They do everything that I a humane society is supposed to be doing for the animals. The Haunted Trail and all charity events have been horrible over the last 2 years. Nothing is organized the way it should be and people are NOT happy about it. It's nice that they have college grads picking up some of the slack with new jobs but if they don't have the experience then what is the point? lean on the people that know what they're doing don't just think you know what you're doing right off the bat when you don't. Who doesn't have dog treats to give out for an animal Festival? Who runs out of popcorn or hot cider 4 The Haunted Trail. They reduce the time that they ran the Haunted Trail last year and it rained everyday that it was supposed to be open. How much money can you be making that way. Please please please talk to the people who know what they're doing to plan events like this or I won't be coming anymore and I travel from Ohio to go there.

They won t let you adopt many of the dogs unless you already have a dog which is somewhat upsetting, but if the dogs file says that it s recommended to go to a home with another dog then they won t even consider people who have no pets.... it s a recommendation if they like you, and it s a mandatory requirement if they profile you and decide they don t like you. I once went with my partner and every single puppy (all different breeds) had a sign that they recommend it s forever home already have a dog- myself and multiple other people who wanted to adopt were not allowed and went home. I love their mission; however, I can t support their reasoning if their own staff couldn t explain why they have to stick to the recommendations for dogs to go home to other dogs even as puppies, and even if they are trusting and enjoy humans. The employees were asking around and couldn t give myself and the other people in line (who were all interested in these puppies) a good answer... I don t understand how you can turn away four groups of people all wanting to adopt. The confusing part was that the manager then told the person behind us that if she were willing to make sure the puppy she wanted to adopt was exposed to other dogs (if she either had friends with dogs to hang out with, or took it to a dog park regularly- that she would allow her visitation with the puppy and an opportunity to adopt the dog that the rest of us wanted to see and were not allowed to). My partner and I, as well as the couple before us, were both saying that we felt very profiled... overall, this is an adoption center that often doesn t let people adopt (and without good reason). They either have too strict of rules or not enough (I saw 3 college kids adopt a dog for their frat house... meanwhile we couldn t?). The staff were very rude and condescending in my experience here- one person wouldn t stop talking about their pet bird when all I wanted to do was get information to adopt and they weren t helping us or explaining that they didn t know why their adoption rules existed for some pets... but I m sure other people have positive experiences... I was really shocked to be treated so rudely after putting years of thought into this decision, having more than enough in savings, put in the research, have had dogs in the past, etc just to be turned away because I didn t already have a dog at home... wouldn't you think people might come to adopt because they DONT have a pet?! really unfortunate

I really don't like the Humane Society because when my mom took my dog there to get nurtured they made a mistake. My mom took the cone off and my dog started licking the stitches and there was blood all over my carpet at my mom's apartment.

Several choices and a large variety. However, the animals are not socialized well. The visiting/socialization of the animals is VERY minimal. Unfortunately, this causes more issues for them to overcome in their new "forever homes."

Expensive but worth it. Cats are spayed/ neutered and come with all their shots. Detailed notes taken on each one and very helpful and friendly staff. Looking forward to adopting a cat/kitten.

We participated in the breed matching program and have a wonderful dog to show for it. We were very happy with their friendly services, clean kennels and eagerness to help with our first dog. It was a great experience and I would highly recommend them for anyone looking to adopt.

Wonderful, knowledgable staff with positive attitudes. Helped me find this beautiful little cat I've renamed Lily from Butterscotch, they made sure that she was spayed and said that if there was any issues with that I could bring her there and they would do it free of charge. Had all her paperwork and made sure I was as aware of her background as they where.

I think a lot of the reviews that mention the fact that the shelter unfortunately, occasionally has to put animals down focus on the wrong thing. The shelter saves many more lives. DCHS saved my cat's life. The staff were all incredibly compassionate and understanding. I cannot thank them enough. They truly love animals.

We waited a really long time to meet an animal, to the point we were walking out. Was notified that Mondays are really busy days....would expect more staffing if that is a known fact. Great otherwise.

It took nearly an hour and a half to pick up our cat despite having an appointment and there weren't any other visitors there. Communication between staff and their documentation was awful.

The FIV/FeLV test that we paid for was never completed nor documented that we wanted it. Instead, our cat was microchipped against our wishes, the documentation stating otherwise. I never saw that page of the adoption paperwork, or I wouldn't have signed it without correcting it. I'm not thrilled that our wishes were not listened to and that they were documented incorrectly. I would have been more upset if I was forced to pay for the microchip. Although having a microchip isn't the end of the world, I didn't want one that day. Why couldn't they just respect that.

Overall, the entire adoption process was completely fine except for pick-up day. The staff were nice and fixed our issues we had in the end. Our cat was test for FIV/FeLV before we left and we didn't have to pay for the microchip. Our loving, sweet kitty was 110% worth the wait and hassle!

I'm not sure if I'll ever adopt again from DCHS. I don't get good vibes if they perform procedures without our consent.

Very unkind to me when I had to give my cats up due to financial problems.. I was crying from parting ways with my cats and the woman was very rude and brisk with me. Wouldn't let me say goodbye to my cats at all. Rushed me out of the building like neither me nor my cats mattered. Now I have serious separation anxiety from them because I never had a proper goodbye. Very very unhappy.

Called multiple times about wanting to adopt a dog and they told us that we would first have to come see him and that they would not let anyone take him home on the first day because he has been returned before. They sounded so eager to make sure the dog went to the right home. We told them that we were driving out out to see him and right when we got into the parking lot they tell us that someone came in to see him and adopted him. We drove an hour and a half and they ended up lying to us and sent the dog home with someone that only saw him once which they said they would not do. We called multiple times to assure them we want the dog and they said that was ok. I am not sure why they had to act like they really cared where the dog went to if they just handed him away anyway.

We adopted an adorable dog from here, my kids were so excited. He is perfect, calm and great with my children. However we were told he was 3 and was healthy, come to find out he is not 3 he s at least 8 and not healthy by any means. He had 4 fractured teeth that had became infected and went in treated witch then led to an east infection in his throat. We were devastated. Not to mention we had just paid 400.00 for a dog that was clearly not healthy and turned around and had to spend over 1,000 on medication and surgery. Plus on top of it all our dog had suffered in pain even though they told us their vet cleared him and was no issues. We knew within the first week something was wrong by the way he was acting. We are beyond disappointed in the way this adorable dog was left to sit in pain until he was adopted and taken to a vet. No animal deserves that!

I am heartbroken to report that a friend reported a missing pet to the Dane County Humane Society. She was assured that she would be contacted if any pets came in resembling her lost pet. She called back after a bit just to double check. She was a day late. They euthanized her cat without attempting to find her owner. Please do not take lost pets here! They are clearly not doing their research!!

Very uncommunicative. We rescued a stray and brought it to the humane society just in case it had a previous owner. We indicated at the time that we brought it in that we wanted to adopt and called in weekly for about a month (it was a young cat and put in foster care) regarding adopting it.

Eventually the cat was put up for adoption without anyone contacting us either before or after.

My favorite Humane Society that I have visited!

My favorite Humane Society that I have visited!
Newer building allows them to house many animals, (my guess in the hundreds!). There seems to be a very active volunteer base here, which is great!
Their animals are well cared for. They also do not put down animals due to space or time.
This location also has a large animal facility and a wildlife rehab facility.
They are always taking donations of items. Check their site or FB page for what they are in need of at the moment.

About Dane County Humane Society

Dane County Humane Society: Providing Refuge, Healing and New Beginnings to Animals

Dane County Humane Society is a non-profit organization that provides refuge, healing and new beginnings to over 9,000 companion animals, exotic species, farm animals and injured or orphaned wildlife every year. The organization was founded in 1921 with the mission of promoting the humane treatment of animals through education, advocacy and services.

The Dane County Humane Society operates two shelters in Dane County - one in Madison and another in Sun Prairie. Both shelters provide temporary housing for animals that have been surrendered by their owners or rescued from abusive situations. The staff at both shelters work tirelessly to ensure that each animal receives proper care and attention while they wait for their forever homes.

In addition to providing shelter for animals in need, the Dane County Humane Society also offers a variety of programs designed to promote responsible pet ownership. These programs include spay/neuter services, behavior consultations, obedience training classes and more. By educating pet owners on how to properly care for their pets, the organization hopes to reduce the number of homeless animals in Dane County.

One unique aspect of the Dane County Humane Society is its Wildlife Center. This center provides medical treatment and rehabilitation services for injured or orphaned wildlife such as birds of prey, waterfowl and small mammals like squirrels and rabbits. The center also offers educational programs about wildlife conservation.

The Dane County Humane Society relies heavily on donations from individuals and businesses within the community to fund its operations. In addition to monetary donations, volunteers are always needed at both shelter locations as well as at fundraising events throughout the year.

Overall, the Dane County Humane Society plays an important role in promoting animal welfare within our community. Through its various programs and services it has helped thousands of animals find loving homes while also educating pet owners on how best to care for their furry friends. If you're looking for a way to get involved with animal welfare efforts locally or simply want more information about what this amazing organization does please visit danehumane.org today!
