My wife and I just came back from a 5 night stay at Sandals Royal Bahamian. This was my very first time at an all inclusive resort, and my first time in the Caribbean.
PROS:
1) Variety of food is interesting. Teppanyaki, French, curries, English pub food, burgers, pizza, Italian, etc. all in one place. In theory this is a great thing and there wasn't a reason to eat off the resort.
2) The facilities themselves are well maintained and beautiful. Our room was very clean and comfortable. Housekeeping was very thorough.
3) There are bars everywhere, so most of the time your wait to get a drink was fairly short. Pours were very generous and bar staff knew how to make pretty much everything. Pina Coladas were our favorite.
4) The staff was very friendly! We never ran into anyone who was rude or dismissive. Our interactions with everyone at Sandals were positive.
5) Views are great and it's very pretty, especially coming from 20 degree weather in Michigan.
CONS:
1) Service is VERY inconsistent. While the service was friendly, the quality of the service wasn't always good. For example, when you check in at the resort, there are like 3-4 different people asking you who you are and trying to get you oriented to the resort. It's very confusing and kinda sloppy. This theme carried throughout the resort. Food service was slow, and we'd wait like 10-15 mins before anyone brought water or a drink at most restaurants. At bars, there is no standard way of making a drink. Sometimes you'd get a cocktail with garnishes, sometimes you won't. Reservations were "made" by staff at a restaurant, but the reservation isn't actually made when you get to a restaurant. Ultimately, we learned that you have to be very proactive and clear with your expectations when working w/ the staff, which is not something you want to do when you're on vacation.
2) This place is a logistical nightmare. Signage is sparse, instructions you get for attending tours are pretty minimal (we actually missed a catamaran ride because of this), there doesn't seem to be a strategy for seating people at the restaurants and you may just have to seat yourself. It literally took 3 HOURS for us to get into our hotel room, which is wild to me in a place w/ 400+ rooms. When we went to dinner at Baccarat dinner took 2.5 hours because of the massive waits for appetizers, entrees, and dessert. In other words, if you have an agenda for what you'd like to accomplish in any given day, good luck. Again, you just have to be proactive which isn't ideal.
3) The food, despite the variety is very hit or miss. We kept track of each meal we had at the restaurants on the resort and when compared to the same meal we could have back home, most of the time the food was a 6/10. Spices all around is good for breakfast and lunch, the pizza is very good (actually the best restaurant there oddly enough), and Kimonos for dinner is good. Casanova for breakfast is ok. Baccarat despite the wait times was ok. Every other meal was truly mediocre, which really surprised me given the hype around the restaurants.
4) The amount of overall beach space is VERY small, even when you include the private island. At the resort itself, there are two small beaches on either side of the pier that are easily less than a quarter mile long. The private island has basically 3 useable beach areas, one of which butts up against another resort's property that has a very loud generator. While the beaches they have are pretty, they were crowded and small, which doesn't lend itself to feeling like... you're on a beach vacation.
5) The pools, while beautiful, are freezing cold and not heated. I saw only a handful of people using them during our 5 night stay.
Long story short, there is a lot of potential at this place but there are just some key details overlooked that make me not want to go back. For the money you pay, I'd expect a buttoned up ultra polished experience and this was certainly not that.
