Under staffed, volunteers do what they can. I spent 5 hours. Waiting for 2 hours just to see a kitten. Then not getting to take one home. Had to come back the next day. If your busy this is not the place for you.

So we went here to look for a dog to adopt. We recently lost our 18 year old Chihuahua mix whom I owned for over 17 years. A couple years ago we also lost a 13 year old Shepard Rot mix due to old age. Our 5 year old Shepard Husky mix is lonely without his companions, so we are looking for a nice middle aged dog so our current dog can have a friend. The point is we have been dog owners forever with no issues other than that dogs don't live forever.
We looked at all the dogs and decided on one that we wanted to meet. My wife filled out the application and we waited our turn to meet the dog. They called our number, and when we got to the counter this rude millennial girl informed us that we are not qualified to own a dog because we checked the box indicating that our dogs sleep in the garage or outside at night! We asked what the problem is with that and she rudely informed us that the garage is not climate controlled and that someone could come into our backyard and steal the dog! Uhhhh, this is Sacramento county, it gets down almost into the 30's a couple nights a year, and even on those nights it might get into the 40's in the garage! On the coldest nights we do let our dogs sleep in the house, but it seemed pointless to argue with her.
They don't seem to understand that dogs are dogs, pretty much outdoor creatures until they meet humans. We went to another shelter and found a couple more dogs we like, so we might proceed with them.
I guess what we learned from this place is that to adopt a dog, you must lie. Lie like the life of the dog you are attempting to adopt and love and care for relies on it! You will sleep with the dog in the house on your bed. You will quit your job so the dog can stay indoors all day. You have no children. You have air conditioning. You have no other dogs. You live in an apartment complex that allows dogs (they seem to like that).
As I write this our dog is sleeping on the floor in front of the fireplace. He seems to have a well balanced happy life, even tho the Sac SPCA deems us unfit to adopt one of their mutts.
Upon some more research, we discovered that the Sac SPCA is a KILL SHELTER. They would rather KILL a dog than adopt them out if you check the wrong box their form. They are overloaded with pit bulls, which is the breed of the dog we were looking at, but, as explained above, they would prefer to kill their dogs than allow us to adopt one.
The shelter there is clean. It's not that "homey" looking, but the animals are well taken care of. You will see more chihuahuas and pit bulls than any other dogs. They are more common.
I spent 4 weeks attempting to get 4 feral, friendly cats spayed. No return call. I went to their office and told no available appointment until early November. The cats are nearly mature. So more cats.
I adopted my dog from here and it was a wonderful experience. This second trip to try and find a companion dog was horrible. After finding some great candidates we were told these dogs were not available to adopt because of behavior criteria that they wouldn t share with the public because it was considered negative . After 3 dogs and being shot down not only were our hearts broken but my feelings towards the Bradshaw shelter were very negative. I will go another route when adopting a dog. I feel bad for all those animals. It s a shame they could not make this process easier they would adopt a lot more animals.
Great staff. Did an excellent job under pressure of a standing room only reception room. Very professional handling of a less than pleasant crowd. Plenty of parking.
I was with my grandaughter looking for a kitty. ALL KITTIES were fostered there we didn't get a kitty. The staff were not helpful and really not that friendly. The building was clean inside and the grounds were clean
I made an appointment at the spay and neuter clinic. I showed up with my cat and my papers were not printed out like everyone else's. They looked me up in the computer and then told me "well it seems some of our paperwork didn't get printed out properly today. Don't worry we will take her..."
Everything went well. Their prices are great, and they did not do anything that was not nessisary. I was very pleased.
I was even more pleased the next morning when my phones calendar alarm reminded me of my appointment THAT DAY! See I had come in one day early on accident and instead of turning me away or telling me I was wrong when they looked in the computer they very graciously took blame on themselves and took care of me and my baby on the day we showed up! Best customer service ever!!!
Looking for a new best friend this is the place to go. Staff is accommodating and willing to help. Spay and neuter service and shots Clinic are very affordable.
They took awesome care of our feral Shadow and fixed him and made sure he was healthy. I highly recommend the SPCA and adopt all my fur babies from them as well as get all the ferals who adopt us fixed there!! A+++++++
This place was horrible. They gave up my pet for adoption, which I had her since she was born, I had her for almost 2 years.... This place made me cry so much. They took away what I most loved and the staff was horrible. They were so rude and didn t care about anything. They told us to call them to inform them that we wanted our cat back but they never answered, we called about 10 times! Then the next day my cat was adopted. Then we came to the place and they said they couldn t do anything to get her back...If I could put 0 starts I definitely would! Never take your pets here to the hospital! Worst experience of my life. I ll never forget my baby :,(
After My dog passed away I went to get some puppy love and ended up walking out with a new dog, the staff was very knowledgeable about the dogs and animals they had
The volunteers there did a fabulous job matching us to our dog. And I can't say enough good things about how helpful their training classes were.
Yes, they are bad about answering the phone and returning emails. That's because they are staffed mostly by volunteers. So if you are frustrated about the response time, why not volunteer to help out?
We had to put our Lab down. One thing I feel is a really great thing, (but that might annoy some people), is that you are required to have a vet note advising euthanization, unless it is not extremely obvious it needs to be put down by staff. This protects animals from just being brought in and killed. (I do have to wonder if there aren't animals being turned away from here that aren't disposed of inhumanely, but I would hope that possibly they would surrender them if they are that desperate. Idk...) Anyway, at first my Lab was going to be turned away as they felt he was too healthy and not acting as I had described (13+ yrs old, lethargic, and barely able to walk), but I knew he was acting excited because he could smell other dogs there and after we were there about 10 minutes he laid down and was back to his old grumpy tired self. I still could appreciate the girl at reception being concerned and she had called a vet for approval. The vet called her back and agreed to the procedure because of the breed and age of the dog. Still, I can appreciate this and her concern, as humane treatment is a priority there and I was treated very professionally and not at all rude. It was a VERY clean office, especially considering they must have animals being brought in constantly.
They are always ready to help you if your looking for a forever friend. If you dont see any friends when you go in. Wait a couple days, the friends are always rotating in
I m currently visiting my family here in Sacramento and just rescued two adult cats that had never been vaccinated. I decided to stop into the office to inquire about getting my two cats vaccinationated and fixed due to the fact that I couldn t get through to the phone with anyone for a week and kindly left one VM with no call back. As I walked in and kindly asked the two ladies at the front desk if I was able to get an appt today or tomorrow, and they replied that it wasn t doable which was understandable because it was too soon. So then I proceeded to ask for a list of vet clinics around the area. To my surprise I was answered with the most utterly rudest response about not being able to find someone else that can do it on the same day as they looked at me as if I wouldn t be able to afford a vet, and some crazy lady for wanting to put my cats through hell or something.
Overall, was treated so poorly and given all the good reviews for SAC SPCA from the community, I had a terrible experience. I guess people should find a new profession if they don t like their jobs. This is very sad. I ll take my money elsewhere even if I have to pay hundreds to see a private vet.
1st. - I had an Appointment, to Adopt a homeless cat. They told me it wouldnt be more then 35.$ to adopt a homeless abandoned cat. Once we got there, they made us WAIT VERY LONG... AND AFTER I SEEN THIS POOR HELPLESS CAT THAT NEEDED LOVE AND A.GOOD.HOME. AND FELL IN LOVE WITH HIM, THEY TOLD.ME AFTER TAXES AND ALL HIS SHOTS THE COST CAME.OUT TO ALMOST 300$ . Ummm. Okkkk. Even after i finally said ok fine ill pay for him whatever he needs... They told.us that we have to.come back on Thursday in the morning. And it was Friday that day. So we even payed and waited another week. And after all that they called us and told us he had to be put down because of some disease that they didn't find until just then. Umm .. I didnt know how to tell my 9 year old niece that the poor cat she and i fell in love with got put down. . . i lied to my niece and told her he finally did get.to.go home after all.. I sware go god i get chocked up about it when she tells me she hopes hes happry and loved with his.family. so ill stop there..
And let you be the judge. WOULD YOU EVER GO TO A PLACE LIKE THIS KNOWING THAT THERE ALL FULL OF LIES.. AND BS.. AND ALL ITS REALY ABOUT IS MONEY. I WOULD REALY HATE TO THINK THAT THERE ARNT ANY GOOD.KIND.HEARTED PPL THAT STILL WORK.THERE. all i realy care about are the.animals... I can.only ask God to watch over them.
This shelter is full of amazing vet techs and volunteers alike working hard to help their counties homeless animals. They keep Their facilities clean and as welcoming as a shelter can be. Adoption process is simplistic and for the most part quick. Their vet clinic is fantastic! Low cost is an accurate description, and they truly care to get your pet back the themselves again. They even run special days when the shelter is full to adopt as many animals out as possible either free or discounted prices so they dont have to euthanise all of these poor abandoned animals. Great shelter doing great things.
Just came in for the first time a few days ago for my kitty. The lady working the desk was super friendly! She made me feel okay about the whole thing. That was the second time ever having to get one of my cats fixed. Now I don't know how it went because I wasn't in there but I'm sure it was a lot better than back in the day when the free clinic told us to put our cat in a pillowcase so they can give her the shots.. Anyway, I recommend! They're quick and very nice.
Best location I've found for my little fur baby they truly love and appreciate animals, and understand how good pet owners think, and what we need to help our pets be at their very best. They are friendly, they listen, and explain in detail anything you have questions or concerns about. Even if you live far from here, it's worth the drive!
This is a wonderful place to rescue a pet. I would remind people that if you want to bring home a new family member, bring your family and current pets with you to the facility to be sure everyone is a good fit. I would highly recommend checking online first if it is an option.
I took my boys there to be altered. I was rather nervous at first. Seeing how caring they were with other animals put me at ease. They took very good care of my boys. More people should stop by the SPCA or local animal shelter near them. "We all need a forever home."
Best people ever. I was in a real jam, had to move out of my house, tried re-homing all my kitties for 6 weeks and SacSPCA was the only help at the end. Please donate to this incredible organization, as I did. They saved many lives
They are excellent people to help you out and cheap if you don't have many like me thank you for all the work you do the compassion about them thank you .
They really accomidated me in what wasp the hardest worst day ever. The staff was so kind and caring. They made sure that my girl was at peace and comfortable. This is Sadie she was a rescue puppy. She was awesome and so was the SPCA.
Great low cost spay & neuter. Unfortunately they overbooked on the day we had an appointment. We ended up waiting in line for close to 2 hours just to drop off our cat.
I'm a three-time adopter and have been a volunteer for 10 years - and I couldn't think of a better place to dedicate my time. The care that staff provides for all their animals is unparalleled, complemented by dedicated volunteers. I've also used their low-cost spay and neuter services for community cats in my neighborhood - it's truly an asset to the community.
If you want to adopt or just help out animals, the Sacramento SPCA is an invaluable part of our Sacramento community, and I am grateful for all they have done and all they continue to do.
Staff is awesome here, so helpful and friendly and really care about the animals. We adopted from SPCA 3+ yrs ago and had a great experience so went back again. Unfortunately, we didn't adopt this time but met w dogs then introduced them to our dog and even met w a behavior specialist since the potential adoptee was a bit unsure around our easy-going pup. Ultimately, the behavioral specialist as well as our family saw it wasn't a perfect match so we decided not to adopt. Will always be open to adopting from here in the future.
Everyone is very nice and made me feel better about my situation. I was surrendering my cat I was in tears Britney was wonderful she knew I was upset I left feeling I did the right thing. Please donate to help them take care of these animals in the shelter.
