Considering the line that was outside and the reputation this place has, plus the historical significance and beautifully orchestrated movements of the staff interacting with each other and the 20 foot deep oven, I was expecting the pizza to be, you know, really good. It wasn't. Bought the margarita and white clam pizzas and neither was better than average at best. It was too garlicky (and I love garlic), the blackened crust was dry and partly inedible, and the pizza itself was floppy and watery in parts. Don't see the point unless New Haven doesn't have any better traditional pizza without the line.
Got the white clam pie and the tomato pie with mozzarella from the original New Haven location. I unequivocally give both an enthusiastic thumbs up. You will love it. Next time, I'll get the clam pie again and add sausage to the tomato mozzarella pie.
Great pizza and good service, but the food took a while to get out. All in all a great experience
Some of the best pizza I ve ever had. The white clam pizza is worth the drive alone.
I was a bit underwhelmed. It was good but nothing to write home about
You cannot go wrong here, best ingredients and best pizza in New Haven. Although there's tons of toppings to add on, my favorite is the Original Tomato Pie with Mozzarella. Lines can accrue at peak times but your waiting for some of the best pizza in the country...you can always get your pizza to go!
Review will be deleted soon due to google changing terms of guide program. I have been here 5 times and every time it has been incredible. Old time real pizza. I could write pages about why you need to eat here, but it still wouldn't scratch the surface. You need to eat the pizza to understand. You will not be disappointed!
No matter what you like in Mexican food, they will have it and not as "typical" as your chain restaurants. I think they are a little more authentic. I have also had great service each time I have eaten here.
The legendary pizzeria truly lives up to its reputation. Growing up in Westchester County NY and frequenting NYC, I thought I d experienced great pizza. This takes it to a whole new level of deliciousness and authenticity. Came with my girlfriend and a big appetite after a day at the Mystic Aquarium. We were lucky enough to be seated within a minute of entering (I understand the wait times can be excessive if you don t come at the right time). I ve never tasted such quality ingredients in a pizza. Will make many return pilgrimages in the future.
The fresh tomato pie (only available July-September) is the best pizza I have ever eaten. The shrimp and bacon (aka the kosher express - regrettably, no longer a standard specialty pie) is a close second.
Best pizza ever. Classic simple ingredients. Nothing fancy just good pizza
Best pizza place ever, new haven white clam pie is worth every penny. Have eaten multiple new york pizza joints, South Florida numerous places. This restaurant is the best to date; True little Italia new haven. Thanks again frank pepe, a true CT landmark.
Terrific, terrific, terrific! We called for takeout and our pizza was ready on time, really easy to pick it up. We tried the plain cheese pizza and the white clam pizza...both were outstanding and some of the best pizza I've ever eaten. The pizza sizes are pretty generous, so you won't leave hungry, and may even have leftovers. The staff was very helpful as well. When we picked up, they asked if we needed plates and napkins and we did. They also opened our drinks for us before we left because we didn't have a bottle opener. A great experience, we will be back!
I love the pizza here! The best outside of Italia. It is worth the money!!
Hands down the best pizza I have ever had! We live in the area and go here so often. Love the Margherita pizza, definitely a must have if you go here. It's busy during the night but worth the wait!! Highlight recommend this place!
I love the pizza here! One of the best places in the world, no exaggeration!
We had a pepperoni and sausage pies, both were incredible and our service was fantastic. Exactly what i wanted from a pizza place, good pies, good local soda and beer selection, great service, and a lot of history. Would definitely recommend for anyone visiting New Haven.
Such a family friendly place. my kids really love the tastes and the service provided
This was the best pizza we have ever had the root beer was also amazing. The Caesar dressing was so delicious.
Spinach, mushroom, gorgonzola pizza was a great specialty off the menu, and we chose to add roasted chicken at extra cost, which put it over the top in our opinion.
I have enjoyed Pepe's for 50 years many memories with Family and Friends.
Pizza s good and the service was good. Easy on and easy off location.
I had high hopes and expectations coming to Frank Pepe, which I guess was too high.
I tried the White Clam and the Seasonal Tomato Pie which goes from July to September I believe.
The white clam was good- but the pizza was way too seafoody and smelled too clammy. It smelled like I had an aquarium in my mouth. I wouldn't say it is pizza I can eat multiple slices of & I love pizza!
The seasonal pie was tastier and I was able to eat a couple slices of that.
There are definitely better pizzerias in the area, but if you're like me and heard a lot about Frank Pepe, it's not too bad.
PS- the service is ok
Pizza 5star
Service 5star
Ambience 4star
Overall experience 5star
Best pizza I ever had . Period!! I use to think New York pizza was the best I ve ever had but boy was I wrong lol
Really good. Is anyone surprised? Arrived just before lunch hour and got lucky; as we left, there was a line out the door! Staff were friendly and efficient. Yum.
Beat pizza I ever had. Travelled from Springfield Massachusetts to eat here. Would make the trip again
We came all the way to New Haven from New York just to try this pizza, and it was absolutely worth it! We tried the clam white pizza, the pepperoni, the quatro fromaggi and the artichoke. Loved it! Absolutely recommend!
Best place to have authentic pizza. I think they have a secret to make yummy pizza sauce and wood fired pizza. Authentic taste, friendly and enthusiastic staff. Great place to go with family. Price is just perfect. Plain cheese pizza and thin crust pizza are my favorite here. same review goes to their Danbury branch
The pizza is great. This was my first time trying the original location. I had heard it was superior to the Manchester location but I did not notice any major difference. Great at both. Getting a seat can be troublesome just because of the popularity.
if you're looking for the best pizza in ct. look no further.
All the way from South Carolina and this is hands down the best pizza I've ever had in my life !!! From east coast to west coast best pizza ever !!!!
The Best pizza I have ever had. Be sure to try the clam pizza. The shrimp and bacon was unexpectedly great, order it!
Service and food were great on a very busy evening!!
Wow. Drove an hour for this pizza in the pouring rain and let me say I would do it
again. Great service and killer pies. You can taste the history and the quality. The clam is a must have even if you don't like clams.
Frank Pepes has a good pie, but not near as good as L and B Spumoni gardens in Brooklyn. Pie was big, but not cheap. We ordered to go. Then waited for a table. We got a table, then waited for our pie, and then we were told we could not eat out take out pie at the table. Odd, and silly rule. Money lost and star lost. Ate in a nice park with the less fortunate sleeping nearby.
As good as advertised. Truly delicious pizza. We went with a group just before noon on a Monday and got a seat right away. We tried the clam pizza, summer pizza (tomatoes and garlic), plain, sausage and vegetarian. All of them had great crusts and really hot, fresh and delicious. A great pizza, even for someone that grew up with NY pizza.
Great pizza. Lived up to all the great things I heard
Great location - the tomato pizza was great. White clam a little polarizing.
Nothing to write home about. Pretty basic pizza. Wouldn't even bring it up in conversation
An institution in New Haven, Frank Pepe still serves the authentic Neapolitan pizza that made Frank famous, and there are so many more to chose from. The clam pizza is also wonderful. As so many celebrities and presidents have known... a visit to New Haven is not complete without a stop at Frank Pepe's. Private parties are available in the building behind the parking area.
My go to for pizza whenever I go home to New Haven.
Love this place . Pizza is really good . Clam pie is amazing
Good Friday tradition when I lived up here (Now live in Tampa FL) It's been over two decades since I had an Original Pepe's pizza pie and I wasn't disappointed. Mmmmmmmm delicious as always. Thank you!
I'm headed back for another before I head back home Maybe tonight lol
I don't think I need to leave another review on how good Pepe's pizza is because it's amazing and definitely worth the detour off 95. What I do want to leave a review on is the efficiency of their online ordering and pick up system. Online ordering was easy, they gave you an estimate when the pizza wo
uld be ready, and they WERE ready by the stated time. We were in and out in 3 minutes.
I don't know what is so special about this place. I know places less famous with better pizza.
Heading home from RI and decided to check out the New Haven pizza scene was told this was "the place". Had to wait about 30 food was excellent. But not to show regional bias still prefer Kinchley's in NNJ. :)
I'm a pizza lover, pizza expert, pizza traveler and finally I get to Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana to proof it's or not true the rumor about the taste of this pizza. And the answer is: OMG this is the best pizza in the Universe!!!. The crust is a perfect thin size and crunchy, the dough has a perfect sweet and salty combination and without sauce, cheese or any topping, the crust is absolutely great by itself. But off course, the freshness of the cheese, the toppings are carefully melted to make sure all the flavor will explode in your mouth in each bite. The way they prepare the pizza is hypnotizing, is like a choreography dancing for you between the giant brick oven, the pizza makers and the waiters dodging not to hit each other with the long palette. The service was wonderful, they give you a very special welcome with the most simple way, a big smile, a look in the eyes and a very friendly conversation.
Literally some of the best pizza in America. Long wait but well worth it. Only real complaint I have is a lack of choices in toppings but what they have they do amazing work with.
The original and classic. The wait can be long, but it's part of the charm
Twelve years in New Haven and Pepe's is my fave of the traditional apizzarias.
They uniquely make the pizza with these long sticks. Oven is huge and pizza tastes awesome.
First time I've ever been in Connecticut and have NEVER had a pizza with toppings as tasty, filling, flavorful and copious; especially for a meat lovers!
