What can I say here, this place is intriguing, phenomenal, one of a kind, extravagant, elegant, in the middle of nowhere (or the mountains). The hotel lobby staff and main dining room personnel are very nice and hospitable! The breakfast and dinner in the main dining room is very nice! Breakfast has a buffet with plenty of excellent food options, and a table for someone to make you an omelet or egg however you like it. Dinner was expensive and the food was good. 20% hist pres fund was added to cost of breakfast and dinner without your permission.

Things that are great about this place are great. Despite the rest of this review I actually enjoyed my time. But it does not deliver the level of quality for the price.

First, the historic preservation fee is a ridiculous 6.5% tax for poorly maintaining the estate over the years. I don t mind paying for things like this in the price, but this just screams poor management.

Second, most of the people we have dealt with are very nice. But the number of times we have spoken to the concierge and gotten incorrect information or they did not know is inexcusable. Additionally, sitting in the main dining room and not getting a table touch from a manager is unprofessional. Our service in the main dining room was abysmal and we still had a 20% auto service charge like a cruise ship.

That s what the Greenbrier is, a stationary cruise ship for people who can and do pay full price for the veranda suite. But as beautiful as it is and as much as I m enjoying myself; a cruise staff is more professional and every attempt to nickel and dime you takes away from the ambiance (seriously, they want to charge you if you want Greenbrier toiletries to take home).

Overall a beautiful place for resort style life for a couple of days, the food is delicious, the location is rich in history, slightly run down in places, and gets in its own way. If you can deal with the price, it s worth indulging at least once.

It was a nice visit . However, I have a COMPLAINT. While we were shopping in the basement corridor shops, I had a very unhappy and disturbing experience . I was with my 86 yr old mother and my 92 yr old socialite aunt (Mrs. Frances Murray) along with her good friend, Mrs. Lois (Carol) Slotnick. My aunt was in her wheelchair.
We began to approach the front of a dress shop (women's semi-formal dark dresses are in the window display). The sales associate, who had medium-brown color hair, was dressed in a light brown skirt suit set (or uniform) and wearing high heels. As I saw her, she looked at me and immediately began to laugh at me. She quickly covered her expression as she continued to laugh. As we passed by, heading slowly southward, I turned a little and looked back at the sales lady; she turned away and still was laughing with her hands over her mouth. She is between about 26 to 38 years of age. Oh, here is a picture of one of the dresses in the shop's window display, so that the manager who reads this will know at which shop she works.
This sales associate had burst out laughing as soon as she noticed me walking slowly in the corridor: Obviously, she was laughing because she thought that something about my appearance was funny. It made me feel bad. So, I was soon feeling depressed. Did she think that my hair-style looked weird? Or that I was ugly? Or that my outfit was unattractive? Or that I looked frumpy? I am 59 years old. I look younger than my age because I was wearing modest make-up. Even though I'm only 17 pounds over my ideal weight, I have a double chin. I wore a nice Alfred Dunner pant set, which is very common for ladies over 50. Alfred Dunner is a very good brand of conservative women's clothing. I wasn't wearing any loud colors. My hair was very clean and neat, although it lacked body.
Her behavior is completely unacceptable, especially since she works in a shop at a quite exclusive hotel and resort. What I look like shouldn't matter. She should have professional and pleasant behavior regardless of the what a guest looks like -- no matter the age, weight, dress (as long as it is appropriate), race, skin color, or disability. I once was a young and attractive woman. I once had a nice job as an ANA HALLO TOURS tour coordinator, a subsidiary of the Japanese airline, All Nippon Airways. I was 35 to 43. People age and become not-so-attractive. Please, talk to this sales associate and reprimand her. We had lunch in the Draper's Restaurant just prior to the incident. I believe that the management of The Greenbrier should not allow it's employees to laugh at the guests.

My visit to The Greenbrier was for the bunker tour. It's a little expensive but actually nothing is cheap there. It's not what I expected. Most of the bunker has been repurposed as a data center. They do have some mock-ups how it use to be. It's mostly a history tour. I did enjoy it regardless. Just walking through The Greenbrier itself is an experience. I recommend it if in the area.

Too many stuck up rich people here. A guy came in restaurant with his dog and let the dog sit on the seat and slober his mouth over the table. The service wasn't that great, given they didn't take the health concerns from the dog seriously. Hopefully the WV department of health took off the smirk on their faces. Service fee of 6.5 percent is a huge ripoff and should be illegal given its called a fund. A fund is voluntary. A tax is involuntary. Just call it a tax of you're forcing us to pay another 6.5 percent for items and service. This place got an extra star because the grounds are nice and it's also nice to experience a little bit of history despite being surrounded by snobs.

Historic and quaint. We just went for the day. My wife wanted to gamble but alas, the casino is for hotel guests ONLY. guess I missed this little fact somewhere. I was thinking about getting a room only for the night, but at about $400 I'll pass.

Posh. Very old hotel, made me think of the Overlook in The Shining, but nothing creepy there, just a grand old hotel. Especially liked the pool where waiters would bring you your meals and drinks right to your lounge chair. Room service for breakfast was elegant, a dressed to the nines man brought in and set up a table of our breakfast selections.

Unique, historic resort with excellent service. Prime 44 is an upscale steakhouse with a fantastic wine list and an inventive menu. The staff at the shooting club are friendly and are happy to teach any beginners. Rooms are quirky, but charming.

We were visiting for The Greenbrier Classic PGA tour. The golf course was breathtakingly beautiful. We were also able to do a quick tour of the hotel, which was absolutely stunning both inside and out. The decor was authentic to the era it was built, and the history in the entire place was astounding. Can't wait to go back and someday stay in the hotel.

It's older but has beauty. It's placed in a very scenic location, and has lots of amenities to offer. Whether you want excitement or just want to lounge around and relax. And of course if you feel lucky , you could always head to the casino and look for Lady Luck.

Words can not describe the beauty of The Greenbriar Resort. Everything about the resort is gorgeous. The restaurants are fabulous, the pool is out of this world, the hiking trails are peaceful, the sleeping rooms are comfortable and fit for a queen. The staff and is beyond helpful and very knowledgeable. I plan to try to visit yearly.

Unbelievable!!

Unbelievable!!

This place is amazing, the way they've modernized, but have a balance with the historical aesthetics. You just feel the nostalgia from the moment you pull up and enter the front doors for the first time. Every time I go I get that same rush of a feeling like the first time. This place is a must see whether you're just going for a tour or you're spending the night as a guest, you need to see it for yourself.

Decorating is... Different. Not my taste and that's okay. The lacking maintenance, dust, peeling paint, and overgrown walkways were surprising though. For what they charge and the reputation they desperately want, Jim Justice's Greenbrier isn't the tight operation it needs to be.

The Greenbrier is truly "Almost Heaven!" There are no words to describe the natural beauty and the physical beauty of the Greenbrier Hotel and surrounding property. The food is among the best in the world and the staff makes you feel exceptional. The amenities are numerous, you can do anything you want to do and they are about 1.5 hours from a major ski area. If you haven't visited the Greenbrier...put it on your bucket list. You will be so glad you did.

Table games at the casino play by West Virginia rules not Vegas style . Due to understaffing you are not allowed to play multiple hands of black jack if some random person wants to play. Very annoying. There are better casino options out there.

We had the most magical wonderful weekend celebrating my grandfathers 93rd birthday here! Every staff member was kind and helpful. We got snowed in and they added nights to our stay with a discount! We had great food. The decorations were stunning . Walter from housekeeping was so kind he even helped us shovel out our car . Can t wait to return!!

The tour of the bunker was really neat and the guide, she was great. This place is classy. Don't even pack blue jeans, I felt a little out of place when I first arrived. I do wish the bedrooms didn't have pink flowery wall paper everywhere, but not a big deal. Old old building very cool history. Amazing food, great service. Fun.

Beautiful hollywood regency, shabby chic decor. Interesting history, dorothy draper, bunkers, resort, medicinal properties of water. etc... Lower priced during off season. Food good, service good. Very expensive. High end stores.

The outdoor property will knock your socks off with it's beauty. The infinity pool takes your breath away. The staff is awesome. Lots of history including bunkers from the cold war, and many rooms that appear that someone vomited flowers: SO much big floral wall paper and over the top draperies and paint that doesn't always work. A little restraint can go a long way way. Regardless, the food was not up to par ( amazing famous golf course) for such an historic property. Very expensive so so food.

Beautiful grounds with lots of activities, all of them expensive and isolated from the outside world. Food is very mediocre, and in no way justifies the price as neither do the drinks. Staff is friendly and professional, and seem to be fairly happy working there.

If you have lots of money to spend and just want to shut out the real world for a few days this is a great option.

This is the place you see in movies with your rich grandparents visiting. We went for three days on a business conference. Facility is amazing and service maybe the best I have ever seen. Gorgeous grounds and options to do whatever you want; from croquet to chess to tennis to golf.

The Greenbriar is a special property that delivers such a unique experience. We stayed 7 nights and had a wonderful time wild decor and all! The staff that we interacted with was outstanding, we could not have asked for nicer more welcoming people to deal with. Service wise it may be the best we've ever experienced. Katie who worked our floor during the stay has been at the hotel for over 50 years and was the highlight! She went above and beyond to make sure we were comfortable. As far as the resort goes it has loads and loads of activities, a world class golf course, an awesome pool, a casino, and over 20 restaurants & shops to visit. Our favorite part everyday was tea time at 4.15 which they were still doing 30 years later when my wife last visited as a kid. We've visited a lot of cool resorts over the years this place was something else. I'd highly recommend putting the Greenbriar on your bucket list if you've never been, it's an amazing experience.

It's a once in a lifetime experience, when I'm here I feel like royalty. It's pricey but everyone should go once. Activities for everyone. Sheets on bed not a soft as I thought should be and pillows too thin. I usually bring my pillow from home and wish I had this time. The Deluxe Room only $10 more per night than Supreme, cheapest is traditional. Deluxe so much more room and ammenities

This beautiful GEM of a resort is many things: Scenic, tasteful, classic, charming, opulent, comfortable. I could go on and on.

I have stayed here several times, and I can speak directly to the care and attention given to every detail of your stay.

Dining: The main dining room is a showstopper and I guarantee you will not leave hungry. We typically go with a dining plan that includes breakfast and dinner in the main room. We find this has the highest value and also allows for you to try a variety of tastes and flavors. We also made time to have lunch at "Draper's" one day. We thoroughly enjoyed our sandwiches and ice cream!

Accommodations: I have stayed in both a standard room and the West Virginia suite. Both are fabulous, but I will say that if you have the $$$ for a special occasion, go for a suite! Truly one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in, and our bathroom and room were spotless upon arrival.

Activities: Our favorite activities that we tried were: Golf, Spa, Bunker Tour.
The bunker tour is an absolute must! You will feel like you stepped back in time. I was genuinely shocked that this was sitting under the resort. I actually stayed at the Greenbrier once growing up before the "Bunker" was made public, so it was extra special for me.

If you are a golfer, this is heaven. The care and attention given to the courses are evident. Your clubs will also be treated like royalty!

We also enjoyed the pools, spa, bowling alley, and off-road driving school. My brother and I typically make time for some skeet/trap shooting. The Greenbrier has a rich history that you can feel and sense as you walk through the resort.

This is a wordy review, but this resort is a once in a lifetime must. Would highly recommend. A jewel for West Virginia, and we will be back!
