If l could give 10 stars l would, what a great hotel!
Hotel was beautiful. The staff, very nice and helpful. But what I REALLY enjoyed about this place was the location and being able to walk the River Walk and walk to The Alamo.
An older historical Hotel converted modern amenities. It is located downtown close to a lot of things to do
I booked a room through Orbitz and apparently my reservation could not be found in their computer. Front desk staff gave me a nasty attitude, blaming me for not booking directly from Sheraton.
this is literally the most vile hotel i ve ever stayed at. the bathroom had black mold, the toilet was facing diagonally, there were toe nail clippings all over the room and old popcorn. when we called the front desk to inform then of the gross room the told us that they were being less diligent about cleaning during COVID, and they just come in and wipe the counters and change the sheets.

Great very overpriced. AC very loud when it kicks in. Couldn't sleep. Moist people at swimming pool which was on the next floor outside my window.
THE BREAKFAST IS GREAT I GAVE 5 star. With roughly 50 dollars additional we got club room access, parking over night and breakfast for 5 adults which is really great.
Very nice lobby and mezzanine. Location is great, walking distance to everything. Rooms are small and need updating. Bathroom was tiny.
The history of this hotel is amazing. I rate the hotel 3 stars due to the following. After a long drive into San Antonio our rooms were not ready. We were told they would text us when they were ready. We waited 2 hours for them to get 1 room ready. We were able to finally change and get ready to go exploring. We came back at 8:30 to get our 2nd room key. Waited in a long line due to some rude customers giving the clerk a hard time about their bill. The clerk was very patient and never lost her composure. Kudos to her because I could have never kept my cool. The vending machine didn't work and our rooms were not very clean. Pluses were the location and the 414 bar. Suggestion would be to sell cigars in the bar. Great atmosphere and bartenders.
Worst hotel ever.. The lobbys nice and well it stops there. My husband kept saying that it looks like something out of the shinning. They put me in a smaller room and then after we complained about the room size and the mold on the ceiling they upgraded us free of charge so they say. But they just put me in the room size that I requested
The rooms are a bit small and the AC clicks loudly every time it kicks on. Otherwise, everything is wonderful! The staff is friendly (especially in the MOH) and the club lounge served great food and kept the kids entertained at the pool table.
Top expensive. Breakfast is bad, restrooms are from the 70th and it s not clean
Room was clean and nice. A little cold but we took care of that...people were courtesy and kind.
Location is great but the bathroom is out dated the showers need a remodel as well as the water temperature is a rollercoaster ride
Love this place, the location, facilities, restaurant, bar and the history. Best of al the staff.
What a wonerdful hotel. Hotel services was amazing. My family had such a great experience. I was impressed how quickly request were handled. My wife and I are such history nerds so we loved the history of the Sheraton-Gunter hotel. Such a beautiful hotel.
This place has been renovated recently and I must say that I really like the updates. The main floor used to be very drab and dated. Now it's bright and lively. The rooms got a bit of a face lift as well. Nice carpets and the tiling in the bathroom area is great. Only thing is that the room has the potential to get loud with it's proximity to the Riverwalk. Also I'd recommend parking in the garages near by unless you want to pay for valet oy.
Nice, clean, the bottom floor was like a mini museum which was interesting. Unfortunately the 414 bar was closed when i went which is what i was looking forward the most
The lobby and MOH have been beautifully redone. The lighting of the lobby with the sheer fabric is a modern touch the the historic hotel. I learned that USAA came to existence in the hotel. It's a really nice place for a local to visit, in addition to out of town guests.
Very nice hotel that is in the heart of downtown and close to everything especially the riverwalk. The concierge's Room and staff are phenomenal. I really enjoyed visiting with the staff and eating the or d'ouvres and free beverages. Unfortunately, the price is pretty high and rooms book up fast.
Great staff starting with valets, desk staff, awesome servers and omlette guy in the restaurant. Understanding that this is a historic hotel, the bathrooms could still use some work. They try to keep it clean, but unfortunately with the age and obvious wear, that's not really possible. This would get a 5 star if not for some much needed updates in the bathroom. I understand wanting to maintain the originality. Maybe the tubs can be refinished or something. Great place other than this.
Our room is quite big (dbl queen). It is a little dated, but clean and comfortable. The bedding wasn't as crisp and fitting as I would prefer, but acceptable. There was a flat sheet around the mattress instead of a fitted one....I would have preferred not to see the mattress every time the flat sheet was pulled a little. Arriving was a little stressful. There was a line of cars upon arrival at the Valet. There were no carts to unload our luggage onto and the line to check-in was very long. The valet drivers were very agressive and kept asking my teen sons for our keys to park the car, even when they were trying to unload the luggage. They asked over and over for the keys from my sons and myself (I was trying to check in). We made it clear we were using the valet service, but they were extremely aggressive to park the car before we could unload it. We finally were able to get the rest of our luggage out and so far our stay has been great.
Had a fantastic time staying overnight while catching a show at the Majestic. It is a fantastic mix of an old hotel that has been tastefully redone. Very clean and comfortable rooms with minimal street noise despite overlooking the street.
The hotel is across the street from a casino. It's a short walk to the falls. Pretty clean hotel. Parking is limited and you get charged for parking.
the personell at the bar are not friendly.stay for 10 mins never got service
Bar 414 is a great cosy hideaway worthy of a couple of drinks to get away from the hassle and bussle of downtown. Happy hour is great, with the Old Fashion at 5 bucks being a must.
This is a historic hotel so people need to realize some things are a little older but it's very beautiful and a nice hotel for the area close by alot to eat and things to see in San Antonio!! Very nice staff Valet parking is around back there's a nice view of the Town from the top floors!!Very comfortable spacious rooms with nine ft ceilings, love the decor, bed is so comfortable I fell asleep on it right away very clean bathrooms check out this historic Sheraton hotel!! Love love love
The hotel was very old but nice and clean. The problem is room service!!!! Omg it s horrible. My food was so cold at the time it was delivered. When I complained at the front desk I was told we will look into that?!?!? WTH! How about a refund? Nope that did not happen. As you can see I took one bite out of the chicken. All I can say is don t order room service unless you bring your own microwave.
Good but parking is $20 and they did a $50 hold on my card.
This is a nice older hotel that has class and is in a great location near the river walk. My room was nice and my bed was comfortable. They provide extras like a robe, slippers, ear plugs (not that you need them) and even a sound machine. It also has the basics like a mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, safe and iron. I will stay here again
The hotel is nice and near the river walk. Parking is expensive but near the river walk. The restrooms need updating.
It was a nice hotel. No pancakes or waffles at the buffet. The water kept making noise in the night or maybe a ghost.
I m not 100% sure why this hotel has 4.1 stars. I called to reserve 2 rooms a week in advance telling them we had 2 dogs and would like to check in early. I was told I would be able to check in at 11. I arrived at 12. I said I would like to check in and without looking she says we aren t doing early check ins. When I tell her I set it up when we reserved she became very rude talking to me like a child. She said they had so many families yesterday and don t have to guarantee early check in. If I am polite in my body language, and tone I expect you to be too. Especially in a professional establishment. When we checked in the hotel at 3 we were told our double bed is not ready. When I asked when it would be ready they said we had a lot of families last night... not a definitive answer and also not okay. When asked if I would be compensated he said I could talk to the manager. Then proceeded to do transaction and said we could come back to check if room was ready later. If I have to wait, I expect you to call when the room is ready. When rooms are reserved in advance they should be available during check in time. We ended up with 2 king rooms which were not the cleanest. Hair in the bed, hair in the drain, black spots in the shower, and rusty appliances. Later in the evening we got a phone call that our neighbors were threatening to have us kicked out due to our dogs barking and keeping their kids up. (The kids were scaring our dogs). We were told we did not sign a waiver and needed to. When I reserve a week in advance letting you know I have dogs, I expect everything to be in place to include the paper work and room designation. They told us the 4th floor is for dogs. We moved to the 4th floor to avoid the hostility. Overall it was a negative experience. I give 2 stars because the staff that moved us remained polite, and location.
The Sheraton Gunter is in a historical building located across the street from a river walk access point which provides plenty of things to do and see within walking distance. My fiance and I were only visiting San Antonio for 3 nights, so being downtown near everything was beneficial. Service is on point at the Gunter, and the rooms are clean and modern. Definitely have to thank the concierge for the room upgrade upon check in. Love being a SPG member.
Great hotel for it's price very close to the river walk. Second time I've stayed there. Building has historic charm but the rooms seen to have been regularly updated.
Terribly loud AC units, thin walls, and generally dirty all around. Disappointed. Absolutely not a 4 star hotel.
This hotel sucks ! We stayed here last weekend and were overcharged with our stay along with them not applying the promotion that they promised to give us. Thank you for the poor service Sheraton ! I would not recommend staying here at all. In addition, the rooms are old and need renovation.
Overall experience of this hotel is par to any other hotels in the area. I would stay here again if I need to stay in San Antonio if price is low as we got it for the weekend of July 4th.
Hotel: stayed 3 nights, nice decorations in the lobby, valet overpriced, hallways had a bad sour smell. Ice machine worked on 9th floor.
Room 925: double queen. Room itself was very large, able to add a blow up mattress if need be in the room.
Closet is non existent as you can fit maybe ten items in.
Shower and toilet in separate area from sink, which tub was chipped and shower head was really low for average guy height of 5'10".
Sink has no counter space to place much of anything on top.
Bed was below average, huge dip in the middle of the mattress, squeaky, and pillows stiff. Def need a new mattress.
Room temp was great was able to lower the ac down and not have a problem as others said in their reviews.
Did not check out the pool (closes at 11) or the 24 hour fitness center.
Notes: use parking garage across the street at $5 a night.
Breakfast cost $15 a person if you choose to use it.
Hotel is pet friendly, so make sure your room isn't one that a dog was in, lucky enough mine wasn't.
A block from river walk, huge positive for the hotel to be so close.
Historical note: Robert Johnson had 1st recording session in room 414. Sweet Home Chicago.
Downtown San Antonio is full of overpriced hotels with not much choice to select from, so this may be one of them,
Walls are carton-thin and let noise into the room, so ask for a room facing interior. We had a group of 5 staying in various rooms and inside rooms were insulated from exterior noise (though any interior noise like door opening comes through). I stayed in the room facing the street and it was really noisy, you could hear every bus or truck like you would be standing on a street.
Room is about average.
Had a cockroach in the bathroom on a towel when checked in, they are probably running around due to repairs downstairs.
Overall they are going through renovations so you will find some noise inside the lobby during the day which can be annoying when you are waiting for a group of people.
The lobby is beautiful and cozy. I have dealt with their events coordinator. She is very nice and informative. They have a lot to offer for special events.
The beds were not very comfortable and there was a musty smell in our room. Location was good and staff was friendly
I love to stay there they have very reasonable packages for families. Their Market is delicious. The cook is very nice and Cooks the best omlete in San Antonio
The lobby and architecture of the hotel really keeps the old time feel well. The internet is non-usable, couldn't even browse the web. Bathroom looks like it's still the original and tiles/tubs need to be replaced. Bed feels like it's been in use for 10+ years.
Our Memorial Day stay was excellent because of the staff who always went above and beyond to make our experience special. The front desk allowed us to check in early without a charge, they upgraded our room without our request, they gave tourist information including downtown maps and they even gave us toothpaste when we mentioned we needed to buy some. Their recommendation for a restaurant was spot on, and they allowed us to get breakfast to go at no charge.
The valets also hustle to get your car at the proper time and even held our bags when we needed.
This is an old hotel with quirks, character and elegance with an outstanding staff who knows what and who matter.
Special thanks to Rick!
I have been going to the Gunter for many years. It is a wonderful piece of San Antonio history.
Hotel is in a good location and the rooms are clean. Our safe didn't work which was a slight disappointment.
Worst possible experience I could have ever imagined booking or staying at a hotel the lady at the front desk was extremely rude not only to me but to my wife, upon arrival we made sure to ask that we wanted the double bed room and was told that they were two doubles, when we arrived at the room it was a single Queen and we went to the front desk thinking that it was just a simple mistake was told that there was nothing that they could do and said that they could only suggest sending us bedding which they did 45 minutes later bedding that was old nasty and then to top it off the room stunk the whole night I am extremely disappointed with this hotel and I will never book them again and I suggest nobody else does either, and that lady at the front desk was caught multiple times cursing under her breath and when my wife gave her that look her excuse was "it's one of those nights"
Not worth the money. I was looking forward to staying in this hotel. The lobby is beautiful and a must see. The rooms on the other hand are a different story. My room's AC work, but not great. The carpet felt sticky, the TV did not work and there was no hot water for a shower. Also, the bedding seemed odd with no fitted sheet just a flat sheet to lay on. I believe I would have had a better room at the Red Roof Inn. I will not stay at this hotel again, and I will not be recommending it to anyone I know.
Fishy accounts management and awfully slow response on inquiries. I stayed here for a conference for three days in a prepaid room shared with one of my colleagues. We were asked to place a credit card for incidentals and he used his; the next day his credit card was compromised with several dubious charges on his account. So we switched to my card and there was a $600 charge which I expected to be revoked after check out. After several phone calls and emails with my bank and the hotel the issue is still unresolved.
I stayed at this location for 4 weeks (Mon - Fri, not weekends except 7/4/20) starting 6/30/20. Wk 1: I discovered damage to my rental vehicle, including a dent and yellow paint (the same as the poles in the parking area) on the driver side, BUT no one from valet ever said anything. However, Management was great and promised to resolve the issue with Enterprise. Wk 2: My room was upgraded (I was Platinum Elite anyway) to a double room with a parlor. The room had a bad gnat problem, so I was given cups of vinegar to help. Wk 3: My room was upgraded again, but I found the sheets to be disgusting and covered in hair when I pulled back the covers (very nice, thick, luxurious blanket though). Someone came up to change out my bedding, and I requested maintenance for the following day as the sink handle was broken (could not turn on hot water) and the drain was blocked. I got maintenance 2 days later on Wednesday after I went down to the front desk and made a THIRD request face-to-face. Wk 4: no upgrade this time . My room was fine except the hair-covered robe hanging in the closet ( ) and broken ironing board. I received a call at around 11:45 pm on Thursday night from the front desk (Michael) saying I took my keys because valet couldn't find them. I said I left the keys in the car. I got back in bed and then got up a little while later because it dawned on me - YOU DROPPED YOUR CAR OFF WITH VALET AT 6:15 PM! So, why are they calling almost 6 hours later in the middle of the night? I asked Michael this very question and he started explaining how new cars are push to start and require the key to remain in the car.... That wasn't my question, Michael. I asked again, and he said he did not know as 1) valet is a different department, 2) it happened on a different shift, and 3) I could come down and talk to valet staff about it myself. I reminded him that my questions required just BASIC customer service, and I was NOT leaving my room that late at night. He said he'd ask. I hung up but called back for the manager's name and email address. He called me back only to apologize and say it was the wrong valet ticket number and car, and my car was fine. To end a long story, I am VERY unhappy with the overall service and culmination of events. I have already reserved my next 4 weeks (starting 8/3/20), and I will NOT be at Sheraton Gunter.
Very outdated and appearance looks dirty. Not at all what you would expect from a downtown Sheraton property. Hopefully Marriott will enforce some standards and get the rooms updated soon. Just completely lacking in cleanliness.
Beautiful historic hotel. Wonderful staff. Clean rooms.
I believe the face of the hotel is not the front desk personal or the manger at the entrance greeting you ..One in contact with is the Vallet. At any hotel you see them first, you talk to them first.. your ultimate first impression comes from the vallet. Here at the Sheraton they were nice, friendly and polite.
We approached the hotel front desk at about 430 closer to 5 got to the front desk they mentioned to us that there were no rooms ready and had to rush on our room. Which to me was weird cause it was almost past 2 hours check in. Mind you I am on crutches .. they front desk personal sees me on crutches and still suggests me to go walk the river .. My room should ve been completely ready! My room wasn t ready. We finally got into our room and you can tell it was rushed . Bed barely made, trash In the trash can. The room itself was nice but the entire rush thing was strange being that I wasn t an early check in. I would have liked for my room to be ready. Checking out was fast, Out vallet gentleman was sweet. He just smelled of alcohol. but he was super nice and helpful. Will I come back? Yes, I will.
Location of this hotel is close to Riverwalk. Lobby is nice. Room was okay. It doesn't have a small refrigerator and microwave. Staff was courteous. Overall experience was good.
Cool older building within walking distance of many Riverwalk attractions.
Beautiful hotel. Staff is awesome and friendly. Only complaint I have is the bathrooms and the 15 mins you have to run the water before you can take a Luke warm shower.
Amazing hotel! I love the feel this hotel gives. It's from a time long since past. Great rooms with a nice comfortable feel. I like the bar and restaurant on site as it's very convenient for tourists.
The hotel lobby is pristine; just beautiful! I was looking forward to settling down in our room, but the smell of mildew when I opened the door turned me off. The carpet was musty and the dank odor was making us sneeze. The room was not clean. Maybe they forgot to clean it before assigning it to us? There were crackers on the floor in the corner under the curtain, the bed sheets were stained, the walls in the bathroom were dirty. I m glad we stayed for only one night. I could not wait to leave.
I wouldn t recommend this hotel here are my reasons why.
When checking in the guy at the front desk gave us vouchers, he told us we could use them if we ordered breakfast in the morning, well when it came to ordering the rude lady at the front desk told us we couldn t we had to pay for hour late crappy breakfast.
The lady at the front desk is rude, I went down stairs and the lady is on her phone watching videos. I had asked her to warm something up for me and she just looked at me took it from me and didn t say anything. She came back and still was being rude and didn t say anything I apologized because I felt like I interuppted her tv time on her phone and gave my explanation that there was no microwave in our room. Small tip if you don t like working in guest service then don t work in it... because it s not my fault you have to do this job.
Here is my second reason, the 2 bed rooms have the a bathroom that fits one person. If you have more then 1 person that needs the bathroom then your out of luck and need to wake up earlier so that everyone has time to get ready.
Don t be amazed of the pictures of the lobby because the service and the rooms are far from the nice pictures.
Front lobby is highly prejudice towards anyone who is not a guest, food delivery people beware.
So far our stay has been great. We paid a little extra for a care package and it has been well worth it. The rooms are smaller than I care for, but the service is exceptional!!!
I am a business traveler, not a tourist. Keep that in mind.
Service seemed ok. I did check-in online...then had to check-in once at the hotel as well...seems like one of these things could go.
The forced valet parking didn t bother me much. The valet guys were cool and helpful.
Location was ok. Towards the low end of the river walk I assume.
Apparently they have a rule of delivery is not allowed to go to your room. What s the point of delivery then? I am sure it s justified by security or some other made up fantasy.
As everyone else has mentioned; the rooms are extremely dated. For instance; to turn on the light in the toilet room, I had to turn on the sink room as well. One switch controlled both lights. This is a very basic hotel, but even as a business traveler I am accustomed to more than this hotel offered.
The lack of a microwave and the pint sized fridge sucked.
Could not get the room fully dark because the way the curtains are mounted.
There were a pair of cardboard slippers in the room. I can t imagine who uses these things. The TV gets like 12 channels or something silly.
There was no hotel book in my room showing a map, local numbers, hotel amenities, etc.
The bed felt comfortable, but my back hurt every morning. So I am not sure what s up. The tile was loose and I kept waiting for it to cut my foot open. Guess this is why they have slippers?
The positives would include windows that were not broken. A roof. Four walls and a door. Did not stink.
Old world style hotel, so don't expect renovated rooms. Decent value. Customer service is good for the most part.
Thought we got a deal on the room. You get what you pay for. A.c. didn't cool the room under 70 degrees. In February. Toilet took some tinkering to flush. Sheets are secured to bed, scratchy mattress underneath. Ice machine was removed from our floor. 1 star accommodations. But the staff were kind and helpful. Never again. We have paid more for a night trip to S.A., always wondering what other hotels had to offer. Go ahead and pass on the sheraton.
Good location, but older rooms.
Have stayed at the Sheraton Gunter multiple times now. Location is great in downtown San Antonio. Club lounge is nice and has good amenities. Parking is expensive but there is a public garage a block away that is $10 / day.
Hotel has a cool history and old feel. Rooms are unfortunately musty and show signs of age.
Prefer other Marriott properties downtown.
The service at the Sberaton Gunter is great. The staff are very polite and respectful. The whole hotel is beautiful.
The location was great. We walked to the Riverwalk and were right across the street from the Majestic Theater. It was a nice stay overall.
Right across the street from the Majestic theater and just a few blocks from downtown/river walk. If you Don't want to spend $35 for valet parking you can park at the Houston St parking garage. I used it over night and only paid $10.
I've wanted to stay at this hotel for some time as it looks like a great historic hotel from the exterior. Location is great, 7 min walking to just about wherever you want to go. Since it was not directly on the riverwalk it was a little cheaper than others, but it's roughly as good as the others in size of rooms, courtesy of staff, and amenities.
The fitness center is one of the more modern ones I've been to in the city, especially the cardio equipment. Newer Life Fitness models.
Hotel has a couple of bars, including the 414 bar which has a great atmosphere. The lounge is a cool place to relax on the second floor. Has a terrace overlooking the street with a pool table, TV and couch, and during specific times drink and appetizer service. $15 brunch is good, but limited.
Bathrooms are very small, but all the old hotels in SA will be like this. The shower head is about 5'10'' at best so beware for the taller folks.
The view from the rooms isn't the best. You're surrounded by tall buildings so you're just looking at them. If you want better views the hotels off the riverwalk is what you need to go with for the higher price tag.
Overall, if you can do without being directly on the riverwalk, this is the better value.
This place is a beautiful architectural piece. I would convert it into a museum. For me to sleep in a place I need it to be fully functioning. The hotel smells old/maybe moldy. We had a flood from the toilet the first day and a leak from the bathroom ceiling the next day. I wouldn't stay there again. The AC doesn't work properly and makes lots of noise and humidity in the room. Also this is the first time I see a bathroom with a higher level than the room. Staff aren't super helpful nor friendly. They refused to give us a different room saying it's the last one even though online inventory/availability showed some available rooms. It is right across from the theatre in a great location with a Starbucks a minute walking from it. Also close to the river walk. I like the area but hated the hotel.
