Beautiful location, classic building. We were upgraded to suite, which was very nice (full kitchen!) The first suite we visited had a worn-out mattress, but we were immediately moved to a much better one.
The band in the lounge was excellent. We enjoyed walking in the neighborhood- so many good restaurants to choose from. A great place for a getaway or a longer stay.
Charm and character and good service make up for any signs of aging in the building.

The location is perfect.... the views from the dining room as you linger over breakfast coffee or a glass of something as the sun goes down.... will make your heart glad. The old dame is showing her age but she still fills your stay with stately charm and when she is at her best.... manages to shine. The rooms are as you might expect.... but the linens are sparkling white and fresh air and the cool sea breeze through an open window on a summer night is an excellent replacement for the whine of air conditioning.

Nothing pretentious or over the top here... all the sights and wonders are outside of the 4 walls.... within easy walking distance or a short cab ride away. Summer prices are a bit steep for the fading glory of the place but you will fall in love with her all the same. Sylvia may be barely holding back the years, but, from her leafy perch overlooking English Bay she can still steal your heart away.

This restaurant has so much potential but really falls flat. It s a great location, has an ocean view, and sits in a landmark Vancouver building, but the decor is dated, food isn t great, and the service is average. Really needs a revamp.

It was difficult to find a table (we had to seat ourselves) and there was little direction or initial greeting, but afterwards service was very attentive and helpful. Food was delicious as always.

I went here for dinner on New Years Eve with a group of 9 people. They served a fixed menu which the rest of my group loved, but I am a very picky eater and there wasn t much that I liked. We weren t able to order off the regular menu which wasn t surprising given the occasion, but it was disappointing because there were items on the regular menu I would have preferred. But overall, the service was good and the food was high quality. We all had a very enjoyable evening and I would go back.

I've been a fan of the Sylvia since I moved to Vancouver. I will miss itu when I move in a few weeks but excited to be an overnight guest in the future! The views are amazing of English Bay, they serve comfort food at reasonable prices. Service has improved over the last year noticeably since the renovation of the dining spaces. Great spot for a bite or a beverage anytime of year.

We recently attended a 79th birthday for a family friend here. We did not stay at the hotel. Despite prior organization and preparations being made, meals took 2.5 hours to arrive and were served haphazardly amongst the table guests, with some guests' orders forgotten completely! We are experienced travelers in our 40s and regular customers of restaurants in Vancouver. There was no Manager on duty to even address the problem and no real effort at customer service, or attempt to even address the terrible situation. I felt terrible for our friend who's birthday was ruined. It was quite frankly shameful, without an effort from the staff to recover, though the one waitress was trying her best with no support from her colleagues. I would never eat here again.

I stayed at the Sylvia for a week waiting for my brother to get out of the hospital. The location was fantastic! I wanted to put my running shoes on and walk the sea wall and sit on English Bay and take in the view. Even with covid I felt safe dining in the hotel and relaxing in my room. I want to return to the Sylvia when I can enjoy room service and celebrate my brother s recovery.

I took my family to the Sylvia Hotel for Christmas Dinner, and I am sorry to say that we had a good time however that was created by us enjoying each others company not the experience.
The food was only OK and they ran out of the soup on the fixed menu as well as the entree took 40 min to come. Then they ran out of the dessert. What food we did get was extremely small in portion and bland in flavour. Thank god we took our own cranberry and sweet corn relish. Through all of this the waiter was bland and un-engaging, the manager offered us no discount on our bill which was $500.00 and seemed dismissive towards our disappointment. I will book elsewhere next year. Offering just a view is not enough in this town, going forward I will only buy drinks to enjoy the scenery at the Sylvia Hotel. Off to find another Christmas Tradition.

Was with friends. Live music (see Katy's review on this page) was awesome. A guitar player called "Spirit". Awesome music.
Best time ever, and stayed the night.
Can't remember having this much fun, and the Sylvia was the perfect background!
I'll be back!

Sylvia's Restaurant and Lounge is in a heritage building, and has an awesome view of the English Bay.

We like their nacho with all the toppings. It is a large dish, good for two people and goes well with an IPA.

There are lots of options for appetizers, the mains and drinks.

Their burgers are good. We have also tried Salmon in the season. All good.

The service is friendly.

Staff were pleasant, restaurant was good and location was pretty. However, hotel was lacking. I was there for work and booked in for 4 nights by someone else. The internet was terrible as the routers were only on every second floor I was told. Rooms were dated but clean. I had to ask for an ice bucket each day from the front desk since they don't leave them in the rooms and toiletries/coffee etc were not restocked unless completely out. No fridges or microwaves. Walls were so thin I heard snoring and EVERYTHING else each night. Better for a vacation than a work visit.

Cool historical hotel located in a nice almost out of the way location. Easy access to the park, and Denman street has a lot to do for daytime lunch opportunities. The walk to downtown is about 25 minutes, but if you're up for it there's a lot of shops and culture along the way. The rooms were comfy, nothing too fancy, and the in hotel restaurant has nice breakfast options (service was a little slow though).

I mean, it's the Sylvia. Superb service. They have Burrowing Owl by the bottle. Food was incredible and all enjoyed as the sun went down.
Stayed the night in the hotel. Woke up to the beach outside the window. What a lovely experience

Been there about a 100 years. Great place in West End to stay, dine, drink and live music in the lounge. Right across from the famous English Bay with views and watch for the geese crossing. Try it as you definitely not be disappointed!

For the restaurant and bar only - Most romantic spot. Knowledgeable, quick witted staff. Very tolerable of noisy happy customers. Food is yum and drinks menu is extensive and outstanding quality. My personal favourite spot in Vancouver for a quickie drinki

A Vancouver classic, great place to stay, although the rooms are getting pretty long in the threads. I don't quite understand why they don't renovate to clean up a bit. Decent sleep, lots of history and an amazing location. Good price for time and place.

Not greeted while standing for several minutes in front of three to four staff members.

They were obviously distracted by the busy day they were about to have (mother's day) but restaurant was not full yet. More time spent on discussing if patrons were going to leave over an hour later that placing guests or even greeting guests at the door.

Knowing it was going to be mediocre food at best, we decided to leave while hostess went to find menus before seating us.

Went here for a family Thanksgiving dinner, rented the board room. Service was very disjointed and they got multiple bills wrong. The food was only so-so, especially considering the price we paid.

Hotel is old and charming. The location was very central. The staff was very friendly and helpful. My only complaint was that the room was not as warm as I would have liked, and I couldn't quickly figure out how to work the controls. Once it was pointed out to me that there was a space heater in the closet, it was smooth sailing from there.
