This is the worst hospital ever! I've never had to wait in the emergency for 14 hours with only me and two other people....there is no way in hell it should take that long smh... You could be dying and they still won't do there job. Then the want to send those aggravating interns in that can't answer your questions at all.

I live out of state and called to get an update on my son who was in a critical accident.
My first impression, one of the most unprofessional, uninformed, and disengaged hospitals ever.
I realize health care puts little emphasis on customer service. They have terrible receptionists, nurses and no doubt administrators with terrible people skills and over inflated egos. Someone should do something about people at all levels from the person who answers the phone to the nurses to the doctors to the administrators to remedy this first impression.
I guess TV is a direct reflection of what hospitals are really like. In a short and simple statement, suck!
I can't believe when I was back talking to my parent before MAJOR surgery that the lady Susan J (Jancura) I'm unsure how to spell her last name, who works at the desk on the second floor of the heart and vascular center had security escort me out of the building because I had no child care due to this PANDEMIC WE'RE ALL GOING THROUGH!!! And since I live far away I have to bring my child. Which, I was not even aware of the age restrictions until security told me I couldn't have my child there. Employees of Shands ACTUALLY told me to send my autistic child outside the building ALONE!!!!! I only had 10 more minutes before my parent was going to be wheeled away for surgery but I needed to leave then. Thanks lady for being such a terrible person. I hope that for the rest of her life people treat her the way she treated me at a major moment in my family's time of need. Shands I honestly thought better of you than this. I wish I could give negative stars.
Good, knowledgeable doctors. But poor coordination between medical teams. Since it's a teaching hospital, the doctors do rounds with a group of students/interns/residents. Sometimes I felt that the doctor was playing to his/her entourage more than speaking to the family of the patient.
Very bad shands hospital adult E.R. experienced, after I check-in I m waiting in waiting room for more than 6 hours now, still haven t been call in. This shouldn t call emergency room. If I have very bad situation, then I will just die in waiting room. Because it took more than 6 hours to get in see doctor.
My recommendation is if you need to go to E.R. go somewhere else, that you don t have to wAit this long.
You wouldn't believe the lack of professionalism at almost every turn.
Do they intentionally make decisions to keep you there longer, in order to gouge you for a longer stay than is remotely necessary? Yes, they do.
Do they have certain nurses push specific non-medically necessary products that have nothing to do with health? Yes, they do.
Just imagine that level of "care" in the 21st Century, where a low-level nurse comes in and tries to sell you on medical devices that the doctor hasn't recommended. Then gets upset and almost offended when you tell them that you're not interested. They keep insisting that they're safe, and when your doctor says that they're not necessarily safe, and we have several first hand accounts of friends who have experienced horrifying side-effects from them, AND we're not interested in the first place, she goes on about how the internet, blah, blah, blah.
Point is, our friends who delivered at North Florida have had much more positive experiences with their labor and delivery.
This medical establishment was once regarded as a facility in which one could receive a high level of care and compassion. However, it has become a place filled with arrogant doctors with poor bedside manner who care nothing about patients or their families.
I am truly frightened by the care my daughter received at the Shands ER. We walked into the waiting room, and it looked like a disaster scene. Twice we had to endure listening to someone vomiting. People in wheelchairs half clothed. People laying on the floor. The level of care, and lack of compassion is appalling. Without going into any greater details, let me just say, I will do whatever I have to, to NOT go back to the Shands ER.
Horrific experience. I was dehumanized and left to suffer for hours without one doctor or nurse looking at me. I got to the hospital at 1:30 am due to a swelling hematoma in my thigh, and only one doctor ever looked at me and that was around 6 AM. When he finally did decide to talk to me, he treated me with disrespect and left me in tears. Due to me giving him "sass" he decided I wasn't worthy of pain medication and left me to suffer without it until 8:30 AM. And while he walked away from me he gave me a smug look as if to say "I have all the power, what can you do?" The one nurse who saw me prior to 8:30 AM gave me basic ibuprofen and made sure to tell me that "There is no pain medication in this just so you are aware." And told me to put the lidocaine on my hematoma myself. I cried periodically for several hours straight and was in excruciating pain and was met with no empathy or human kindness. Due to my horrific experience I have to head home and drive 5 hours myself with a swelling hematoma in order to go to my hospital back home. I refuse to go to Shands ER ever again, I honestly would rather cut open my hematoma myself and bleed out on the street like a dog than be treated how that doctor and nurse treated me. Lab rats meant for vivisection are treated better than I was treated at Shands. Never go here.
I have been in and out of Shands for kidney issues for the past 2 years now and I have been treated wonderfully every time, from the techs to the docs and I will be with them for many more visits and stays while awaiting my new kidney ( fingers crossed) thank you to all of the staff at Shands my second home..
Worst place to work for. Management do not know how to treat employees and can fire you for no reason and they discriminate between race and its alot of favoritism. If you are in tour six months no matter if you are right or wrong the manager is always right no ifs ands or buts about it. I usually dont do things like this but something must be said because they are not fair at all
I would not recommend uninsured people to go here. I have a teratoma with pain ranging well over 10. I went there waited 8 hours to finally be admitted for pain control and management. one doctor basically laughed in my face like my pain or situation was not important or to be taken serious. I will never go there again. They have no respect nor take out the 5 minutes to read about the patient and why there are here. They play 21 questions and don't care about our health emergencies. The staff is terrible from the housekeepers to the actual doctors. Just disgusted with my last visit 07/06/2014
Most amazing hospital I have ever been to, and I have been to many in several different States. People complaining about ER wait time.. do not go to any level 1 trauma center without a life threatening condition or traumatic event and expect to be seen within a few hours. Go to a small community hospital. I was there for an emergency and I still waited several hours as there was not an open ER bed. The ER Dr. himself came out to talk to me, said he was concerned about my condition and I would get the next bed. I had been to several Dr.'s in NH including DHMC/ Dartmouth which is considered a GREAT hospital.. they misdiagnosed me, I went to FL for winter and ended up at SHANDS. The Dr.'s at DHMC act like they are the best as it is an Ivy league school, guess what? They are not the best, they are arrogant, and have not seen 1/4 of what Dr.'s see at SHANDS. How many gunshot wounds are there in NH? Perhaps a few a year. Anyway I saw a team of Neurosurgeons, ended up having surgery within a day. I thank God I am not paralyzed. The nurses in the ER, pre-op, post-op, super caring. Every Dr I saw was kind, empathetic, and took time to talk to me. I would recommend this hospital to anyone (for a true emergency only).
my hand got real infected and had massive adema when I went to shands they really cared I was admitted they treated me like I was the owner . the nursing staff very professional People may say the nursing staff is bad but that s only a slip up in the shifts !! if could name them I would !! But most the nurses were so compelled to helping me Even Dr.Bensari was attending she was very compassionate!! And Understanding she really cared !! The surgeons everybody Did Such a Great Job !!! I have other health issues and look forward to returning !! Go to a hospital that can do it all !!! And Really Strives In the best of health care!!!
My grandmother went in for a stomach plug/feeding tube replacement at 11:30am. She is diabetic and has high blood pressure and is a severe patient of Alzheimer s. At 8pm they put a IV because we complained after the 10th time. Her blood pressure was over 190 and her sugar was over 360. The response by the nurse was there are other priorities and we cannot prescribe anything until the doctors come . She has not had After 11 hours a doctor still hasn t even looked at her. What a disappointment in Gainesville.
UPDATE: she was just now 4am the following day taken to a room. Still a full day without eating, and without any medication.
UPDATE: Still at the hospital after 24 hours, the doctor just saw her, they still have not fed or provided any medication
Jesus, friend went there for UTI, and took 3 hours , saying it s a shift change when we got there way before . Had no one in emergency room. Like one car in parking lot. Trying to make their hourly rate it seems . Horrible service .next tome we rather drive to NAS Jax
6 hrs waiting to have eye pain seen. Triage is not working properly. Then after that another 1 hr wait in the eye room. Only to be told that the eye doctors are at home asleep and that I just have to follow up at their clinic cause my eye does not seem to have any urgent care needed. I was not given anything to ease the pain in my eye.
The next day when I made an appointment for the eye clinic, I'm told that it will cost me $300 to be seem as they do not accept the insurance I have, which was accepted at the ER.
So I conclude that someone is not doing their job. Or maybe everyone is doing only half their job.
I will, however, still go back if I need to have medical care. But I will be. Prepared. I will have food for waiting in the ER and I will not leave until I'm satisfied with the care I expect.
" I thought TMH was bad, worst hospital experience ever. " Poor bedside manners, bathrooms in er were a mess, and to top it off my husband and I live three hours away. This is the thanks we get for supposedly choosing the best hospital in the region.
Took my Girlfriend for migraine and other medical symptoms. Wait time was extremely long for a close to empty waiting room. Staff was slow and seemed to not care that much about her symptoms. Only positive was how fast that got us blankets. Been in and out of hospitals my whole life and this was one of the worst experiences I ve had.
IF my mother is not properly cared for because she doesn't communicate well and is separated from her primary care giver at this hospital, I will pursue litigation. She has HEAD INJURIES because of passing out at home after being released from having medical procedures at Shands. I had absolute confidence until I'm told THEY CAN'T EVEN GET HER NAME RIGHT today.
ATTENTION: Director of Nursing (This is why I was at her side during her last stay... She does not communicate her issues well. She irrationally "does not want to be a bother.")
Just know will never bring my loved one out here again. The staff on floor 7/5 are a joke!!!! My mother stated how she was mistreated and when they released her yesterday, they brought her down with now brief on and not covered up properly. We would use shands all the time. In my opinion these last few visit my mother has been there, they had gotten worse. You just can t do people any kinda way. Have some respect for people dignity. My mother felt so uncomfortable coming down. Very unprofessional staff. The only time my mother has gotten her best care here was on the ICU floor, when she was on the 8th floor. The other floors was horrible.
What an absolute, infuriating disappointment. Completely disgusting. Staff knowingly left bodily fluids on floor in waiting room, barely attempted to clean, absolutely no sanitizer or chemicals used- the nurse's foot and a blanket she found nearby were all that was used and disposed of in the over flowing trash cans.. Messy, unorganzied, shotty. Waited almost 4 hours with 2nd degree burns (on a Tuesday evening) just to be herded into a ridiculous, makeshift stall in the back to wait another 2 hours. We were transferred here from another hospital and I will NEVER come back here again. Infuriating!!
My mother has unfortunately been a patient at Shands 3x in resent years. She has Tricare Insurance and has chosen to be seen here because of her level of care. We can not say enough good things about her medical team of doctors and nurses. I must acknowledge her nursing staff. She has been taken care of each stay by Nurse Debra Clough who is Amazing! This stay her CNA Clamisha Mayhew has been a Blessing. These ladies are Kind, Caring and Very Efficient. We could not have gotten better treatment anywhere! Thank you for employing such Compassionate and Professional people.
The disease of "being right at any cost" (as opposed to "doing the right thing") has infected the staff of this hospital through all layers. There are a few saving graces which kept me from a 1 star rating, but generally they are newer employees still eager to do a good job with their customers. Yes, customers, otherwise known as "patients" to the terrible attitudes of most of those employed here long enough to develop the attitude of "being right at any cost". How do you fix a problem that so obviously starts at the top? EDIT: Down to a one star. The complaint system is non existent. The patient advocate does not have an email nor can they see a previously filed complaint. The process of turning in a written complaint is basically give it to whoever and it will get to the right place. I think the right place is the trash can.
Wife of patient that is thoroughly upset. My husband who was visiting my daughter in Florida and myself and my husband who was a patient are residents of Pennsylvania and not residents of Florida. My husband was a patient at UF Health Shands hospital and I called and left my name and phone number asking to contacted asking for my husband's results and medical conditions and I did not receive one courtesy call from not one medical physician or nurse. I live in Pennsylvania and I just can't jump on a plane to Florida. Didn't think that I would be concerned regarding my husband's medical condition and other tests or results. I had my daughter pull him out the hospital and put on a plane back to Pennsylvania as soon as possible. How inconsiderate not contact me his wife.
Worst experience ever!! Doctors are totally lost, clueless, impudant, and worthless,. Watch these numb skulls, and watch what you say when you fire them. They WILL try to retaliate! You may get better health care from witch doctor or Ouija swamp woman. They certainly couldn't do any worse than these idiots. I wish there was a zero star rating because Shands doesn't even deserve 1 star. Total wastes of time and very disrespectful to Veterans.
This place was horrible. ER was packed up. 8 he plus wait. I was in bad pain w migraine w horrific left arm pain. "Advised them that I don't feel right" Never got help should never be this kind of wait time in a ER especially. More caring doctors needed.
This is a sorry a** hospital you always wait forever and the staff are very slow u shouldn't have to spend half your day here just sitting nobody doing nothing to get you out quicker!!! Hate it will never come back longest waiting hospital
HORRIBLE AND NEGLIGENT!! ABSOLUTELY NO communication between a dying patient and his family, and that's just the beginning. This place deserves ZERO stars! When the patient died they didn't even notify the family, and hospice couldn't wait to get their claws into his bank account and possessions. All around gross negligence from the very beginning and it stinks of malpractice. STAY AWAY if you value your life or a loved one's life.
Blessed beyond... excellent staff, very knowledgeable, caring, attentive, passionate. God placed me at the best! Very grateful to each and every person for their roles in my journey.
I've a liver transplant, now Throid surgery. I have been in the hospital 2 other times. To tell you the truth Everyone I had contact with were the very best ever! never hesitate to go there the food is good the service even better
The worst experience i had in my life. This place does not prioritize the urgency of some people. I got here at 10a.m. from my chiropractors office he noticed that my speech was slurred and face was a lil droopy he insisted that i got get checked of for fear of me having a stroke. Got here at 10 was seen and got ct scan at 10 20. Needless to say, im still here at 7p.m. in pain muscles spams. With and iv n my arm that has been bleeding for the 2 hours . which i told the p.a. and she said ill be right back. Never saw her again, no nurse or caregiving asked me anything . Needless to say if there is bleeding on my brain im sure i will be dead soon.. This place looks like war zone there is sick people vomiting, diarrhea, a mans pissed on himself . a lady has a 104 fever and is looking pretty unresponsive. Wow!! Im afraid and luckily i have voice to text as now my right arm is dead.. Sorriest place i have ever seen.never have i seen a more disgusting place and for a Hospital at that.. Never ever ever will i refer anyone herw and i work in healthcare.
I absolutely love this hospital, my parents and a friend have been there for a week now due to a really bad motorcycle accident. And they have done nothing but be on top of everything for the three of them. And they have been good at communicating with all of my family on what's going on. I really couldn't ask for them to be in a better hospital. The staff is amazing, and they work super hard to make sure everything is set and comfortable for their patients.
Slow and their process is incredibly inefficient. They get so much recognition for their cancer treatments but fail to do a good job with literally any other condition. Hours of waiting and the front desk is rude.
My husband fell and was in pain. He had a quad bypass 7 months ago and is still having problems with that. We got to the ER at 1:00 pm and they took him fairly quickly for xrays and then they had him get a cat scan and an ekg and blood work. I thought this is good ..wrong. They didnt take him to the back until 11:30 pm. Then they decided to do another cat scan..here we are at 2:45 in the morning still waiting for some kind of info. Dont go here if you are in any kind of hurry. People were nice that is all I can say for it.
I waited two weeks for an appointment. The waiting room is over-crowded, messy, noisy, and unpleasant. My doctor was dismissive of my previous treatments and decisions. I've had enough treatments to know there are no absolute answers. As a professional, I expect and appreciate being treated in a cooperative, not authoritative manner. She embarrassed me over a recent 10 pound weight gain (still normal bmi). My physical exam was cursory and incomplete - lymph nodes on only one side were checked with no comparison to the other side or other locations. The report of my visit stated that items were checked which were not - heart and lungs were not listened to (and other things) This is no "destination" hospital, more like a backwoods, regional hospital. Yet the charge for my visit was more than if I had gone to one of the premier doctors in the country!
My wife had a fall. Ambulance took her to the ER and from that point we were jerked around like I have never seen before. We were there for 8 hours while we just saw employees sitting around doing nothing. Inefficient, slow. Hope to NEVER go back there again.
What a joke! I have been sitting in waiting room for over 5 HOURS! WITH UNBARABLE PELVIC PAIN....MOST PEOPLE SITTING HERE CAME IN BEFORE ME! HELL I THOUGHT WILLSTION WAS BAD....VERY unpleased WITH FLORIDA HOSPITAL ER!!! DONT COME HERE!
DR. GREAT NURSING STAFF IS BAD RUDE DO NOT CHECK ON YOU OR DO AS THEY TELL YOU. 3 HRS NOT ONE NURSE OR NITRO GIVEN FOR PAIN THEY SCARE ME AND I HAVE NO WHERE ELSE TO GO UNLESS I GO OUT OF STATE
I was at Shands for a week and a half and the many doctors and specialist diagnosed my ailment getting me back on the road to recovery. I had a great experience at Shands all staff was great no complaints at all couldn't ask for better care
I found out 2nd wk of June that there was no charge for medical records,I took advantage. I've been feeling rotten for weeks and NOW I know why.. In 2016 shands found that, through a ct scan that I had ms,bone cancer(destructive lesion) and indication of esophageal cancer--- and they NEVER TOLD ME ANYTHING. This wasn't an isolated incident,3 months later they found the same,a bit worse Plus,a New destructive lesion. Again I was not told anything. I've been to their emergency room (main one and a satellite) right at 8-9 times, guess what, they do not even acknowledge the fact that I'm very sick&now not even able to eat ANYTHING!! BEFORE they moved to other side of the street I would not of gone anywhere else,in fact they saved my life Twice, but I suppose now they're trying to take it back. Please don't believe anything they tell you cuz all any of them have done for myself is out&out LIE!!!
My wife and I had our first child(son) here this past March(30)....the staff were very very nice and they were also very professional.Wish I can give them 10 stars
Was recommended by doctor in Ocala to go to shands for my husband's problem with a red blotch on his leg. Went to heart an vascular department. Spent all day to be told its a bad valve in his left leg an nothing then can do for him. Have to live with the problem pain itching numbness an more for rest of his life mainly deal with it. Came home googled it an came up with CVI an they can repair damage valve an vain feel was told this that they can't or won't because we had not insurance. Was told this was one of the too hospital mind you this was the head if this department who seen us an said this rude an no bedside manners. I was in tears when he said there was nothing nobody could do knowing poor blood flow in left leg can put you at higher risk of heartache. I will be writing to whomever is in charge for the lies an b.s. today. Doctors take an oath to save lives not destroy them. All about the money here that's the way we seen it. Took us 1 1/2 years to finally get seen here for what be lied to an run off because basically no insurance.
I have had many experiences here at the shands ER. Most of them bad. Like now I'm sitting here in the waiting room with my brother. He's been waiting since 7 am. It is now1:37 pm! His top lip is completely split about 1 and a half inches long. They didn't give him anything for the pain and only offered him a piece of gauz. The ambulance ride here paramedics didn't even try to clean the wound!!! Just picked him up and dropped him off here. I wouldn't recommend Shands at UF ER to Osama Bin Laden! North Florida Regional Medical Center is my choice from now on for me and anyone I know...or don't know for that matter!!
Excellent facility with amazing staff. This hospital has state of the art equipment with staff that provide warm, personal care. My mother in law needed a brain tumor removed and everyone (housekeeping, nurses, doctors, techs, clerks) made us feel welcome, respected, and important. They truly provide personalized, individual care to everyone that walks through the door. Parking is easy, especially with valet service. I would recommend this hospital to anyone and everyone.
I had high hopes when going to shands for prenatal care.. I was scheduled with midwife Gena C. Rhoden and the first few appointments went so-so.. Until my last appt. when I questioned tests and ingredients in the glucola as well as shots that were being discussed. My concerns were dismissed. I do NOT do pharmaceuticals, I stay away from harsh man-made toxic chemicals, and live a healthy lifestyle. When I asked what was in the glucola her response was "sugar and water" she didn't mention the preservative, the "natural flavoring" or the fact that its dextrose (sugar derived from corn most likely gmo). Obviously she is not very health concious herself. She didn't know the ingredients in the shot (not that I expected her to know off the top of her head) but offering to check for me or refering me to a good resource was expected. She simply said "I don't know" and moved on with the conversation. We avoid animal products, and anything that may have been tested on animals for religious reasons (which I explained at the first few appt.s). She clearly does not listen well. Kept cutting me off and has made the whole experience very impersonal. I really was hoping to be treated like a human who has the right to choose but I'm just another number on her chart. I am 31wks and looking for another midwife. If you have a lifestyle that's different than the average pregnant mama or religious values you hold dear, I suggest looking else where. If you are willing to go with "the program" do as you're told, not ask questions and dont care much about nutrition then this is the "health" care provider for you. All these health care providers care about is procedure, and not getting sued. Don't waste you're time with her only to find out you're choices don't matter.
I m giving this place of healing one star, due to my brother being in the emergency room. The nurses are rude and don t care. I don t understand, why be in the health field if you re not compassionate. They labeled my brother as a number. They have him sitting in the Hallway or space as the rude information staff would call it. To be exact he is in Core 39. My brother has a number of illnesses and he isn t supposed to be in an open area. The Doctor came to see him, the nurse came to see him. They simply don t care. The Doctor loudly repeated my brother s illnesses while being in an open area. The people here are rude and don t care.
For the most part is a good hospital when you don't have money or insurance they kick you out as soon as possible. she should not be going home she should be going to a facility and they're in no way trying to help her.
I have been here on two occasions. Both visits resulted in the failure of the main ER to provide quality, efficient and effective health care. If I had not gone to the satellite ER after the main ER on the first visit I probably would have lost some or all use of my arm for the rest of my life. We ended up going to satellite ER both times. The main ER is in dire need of additional rooms, staff and an effective/efficient/organized structure. I love the Shands doctors/nurses/students/admin staff and I am a very vocal advocate to whom ever I meet, but the main ER gives them a black eye! Please don't misunderstand me, The staff in that facility do their best. I blame hospital management at all levels. Although, my wife and I did observe a UF student with a minor left foot injury getting preferential treatment bypassing 30 or more others waiting including me, with a serious dislocated shoulder condition.
Go to one of the satellite ER's first if you can get there you won t be disappointed!
Very professional and knowledgeable staff in the icu. They keep you well informed and work hard to care for you loved one. The Doctors and residents do a great job on updating you on a frequent basis as well as the critical care team. I thank them and hope that each and everyone of them understand that they have a very important job to do every day and the important part they play in our lives.
This is my 1st and last visite to this emergency room.on 6-25-20 I was at the er for chest pain sitting on the lobby since 1815pm and pass 2:45 am on 6-26-20 and was still sitting in the lobby.all they did was a xray no bloodwork.staff was chit chatting behind the glass doors. Very unprofessional staff and rud.I will never recomend no one to this er.
