Amazing resort. Very expensive. Beautiful architecture and grounds. Activities for everyone. All staff super courteous and polite. The dress code is fairly strict at restaurants and the casinos, but I guess you gotta pay to play.

Wow!!! This place is amazing!!! The Bunker Tour is awesome!!! A definite must for any history junkie. The hotel has everything you could ever want. The staff is wonderful and ready to cater to your every need. They have horseback riding, jeep four wheeling, fly fishing, golf, tennis, swimming pools, huge workout buildings, movie theaters, bowling alleys, and shops that sell any and everything that you can imagine. They also have tons of restaurants for different tastes. They also have hiking trails, spa, casino, bicycle and seguay rentals. It is UNBELIEVABLE!!! Oh yeah, and the rooms are amazing as well.

I had won a trip to the Greenbrier Resort in the winter and was thinking it was going to be somewhat boring without golf. Boy was a wrong! My girlfriend and I had a blast there! We were able to go bowling, take a bunker tour, have some great dinner on site at the restaurants and enjoy the Christmas celebrations. We didn't have to leave the resort at all and the drive in from Roanoke was gorgeous. I highly recommend it to anyone. We did their off road jeep excursion and it was a blast, I would go back just to do this!

Had some computer problems the day we checked in that caused us to get the wrong room, but was taken care if eventually. I HIGHLY recommend doing either the UTV or Jeep excursion with Kate's Mountain Outfitters. Rick was an awesome guide and made the trip loads of fun for my wife, daughter and I. Thanks guys!

Like no other hotel resort experience. Everything you can think of is here, in old-money opulence and charm. Spa, movies, bowling, arcades, cold-war nuclear bunker tours, offroading, horses, it's all here, and it's all done in the fanciest classic movie era style. Literally just walking around and looking at all the fancy rooms took a whole afternoon. The golf we played was on the prettiest course I have ever seen. I can't describe it any better than that. All this being said, be aware - stuff is expensive...really quite expensive. By all means, make the trip, but do some research to know what you're getting into! If you want to feel like part of the elite, or feel like you're in a movie with Fred Astaire, you'll be fine here. If you want to preserve your wallet's contents, do your research.

The Greenbrier is a beautiful, historic property. We were here for a meeting and found the food to be excellent and so was the service. The Greenbrier is obviously quite old and some things need to be updated like the bathrooms. When you first come in and see all of the floral wallpaper it is a little overwhelming but after you've been around for a while you start to appreciate it!

Absolutely spectacular. History, beauty, and class. I can't recommend this 240+ year old American treasure enough. Didn't get to take the bunker tour, but ate at Draper's for lunch. My son said it was the best burger he's ever had. It is expensive, so expect to pay for quality when you go.

The Greenbrier.. I have visited many times over the years.. it keeps getting better! The staff is always amazing. The food, the shops, and the atmosphere of the main hotel bring you back to a time when southern luxury and charm made you feel like your in a fairy tale. You owe it to yourself to visit at least one in a lifetime.. oh yes try the golf course and the other outdoor activities.

The Greenbrier is a slice of history wrapped in opulence and dipped in prestige. The rooms are gorgeous and every inch of the place is a reminder of the 230 year legacy of this amazing resort. Its obvious that the staff take great pride in maintaining this part of Amerixan history.

I didn't originally come because of the Fallout 76 experience...but it did make it a trip even more worth remembering. :). During trips to visit my family in WV wed always passed by The Greenbrier and I was curious but had never gone in. This last holiday season we attended a wonderful performance by a brass quintet. I was struck by the decor which could be called "chintzy" trying to pass for elegance until you realize that it is exactly as the original designer wanted it. The ambiance then becomes a charming homage to a time gone by. The Christmas decorations were stunning, and the grounds we're ridiculously expansive. And the hot chocolate they served was to die for.
As to the Fallout 76 experience, yes. It is PRECISELY the same layout of both the hotel and grounds and should be on any Vault Dwellers must see list.

We stayed this past weekend for their American Wine Dinner. Food was top notch, staff was friendly and inviting, drinks at the Carleton were amazing! We will definitely be back for some summertime fun.

The Greenbrier Resort is a jewell of a place for a wonderful upscale experience. The many activities available make every day special. My only comment is the employees in the Golf Shop could be more attentive and friendly to customers.

We didn't stay here. We just walked around the grounds. The flowers were beautiful and the grounds well kept! But the inside of the hotel seemed a bit too gawdy for my taste. There were nice things and expensive shops as you would expect, but the carpet did not match the walls. Each hallway had a different theme and it all seemed to clash. Not my taste but I'm glad I got to experience the outside, which is beautiful.

I remember when I was younger, I saw some sort of documentary about the Greenbrier's bunker on like Discovery Channel or something. Unfortunately, I could never muster up the desire to go to West Virginia for a vacation. Fortunately, I was able to travel to the Greenbrier for a conference, which obviously provided the perfect excuse to go.

Finding the hotel wasn't especially difficult, it is not too far off of Interstate 64. However, I did find driving around the grounds a bit confusing - it is poorly marked (like parking). Speaking of the grounds, the property itself is massive; they are also very neatly kept. I'm sure you could spend days just wondering around the property to try and find where all the activities are. The main building of the hotel looks historical; which is fine because it is historical - it has a very grand feel to it. The interior of the hotel has a very "from the past" feel to it as well: carpet and feature wallpaper in many areas, and in a variety of tacky colors (maybe this was the 50s?).

The room I stayed in was adequate; everything worked, was clean, no surprises. All of the staff that I interacted with were extremely helpful and friendly. I had excellent experiences at all of the hotel's many bars and restaurants that I was able to visit. The bunker tour was interesting, yet somewhat underwhelming as I guess I expected something more grand? I suspect this is because most of it is off-limits thanks to CSX using it for secure data storage. I don't blame the Greenbrier for finding a revenue generating purpose for the bunker other than running small groups of tourists through it.

The one thing that I didn't like about the Greenbrier was the pricing. If I had actually paid for any of my stay myself, I probably would have been significantly more unhappy. Their prices are far beyond what they should be for southeast WV. For example, a $10 purchase will have a mandatory 22% "service charge" and a "historical preservation fee" tacked on. Maybe they are trying to maintain a certain customer base by pricing it beyond what many people can afford? Maybe they are just trying to increase their margins? I certainly don't know the answer to this question; however, I doubt I would return on my own due to this factor. I'd rather save my 22% and historical preservation fee money and fly to a nice resort in the tropics.

In summary, The Greenbrier is a beautiful, historical resort nestled in the mountains of West Virginia. There are lots of things to do and see, the staff is nice and the food is good. If it's something you're interested in, and you don't mind paying a little extra for it, I'd recommend it.

The resort is very beautiful but just a heads up the service at the pool is dreadful. Took over 30 minutes to get water let alone the drink orders we never received. Overall the pool staff is very unorganized and it was made apparent after there was an incident and the whole pool had to be cleared out for cleaning. Room service will likely take over an hour but the food is worth the wait. We partook in the falconry beginner lessons and it was the highlight of our trip. The casino was also a positive experience and it s very well kept. I would suggest all of the restaurants as they are good however make reservations well in advance. The breakfast experience can have a wait up to an hour if you aren t an early bird. The food is fantastic.

we chose the greenbrier because of its close proximity to home and reputation of a 5 star experience. Unfortunately, that was not our experience.

Upon arriving we had split the groups into two cars, which resulted in 4 separate luggage carts all going to the couple s individual rooms. My boyfriend and I checked in first, seemingly smoothly, and were warmly greeted by Darryl who was the nicest employee we encountered on the entire trip. The front desk had lost 2 out of 4 of the luggage carts, they continued to pass the buck making our friends run around from front desk, to valet, to the bellmen and no one could seem to tell us where the bags were and who s responsible for finding them. To the point where one of our guests said to the front desk it s fine I ll find it myself And located the two missing carts approximately 45 minutes later.

After that we all decided to browse around the shops to find some of the items some of our people in our group had forgotten to bring. Our experience at Yarid s was fantastic, those girls are great. Unfortunately our experience at the other shops were not so. We felt very much as if we were an inconvenience to most of the shop attendants. Especially at the swim shop by the pool, where we had to purchase a bathing suit and coverup.

We sat down for lunch at drapers, and while we all had a good meal, our server seemed less than enthused to be serving that day. She even rolled her eyes when we asked to split checks.

We shrugged it off and tried to have a good time anyways & headed to the pool. At the pool we found the bar covered in bees. It was very nerve racking for some of our party who were deathly allergic. We found the bartender to be EXTREMELY slow, We finally got our drinks and headed into the infinity pool to relax.

We were finally starting to enjoy our surroundings when the lifeguards came and told us very discreetly you may want to exit the pool quickly on the other side . There was a code brown if you catch my drift. What I found most concerning about this experience was their concern for discretion as opposed to the serious health risks for the people in the pool. They were very nonchalant about the situation, and I watched multiple guests who weren t aware because there was no announcement to stick their feet in or try to get in only for the lifeguards to slowly walk over and whisper in their ear that they might want to get out. When it comes to public health I do not believe this is the way to handle a scenario such as this. It certainly made us question the policies of the hotel and the judgement of the staff.

While getting ready we ordered robes to the room and they never showed up. Which was just laughable at this point.

The dinner started off well, but we quickly noticed our server seemed annoyed by us. We couldn t understand why. several of our friends had to use the restroom during dinner and the hostess at the front gave them each a super agitated response. We found her to be the most rude.

The bartender at the twin oak bar decided he was over it for the night and just stopped doing his job. There were multiple groups of people asking other bar patrons if they too were having a difficult time getting a drink.

Upon awakening, the charges to all of our rooms were wrong. We all got charged extra valet charges, one room was even charged for valet the day before we even arrived. When the front desk was confronted their response was I ll remove this charge because it s from The 27th, but how do I know that you don t have a car? It was outrageous.

We all decided to review our bills and found multiple fraudulent charges, we were charged more than our receipts at multiple places, and one of our guests was even double charged on her card for her purchases on the room. Upon delivering our concerns to the manager on duty, he offered an upgrade (based on availability) for our next visit.

Obviously we will not be returning.

Amazing views, away from busy cities. Beautifully decorated, well keep, comfortable rooms. Friendly, always ready to help, welcoming, professional service. Every employee greeted us and asked us how we were doing. There was some changes that needed to be made to our reservations and they did everything they could to accommodate us. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation spot.

Mixed feelings about this. Of course it's overpriced... But that aside it's a mixture of Old World grandeur and trailer Park decorating LOL a nice underground Casino for those interested. A ton of History here. Probably worth a visit but you might not feel up to a repeat visit

Good:
The man in the green jacket at dinner (poured the wine; seemed to be the one in charge) was an absolute gentlemen. Fantastic service with a smile from that guy.

I honestly think that the service we received in the main dining room was better than any other place we ve ever dined. We ve been to and continue to go to several resorts around the world (stayed in Bora Bora for 10 days & ate at every top restaurant there last year; a few weeks ago we bounced around resorts in the Middle East, etc.) but this place just got it right.

It's the little things: not carding (that's done when you check in; it's utterly classless to make a guest leave their table to go get ID out of their car or room for a bottle of wine when they're paying hundreds for a meal - looking at you, Gristmill), not asking us if we're "okay" every 3 seconds to the point where it disrupts our meal/conversation but at the same time being VERY attentive (my wife was served a dish that required a spoon without one, no big deal, I simply looked over my shoulder, raised a finger, & BOOM the man in the green jacket was on it. THIS IS HOW THE SERVICE INDUSTRY IS SUPPOSED TO OPERATE! WHY is it so rare?!), the black bartender at the lobby bar was an absolute wizard at making cocktails (he was even creating his own menus for the resort), the concierge & check-in staff were smiling, welcoming, gracious, complimentary, delightfully southern, & convincingly genuine. A few people told us "happy anniversary" & seemed like they meant it (we've been to some places where it's painfully obvious they're forcing every last person you come in contact with to congratulate you / wish you happy birthday / etc.). I could go on.

SO MANY places (including some very close ones) focus so much on things like turnover, tips, & good reviews that they completely forget about the things that produce them in the first place.

Oh, & this is all not to mention the unexpected complimentary upgrade, champagne, & gifts. I was extremely impressed & my wife was on cloud nine. YMMV obviously they can t do this for everyone!

Bad:
They need to lower the prices (I would certainly come more often), but have more "restrictive" policies (what's up with the jeans, shorts, & T-shirts? Please start kicking these people out or escorting them to their rooms. I want to see khakis, bow-ties, evening gowns, tuxedos, resort-quality sundresses, & suits. Not buck teeth, tattoos, sagging pants, tank tops, ill-fitting rags, or fat rolls. If the prices are an attempt to weed this out, it s kinda failed. At least there were no ebonics.). Also, I realize the building is old, but throwing a coat of paint on something doesn't fix the underlying issue(s). Some things need to be straight-up sandblasted & redone. And get rid of the hidden fees / historic tax / mandatory tipping. Just work it into the (overall lower) price!

We appreciated the compliment, but thought it was sad when the lady checking us out said that we looked spiffy & asked where we were going; we could be going anywhere - I was wearing khakis & a bow-tie, my wife a sundress. That should be completely average attire for an upscale resort, but, disappointingly, it wasn't (here).

The indoor pool needs some help the curtains up top are ripped & gross & the whole room REEKS of chlorine. And get the bowling computers back up & running! That s some cool 80 s/90 s vintage technology.

The outdoor pool was pretty nice but needs to be open 24/7, be heated in the off-season, have adjacent hot tubs, & have a swim-up bar.

The biggest disappointment was probably the "springhouse." It s absolutely DISGUSTING. Neglected, full of trash, oil & sludge all in the water. Absolutely abhorrent considering this is supposed to be their core attraction the thing that got them started.

Overall:
This is a solid place & we would love to come back. What they get right they get REALLY right, but there re a few things that obviously need some work. It s still a few steps above most places within driving distance, though, & the history & quaint, southern feel are nice.

My husband and I just returned home from a 5 day/4 night stay and I have to say I feel so let down. There weren't any staff here at the house waiting for us, no valet, no maid service, no wait staff, no bellman. We actually had to park, unload and unpack our own luggage! lol We went to one of the nicer restaurants here in our town to try and let ourselves down easy but nothing and I do mean nothing, compares to the attention to detail and service we received at The Greenbrier. I see some are mentioning the automatic 20% gratuity and the preservation fees that are added to all transactions during a stay and yes that does happen but we felt it was the least we could do as our part in maintaining such a national treasure! The hotel and grounds are immaculate. The food was perfection. The spa/salon treatments were pure luxury and I would honestly live there if they would have me and if I could afford it! The staff were top-notch, friendly and so very attentive. The activities are endless, the afternoon tea was delightful, the golf course (although still being repaired after the flooding) was so much fun. We were there for 5 days and feel we barely scratched the surface of the history the resort holds. We will be returning as often as possible and hopefully to spend time in each season to enjoy everything the hotel has to offer. Definitely a walk back in time and a time we will never forget.

What an experience! This hotel had so much to do and see, I never had any reason to leave during my stay. The history that remains was very interesting and remarkably kept well. The rooms, bathrooms, dining halls, casino, old fashion bars and furniture were all so beautiful. This hotel is definitely one to remember!!

I was born in Beckley but have been out of West Virginia for many years. I have told my family about the great white hotel in the mountains and wanted to take them there. As a little girl my grandparents would take me on day trips to visit. It was something to behold and still is so beautiful.

A true grand dame of a resort representing past times and formality. The golf courses are in excellent shape and the grounds truly beautiful. The food was excellent. But....the cottages are musty, tired, carpet-stained and in desperate need of a refresh. Oh yes...and men need a sports coat in the casino after 7:30pm.

A fabulous resort, with many activitys going on year round. Many of amazing places to eat, from the main dinning room, and prime 44, being the two most dressy places, to the forum, drapers, JJ's, Sam Sneads, and Slamming Sammys. Indoor and outdoor swimming pools, 4 golf courses. A indoor and outdoor tennis facilities. A bowling alley and arcade, plus many other activities and things to see and do.

Okay, I'll admit it, I learned about this hotel from Fallout 76. And here's another admission: we didn't actually stay at the Greenbrier. But the staff was very friendly, even with the knowledge that we were only there to walk around the lobby and check the place out. What an amazing hotel! Quite beautiful and a lot of history. We were not able to tour the decommissioned shelter underneath the hotel, but it's on the bucket list.

Absolutely beautiful resort. Wonderful above and beyond service. You will feel like royalty whilst saying here. Don't forget to "take in the waters" at the spa. (If you are modest skip the naked shower hose down though.. can feel a little strange to be hosed down by a stranger)
