The place is clean and well organized. However if you plan on adopting a dog and have children under the age of 16 leave them at home or don't tell them you have them because they refused to allow any of their dogs to go to a home with children under the age of 16.

The staff is wonderful and I love that they have an entire cat room where they can play and you get a chance to play/pet/cuddle with your possible new fur baby! I would give 5 stars if there was some way of me getting to pet the dogs..seeing them behind plexiglass gives me a somber feeling and it just breaks my heart. Besides that, adoption fee is extremely reasonable and goes to a great cause!
We got both of these furbabies from the CNY SPCA. I can say I'm so grateful for being able to adopt them. They are both sweet, beautiful creatures who have brightened our lives immensely. I see someone made a comment about it being strange that there are mostly pitbulls up for adoption. It's not strange. It's the result of tons of misinformation about the breed. They've gotten a really bad rap. Generally speaking, pitbulls are super sweet, playful cuddlebugs. My baby is no different. Adopt don't shop! The SPCA is great and I am so thankful for all they do for these helpless creatures who have come into their care.
Everyone was friendly and helpful. The animal handlers knew each dogs habits and explained them fully before i met the dog. My adopted Brandy came right into our home and is part of our family. We just love her. She was well cared for during her stay at SPCA.
It's ok but the staff or volunteers were rude by raising their voice to me for no reason. Their phones are never free. They always gossip behind the desk and plus the Scandal that just went down makes me distrustful of them now
What are the odds after explaining to this organization's coordinator the terrible time we had with Rescued Treasures do the same thing to us? Apparently, the odds are great. They approved an application for a bonded pair that my daughter I wanted to adopt, set up a time and date to come and pick them up. Again, just like with Luving Treasures, the night before the coordinator called to say that the foster mom had an application that was approved for the cats and that another family was coming to pick them up the same day and time we were scheduled.
Seriously, this adoption process needs to be changed. Foster parents need to communicate immediately with the coordinator about every application they receive. Especially the ones that are approved. There should be a separate team approving the applications and calling coordinator who little should then immediately call the foster parents to tell them that the pet has an approved adoption and not to take any more applications.
My daughter (and I) has been heartbroken and devastated twice in a week. Inexcusable. And avoidable.
We adopted Nala today such a energetic pup and so playful she and our other dog daisy get along so good. Thank you for giving us Nala let the adventures begin... we love our family of 4.
Heartbreaking to see the homeless dogs, but life changing when you meet and vibe with the right one. The staff is honest and helpful, they want everyone to find the right companion for them. For dogs, the shelter is about 70-80% pitbulls, which can be an intimidating breed, but my personal experience has always been positive. They really are sweet dogs that crave human companionship. My previous, and current dog, are adorable pittys that love to play and then cuddle once tired.
Recently adopted a cat from them. First clue something was wrong was finding fecal matter in the tail when I brought him home, plus he went diarrhea within the first hour in his new home (I discovered the vet check was falsified). I've spent over $800 in vet bills trying to get this straightened out, and still have to get more tests done. Don't do business with CNY SPCA...use a reputable local rescue group instead!
We adopted our new furbaby, and they were so patient, and nice. Granted we went in on a saturday, an hour before they closed so they were ready to head home ( a little tiny bit pushy, which I understand completely ). But I'm so thankful I was able to rescue my dream cat!
We just got our second dog from them. We are very happy with the way they treat the animals and us. I highly recommend going there and getting an animal. The adoption fees are very reasonable and the animals a very well taken care of.
The staff here is friendly and helpful. The office was very busy and there were people and animals going in many difference directions. The animals and facilities are clean. The staff seems very dedicated to the well-being of the animals. The adoption prices are a little high, but the program will put every dollar to work for the animals.
Went in on a Thursday, found the cutest female pit bull named Roxi, brought her home 2 days later, Vicky was awesome and very helpful , we love Roxi ( since changed her name) very much and couldn t be happier, thank you so much
I spent all day calling and trying to get a hold of someone to schedule my cat's neutering and no one answered! The singular time I got through the woman was so rude and told me "Well they're extremely busy.." blah blah blah. I understand they're busy but they wont be getting my business with an attitude like that. It's ridiculous that no one can spare two seconds to answer the phone there.
We adopted Ghost in March ..he was a cruelty case and we absolutely love him ..he is a fun and very loving dog ..the staff truly love these animals and take very good care of them ..thank you again
Just adopted a cat. The staff at SPCA truly love those animals! I felt like I was adopting their cat! They work very hard to care for animals that have no family, yet! They could always use pet supplies!
I wouldn't recommend adopting a cat from here. They gave me a partially feral, totally unsocialized cat under the guise of "she's just shy." Then, after months of me trying in vain to socialize her and a nasty cat bite later, they wouldn't take her back. Very deceptive practices here. Why rush adoptions if animals are just going to end up back in the system?
I was there because a friend of mine needed to pick up some food for her dog and cats. I was also allowed to have food for my pets as well. I'm going to be honest, because I truly don't know what the protocol is for their Pet Pantry, but I believe that my friend had called ahead of time and was told to come in that day. As I was there, they had asked me about my need for pet food, which I had, because I do live on a fixed income and this had really helped stretch out my budget, by making sure that my pet's nutritional needs were met until my next check. I didn't have any idea that the CNY-SPCA could provide food at no cost for those who are in need. But, it truly was a huge help. *** I recommend that you call them first to see what is available for your pet's needs. As I don't know at this time if it's by appointment only or if there are set days they are able to provide food for your cat and/or dog.
Regardless of the poor reviews given for this place, I can personally attest to the dedication of the MAJORITY of the staff here. Please do not harbor ill feelings that do no one any good towards the ENTIRE organization just because you heard some things in the news, were uncomfortable with the noise level at the shelter (dogs bark...), they wouldn't take your animal, etc.... UNDERSTAND the DIRE situation these people deal with every day. The same way a police officer is desensitized to things and has less patience for other things - the people who work / volunteer at this place deal with the trashiest people on a daily basis, deal with people who have not done the proper amount of research prior to getting an animal, and a general feeling of UTTER DEFEAT every day they show up because they know that every week more animals are going to be put down for a lack of space. If you are unsatisfied with an experience at this place, don't write a review on GOOGLE. Get off your butt and get into the community and DO SOMETHING about it instead of pretending to be justified on an internet post. No poor review on this place indicates a real DANGER, or actual issue - just people voicing their dissatisfaction over trivial things.
They are not here as a standard business is, they are not intending to turn a profit, they are attempting to help AS MANY animals as they possibly can, with the amount of money they receive.
SO if they seem like they are not 100% chipper on the phone, give you a short answer, REMEMBER - THESE PEOPLE DEAL WITH THINGS YOU CANNOT EVEN IMAGINE - And their sole interest (for the most part, yes I read the news...) is in bettering the lives of as many animals as possible.
I read every single poor review on this place - they are all misplaced, misguided, or outright idiots.
And before you compare them to another shelter - do your freaking research on the VOLUME the CNY SPCA handles compared to those other shelters. SMH
My family had a very pleasant experience adopting a guinea pig. We did not visit the cat or dog area. Nancy was awesome, letting my son meet the pig in the play room. She is very observant and had moved our pig to his own cage because he was aggressive toward his siblings--this is appropriate care (we adopted him anyway and now he's a total pushover ) Our pig was healthy and well cared for upon adoption (and still is!)
I think that people at the SPCA have done a wonderful job taking on irresponsible pet owners mistakes. Some of the excuses people have for getting rid of a so called family member is laughable. If you had kids would you move into a place that does not allow children?. Sudden allergic reaction?.. Please they have medications for that. If you can not afford a pet then you should never buy one. Free pets cost just as much for vet care as purchased pets. The same holds true for lost income. Would you really drop off your kids to an orphanage because you lost some income? Before you get a pet think of the expense as well as the fact that these little guys can live for the next 20 years in your home.
This place has changed for the worst. Employees (especially older woman short with short dirty blonde hair) are extremely rude. I went there 2 times looking to adopt a cat and have filled out 2 applications. They do not try to contact you to get your adoption process going. The 2nd time I stopped in with my husband after work they wouldn't let us visit with a cat we were potentially adopting because it was 30 minutes to closing. They should care more about getting those poor animals a permanent home rather than getting out of work on time.
Animals often get adopted sick and the SPCA will pretend they didnt know. They have many cats and dogs. While I was there, I also saw rabbits and guinea pigs I believe. After my visitor and I had got back to the front desk (our first time ever being there), this rotten old woman said, "Can I help YOU people with something?," in a nasty tone. So were responded with no and left.
I went there to look for my missing cat. The girl at the desk seemed stressed. I looked through the cat rooms & showed a picture of my cat to another girl. She took the picture & retur ned it to me -- no news. I later found out that they
had just euthaniz ed 13-17 cats for a possible treatable skin condition. This is a No Kill Animal Shelter?? Was I too late???
Found the human side disoriented and chaotic. Made adoption impossible. I don't advise trying to adopt any animal from them. Seriously bad experience. Should be closed and investigated.
Really hard to adopt a dog there! Every person tells you a different story when you call! Found a dog that I liked after 3 days of trying to get in touch with someone, i finally find out that the dog is not available for adoption and it's on a hold! This was even after I came in and visited the dog! Why not tell me so I don't waste a whole week of trying to adopt this dog!?
The staff was short and the place smelled like urine even after they had sprayed down the animal rooms prior to opening. It did appear that the animals were well taken care of and let out regularly which was nice. Even though we did not find a small dog to be a companion to our Dachshund we will try again sometime soon.
The take in as many animals as possible and take good care of them and you have to go through a adoption process to make sure the animal you choose as a pet are right for the whole family
Thank you for helping me feed my dogs recently with food you donate to me that good people In the community donate to you. Tough times from loss of job. Thankyou. Thankyou. Thankyou.
Their shelter is real clean and the animals look like they are taken care of really good. They are also real organized at the main part of the building
Syracuse SPCA is a large facility with a huge responsibility to save animals of a whole county. The facility is very clean with good supplies and friendly environment for animals and visitors. There is a very nice play area for cats and staff there is wonderful. The manager of the facility is a young, intelligent and very knowledgeable gentleman who does everything possible at his highest professional capacity to save the animal. He is always available to talk to people who need his advice regarding the animal rescue and safety. The facility has the law enforcement lady officer who is also very pleasant and professional. Front desk personnel is polite but they would benefit from better communication with a management in order to solve problems that required individualized professional approach. Syracuse SPCA has a special passion for animals in need!!
The staff is very friendly and helpful, they take good care of the animals! The animals are very welcomed and taken care of! I reccomrec this place to anyone! P.S. if you are looking for a special companion, I sugesss getting a special needs cat/ FIV positive cat,
My first cat i got from them had been in her cage so long she could barely walk or jump after I got her home. The second cat I got from them received a botched spay procedure from their vet which resulted in her stomach getting infected and several hundred dollars in vet bills. Now I've heard they also charge people turning in their pets money??? This place is absolutely a scam and not out to help animals, they're only there to get your money and get donations from unsuspecting fools. Don't give them your money. Don't give them your time. They are truly the worst shelter i have ever been to. The staff is also very unprofessional and rude and will get antagonistic if you try to bring up any of the issues with the facility.
I had an issue with an aggressive dog who bit three people one being my seven year old daughter and they didn't do anything! Worst people to deal with in an emergency
If the spca acts as the dog warden for town of lysander how many times does a dog have to bite someone before the spca gets involved?
I used to donate bags of food-35 lbs or more and they wouldn't even say thank you as I was struggling to bring in the bags. The workers are nice but some of the people at the front desk are flat out rude. The younger woman was helpful but I called prior and an older woman failed to mention I need to bring in paperwork for my current dog to even meet the dog I wanted to adopt. The older woman has an attitude that isnt' helpful.
I adopted a cat from here and one week later was contacted by the true owner requesting him back considering they had STILL been looking for him on things like lost pet pages on fb and such. And it was all the CNY SPCAs fault.
All they had to do was take proper documentation of their calls and read a computer screen properly and this wouldn't have happened. It was a big mistake that costed me time, money and emotional trauma. I know many say adopt, don't shop. But DO NOT adopt here.
It took a little bit but we just got our new puppy from there today. I have to say they really are serious about who they give their animals to. Which is a good thing. They made sure she met us and the family, explained any issues she had to us straight. They made sure to consider our kids and how the dog might interact with them. I know I read alot of angry reviews but my experience was actually one that showed me just how serious they were about making sure they went to a good home. Thank you Vicky and staff .
This has been my only review. A lot of people are saying the staff are unprofessional but you need to understand some of them are volunteers. I have gotten two dogs from their now. They are amazing. We did a meet and greet with my dog and the dog were gonna get. The people their helped us so much. 5 stars.
I went to pick up my new family member after being accepted to be screemed at by a low life person. I had an appointment. I know they were closed by appointment only I had one. This broke my heart I jumped through all there hoops. Please don't go there or donate. They are not nice there. Take it from someone who knows.
I want to thank each and every person who helped me adopt Cinnamon who is now pebbles. Its disgusting how some people left terrible reviews. I was there to look at the animals, wednesday, and again Friday to pick up my kitty. Both times it was clean, they all had blankets, toys, beds, the bowls had water, and food. Its amazing with all the animals there it could be so clean. The women at the front desk were friendly, and very helpful. There were so many visitors both days these women were able to juggle all of us,answer phones, and fill out my adoption paper work with smiles on thier faces. They were also caring, and sympathetic as I told them I lost my cat of 16 yrs,and that having a new kitty who needed me as much as I needed her. Thanks again everyone! !!!
Recently adopted a dog name Frostie chihuahua pincher mix we brought him home and as soon as we walked through the door and put him down he started itching and itching it got so bad we ended up making an emergency phone call and getting him seen the next day by our very. We were told he had a skin infection he has allergies he had to be on special food along with a special shampoo and special wipes. When we called to let them about the situation and let them know not only did we spend 150 for the dog but had to now invest another 300 dollars and had to be brought back in another two weeks to see if he had got better went back two weeks later and spent another 100 dollars made another phone call to them finally they gave us a call back and let them know the vet we took him to said this has been an issue for him it didn t happen over night like we were told by Sara she told us their vet checked him out and he had no problems other then a small ear canal well we let them know that was not the case and so far we have put 650 into the dog unexpectedly and we didn t appreciate not being told about his skin condition to where his fur was falling off it is now weeks later and we are still dealing with the problem switching back and forth between different shampoos to try to get the itching to stop. They also told us he was a emotional support dog and was good around other dogs and children he has went after my other dog multiple times and is very possessive. This is ridiculous and I did not adopt a dog to have to put hundreds in along with having to be stressed about him being around other dogs it is not fair to him either to have to deal with this and if I knew this I probably would have made a different decision I am not happy with the SPCA and they are very unhelpful and really couldn t care less about the dogs or any problems they may have. Wouldn t recommend if you want to have a decent dog without any issues they lie just to get dogs out of there and adopted and get the money I am stressed out and should have been told the things that were wrong so I could have made the choices I am very unhappy and I will post on multiple media outlets until someone knows how wrongly they do things there
I give them less than 1 star! I went to look at this 1 small dog sawyer and got the run around , first they said tomorrow than in 2 days. Than oh he was getting Neutered today this grumpy old woman who I put up with said he had been adopted out. The old chip on her shoulder shrew said she did not have time to call! Don t go to the Syracuse spca, their just give you the run around
I have been a volunteer with CNY SPCA for close to a year now and have nothing but praise for the exemplary job of all the staff and volunteers !! Being a non profit company, of course there is not enough staff to please all of the people all of the time....given the nature of the work we do there, I am amazed by the generosity of the public. Donations and Volunteers are what keep us moving....not to mention so many happy adoptions !!
Being recently retired I did not want to let too much grass grow under my feet, so I quickly volunteered for the horses and bunnies. I am the proud adoptive parent of a beautiful cat "Dorothy" and dog "Delilah". Dorothy has been here for some time and hopefully Delilah's spay will go uneventfully so she can join the family tomorrow. My pets are truly my children and I adore them. CNY SPCA has given me the opportunity to meet so many wonderful children. Forever an optimist, I am confident we will find parents for all of them !!
Lots of animals to be loved. Everyone is working toward the mission of providing love for these animals. Although unable to find a match for my family this visit, we will be back.
Reception isn't pleasant, and if it's 5 minutes before closing.. don't think they'll leave the lights on for you to finish looking for your animal. They won't.
These people so much love and compassion for every animal that comes through the door! I saw clean, well kept facilities. Their screening process for dogs is great and I was totally confident in that the one I brought home would be a good addition to my family. (Needless to say, they have super cute animals!!)
