One of my favorite places in Houston. It has very open feel to it. Within three buildings, you can find art for your taste. I prefer American late 1800 s as far as paintings. I also enjoy reading the wise sayings on African shamans canes. If you have not been, definitely check it out.

Wow! I cannot say enough wonderful things about this museum!!! As a New Yorker I am a bit spoiled when it comes to fine art but honestly! This museum has such an incredible collection, certainly one of the best art museums I've had the privilege of visiting in the US. Easily spent 4 hours here, fantastic collection of European paintings and very unique early American paintings you won't see elsewhere! There some pieces by well known artists (de Kooning, Rothko, Pollack, Degas). The works of these artists felt fresher to me than the ones I have seen by them elsewhere as they are lesser known pieces so it felt like I was discovering something new.

Free after 5pm on Thursdays. Great exhibits, join the mailing list to see upcoming exhibits. Parking garage is a bit pricey. Street parking is a challenge to find, allocate extra time to drive around. I'd suggest parking elsewhere and riding the METRO LightRail Train. Or parking at the McGovern Rose Garden a walking over a few blocks.

They have a lot going on here and they always have world class rotating art exhibitions. I really enjoyed coming here with my wife and friends. One of my favorites was "Soto: The Houston Penetrable" which can be seen in the pictures of this review.

I recommend checking out their website for the most current exhibitions happening here.

The museum itself is fine. There are a lot of interesting exhibits and a nice thing to do on a Sunday afternoon. However, that's not why I am giving this 1 star - one guard ruined this entire trip for me. She actively followed us around in a crowded gallery where the still life's are in a way that no one else was. When we turned the corner she followed and I loudly said, "wow, we are really getting followed like we are going to steal something off the wall" and I glared at her. People stared, and that's when she turned around and went back to her section. No one else was followed, no other guard was so "vigilant" - we left a review at the end of our visit and we aren't going back.

One of my favorite places to go to when in Houston. Thursdays are the best days to go because museums are free on that day. However, there are more people. For parking, it's a little difficult now that they are doing construction in the lot where I normally park. So street parking it is, however make sure that you read the signs, it's tricky so don't get towed.

There's great art to look at in this museum. Again, it's one of my favorites. The staff is also very friendly. If you ever get hungry, there is a cafe!

I had to wait over an hour to wait for my child to be permitted to leave the edifice just because of the dignitaries that were there. It was a school night!!! An officer told me to just keep circling the block. Really?

Free general admission on Thursday (free parking, too), so we got to see the rest of the museum after the Van Gogh exhibit.
They also have happy hour on Thursdays with some great drink specials!

I have been coming to Museum of Fine Arts Houston ...

I have been coming to Museum of Fine Arts Houston almost all my life given I grew up here and I have seen the changes, the improvements to be specific, to MFAH through out the years. The museum's main campus consist of two main buildings, the Caroline Wiess Law Building and the Audrey Jones Beck Building. Both buildings are connected with an underground tunnel that every patrons need to experience at least once. You can also go from one to another on the main street level as well. Caroline Wiess Law Building has a gallery for rotating exhibit along with the permanent exhibits of MFAH collections of Asian, African, Islamic, Native American, Oceanic, Pre-Columbian, and Modern and Contemporary art. This building also house the movie theater, a library, and an education center for the youth.

Audrey Jones Beck Building also have space for rotating exhibits along with the permanent collections of ancient art, European art, photography, prints and drawings, and American art. This building is where the cafe and the gift shop are located at. One thing about the MFAH is that it is free for the permanent exhibits every Thursday courtesy of a giant corporation. The museum also have special events with extended hours on Thursday as well. Thursday is definitely a great day to come visit MFAH. Now the permanent exhibits are good but not as quite exhilarating compared to other major metropolitan's Fine Art Museums. Then again, maybe it's because I visited so much that I feel like it's the same old, same old even though I know for sure we have a rich collection from all areas of the world and various eras too.

But what does make MFAH interesting from time to time is the rotating exhibits. Some of the highlights I've seen including now current ones with Edgar Degas and Chinese Art from the National Palace Museum, Taipei are phenomenal. The layout for these exhibits are well thought and very informative. Then there's also the membership for the museum. I used to be member until recently with financial strain that I cannot renew it anymore. But if you are a member, it is worth every penny as you get special events and sometimes special privilege to check out the rotating exhibits before the public.

I am very glad that Houston does have an outstanding Fine Arts Museum here and I know there's a plan for major expansion through 2019. I cannot wait to see the changes to come.

Matisse and Monet to ancient antiquities. This was a pleasant surprise. Standard exhibits span 2 buildings. Leisurely stroll through all takes about 3 hours not including rotating exhibits (which are a supplemental fee)

Very nice. Great & enjoyable place. Why not 5 stars? Because the collection is somewhat fragmented, and there is not much of a story line. Still, several very enjoyable hours to be had here. Beautiful place.

There is always a World to discover around the next bend. One can never go wrong with a membership, new exhibits will come and you'll be back to see them. Always take advantage to go on opening nights or when the artist is on hand to preview the works. And don't forget to wonder through the gift shop. Happy discovering....

A beautiful museum with lots of art work from many different regions and time periods. I went during an exhibit that showcased Norman Rockwell's works. The exhibit was very well put together. Small audio guides were provided that allowed you to listen to museum experts talk about each piece and give some background information. The museum is spread over several buildings. It was a little confusing because there were not many signs outside to direct you where to go. Finding parking was a bit confusing as well because the parking garage was not obvious. The art museum also has a cafeteria inside. If you go as a casual observer, you should be able to see the entire museum in about 4 to 6 hrs.

Wanted me to check stroller canopy at coat check . Way to encourage children to visit. Least avant-garde museum gift shop worldwide . Food portions are a quarter what they used to be.

First time visiting and really enjoyed the interactive Van Gogh exhibit! The museum is huge so we will be back to see more of what we missed the first time around. Staff was friendly and the museum was clean. The parking areas and entrances could be better labeled for the museum areas. We will be back again!

Buddy and i spent the better part of a day there. Starting with breakfast in the cafe-very tasty and affordable!

Then we purchased tickets to the special Windsor exhibit. The ticket agent was the best, very personable and knowledgeable. We later found out he's a professor of arts that teaches drawing at Lone Star college.

Windsor exhibit was huge and so much information on the royals it takes charts and timelines to figure out who did what to whom. The marriages alone boggles the mind. Then we progressed to the Windsor gift shop and had an absolute ball deciding what to purchase as a souvenir.

The gift shop had also set up cardboard cutouts of royals to take pictures with, but none of Harry & Meg??? So we asked one of the cashiers about it and they winked and led us towards the back where they'd stashed the cutout couple. What an absolute hoot, we took pics and they took pics of us together with the cardboard couple. Many laughs and much thank you's all around. The staff at this museum is top notch and very affable. They like their job's and are devoted to this museum. Security is first rate and they also are approachable.
After the special exhibit we went back to cafe for coffee and dessert before exploring the rest of museum. Bread pudding is a specialty of the chef and they enjoy creating unique combinations. We had the chocolate offering...ding ding ding it was delicious!

Being from St Louis, MO i judge all museums by my hometown collection standard, and i must say the MFA did not disappoint. Their collection at least represents every famous artists you're likely to have heard of, while maintaining space for the contemporary, modern, and newest emerging artists.

We could have spent days here, as it was, we walked in at 10:00am and walked out at 5:30pm!!

A totally amazing experience from start to finish. Highly recommended. Interactions between staff alone was worth price of admission and i think Thursdays are free entry to general exhibitions!!!!!

The new addition to the MFAH is extraordinary. The space, the art, the complexity, the design, and even better it is located in the heart of Houston. Featuring artists like Rothko and Picasso and visual experiences by James Turrell this place is a must see!!
