Tried to make appointment to see vet...waited on hold for 10 mins, hung up tried again.....still waiting....hung up and tried again 10 mins later now I'm the 7th person in line waiting to speak to someone so had to end call....just terrible service
After reading reviews booked elsewhere

Extremely dissatisfied with the service and the operation of this facility. Do NOT recommend if your pet is undergoing any serious surgery. Unprofessional conduct. Disgusted. Not only is my dog still suffering from an infection post surgery that they failed to diagnosed and treat properly after 5 visits within the space of 3 weeks, they FAILED to remove the needle from the dip out of my dogs legs (my surprise when I discovered this once I had arrived home).

Being an owner of four rabbits and a new kitten.i have found tje Lort Smith to be one of the best vet services ive experienced so far.they are always there to give advice over the phone.they offer great prices and are friendly and acessable.I recommend anyone to give these guys a go before their own local vet :-)

I had a Golden Retreiver named Honey who I took there as she had been vomitting and not herself. Honey was 12 years old and ultimately the decision taken was to euthanize her as her age and the fact we didn't want her to have to go through invasive surgery after exrays showed she had other issues. Staff were all very supportive and empathetic.

Great vet practice. Spacious, ample parking, mostly friendly staff. Expensive, though I think most vets are. One of the reception staff was quite dismissive and rude on the phone once but the rest were good. We will gladly return!

Great vets very respectable. Only recommendation is that euthanasia consults be paid before hand so you don't have to wait in a line for 20mins carrying your beloved pet in a body bag.

Been here several times, the staff have a difficult job to place all the animals that we humans reject. We need this business to stay open as a necessity. The director is what makes the Lort Smith.
Customer service is outstanding.

Cannot thank Lort Smith Animal Hospital enough for looking after my boy. My mother use to take her dogs there in the 60's because she thought they were the best. They still are ... my boy gained his angel wings on the 2nd November 2019.

They are always excellent here.

They are always excellent here.
They have saved a few of my family members over the years.
Thankyou so much.
(I just wish this sort of stuff wasn't so expensive.)

The most beautiful caring compassionate people. They did all they could for my very sick baby. And handled her with the same love that her furparents did. Their compassion, understanding & patience with myself & my daughter was second to none on that terrible day that our 16 year old Sweetheart took her last breathe. Thankyou all so ver much

Can t recommend highly enough, not for profit, amazing volunteers and the highest skilled people around. When your local vet needs help they head here. When I can fund raise it goes here.

Couldn't speak more highly of Lort Smith. We had the unfortunate experience of having to bring our wee girl Mia in to say goodbye. The team made sure Mia was looked after and calm and was very empathetic towards me while I was coming to terms with it all. The vet, I believe Jessica, was so understanding and allowed me to stay with Mia during and afterwards. I can't thank you all enough for the care shown. And really appreciated the personal card we received later that week. Hopefully we don't have to come back for such a horrible reason next time but would recommend you and the team for any vet care in the future

Your websites a joke, why bother even showing the pets that have been adopted already? All you're doing is advertising cat's you don't even have, so definitely no point even comeing down in person... what a joke.

Price: Elsewhere I was quoted $7,000 - $9,000 for emergency care for my dog. Lort Smith quoted $1,200 for the same thing.

Care: I found them helpful, down to earth and knowledgeable with a real love of animals. My dog could not have been in better hands.

Attitude: Don't expect 'fluffy'. These are very busy, very practical people. They are agreeable people, caring and patient beyond what I would be able to endure (see below), and they spend all the time you and your pet need examining and explaining. They take their time with your animal and are gentle and thorough. But don't have the unrealistic expectation of being pampered, the hospital is just too busy for that. If you're there being rude and demanding, it's a different matter: expect to get what you give!

Wait times: I was blown away at how busy Lort Smith are. If you do not have an appointment and your pet is in no immediate danger you are in for a wait. In a real emergency you'll be seen quickly - we were. Unfortunately, when I was there I witnessed a number of very demanding and down-right rude people without appointment or emergencies trying to push for vet attention, which causes a lot of stress for the staff and does eat in to their time. I hear that this is the norm.

In all, I am keeping Lort Smith's number up on my fridge in case I ever need it again.

My dog got run over. These people are just money hungry dollar grabers so much for it been a not for profit place. Sincerely my dog was dying and these people were worried more about the money rather than the attention of the dog. There was a nurse who kept harrasing us to sign and fork out 4.5k. This place sucks.

According to doctors' suggestion, I book a "professional " special doctor for my pet, that day, this doctor just chat with me, and I pay 100 dollars for this talking. I pay 100 dollars for a doctor who just talk unuseful things with me ,

Kelly was rude to someone who donates money every visit.

My family and I have been going to Lort Smith for at least the last 17 years. Today however I was very disappointed with the woman I spoke to on the phone to book in my dogs yearly vaccinations. I had received a reminder message FROM Lort Smith that my dogs are due for their vaccinations, however when I called today to book them in for a few weeks time, I was told to go elsewhere. Kelly was rude, and did not elaborate. She said they're understaffed and I can only bring the dogs in one day at a time instead of back to back appointments which has never been an issue in the past. This did not make sense to me (how much longer would it take to vaccinate 3 dogs on the same day as opposed to 1 dog on 3 different days?) Why should I drive back and forth 3 times? I was happy to wait until back to back appointments would be possible but was still told to go elsewhere.
It's a shame, most of the time the people answering the phone are very friendly. Terrible experience today. I donate money every single time I visit Lort Smith, and yet told to go elsewhere. Will be finding a new regular vet.

This is a great vet hospital. They look after pensioners with discounts and my 14 week old puppy was in acute care for 2.5 days and they really were amazing. Their emergency after hours service was excellent and his follow up care as well.

The receptionist Alexia was so rude to me over the phone. I wanted to pick my dog up because Lort Smith didn t know what was wrong with her and take her to the specialist who was waiting to see me. She said I could not pick my dog up without making an appointment . When I got there, she tossed my lame dog who can t walk into the dog pram and she was facing the wrong way around. When I told her she twisted my dog around in the pram and threw the discharge notes in the pram and said There s your dog . My dog can t walk. She displayed cruelty to animals. It s captured on CTV at 7.20pm on 26/11/18. The lady sitting near me could not believe it! I am going to contact management tomorrow. She should not be working there. I will never go there again. Imagine how they treat your beloved animals behind closed doors. It s an absolute disgrace. Beware of the Lort Smith Animal Centre! Do not go there if you know what s good for you and your pet! Absolutely appalling behaviour!

The receptionist had an extremely rude attitude. I will NEVER go back again!

I took my kitten for vaccination, but as soon as I arrived, I was told my appointment was cancelled. The receptionist insisted she left a voice message to my phone, but I DIDN T get any. NO text and NO email, either. She didn t care if I receive the message or not and replied to me with very rude manner. She even told her manager that I got the voice message and rolled her eyes when I was talking to the manager. EXTREMELY RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL, and I ll NEVER visit here again.

Lort Smith push Hill's Science Diet on new pet owners - beware!!! This dry food is very expensive for what it is and it is made in Kansas, USA by Colgate-Palmolive!!! Please Lort Smith, don't take money from Colgate-Palmolive and please promote locally made and locally owned pet food companies!

Worse than bad. More expensive than a local vet, my pet was roughly treated - worse than a piece of meat, misleading info given on the phone. If you want to wait 2 WEEKS with an open wound for surgery go to them, l would advise ANY OTHER vet practice over them. The vet l saw didn't believe what l said, making her own opinion vocal - which was totally incorrect. Then l'm reprimanded for actions l didn't do!!! The whole experience was extremely traumatic for my pet and a total waste of my time. This vet should be ashamed of her words and actions!!!!!! I will NEVER speak a positive word about Lort Smith.

Cant say enough about them the vets and nurses are so helpful, they saved our dog from dying and really love the animals there l wouldnt take my animals anywhere else this place is a godsend.

Our experience with Lort Smith was generally disap...

Our experience with Lort Smith was generally disappointing, apart from those few lovely and caring veterinary nurses we interacted with whose focus was the animals best interests.
Otherwise the veterinarians are either pressured by the organisation or individually regard profit as their salient motivator.
The fees for medications and diagnostic tests undermine the rights of animals to receive accessible and high-quality care.
Our dog was discharged with a diagnosis which did not explain the acute collapse she experienced. Whilst we are grateful that the basic treatment applied resulted in her recovery, it would have been shocking had we accepted the diagnosis and offer of euthanasia as one of the options.

The veterinarian provided inconsistent explanations for her condition, revealing either breakdowns in communication amongst staff or ignorance. The fees for treatment are consistent with a superior and flawless standard of care yet this is not so. No vet was available on discharge so there was no discussion about the excessively high cost of medications prescribed nor that some of these were available over-the-counter at retail pharmacies. The lack of empathy for people who regard their animals as part of the family and who, though not qualifying for health care card concessions, may not be in a financial situation, is a worring reflection on the fact that a love and respect for other animals cannot be defined by the individual's socio-economic status.

This facility promotes itself as a provider of Emergency Care yet the disappointing and concerning reality is that the availability of other than basic diagnostic investigations is restricted to Monday - Friday office hours unless the 'specialist vet' is available out of hours and the client agrees to pay above the usual, already inflated fee for these procedures.
This is not how an emergency facility operates and it reflects poorly on the rights of non-human animals that inequitable restrictions are insitu.

A major contributor to the abandonment of animals is the exorbitant cost of veterinary treatment . The animals awaiting adoption in the Lort Smith facility is therefore hugely ironic. Lort Smith is a central and large facility which sells itself as being progressive and 'for the animals'.

Research has indicated that veterinarians are a cohort which experience a high rate of suicide. The incongruent attitudes manifested by this profession would have to be a factor. An infinite number of animals are killed (euthanised) due to their human being unable to afford the fees quoted to treat them.
For the sake of the animals, their carers and also the vets' welfare, there is an urgent need to address the negative effects of the high health care costs on all involved.
The staff of Lort Smith are well placed to campaign for standardised and subsidised health care costs, so why are they failing to do so?

A great clinic with competitive pricing and wonderful caring staff.
Also they reinvest profits into the rehabilitation of rescued animals.
They also offer discounts for pensioners and affordable payment plans.

Some vet and a supervisor need to be sacked. They threatened me and sent my sick dog and I away. Yet their mission statement on website says will never turn any animal away. Pfft. How far from the truth is that.

Long wait time (>2 hours), with no update. The only reason we were there this time is because they provided us medication at first for which our dog reacted horribly (we understand this is not anyone's fault), but were then made to pay $106 for a follow up appointment to pay for a new prescription. We were just lucky our doctor was good.

absolutely the worst place you would take your pet...

absolutely the worst place you would take your pet too, unprofessional, don't know what they are doing, and completely incompetent.
The services manner are good, but after all, you need to know what you are doing!

We would like to appreciate the male veterinarian ...

We would like to appreciate the male veterinarian with blond, shoulder-lengthed hair at the evening emergency department/team, who was professional and compassionate throughout the whole consultation. Although our little budgie passed away at the end, the vet had ensured that he was given the best veterinary care before he passed way peacefully. The nurse who held the inital consult was also polite and we were impressed by their kind manner.

The receptionists were okay, not considered as rude but not particularly polite either - but I believe they were busy at all time, so my only comment was that the manners could be slightly improved there. The waiting time for the landline and reception was also long, but again understandable given Lort Smith is a busy animal hospital.

In overall, I would recommand this hospital to everyone, based on my personal experience.

I'll never visit Lort Smith Animal Hospital again ...

I'll never visit Lort Smith Animal Hospital again !! its is "nightmare" for me putting my loverly dog Mimi down 10 days after routine ACTH stimulation for her cushing syndrome. She was doing well before carrying out the routine test, its heartbreaking to me to put down my loyal family but still don't know what's actually happing !

It was around the end of July when we nearly run out medication, I made phone call for getting capsule, but the untrained receptionist rejected our requirement unless we make routine test, we been purchasing the medication without routine test because sometime we just can't make the day which suits for us, sometime u get before sometime we get after but we always get it. My pet been taking cushing syndrome treatment for more than half year we just can't stop it. However, they don't allow me to get capsule so we have no capsule left 2 days before routine test, it is unprofessional and unacceptable.

When I got appointment on 1st August Doctor said they suppose to give me capsule or this is pointless to carry out ACTH, but we still doing some test. but need to make another appointment to do the ACTH again on 12 August.

On 16 September we carry out another routine ACTH, this is where the "nightmare". NO ONE contact us more than a week, I make phone call to leave the message they say they will call me back, I send a message from their review after we visit, no feedback, I leave a message again from their homepage, no thing happen, I went straight to hospital to leave a message personally from of the reception again they say again they will call me back. WHAT A SERVICE ! We come back for routine test because we understand it could be death or life for giving correct amount of capsule to our pet and Lort Smith does't take seriously. very unprofessional.

Then we got a phone call form hospital I think more than 10 days finally got some one call me, the cortisol level is pretty much same as previous, what are you been doing. Also got a result calcium level is a lilt bit hight and they want us take Ultrasound but we didn't take this time.

The last chapter, we didn't expect the last time routine ACTH stimulation is the end of journey we said goodbye to my pet 10 days after the test. To be honest, we still happy my pet doing well even if we have such unpleasant experience before. She was very happy we we took her to the routine test on 17/12/19, she seems to be less energy, drowsy for first two day and start vomiting and diarrhoea, also not much appetite, lossing 1.4 Kg in a week so took her back to hospital for emergency, by the way, NO one contact us ACTH result, same as last time.

And when we met the doctor she just like OH our staff just looking Mimi's test result this morning we just want to call you now, I DON'T BELIEVE IT ! And the result showing that her cortisone lever is too low, you know she is taking medication which will bring her cortisone level even more lower and you didn't tell me ! WHAT A TEST YOU DONE I almost kill my pet ! Lucky my wife got nursing background we stop your medication and bring her back to emergency, why no one contact such important info !!!

Then my pet stay in hospital for first night and take blood test showing calcium is too high, this is common sense when she losing 1.4 kg per week and Dehydration the calcium is going up. We still trust you let you do more test, including Pancreatitis and Ultrasound.

Next day when we came back to visit my pet I can tell she been sleeping with her "POOP" last night I know you take her for bath when we made it, But, I can't believe what I seen she got POOP around, my wife is crying, HOW YOU LOOK AFTER MY PET !

Then tell me Ultrasound show Thyroid tumor Negative, can't not discharge her need to do CT scan ! And I ask how about the Pancreatitis, they said OH let me check, 10 minutes come back OH Pancreatitis is Negative too !
Need to do CT Scan ! no one tell us the risk of the test !

We discharge her to U VET Werribee, she is bleeding, We sadly put her down ! My Love pet Mimi,

I rather give you ZERO if I can !

The staff here are really professional and very passionate about animal welfare. I have adopted pets from here and used the emergency vet service. We were looked after really well even though triage was incredibly busy that day. Lort Smith does an amazing job.

I will. Never. Go back. I was told to surrender my animal, I had waited nearly 2 hours while they held my cat in the back, to even be seen, understandable there was an emergency, but people who came after me were being seen. My cat who hadn't eaten in weeks and was vomiting. I have tried everything and I was at Wits end, I couldn't bear to see her in pain any longer. So i, as her distraught fur-mum, had brought myself to the mental situation of putting her down. Which is up to her owner, not a vet who doesn't know what pain she's in. I was told that, that was not going to happen and the only two options I had were to do tests on her at my own cost, or to surrender. I don't have the income to do countless tests, they didn't even offer a payment plan to do the tests. I refuse to surrender my cat, to a vet who's rude and rough. He had done two IV's and one of them had obviously failed. My cat was taped from the elbow to past the end of the paw, that tight she couldn't even bear weight till the next day.

As you can see the two photos attached, before we went, she was enjoying the car ride in the sun.
The other photo she didn't even want to be in the room let alone near the vet itself. When she was given back over after the IV was taken out. She was scratching and kicking to get back to me.
I will NEVER go back and I will be finding someone high to complain too.

Thank you for helping me find Jitters (now named Sophia). They will sit with you and talk to you about everything you need to talk about. These souls need a loving home so go down and find your friend please. My dog is so soft and sweet. Very happy here. Can't wait for coming days, months and years. Many memories along the way. And she snores like a drunk. Haha

Its a great place. definitely the go to get if your pet needs emergency care or surgery as the vets are very knowledgeable. also very affordable, in comparison, its great they offer a discount to low income earners, pensions and offer payments plans.

3 stars not due to the care of the animals but because unfortunately this vet gets very very busy. they are not for profit and are not government funded so it us not their fault and i appreciate the care they get.

other reason from 3 stars is as, although vets and nurses are wonderful. the receptionist staff are a hit or miss. ive had 80% of a good and lovely staff at reception. but ive had a few old bats, and cows who are very rude, hostile and in my personal opinion should be executed :). okay thats a bit extreme but they shouldn't have a job there.

While I did come across a very rude blonde receptionist once I'm not going to let that hinder my review. This place allows struggling families to go on a payment plan for their vet bills and that's a very noble thing. Not everyone has money to pay surprising vet bills at the time and this helps families keep their pets alive and gives them another option. Their service is great, the vets and nurses I've had experience with are super friendly too. Thank you
