I really liked this hotel. I'll be leaving tomorrow and before I forget, I want to say enjoyed my stay here. The location is great, about 10 minutes to Times Square. Penn Station at the corner which is easy transport to all Manhattan, and it's surroundings. Easy transport from and to JFK's airport.
They serviced my room daily. My room was one of the ones that have been remodeled recently. Its was nice, no fridge, coffeemaker or other perks like other hotels but I there are plenty of stores and food stands outside including a pharmacy about a block away. It's also across from Madison Square Garden which also has a food court adjacent to it. The check in was a little busy, like other reviewers had said but it's not that they're inefficient, it's that they are on high demand. Once you're at the desk, it was fast and easy. They had like 5 people at least working at the desks so they're efficient I'm telling you.
Overall, I would definitely stay here again. The biggest perks, clean room, private bathroom and the most important, the great location. Awesome! Thank you Penn Hotel staff.

A mouse ran across my room, so disgusting. I called the front desk and they told me there was nothing they can do for it and they don t have another room. I said I want this fix so someone else doesn t have to go through this and they didn t even respone. I kept asking for the manger and they kept telling me it s late and nothing can be done. DO NOT STAY AT THIS PLACE. This hotel should be shut down. I ve stood at some questionable hotels in my past but never experienced this. This place should be out of business. Do not stay here. Pay an expensive price in nyc, trust me it s worth it.

One of my students who speaks basic English booked a room in this hotel, but found out that she had to cancel her trip because of her job. I tried to get them to refund her money 17 days before the reservation and they refused. This is causing her a huge financial hardship and the manager couldn't care less. Now I see why their ratings are so low. Customer service seems non-existent at this hotel. The hotel with no heart.

I am an elevator reviewer. This is nothing related to the hotel service itself.

As far as the safety on the elevators, Car 3 has a slight issue with cartop inspection controls, but others work perfectly. If I open the doors, even just slightly, the elevator will make an emergency stop which is perfect. One thing though, why are there so many elevators serving the same exact floors? I'm not complaining but I'm just wondering why. I like how the hotel still has some of the original elevator parts, for example, an original elevator call station in the lobby. I will give these elevators a 8/10. They could do better in speed, with so many guests at this hotel even though there are multiple elevators, the elevators are always making an absurd amount of stops. To increase travel capacity, I recommend installing destination dispatch systems on the elevators like the Marriott Marquis in Times Square.

Great location, that is it pretty much. 100 years in January (probably without refurbishment since the opening). But hotel is full and buzzing anyway :) I guess location is very important these days.

We were charged for a no show because my husband may or may not have booked the wrong day, but Maria B. At the front desk was extremely helpful. She refunded our money for the night we were not at the hotel.

This is probably the worse experience Ive had coming to NY. I understand the hotel is Antique However this is unacceptable. No hot water. Brown water as well. The excuse was given to me that its a sewer issue and Common. I lived in Ny and never had this experience before. Smokey rooms when we clearly asked for No Smoking. List goes on...

The location is great, however the rooms are HORRIBLE! The room is dirty, cracks in the ceiling.. the electric outlets are old and can not be up to standard. There is a smell of mold in the room as well as bugs in the lighting in the restroom. I slept fully clothed, with the lights on, took a shower with my own towels and didn't dare get under the sheets.

If you have been to several places in USA, you will feel the guys at reception are not that supportive. For rooms at lower floors the interior is still 100 years old. Location is amazing though !

I didn't actually stay in the hotel. There was a long line to check in, so apparently this hotel is pretty popular probably due to the fact that it's directly across the street from Penn station NYC & the prices are reasonable compared to the hotels in the surrounding area.

Used to be a nicer place. Unfortunately this visit wasn't pleasant. Employees weren't friendly or helpful. The restrooms in the meeting halls had an awful smell and wasn't very clean. We took the elevator from 18th floor to the lobby to find a cleaner restroom, and when we asked the podium security officer for the nearest restroom, he snapped at us and told us to go back upstairs where we came from....lobby bathroom is for overnight guests only.

On the floor we were on, the carpets were dirty so not a happy sight. Our room telephone didn't work and the tub had no plug...I guess it's a water saving feature. Everything else so so. Got enough towels and shampoo though... the shampoo and lotion was paraben-free which is nice... hope it was really so. Lining up for check in is like checking in on an international flight... long lines... but they do have kiosks for this too... just not sure how they work. Stashing your luggage will set you back $5 per... other than that, it's a great location steps away from 34th Street Penn Station and not too far from Times Sq. R cafe where they give you breakfast chits for, has some stale fruit cups... not fun, but I guess if you're willing to pay $10 it could be a hearty breakfast.

DO NOT STAY AT THIS HOTEL!!! There were cigarette burns all in the bedding, heat and air don t work, and it is the dirtiest, most run down hotel in NYC. The pictures they post are a complete sham. We asked to move rooms and got an even worse one. No one should ever put their family in this establishment!!!

The hotel is extremely populated clearly due to the price point of the rooms. The lobby area is constantly crowded and unwelcoming.

The rooms have a large space for luggage surrouding the bed as well as a dresser, desk, and closet. However, the positive aspect of space is outweighed by the uncomfort of the bed and the cheapness of the linens and comforters.

The hallways and overall building structure is very unappealing as it seems to not have been renovated since the 60s or 70s with an overall 20s inspiration.

It s an overall mediocre experience, but you get what you pay for.

The first room they put us in was disgusting and dirty and had a giant roach crawling across the rug and into the bathroom. When we complained they gave us another room which was minimally comfortable with no chairs, no refrigerator, no coffee maker, and a tiny bathroom but at least no roaches and cleaner. The image of the roach never left my mind so it was still hard to sleep worrying it might make it to the 9th floor. Too bad because the location is great but not worth a penny to spend a night with disgusting insects dirt and grime. Don't go there. It is being renovated but I wouldn't take the chance since for some reason they still thought it was okay to send customers to the roach hotel rooms. Ugh!!!

I am usually not a huge critic but this hotel was terrible. The rooms were dated and dirty. The bed and pillow were trash. The wait to check in and check out was much longer than any other hotel I've stayed at. The only plus side was how close it was located to penn station and madison square garden. Either way I would never stay here again.

I stayed here on Aug 3rd night & checked out by around 10am on Aug4th. ( I had dropped the keys in the express checkout box around 10am) All was well and the stay was good! I was apprehensive after reading all the negative reviews however the stay was decent and i was satisfied.
However, the next day I see there is charge on my credit card for $40 from Hotel Pennsylvania: I don t understand this charge.
I have called and mailed the team to explain what is this charge about and revert the charge as soon as possible Nobody has bothered to get back to me yet!!! This is totally unacceptable and i need an explanation.

EDITED: It has not been addressed yet! Plz give me your contact details.

This hotel is very dirty and smelly. The lobby looks decent but the rooms are not what they look like on their website. It is very very dirty. The carpets are old and smelly. It is not save for infants and children. The price on the rooms are too much! The bathroom down stairs is very dirty. The receiption people do not know what they are doing.
Your money worth a better place then this hotel. I was lied to deposit a $100 and when I checked out, they did not want to give my $100. I am giving a star because of them re embossing my $100 depost.
Have a good and godly day.

I am leaving one star for great location and for ONE employee, L. Ramos, who really tried to make my stay bearable. Room 1261 is a jail, filthy walls, filthy carpets, tiny, cramped, no view. And that was what they gave me after I paid for an upgrade.
The room was so dirty that I bought cleaning products and cleaned myself. Nobody seemed to care. I also waited close to 2 hours to be able to check-in the dump.
DO NOT GO THERE.

The bathroom tub drain was peeling and cracked. It was truly disappointing in that aspect. The room was outdated, but I had a stomach bug the entire time I was there, so the toilet worked and the bed too, I didn't notice anything else. I appreciate that they let us check in early.

This place would deserve a rave review if it were a haunted house. I would give zero stars if I could. The location is great but that doesnt matter when your hotel is so terrible you dont even want to go back there after a day of walking around. The "upgraded rooms" they advertise DO NOT INCLUDE all the rooms. The room we got came with an old carpet, a comforter and curtains that looks like they've been there and had not been washed since the hotel opened. Mildew on the shower walls, a cracked shower, and no shower lining. We asked for extra pillows since the ones we had were extremely flat and there were only two of them. Took over an hour and three calls with extremely rude customer service to get them. The room was SO HOT because the air conditioning doesn't work (89 degrees in my room). They offer valet parking for 55 dollars a day. When we asked about getting the car back and the timing, we were not told that it would cost an EXTRA 55 dollars to leave it there for 3 extra hours. Spent 110 dollars on parking. When we went to ask about the parking with the hotel desk and complain about the room (after all these things added up, we couldnt leave without saying anything) the manager said "im sorry but there is nothing we do for that and we do not offer refunds. Im assuming this is because they would have to refund every customer since everyone is probably not content with how the hotel is advertised and what you actually get. I didnt eat the free breakfast because if thats how they keep the rooms that their customers see, I cant imagine what the rooms we cant see look like (like the kitchen). To go beyond this, another lady in line behind us began complaining to the manager as well about her room and a random man (not in line and just sitting on the floor) began recording her and then recording through my friends sheer dress. Keep in mind he is on the floor with his phone below her dress. I of course called him out and the manager did nothing about his inappropriate behavior. I can handle a disgusting room and losing money but knowing a man was allowed to RECORD us on his cell phone behind us, up our dresses, with the managers knowledge in the hotel lobby, and nothing was done is beyond unacceptable. Who knows what that man will do that video and this hotel is okay with that happening. I feel bad that the staff is so desensitized to these situations because it happens all the time. Cant wait to see what the "VP" replies to this review. DONT STAY HERE. Stay at the motel 6 and youll have a cleaner room and better service.

I have never been more dissatisfied or disappointed with a hotel or any other purchase. I am in my room now. My second room. The first one was so offensive to the senses that I could not stay there and was offered one that is marginally less unhealthy looking. It is hot, the AC barely works, the windows only open 4 inches. There are only sheets on the bed, no blankets. The carpet is wrinkling up from the floor. There is no coffee maker. The shower seems to change temperatures erratically. Been here 3 nights, no new towels. This place is disgusting. Wifi is $20 a night. STAY AWAY FROM HERE. HOTEL PENN WILL RUIN YOUR TRIP. There is no early check in even though they say so and luggage storage is $5 a bag in a must basement. Bums in lobby.

My daughter stayed in the hotel for 4 nights on a trip with her school last week. When I asked her what the hotel was like this was the message she sent me :
Well let's just say, it's older than dinosaurs, has doors to other rooms, the bathroom is like the one from psycho. The halls are definitely from the shining. Downstairs is really nice tho.
She described a bathroom that was covered in mould. The window in her room wouldn't close, which helped with the extreme heat in her room, but unfortunately meant that the constant noise of trucks and sirens kept her awake. Her teacher did contact reception to have the window fixed, however nobody came. In the end they attempted to block the gap with towels. Whilst I understand that the hotel is in a fabulous location and priced quite reasonably, I still expect basic hygiene and safety standards to be met. The amazing photos of a gleaming lobby are not a true representation of the hotel.

I will never book with this hotel ever the front desk lady was very rude i have to cancel my hotel stay due to a family death and they still want to charge me 200 dollars because it was not within 14 days they are rude and i do not think anyone should ever book with this hotel . And they old me to get a death certificate and send it to them so they can refund me my money . Most hotels allow you to cancel within 48 hours . I will be getting a hold of the credit card company and a lawyer and making sure other people are not to deal with nasty hotels like this anymore .

DISASTER! This is not a Hotel, it's a Quarantine. The only advantage was the location. Otherwise, you have to wait an hour in a looooooooooong line for check-in. The room has a dirty carpet, a very old washroom, uncomfortable bed, broken AC, busy elevators especially in the morning so we had to take stairs. Breakfast is outside the hotel and it's only (3 items) cup of fruit with croissant and coffee and you should have to wait also in the line for 30 minutes. So, we should eat breakfast elsewhere and pay again. The hotel is not cheap and wasn't worth it. Even motels are way better than this place. I'll never go back again :(

This place needs serious renovation. The hallways are dark, the carpets are filthy, and the walls are beat up. There appears to be rampant water damage. The bathroom in our room was icky, too. I came here because a conference was hosted at the hotel, and I stayed because the conference was only two days long.

very-very long waiting to do check-in. Stayed in the line for two hours unable to move in to my room. After 9pm only one person is working with arriving guests. For a hotel this big and expensive, it is a shame. If you are of an advanced age, you can easily die in the line to check-in.

I reserved and PAID for this hotel a week before my visit. I get there to check in and there was a SUPER LONG LINE - After waiting in line for over TWO hours and finally getting up to the counter - they tell me they oversold the hotel and have no rooms for me! Alone in the City with all other hotels booked, I was offered a slum hotel in Queens - worst experience of my life. Now I am trying to get my money back, and I am on my third attempt! DO NOT STAY HERE! The customer service is TERRIBLE!

Rotten service from front desk. Waited 2 hours to check in at 1 am. Seriously the worst management. Instead of jumping on a terminal to help, walked around and hid in the back shaking his head saying not my problem. Read the reviews and do not make the same mistake I did. I was forced by my company to stay there and I regret every moment. Would've rather slept on the subway had I known how garbage this place was. Please do not consider this place.

Very good location, right infront of Madison Square Garden, located right infront of Penn Station, and a 6-7 minute walk to Times Square. Hotel is a little old (try 100 years), but its affordable and has a great location. Recommend it. Can find cheaper deals of you keep looking.

Great location helpful staff and very accommodating for pets.

Unfortunately that's all I can say in positive. Had the pleasure of staying in an old room. Heat barely worked and was missing a knob. Bathroom was a disaster. Tap ran constantly. Water temperature was hard to set. Tub in rough shape. Arrived late to an unflushed toilet which promptly backed up and overflowed.

If you pay extra to get a modern room I bet your stay would be better. Shouldn't have to pay extra for that though.

Place is a genuine Big Apple flea bag. Peeling paint, long waits to check-in and check-out, up charges for everything, $20 for wifi, lousy pillows, no coffee maker in room, strong smell of marijuana in the hallway. The frosting on the cake was when we came in at approximately 10:15 p.m. there was a note in the elevator telling us we would have no air conditioning or hot water from Midnight until 8 a.m. on a very warm weekend.
The only reason I give it two stars is because it's a really good location and the bed was okay.

The Hotel Pennsylvania have a great location and great personal, sadly is one of the worst hotel in the neighborhood, the rooms the hallway the beds are awful, not mention when they offer free breakfast is the worst,
We stayed for two nights was a nightmare, many guests was talking about the bad look inside the hotel, the corporate office apparently don't want to invest capital to renovate room.
Conclusion of this I will not recommend these hotel to nobody, for the money I paid I rather to stay in another hotel and receive better quality...

I will give it an additional star for its location...

I will give it an additional star for its location, otherwise, we had a one-star experience for a weekend stay: a tiny room held together by spackle with an 80s vintage television and not one comfortable chair to sit in. The cigarette burns in the bedspread were a classic NYC touch. That said, this appears to be a drastic range of room quality, that might account for the range in review scores. Friends arrived a day later, only to be told their was no reservation on file for them -- they had ordered our room as well. At first they were told there were no rooms, period. It was already 10:30 pm so before leaving they went back to the desk, and this time they were given a room, which was much nicer than our room. So my guess is that you really get what you pay for here, i.e., they must keep the fleebag rooms like ours for bargain online sites and hold out better rooms for others.

I reserved a room with a king size bed (more like a queen though) hours before checking in, for a Saturday night, for just south of $60. Is the Hotel Pennsylvania comparable to the Marriott Marquis? Absolutely not. HOWEVER, it appears as if the hotel was recently updated, the staff is friendly enough, and my room more or less appeared clean. I will jump at an opportunity to stay here again at a similar price. People need to write a fair review and keep price versus ammentities in perspective. I did knock off a star because the check-in process is grossly inefficient. There are self check-in machines, but if there is a hiccup in your reservation and will not let you use the machines, expect a long wait.

Worse than a drive by motel. Cleaning and location were ok but everything else was scary. 90 minutes just to check in to a room with sqeeky 20 year old mattresses, delapidated AC unit, filthy windows and 50 year old tub/shower. I would never recommend this hotel. Pictures that are shown are not of the hotel rooms by far! The lobby was the only thing that was appealing. The king bedroom I reserved on 5th floor was smelly and dirty. The mirrors had so much dust and dirt. Tried to crack the window and it was nothing but black mold and dirt. The bed had zero support. Probably as old as the hotel . I was afraid to touch the phone to call the front desk.
Complained about the condition of the room and asked the manager if he has ever inspected the rooms and he said NO and he did say he would move us to another room. Wow!
So the new room on 4th floor, that room was clean and did not smell. The room was right behind the elevators. Left us no choice to go out drink a lot and leave the tv on to help block out the noise. Was not given a king bed but a full. We kept our luggage zipped as we slept fully clothed and a towel in front of the door. I would like to add once we stepped off the elevator there were 3 mice than ran thru the hallway. Funny that there was a housekeeper that stood there at the ither end of the hallway and watched. We got up the next morning at 5am and checked out. I told the gentleman at the front desk this was the worst hotel I ve ever stayed at along with what I ve stated above. He told me the employees have called OSHA, Health Dept., etc. and nothing has been done. Their locker rooms are disgusting and he feels our pain. Avoid Hotel Pennsylvania!

First and foremost Shahid Q. was impeccable in helping me get my rooms squared away. He was prompt and new all the answers. Without a doubt hope I get to see him again on the next trip.

Second this hotel is best described as historical. On their website they have remodel rooms but they open April 2019. But when I say historical they have a lot of old style feel and some of the old style doesn't need to be replaced but refreshed. A lot of paint would go a long way.

Overall you cannot be the location. It's ideal to lots of food and most visited areas or desired areas.

For a hotel with such awesome history, in such a great area (right across from Madison Square Garden, a block from Macy's), what a terrible establishment this is. I was completely fooled by the vast and beautiful lobby, and extremely shocked at how run down the actual rooms are. First of all why were they placing people in rooms on the side of the hotel that is under construction? I know NYC is the city that never sleeps, but to listen to jack hammers, machines, and yelling right outside our room all night? Seriously? I understand that we paid a low fare, but never would I have thought our hotel room would have been as dirty as it was. Our sheets were stained with blood (I'm assuming), the carpet was sticky, the curtain was covered in dirt stains and dust, the windows were too grimy to even see out of, the TV buttons were missing, the TV cabinet door was broken exposing old nails, the bathtub paint was peeling, bathroom mold on the walls, dead bugs all over the bathroom ceiling...just seriously disgusting, we asked the front desk to be placed in a different room, only to be denied, and not offered any compensation.

Most friendly and helpful receptionist ever, so lovely and great first impression of hotel. Couldn't have been more sweet, giving me directions to a function I was attending along with a helpful map, ensuring parking in car park and facilitating an early check in. If nothing else had gone right with hotel this lady ensured I would have left with a good impression. Fortunately everything about the hotel was exceptional, and I don't give praise lightly. It was clean, stylish, roomy with excellent service in both bar where we had lunch and restaurant where we had dinner. Food was beyond good and great value for money and service in both places attentive and efficient. Room itself was well equipped and comfortable. I could go on but suffice it to say I was very pleased with my stay, and although short and sweet this time, I hope to be back for a longer visit in the future.

It was very good room. Excellent location. Excellent value for New York City / Manhattan. Walking distance to Times Square. Directly access the street from Madison Square Garden an Pennsylvania Station.
It was a clean renovated room. The only complaint was that Housekeeping put only one washcloth in the bathroom for a King room.

The worst hotel ever. They overbooked everyone. I waited an hour to do the checking and the room was horrible. A group of people from Spain found a RAT as big as a squirrel in they room. IT IS HORRIBLE.
