Ceci Peifer Review of Shands at UF

I had high hopes when going to shands for prenatal care.. I was scheduled with midwife Gena C. Rhoden and the first few appointments went so-so.. Until my last appt. when I questioned tests and ingredients in the glucola as well as shots that were being discussed. My concerns were dismissed. I do NOT do pharmaceuticals, I stay away from harsh man-made toxic chemicals, and live a healthy lifestyle. When I asked what was in the glucola her response was "sugar and water" she didn't mention the preservative, the "natural flavoring" or the fact that its dextrose (sugar derived from corn most likely gmo). Obviously she is not very health concious herself. She didn't know the ingredients in the shot (not that I expected her to know off the top of her head) but offering to check for me or refering me to a good resource was expected. She simply said "I don't know" and moved on with the conversation. We avoid animal products, and anything that may have been tested on animals for religious reasons (which I explained at the first few appt.s). She clearly does not listen well. Kept cutting me off and has made the whole experience very impersonal. I really was hoping to be treated like a human who has the right to choose but I'm just another number on her chart. I am 31wks and looking for another midwife. If you have a lifestyle that's different than the average pregnant mama or religious values you hold dear, I suggest looking else where. If you are willing to go with "the program" do as you're told, not ask questions and dont care much about nutrition then this is the "health" care provider for you. All these health care providers care about is procedure, and not getting sued. Don't waste you're time with her only to find out you're choices don't matter.
