best experiences we've had in quite some time!

Absolutely fantastic! One of the best meals we had in the area. The patio dining is lovely, very comfortable in the shade and lots of gorgeous trees. We had the fried avocado, tomato tartine (to die for!), short ribs (YUM), miso Caesar (house made miso, no big deal...) and roasted eggplant (amaze balls)! Definitely recommend, you can t go wrong!

My husband and I came here on Sunday, February 18th and made reservations at 7:30pm. We arrived a couple minutes late, but the hostess said our table wasn t ready. We sat in the lounge chairs for 30 minutes and they didn t offer us anything. Not water, a drink, or appetizer - nothing - as we waited until 8pm to be seated. They said we could be seated at the long communal table, or wait longer to be seated at a private table. We were hungry and didn t want to wait for another half hour longer to get our own table. So we sat at the end of the long communal table thankfully not right next to another couple or party. It was cool to view the kitchen and the open barbecue, and see how dishes were expedited. We ordered pretty quickly and our waitress was kind.

Only a couple minutes after we got the wings, and were clearly still eating the wings and not ready for the next course, they brought all of the other dishes - all at once. They didn t space out the dishes properly. we were not enjoying our dinner and trying to just stuff our faces so that our main entrees wouldn t get cold. We felt super rushed to eat since they brought all the food out all at once.

I think we realized also that this place is better for groups of four. Since it s more of a family style place, you could try more things and not be rushed to finish it all.

After we had finished the food, my husband and I were asking each other if we wanted dessert. We both said we didn t need dessert since we felt overly full trying to finish the food before it got cold. However, even though we didn t plan to get dessert - we weren t even offered the dessert menu to see what was on the menu. The waitress just gave us our check. What if we wanted dessert?

Yes, check please. We were disappointed with the service and not sure if we ll come back. They already include a 20% gratuity charge on the check no matter what. We definitely wouldn t have given them 20%.

Starter:
The Charter Oak Bread and cultured butter was really good. Yummy crunchy crust and good sourdough goodness.

Small:
- Wings: $18. The wings were amazing. Our favorite thing we ate that night. They were piping hot and finger licking delicious.

Salad:
- Little Gem Salad: $22. This was good too, wish it had more acid or a squeeze of lemon to it to balance out the albacore and herbed cream. This was also no little gem salad. It was pretty big.

Main:
- Beef Short Rib with Beets. $28. This was good, super meaty and very hearty. Had that smokiness to it and was nicely roasted over the fire.

- Trout. $24. This was good, cooked well and greens were tasty too.

Dessert:
- None. We weren t even offered the dessert menu.

Lived in St Helena 30 years, worked in food and wine biz. This restaurant is an example of the pretense that has taken over my town. Total LA joke of preciousness. $26 for a glass of grocery store chardonnay for my friend. Locals aren't going to support that program, hope it hurts when you go down.

Great food, great vibe, great service! No matter what you are celebrating or just a get together with friends, you can t go wrong with this one. I am not a salad person but I gotta say their fresh veggie from garden was impressive! Let alone the buttermilk chicken and beef ribs. Plus, the price was surprisingly reasonable given the fact that a lot of restaurants in the wine county are overpriced.
Anyways, I will give it my full recommendation!

Incredibly ambience. There is an industrial and low lights which makes it perfect for a date, a business meeting or just to hangout with friends at the bar and enjoy happy hours. There is even a private room for large groups celebration. Food is delightful and the drinks are neatly made. It is definitely a place on my list to come back.

There are a lot of good reviews on here for this place but frankly I don't get it. The building is beautiful and the overall vibe/scene/ambiance is respectable, however I would say the food and service is mediocre at best. The wings were OK for an app, the short rib I ordered for entree was fatty and not memorable, and the waiter was nice but didn't come around much - must be because the gratuity is already included in the bill regardless of how good the service is. Simply put, there are just too many other good options in the Napa area to choose here for dinner.

This place is surely one of the most attractive restaurants in the area. Every time I go there I am exceedingly happy. They always keep their very high level service and the highest level of meals they offer. You always win with this place. Very recommended.

Excellent lunch here. We made a reservation but could have walked in. Surprisingly not crowded even though it s a weekday. The food and service were outstanding. Our server had a thorough knowledge of the menu including the cocktails and was very accommodating to any dietary issues. Between the 5 of us we had a number of dishes including the burger, fried chicken sandwich, wings, grilled avocado salad, broccoli salad and others. We loved everything. The bread and butter are not to be missed. I will be sure to return next time I m in the area.

Outstanding food and service in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The staff are friendly and extremely knowledgeable without being too pushy.
The menu ranges from innovative small plates (6$) to large, meaty sharing dishes (26$) so there really is something for everyone here.
The wine list is extensive and extremely well researched.
Absolutely recommended.

Great service and knowledgeable staff. Memorable experience with even the most simplest appetizer, which was a homegrown organic fresh vegetable assortment.
Very fresh and flavorful with dipping sauce. Not to mention a very tender beef rib for a main dish.
I will definitely add this to my return places when visiting wine country.

My new favorite place to eat in St Helena. Try all of their first plates truly amazing. All of their veggie dishes have some of the freshest ingredients in it I've ever had . Spectacular wine list but they also waived the corkage fee if you bring your own which is a pretty rare thing for a restaurant in California

Excellent dinner-- we shared a lot of small bites and like almost all of them, from the spice-rubbed charred avocado to the small garden vegetables with a fermented soy dip to the grilled cucumbers to the soy butter pork in acorn miso. The bowl of "three rum punch" with shaved ice and fresh herbs for 6 to share was also a great idea.

And the noise level was just bustling enough to be festive but without being too loud or echoing to hold a normal conversation.

Tl;dr - great food, great atmosphere, great drinks. Good special occasion kind of place.

A minimal menu greets us from an old book. Good first impression. Got the beef spareribs with lima beans ($25) and the chicken wings ($18) for lunch. The wings were delicious- sweet, crunchy, smokey, juicy. Nice flavor. Apparently this particular flavor will be gone tomorrow. The beef spareribs were super tender and bursting with delicious savory flavors. The lima beans were good. We were celebrating a birthday and ordered their flour-less chocolate walnut date cake ($8) and coffee ($5). They brought out a candle for us~ The cake was really delicious but it was quite small. Honestly the coffee was not special - I expected that because everything here really stood out as carefully planned and well executed that the coffee would also be great.

The music is super chill. The vibe here follows suit. A pleasant place to relax and enjoy some good food and drink. Even the menus come in old books, how cool! We will definitely be back. The booze selection looked awesome, next time I will indulge.

The decoration and space is amazing, but you didn't come here because of that, but because of the food.
We start with this Brie and chips, and it was amazing. The chips maybe a little bit salty, but the brie was amazing!
Then we ask for a steak and a chicken sandwich. The sandwich looks simple, but the equilibrium on it was perfect. The same with the meat, was very smoky, but I felt it lack something.
In my opinion it deserves an 4.25, but since I can't give it that, it has to be 4.

They charge a 20% service charge in lieu of a gratuity? I have seen this attempted by parties larger than 6 or 8, but not for 2. I have never been forced to pay 20% over my food costs- gratuity in CA is OPTIONAL. NEEDLESS TO SAY WHEN THE MANAGER REFUSED TO WAIVE THIS CHARGE WE REFUSED TO EAT THERE. THEY EVEN CHARGED US $1 fee for the $5 bread....over tax as well. Huh? I don t think so. Not coming back and I hope you all stop overpaying for business costs that the owners should be paying themselves. It s called cost of doing business (paying employees), not cost that your patrons ought to pay so you can live in the Caymans- prices were already astronomical.

I am shocked and appalled this is associated with Chris Kostow. Pros: Gorgeous design and space. That's it. But also like an enormous patio they weren't using? Unsure if bad management or no permits?

Cons: Omg the service was apocalyptic. Dining room wasn't even that busy for a saturday lunch. Server had too many tables, but there were like 4 bartenders standing around, a busser doing nothing, two hosts and a manager doing nothing. No one helping so it took about 30 minutes to literally a screw top bottle of wine open.

Order was beyond messed up. 3/8 dishes didn't arrive, everything was messed up.

Food beyond tragic and mediocre. .

At least they use riedel glasses.

We had a wonderful experience at The Charter Oak. When I asked a friend (one who definitely knows these things) for dinner recommendations in St. Helena, and he came back with one name and one name only, we knew it would be good, and it did not disappoint!

They also came recommended by the staff at Meadowood, and for good reason. Fantastic ambiance, incredible food, awesome cocktails and great service; you should definitely pay them a visit - you'll be super glad you did.

Delicious food with some inventive combinations. Definitely recommend. I would have given it 5 stars if the lighting was dimmer, it needed more ambiance but I loved my food which is what matters most!

This place is simply excellent!

This place is simply excellent!
We got bread and cultures butter(I can eat butter just by itself. It s so good and the bread is toasted to perfection.
The garden veggies and so fermented dip is also very fresh and delicious way to enjoy veggies. I normally don t like carrots but I enjoyed eating it. All the veggies are picked at the garden at the restaurant so it s very fresh. We got tostones and this was very flavorful. It s very crispy outside and soft inside.
Also got little gem lettuce, smoked and dried albacore. This was very light/explosion of smoky/sour flavor. So good!
Drum wheat strozzapreti was only okay. The noodles were cooked to perfection but it tastes like something was missing.
From the hearth we got ribeye steak. It was too salty.
But the heirloom tomatoes and grilled corn were very tasty.
Overall I would come back again to try other dishes. In fact I came back for brunch the next day and tried the tahini/honey toast and it was very good.
Also had smoked trout on the brunch menu.

Comfortable and quiet. We found the burger to be quite good. Beet salad was also a good portion size with fresh produce. Try the small side of bread with butter as well. Staff was friendly and attentive. Silverware is hidden in the table. Cool. Will dine again when we next visit Napa.

Wonderful restaurant in Saint Helena. Quite cosy, crowd of all ages, exquisite wine choices, and the food is very good overall. There was only one appetizer that disappointed us, however, the beef ribs were to die for. Highly recommended. Outside there is also a cool fireplace which we sat next to for a while and it was beautiful.

We had an amazing dining experience here! Would highly recommend the family dinner where you sit back, relax and let the chef select various dishes for you to try. Our server Dan was incredibly knowledgeable about each item and led us on a very fun culinary journey. No doubt the hearth does magical things to food. The steak was perfectly cooked and so flavorful. The charred peppers and corn took grilled vegetables to another level. But it s difficult to even pick a favorite dish every single item was so thoughtfully prepared and presented. We tried many different restaurants during our visit to Napa, and this one is definitely at the top of our list!

Walked in to an empty restaurant and was told that they didn t have room for our party and we would have to sit at the bar. Sat at the bar and didn t get served for over 20 minutes so ended up leaving. Heard that the food was good but the service was very poor and the staff was somewhat rude.

I can't believe I was fortunate enough to eat here, considering the difficulty in trying to get a reservation. Excellent food, service, and atmosphere. In fact, my family and I were relatively full before we came in, yet finished off every single dish because it was that good. Moreover, the choices on the dessert cart (yes, a cart) will leave you speechless. Definitely recommend this place, and would love to come back!

Happy to see the stuffy and formal hospitality scene in Napa Valley has been broken. Wore my jeans and felt comfortable. Creative and delicious food. Exceptional service. Fun surprises. And extremely accommodating to special requests. So happy we ventured out to this experience. PS - shoutout to the cocktail menu!

We thought we were going to Tra vigna but found Charter Oak, what's a wonderful find. We had a great lunch, rockfish for me and chicken salad for my wife. Both were great. Then they brought the desert cart with the pastry chef explaining each selection. The chocolate tart was great. The servers understand what service with a smile means. And we were able to dine with our dog on the patio.

The meal was very enjoyable with high quality ingredients winning the day. The raw vegetable salad included giant carrots and an incredibly flavorful vinaigrette. The bread was the highlight of the meal, which also left us with less appetite for what came after. The crispy tostones continued to a spoil our appetite for the rest of the meal. In hindsight, we would have stuck to just the salad and the bread.

We ordered the pasta for one the mains with mushrooms on the side, which tasted good, but at this point, we were already quite full. I wish we had ordered less because leaving the place, we left feeling a bit bloated.

My three favorite items in order were the bread, the vinaigrette from the salad, and the mushrooms.
