Great thin-crust pizza. The sauce is perfect and the crust is out of this world; crispy, but not hard. Tried the pepperoni and the fresh tomato. They were both amazing. Little bit of a wait to get in but well worth it.

Don t really get the hype? It was just average pizza, as my friend put it if I wasn t so hungry I probably wouldn t be eating this. But we re from NY so who knows
Frankly, I was unimpressed after all the local ballyhoo over New Haven Pizza. The pizza was too greasy, lacked crispness and flavors were unbalanced (white clam - rubbery mollusks and an Insane amount of garlic drowning everything out) or unspectacular (boring veggie and pepperoni). I've had better Pizza in countless joints in Germany and in all modesty prefer my own based on an Obauer recipe - no Italians even involved. So with all due respect for a long-time mainstay of the community, the hype is lost on me. The local sodas are ghastly as well - artificially flavored dross, who cares if it's been around for 90 years if it's no longer any good.
I was told this place had the best pizza in the world. The pizza was fine but it wasn't that great. Prices were decent and the atmosphere was fine. Parking wasn't great.
So after being turned off down the street at Sally's pizzeria bu their 2 hour wait time for a medium pizza we decided to call Frank's since we really wanted to try the pizza with all the hype. We called the restaurant and placed an order where they took my name and gave us a wait time of 20 mintues. We sat in our car and waited patiently. Then we went to the restaurant to retrieve our order where they proceeded to tell us they didn't have an order under my name or anything close to it and that the wait was now 30 minutes. Thank you so much for the world class service at what ssupposed to be one of the countries top rated pizza places. I guess I'll never know. Once I get turned away i dont turn back.
I was in town for work and decided to drop by at the recommendation of some co-workers who were locals and all I can say is they were right. This place was absolutely amazing. First off this is the original location and there is another building right out front which had a huge line so we went here instead. After a brief wait, we were seated and I can say the place is small but quaint. The pizza was absolutely amazing! It had a great flavor and you could tell from it being cooked in that coal over. The crust was light and flaky and simply wonderful. The pizza just had a great smoky flavor you can't beat. The service was incredibly friendly and wonderful from start to finish. If you want great pizza, this is the place.
my bucket list goal and did not disappoint. NY still has the best pizza but I will be back to Frank pepe's. No in-service dining but a good size parking lot to alfresco by your car.
Pepe's was recommended by a friend from CT. We made the drive from NY and weren't disappointed. There was a line out the door, as is apparently the norm as discovered in conversation with regular customers waiting in line with us. The line went quickly, we were seated within 15-20 minutes (although we were there during non-peak time, around 2:30 pm). We had the sausage, pepperoni and roasted red peppers pizza. The world is full of pizza lovers. A little bit about us: we're right there with our fellow pizza lovers. In fact, on our recent family trip to N.Y., we made it a goal to try at least a slice a day and we happily met and exceeded that slice a day goal. Complicating finding great pizza for us, is the fact that my family loves the pies I've perfected at home over many years of pizza making experimentation. I was initially taught by a friend who's family ran a pizzeria in Italy and I've since taken on a style of my own. So, to say that Pepe's pizza produced pin-dropping silence followed by wide eyed expressions, then verbal exclamations of pizza bliss means much, much more than my inadequate description. It truly was pizza perfection. Perrrfect char on the crisp, yet tender thin but not too thin crust with a beautiful cornicione (the puffy rim/edge around the pizza crust), red peppers roasted to the point of leaving a bit of bite to them-not completely soft. I could go on but will finish by saying that after a week of trying amazing pizza every day in NY, Jersey and even New Haven, CT , Pepe's is our new #1 pizza. We'll be thinking about Pepe's from afar in California until we get the chance to visit again. Pizza love is a very individualized thing, however, I can't imagine anyone not appreciating and thoroughly enjoying Pepe's pizza.
Classic pizza pies - remember, when they say charred crust, they mean it. It isn't for everyone. The pizzas are delicious and huge, and it's historic nature is cool, but to be honest the atmosphere isn't that special. There's often a short wait, especially if you want to dine in the original building. They've put in a sizable parking lot, but it still gets full and you may need to park on street.
Called ahead for my pizza to be ready when I got there but couldn't dine in because you can't call ahead and go in w alot of people to stay apparently.
I made the trip from Rhode Island to New Haven to try the original Frank Pepes pizza location cause I have been to the one in Warwick, Rhode Island and of course Mohegan sun!!! I must say the pizza at the original location is excellent and it's better than the Mohegan Sun location and the Warwick, Rhode Island Frank Pepes locations!!! It was worth the trip trying the original Frank Pepes pizza location in New Haven!!!
Came here with my wife and kids and the wait went fast even though there was a line out the door...once in we order a margarita and the famous white clam pie which both were on point with a nice char to the crust.had the house white wine which was great and our waitress was excellent, will be going back when I am back in town.
Kayla was a fantastic server, super polite, and timely. The Margherita, and Avanti Della Carne were both amazing. Simple, high quality pizzas will definitely have to come back.
Excellent pizza in a cool atmosphere. There are no reservations so there is always a wait, especially on weekends. If your willing to tough the line it's well worth it though.
I was visiting North Haven recently for work, and had planned to drive into NYC one day for some real pizza. Some locals told me not to bother, a quick trip to New Haven for some Frank Pepe pizza was all I needed. I was dubious, NYC is famous for pizza, New Haven is not. I was also flat out wrong. Frank Pepe pizza is amazing, like multiple swear word amazing. I grew up 25 years near Chicago, so I know me some pizza. Even more amazing, they sell some sort of generic pop there called kola, with a K, and it actually compliments the pizza like they were made for each other. Amazing. Those eastern states are small, if you're anywhere near this place, make the drive, get the kola, it'll be worth the trip. Update: May 2019 Still amazing. I've run out of reasons to visit Connecticut, but I'll dream about Frank and his glorious pizza (New Haven location only) until they bury me in dirt. Addio.
Made an account just so I could post this TERRIBLE service, took 40 minutes and they gave me the wrong order. It wasn t even busy at the time. Groups that went in after us were finished before we even got ours. While ours took forever, take out orders were flying out.they should care more about the customers that are actually there more than the take out people. The waitresses were rude and disoriented Pizza was half undercooked half burnt. Sauce tasted like nothing. I had to add chili flakes to get some actual flavor. It came out scorchingto the point a part of my mouth is still burnt. You would think that for taking forty minutes it would have time to cool down. Horrible experience
Great pizza! Always prepare for a wait...although it's terribly situational...sometimes it moves quicker than it seems...unless it's cold.... The staff is prompt, courteous, and knowledgeable. The bathrooms are one person...there is usually a wait when it's busy. Kind of pricey....but it's new Haven just off the Yale campus...sooooo.....
Bottom line...be ready to wait and pay for great pizza. DO NOT BE IN A HURRY!
Pizza was really good being cooked in the brick oven. A few beers on tap with pitchers available is always nice. Service staff were very polite, funny and checked in at good intervals. Medium pizza may have been too big for a normal meal, but tasty enough I made it work.
Traditional Italian thin crust pizza. I had to wait 45 min in line to get in.. worth the wait! Historic pizzaria in Connecticut that you just dont want to miss. Dont give up! Wait in line! :-)
