This Macy's is way better laid out then the one in the water tower plaza on Michigan Ave in my opinion for example the men's floor is on the second floor versus the 7th floor at water tower Plaza. The Macy's on State Street just has better overall charm and character as well.

Far away from european posh malls. Still an iconic mall in the States which could do with refurbishment and new ideas. It seems to walk in a 80s movie mall...shame we are in 2020
There are two Macy s in downtown Chicago. This larger store has a complete range of products, many discounts, and the waiters are kind and enthusiastic. It s worth visiting
Manipulatively branded to seem popular, overpriced poorly made merchandise for superficial people who don't know any better. Rundown old classic building allowed to crumble by the same stockholder managerial mentality that puts lipstick on its product pigs.
Wow! 8 floors for your shopping pleasure and a great little snack shop to keep you going. Don't miss the "Great Tree". So Especially fun at Christmas despite the crowds.
Ok, first off let me fess up, I have had a love affair with this store my whole life. I mean we're talking 50 + years. I stopped in to check out the One Day Sale yesterday with the hopes of doing a little early Christmas shopping. Before going in, I thought I'd check out the windows and although they were very cute (kudos for all the glitzy/glam outfits saluting the season) the kids themed windows seemed to fall a little short for me. The theme seemed to be lacking something. The displays felt a little flat, didnt have much movement and could use some of that old Macy's magic. This also holds true for the interior decorations throughout the first floor. Dont get me wrong, there are decorations (some lighted greenery and stars on top.of the merchandise displays and hanging star mobiles in two of the three areas that are open to the floors above) that are a bit more sleek and modern than Chicago is used to. Yet I couldn't help but feeling a bit disappointed. They are nice, but I just wasn't wowed. No red carpet down the center aisle (except in handbags), no dramatic decorations hanging from the ceiling. Next to no decorations in cosmetics. It just left me feeling a bit, meh...
Now the good stuff... There are great decorations to be found throughout the rest of the floors. Tasteful groupings of hanging ornaments, snowflake accented whimsical displays etc..., much better than in previous years. The Walnut Room tree is off the chain! If you want wow, this is WOW (see pic).. the area surrounding the restaurant is a Christmas wonderland. Smart move Macy's moving Christmas decor to the 7th floor. Now you may want to wave your wand and do a little something in the food court opposite the Walnut Room as it looks a bit naked, but otherwise LOVELY.
Now the not so hot, what on earth is going on with the condition of the building? I know this store like the back of my hand and I found it difficult to access several of the floors. Elevators are down, several escalators are out of order, certain areas are cordoned off, the women's bathroom in the lower level food court is a hot mess. I heard rumors of a flood. Good Lord. I have never seen things this bad. I know retail is in a slump, but gee whizz. Some directional signage at the down escalators and cordoned off areas would be helpful in telling guests where to go and how to access the floor they want; as well as any merchandise relocations. Several store directories are missing from the areas adjacent to the escalators Send maintenance down to the Food Court womens restroom please to fix the busted stalls, broken hand dryers and to just to spruce the space up. A little patching and paint doesnt cost a lot. Yikes! You're heading into your busiest time of the year.
LOVE THE MERCHANDISE AND THE GRAND LADY OF A BUILDING YOU INHABIT. You've always taken such great care of her. Please do your best to see to it that it continues.
The building is amazing and just full of everything. There's so much that the store merchandise offers. EXCEPT customer service. Coming from an employee at macys at fox valley aurora. The customer service was so horrible. The employees looked like they hated you just for asking them something. I was scared to even ask someone a question. I went because I needed some Sperry's and I needed them shipped to my house. The lady didn't know what to do, or just didn't try at all. I was telling her what to do. She was telling me that I couln't use my macy's money and all her facts about shipping were completely wrong. I had to correct her on the shipping fee when using my coupon. I ended up just telling her that I will just order it online and all she said was, "Yeah you do that." HORRIBLE. Then we went to women's shoes. We were very impressed with the variety shoes. The view was amazing. We wanted to try on some shoes but it seemed like the employees ignored us. At the end, we really liked the store and the layout of all the merchandise and it makes you feel like you're at a high class environment and trustworthy of the merchandise you purchase but to me, its all about the customer service and from what I experience it went downhill. At fox valley we truly do our best and especially customer service. We might not always succed but we definetely try our best to give our customers exactly what they're looking for.
I like this Macy's. It doesn't seem as big as the main one in NYC, but it is decent size. One problem though is the reactivity in updating their showcase items. You see something on a mannequin that you like, but it is no longer available.
This large and old Macy's store stands out for its architecture and elegance. The same variety of this chain. The attention inside very uneven sometimes kind and collaborative sometimes not. What unfavorably contrasts is the neglect of the food area, very dirty bathrooms without maintenance, an escalator not working.
They moved all the Christmas ornaments to a smaller area, too crowded, too hot in there! They did not do a good job at all on the windows, very disappointed, this was a tradition for over 30 years, no more.
Very impressive to visit this 8 story Macy's store, originally Marshall Field's. There is a food court and restaurant on the 7th floor if you get stuck there too long, along with candy shops in the basement!
Nicely decorated and ready for the Holidays. Visited the food court and was surprised by the variety and quality. Only negative is that it serves as a warming shelter for the less fortunate. Had a gentleman start cleaning his foot while I was enjoying my beverage. Needles to say, I moved away quickly!
Had a great experience today at Macy's, State Street. I was cashing out with Theresa, in ladies wear, and she was so nice! I was purchasing something for my mother and myself. I'm from out of town and she was super helpful and very kind. :) she's a perfect example, of the type of person you want caring for customers. Thanks for the excellent experience!
Visited this ex-Marshall Field landmark as a historic Chicago sight rather than shopping this time. Join the free impromtu guided tour at the Cultural Enter tourist help desk and their walk covers this building and you will learn more history about it. Definitely a place to get the classic shopping experience and enjoy it before we only know Amazon!
I love this Macy's. Their customer service is great, especially their returns desk on the first floor. You can get just about anything from clothes to homegoods. There's also the Walnut Room to eat at as well as several Starbucks. I highly recommend going during the flower show. This year's fairytale theme was lovely.
We enjoyed the 2016 Christmas window displays. I wish the people banging on the plastic buckets would move away from the area to allow people to enjoy the displays. I love visiting this Macy's at Christmas. They have everything and good deals on Christmas Eve.
The Tiffany dome ceiling is still there. And the Walnut Room still serves breakfast under the tree. But, we all know this place is a shell of it's former self when it was operating at Marshall Field's.
Sure, they can bribe us with Frango Mints. But we know the difference. Each holiday season, my family holds our noses and goes to enjoy a meal in the Walnut Room. It isn't perfect, but they've kept some of the traditions alive. But why isn't there more Uncle Mistletoe?
And...quit recycling the 'window' scenes from your New York location. We might be the Second City, but we know when we're getting someone else's leftovers.
This place will always hold a special place in my heart - I have been going here since the days of Marshal Fields, especially for the Christmas season. Eating in the Wallnut room, seeing Santa (and the one here IS the real Santa), shopping with the family, and getting some Frango candy are things I hope I am still doing in years to come. The holiday windows have gone down in quality since the takeover, but I never liked being out in the cold anyway. I really do love this store for the environment. As for clothing, it's like any other Macy's, both in quality and cost. It is the memories that make this place special.
It's just not the same since Marshall Fields closed. It's fine if you're under 25 or don't have a fond memory of what was there before. Customer service ain't what it used to be.
Located in a historic and beautiful building I enjoy coming and shopping here. They do have a huge selection though it can be a little daunting this year size of the store. Not everything on sale is a good price, but there are many good deals to be had if you search the right places.
Went there to have lunch with my granddaughter. They have a wide to chose from but some are not open on Saturday. We had good Mexican food and she managed to find something for herself in the children's section. Due to time constraint we weren't able to visit their Flower show which is great since I've been to one before.
Why does a department store like "Macy's an Karstadt reminds me of the times of the department stores are over ... A few more years ... then it's over.
Macy's was amazing! The store was decorated beautifully for Christmas. Santa Land on the 5th floor was very well done with beautiful decorations to look at while waiting to see Santa. Santa was very entertaining for the parents and children. He was absolutely amazing with my child and really engaged and entertained her. He took his time and we didn't feel rushed so he could move on to the next family. Very fun and wonderful experience. Thank you so much for the beautiful Christmas memory for my family!
Guess I miss Marshall Fields, which was a class operation. Macy's, to me, is not. I can never find something I want to buy and many of the sales people, if you can find them, seem to work hard at being useless. And the general layout of the State street store (I haven't tried shopping the Michigan Avenue store) is sloppy and generally tacky. Bet the parent company is unhappy because they can't remove the Tiffany dome and sell it.
