I've had a house here for 15 years...literally one of the best places I have ever been. They now have direct flight from DC and Chicago to Lewisburg (15 minutes from the hotel) and the shuttle from NYC to DC is super easy as a connection. I like this better than Kiawah and Sea Island.

Very Beautiful Place for Travelers & Celebrity's to get away for a 5 Star Luxury Getaway. My Favorite time to Visit as a Local is at Christmas time. It is Gorgeous Inside & out. Decorated w/ Beautiful Themes On every Floor. Highly Recommend Visiting. Shuttle Service Available & Heated Outdoor Heaters outside under waiting patio In front of Greenbrier as u wait for Shuttle Service to Arrive. Love it!!!
Beautiful. A great example of a time gone by when craftsmen took pride in their work and built things to last. Blending modern amenities and old world charms. Wonderful experience.
Excellent facility. The food was wonderful as were the rooms. We had a little mix up with the room & Ally Eppling, the front office manager, not only handled it but gave us a cottage to use for our for our 3 for 2 stay. We'll highly recommend this facility to everyone. The decor was like going back in time with the Draper theme. It was a wonderful anniversary.
My husband and I went there to join our friends that were staying there as a surprise for dinner we are from OH so you know how important these friends are to us. Before you enter you have to have a pass that puts you on the property legally. We had a nice dinner and decided to go to the Casino and we were behind 2 other people that were there with their people staying at the hotel as we were too! It was at that time they told those people and us that we could not enter because we were NOT staying there, we were disappointed but understood. so we sat in the lobby out side of the Casino.....Well here comes the couple that was just turned away and he waved a piece of paper showing me that they were getting in. It was at this time I went back up to the GUARD at the entrance of the Casino and asked him what was going on because I knew they were not staying there. He said that they had a pass and could enter and quite smartly said to me......YOU DON"T and YOU WON'T ENTER....I never felt so discriminated against in my life. So if your planning to have a good night with friends or have your friends meet you there don't plan on going to the CASIO unless ALL parties are booked in THEIR rooms. I plan to NEVER go there again.
The building is beautiful but that's the only nice thing about this joint. My wife and I stayed here the weekend before Turkey day. We were expecting a quiet weekend; however, there was some little league football tournament going on the same weekend. I called the hotel staff around midnight about packs of kids running up and down the hallway so it stopped for 15 min or so then started up again. The next morning at breakfast the young football players were attacking the Buffett, grabbing food with their hands and yelling at one another across the room. Once football practice was over, the players tracked dirt across the marble floor. I spoke to the hotel staff and they said they had a lot of complaints but there was not much they could do.
This is one of those places in the world just meant for someone else. I mean wow it's impressive, but we're not the target audience. I think it's an age and where your from thing. Leave it at that.
Almost a must visit experience. Hotel has a lot of character and an endless list of activities, I would say 2-3 nights is probably the right length of time to experience the facility and explore the restaurants. After dinner casino is fun and fair.
Gorgeous!!! Exquisite!!! The staff was beyond friendly and you can ask anyone for assistance or even about the history and they will be eager to tell you. Wonderful visit!!
Lovely accomodations, beautiful gardens, AWESOME casino, several restaurants to choose from, and nice shops within and on the property of the Greenbrier! Highly recommend!
This was our first time visiting this hotel and it was an amazing experience. We stayed two nights but it would have been better to book three or more nights. The property is beautiful, well landscaped with thousands of flowers blooming. They planted 80,000 tulips this year!!!!! The breakfast buffet had everything you could ask for. The ice cream in the main dining room was simply beyond what words can describe. I got the mint chocolate chip ice cream which had fresh mint, you simly must try it. The bunker tour was cool to see. Our room was warm, the ac worked fine but to ensure our comfort they promptly added a second window ac unit. The afternoon tea time offered ice tea, hot tea and yummy homemade cookies (not sure about coffee never asked). We probably changed our clothes five times a day, so bring enough outfits. We dressed up for the three main meals and changed into dress shorts for activities. There are areas that have an incline so bring sneakers or comfortable shoes to walk around the grounds. There is a dress code for every resturant. The staff were pleasant and the housekeepers are well trained. A memorable experience overall.
Outrageously Expensive and added taxes for everything! Snooty. But the grounds were stunning and wild life in morning and ponds. Finding your location for your room can be difficult. This was an experience.
This is a resort of opulence unparalleled in the USA. If you enjoy being waited on and pampered in an old fashioned southern environment then you'll enjoy yourself here. The food is delicious, expensive and the portion sizes will make you think you're on top chef meaning you'll walk away hungry unless you have the appetite of a toddler. The rooms are wallpapered in a style from the 50s designed by Draper so there's that. There's golfing, tennis, croquet, shuffleboard and indoor AND outdoor swimming pools. A chapel on the grounds holds Sunday services and can be rented for your wedding as well. I rate this 5 stars because of the services although this really isn't my ideal vacation spot. It smells of old money.
Furniture hasn't been updated since 1986. Nickel and dime you for everything. Resort fee includes no amenities. Long lines for all things.$110 for a bad pedicure. Could go on and on. A glimpse of yesteryear when things were considered better when expensive and exclusive.
What a magnificent resort hotel nestled in the rolling hills of West Virginia. The property itself is beautiful, complete with plenty of sitting areas tastefully decorated and with the bold use of colors. In addition to the amazing property and unique amenities, there is also a secret government bunker hidden below the West Virginia wing. Since being uncovered in 1992, the bunker has welcomed visitors to see the disaster hideout for the US congress. I didn't get to stay in the hotel, but would love to return and do so.
Very nice and posh place. A bit too pretentious. Felt like I was on the Titanic. Workers were primarily rude and prices were outrageous. Fully expected all of that though. Nice accomodations, but the style is so outdated.
The Greenbrier speaks for itself really. It's a staple of White Sulphur Springs WV. It's like stepping through a time portal with a Casino for extra fun. We love this old girl and hope she stays around for generations to come!
I enjoyed my weekend away with my husband, but it didn t live up to the stories I d heard from family who have been in the past. Staying there was on my bucket list so now I can say I ve been there and done that. My husband and I don t gamble so we didn t even enter the casino. We enjoyed the Italian restaurant and walking/ hiking on the property. An evening cocktail ordered under the Gone With the Wind chandelier and drunk out on the balcony was lovely however the evening diner in the main dining room feel short of expectations.
One of the most beautiful places I have ever had the opportunity to visit. This resort offers everything and cater to the whole families needs. I'm looking forward to a return visit and stay for a long weekend.
Twenty-six presidents have spent the night in this historic luxury resort in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia, which dates back to 1778. During WWII, the State Department leased the hotel for relocated German, Japanese, and Italian diplomats, and it was later purchased by the U.S. Army and converted to a hospital for the treatment and rehabilitation of soldiers. In the 1950s, the government once again tapped the hotel, this time to build a bunker/bomb shelter in the case of an apocalyptic emergency. Called the Emergency Relocation Center, it was to be occupied by the U.S. Congress in time of war. The shelter was decommissioned in 1992 after exposure by the press, and today, hotel guests and the public alike can tour the impressive space carved into the hillside.
Edit: We ended up going for 1 night after the funeral. When I got there I told the front desk what happened. They immediately put in me in touch with their manager who gave us a refund for the Friday night. They ended up going above and beyond to help us out.
Previous post was 1 star. See edit above. I have loved this place. Go just about every year or every other! Supposed to go today for the weekend, but we had a death in our very close circle of friends and a child sick. Called to see if they could do anything and they wouldn't. Only rebook for a different date...not an option for us! No gift card for a stay another time or anything (the rebook dates are within the month). Very unhappy with that...seems like for situations like this they would so something a little different. Changes my feelings for this place for sure.
So many activities for family and individuals alike. The offroad experience is a must-do! Also consider the bunker tour for a very interesting piece of history. Service is always top notch and if it ever isn't they immediately remedy any issuesm. Decor is odd on purpose and is true to Draper's vision so long ago.
We have been going to the Greenbrier since our 25th anniversary, and now we celebrated our 50th there with all of our family who number 23! 11 Grandchildren aging from 4 through 21, and all of them and their parents were kept busy with so many things to do. They enjoyed bowling, croquet, horse riding, swimming, falconry, zip line, off road driving, etc., etc., or just staying in our cottages enjoying each other. The cottages were next to each other, which was extremely awesome, as we do not get a chance to be all together very often. Food, service, and all employees were excellent! Looking forward to when we all do it again! It is the best!
This is amazing you don't ever have to leave this facility if you don't want to. it is gorgeous Sittin on 11000 Acres horseback riding to 2 Olympic swimming pools bowling alley movies everything and the setting is just beautiful look it up on the internet built in the eighteenth century decorated by famous decorator has a banker below ground for the president and his dignitaries now they let you tour it very interesting. Craftsman have rented cottages on the out skirt fine craftsmanship
Location is great, service is great, food is great. Second night my air conditioning quit working which keeps me from giving the venue a five star rating. I would like to return outside of a conference setting in order to enjoy more of the amenities.
Truly a five-star experience we stayed one night and took the bunker tour the next day. The room was perfect generous size very comfortable bed, I loved the bathroom too since there was a deep tub, separate shower, and a separate toilet closet. If you aren't staying the night it's definitely worth a visit anyway just to see the hotel, it's decorated in an1960s chic style plus boutique shopping cafe and several restaurants.
Amazing place !! Beautiful hotel, shops and grounds. Like out of a movie ! BUT, DO NOT WASTE TIME AND MONEY ON BUNKER TOUR. A long boring tour of a basement where NOTHING HAPPENED. Other than that, an awesome, historical, rare hotel.
This was the worst hotel experience we have had in a while. In a nutshell, great ambiance, ammennities and things to do plus beautiful surroundings, but terrible service. It has been 20 years since I have been here and recall a five star resort experience. Not this time. It took 4 hours to get our bags to our room all they had to do was tell us they were behind and we could have taken them up ourselves. After double checking in advance that our two rooms were adjoining we have two children they give us keys to another room which had no bed or bedding. It was a nightmare trying to get housekeeping to bring bedding or a roll out...which it turns out we did not need because the put us in the wrong room. Every time I called the bell captain there was no answer and finally when I did reach him he was incredibly unprofessional thisisthebellmancanyouholdplease And on hold for 10 minutes. Ultimately our luggage was found, four hours later, in a different room. It was a comedy of errors from the bellman, registration, housekeeping-who could not find a rollout bed and repeatedly told us they were busy. Our company is here with our management team we only go to five star hotels because we stress the importance of delivering five star service to our clients but made a mistake in coming here service is stronger at a Holiday.
Most Beautiful place in West Va. Like being on a cruise ship on dry ground. Food is FANTASTIC! The staff is impeccable, they go out of their way to be helpful. The decor is beyond words. It is my new favorite place !
Indulgent and underwhelming. There shouldn't be a waitlist for the pool, though well worth it once you are in. Cabin was nice. Food was good. Waitstaff at Sammy's underwhelming. Beautiful resort. Artist colony was my favorite. Skip the bunker tour. Do the history tour instead.
This is not a casino for public or for anyone can play. This is a private casino for customers stayed in this hotel casino. It is stupid and ridiculous. I drove 2 hrs to this casino to play but I am not allowed to enter the casino, because I don't book this hotel. You people dont come to this casino play if you dont stay here ok.
Next time I want to take the tour of the old secret underground government facility. This hotel is a hidden gem of beautifully appointed rooms and so much history.
