At first looks the rooms are average compared to other option in the area that are 5 stars, but there we re a few issues leading to an uncomfortable stay.
1) in the 5th floor is a 24 hour gym. We went to bed at 10:30, after a full day of travelling we were nackered. At this time someone also decided to pump some iron, dropping the weights hard to the floor. This kept us up until 11:45. Truely you could hear everything including feeling the thuds through the walls and bed. We were 3 rooms along and it s as clear as being in the gym itself. We called several times about the noise and were told there had been 4 other guest complain also, but it still took them over an hour to do a thing about it.
We said for the money being paid we did not expect to have this happening so we were shifted and given another room away from the gym with 2 coffee vouchers and got to sleep a little after 12:30am. The coffee vouchers were needed the next morning! The first night was not a nice time.
Who the heck puts a 24 hour gym near guest rooms, especially without sound proofing.
2) there is extensive construction boardering most of the hotel itself. Jack hammer, grinders, sledge hammers hitting steel beams, warning whistles from Forman s, pile driving. A full orchestra of heavy construction awaits you each morning from 8:00am till 6:00pm. And when you haven t been able to get rest from the day before, I would have been out of there if we hadn t paid upfront. This is not the place to be for a person to relax with their partner for a bit of a break and escape.
3) the new room we had been shifted to had panels from the wall fall off exposing the internal wall inside, luckily I was able to push these back in hard enough to secure it in place to stop it coming off again.
The rooms we had seen were also very average compared to their competitors we have stayed with in the area, so before all the concerns, I already felt we were not getting value. I would have paid much more to get something more comfy and luxurious for my wife. Everything appear basic.
4) the restraunt main menu had 3-4 choices on the entire menu, we sat down to dine and take in the views, saw the menu, finished our drinks and left, the inroom menu looked nicer and had a far better selection but as we were there for a break we went out and found other options along the waterfront.
5) we prepaid for the accommodation a week in advance but they tried to charge us additional things on check in and tried to charge us for the full stay again on checking out.
For 12 years I ve travelled for work and stayed in more places I care to remember, so when you do travel for a break away with your wife, you just want to relax and have a nice time,
The stay at the Mucure grand definitely did it s best to dampen our time. Though we didn t let it. We were both extremely disappointed in our overall all time there. There was always something from the gym noise and thuds keeping you up, constant construction noise and drilling, panels falling off in the rooms and trying to be charged for the room both at check in and check out for a paid for room.
Mecure boost its a true 5 Star, I ve stayed at 3-4 Star places that I felt offered a nicer stay. I really do.
So for future travels to Auckland City, we will be steering clear of the Mecure and likely any Accor based hotels after that
