Very small airport. I knew this when I landed and the plane had to turnaround on the runway. It got a few nice shops and a restaurant, the drinks are good. The international section is a bit small considering you can't leave the area. I didn't buy my visa ahead of time but I did have money based on other recommendations. I thonk American dollara are preferred over Euros.

Bot the best airport in the world) It is just an old building without good infrastructure and it can be seen easily that no money is invested here. Being the most popular airport for tourists they could do better. By the way, I was leaving in the morning and no shops at all were working. Could not buy a water(( So shame for this airport! Hopefully they will do better in the future
This is one beautiful airport. Thumbs up. However, it is plagued by highly incompetent airline staff and hilariously corrupt police officers. Prepare to figure things out on your own here as they'll barely assist you. A far cry from Dar's airport.
The staff also has a tendency of messing with foreign nationals, particularly Americans (and to some extent, Kenyans). Be careful here, especially with the shady taxi drivers and their rates.
And now to the biggest complaint: This is an international airport, served with ONE ATM which, at the time of this review, is broken. Let that sink in. One ATM ONLY, that is also broken. This one needs to be brought to attention because they'll insist that its' okay and that they can always conveniently arrange transport to Boma Ng'ombe (for TZS 30000) to use the nearest ATM. Shoddy, shoddy work through out.
The rest is okay here. On-time arrivals and departures, fast and friendly immigration services and well maintained facilities.
African international airport, however, passing arrival zone was quite good: getting visa, going through the board and customs were ok. Special check was for right vaccinations - no way without.
Departure zone was also not bad. In principle, in a travel for Tanzanian safari it is something non-visible.
Beautiful place, quiet and attractive. The arrangement of transportation to and fro is well guaranteed. I personally enjoy this airport far more than the Arusha airport!
Although my first two times through this airport were uneventful, my last visit did not meet my expectations. First, as previous reviews mentioned, there is little to no signage. If you are leaving when there is only one flight leaving, there are no problems, if not, you will have to ask around to see which counter was Ethiopian airlines. The funny part is they have the signage, they did not put it in the proper place. Then, I was one of the unlucky ones from a cancelled flight and I had accommodation for two days until KLM could make arrangements on other airlines. Well, as luck would have it, "security" took my last snacks. Then, the crazy lady had the audacity to tell me I could buy more. There is no signage in regards to food as water would be expected. After 2 days waiting on a flight and a non-existent voucher, I let it go.
What an amazing airport! Arrivals and immigration are very quick and easy, with our bags taking no time at all to arrive. We were off the plane and in our taxi within about ten minutes. Departures was fine too - easy immigration, free wifi, lots of shops. Stress free beginning and end to our holiday.
It is one of the worst airports i have ever been to. Staff are very few and you need such a long time at every stop because only one or 2 staff are handling it.one guy at airport door cheking all the passengers documents and the queue is till the parking area. 20 counters for check in but only 2 staff which leads to huge queue again. The security is a joke, they have a smoking room in the departures hall, but no lighters allowed and they dont sell inside !!!!!
Service overall good. Make sure to carry $50 as a non US-American. Cards and other currency are not accepted to pay the visa. Even the local currency Tanzania Shilling they don't accept. It MUST be US-Dollars. If you really don't have it go change it at the office. Or go to ATM get local currency and change it to USD. (No joke, there was a guy who had to do it).
If I could give Negative stars, I would. Inside of KIA ,they offer services to wrap bags with plastic wrap. They don t communicate prices prior to rendering services, and they charge way too much. Don t waste your hard earned money there.
A small airport which handles even dreamliners. Accessable from both Moshi and Arusha situated midway. That awesome view of Mt. Kilimanjaro during landing.. awesome..
Getting through customs can be a long process. It is a 2 step process here. The first one is paying the $50 USD / $100 USD (if you are American) and obtaining papers. The second process is going through security and getting your passport stamped. It was about an hourish process and there was no AC.
It looks like they are building a new airport so hopefully things will be smoother then.
I flew into and out of JRO and had different issues both times. On my way into JRO I was frustrated when the people who check your passport spent a full minute talking to each other rather than help process more customers. It's not usually a big deal, but it's already a "smaller" international airport and two flights had just arrived. On the way out, however, they had recently made improvements....and placed all of their restrooms behind check-in. Who in their right mind thought that was a good idea?! They also had multiple ropes open so people could cut in line when you finally were allowed to check in. Luckily both my flights arrived on time but I am frustrated about the lack of professionalism and attention to detail on an otherwise amazing trip to Tanzania.
I love the Kilimanjaro Airport, it is very calm and well kept. I love the greenish surrounding the airport. I must also admit that it is made better compared to past days. One outstanding thing i love is the shuttles at a very affordable prices that will bring you to either Arusha town or Moshi town
To enter the country of Kilimanjaro I bought a visa to stay there one week , they turned all my suitcase asked me a lot of question , then I was released. After 12 days in Kilimanjaro I took a plane at the airport I went to France , on the More

Abit improvements from my prior experiences.. staff needs to look enthuse / excited at their jobs..and speed at checking in counter. Not sure if its them or the system..
Well maintained airport by Tanzania standards. Small toilets for the number of travelers passing through this airport. Nothing to do if you have long hours layover or arrived few hrs earlier before departure
In 2013 and 2015 we've landed on this charming little airport to start (and end...) our safari. It's a really nice but small airport. Two funny facts: 1) If you ask it with a friendly smile you may smoke outside although there are plenty of signs saying you may not. I was actually smoking when i took this photo! 2) On your flight back. Be aware that cigarette lighters are prohibited in hand luggage. I've travelled around the world but this is the only airport I know where they take the lighters. Tip: take two, they often only find one... :-)
For an airport in the middle of a small city in Tanzania, it's exactly what you'd expect, if not more. There's are several souvenir shops, free wifi and a small bar/restaurant which features cheap beer. While there are fans near the ticket counter, it doesn't get much better, so be prepared to be warm.
Getting in late at night from a domestic flight was a fairly smooth process. Departing yesterday afternoon was less so.The queues were short when we went through but soon increased. There was a young lady on the check in desk next to us whom seemed absolutely delightful - happy and helpful to her customers. She checked through at least 5 people on the same flight as us, plus some chatting pleasantly to them, in the time it took our fellow to check us in to that flight, with no communication save demanding or passports. A stark contrast to the cheerful faces in the tourism industry but fair enough.
This is a small airport so you don't need to be there super early. You are asked to show your ticket and passport before you walk inside the airport. All bags go through a scanner at the entrance of the airport once security let's you inside. The wifi doesn't work very well, but they do have a business lounge that you can access at a cost. The lounge has alcoholic beverages and sodas and little food options. There is limited seating at the gates.
airport lounge waiting for the flight Turkish .... never seen a lounge so sad..office finished old sweets ..frame zero info flight not present to know you have to go down and the questions answer evasively. absent and dormant assistance much more efficient that of Zanzibar
