Some staff were friendly, some were not. I had a heart episode a few months ago; I was a level 5 emergency, but waited about an hour for a room. Really sweet Radiologic Technician took my chest X-Ray and helped me get undressed so I didn't tug on my IV line. Got re-dressed and the nurse who came in was a bit rude, I was trying to pull my sleeve up so she could get to my IV and she yanked the sleeve up, which didn't feel great at all. They gave me a lot of meds but never told me what was going on. I told them I had vascular issues and all my other medical history. I always ask what medications they're using in my lines so I know how I react to them or what to expect. I asked the nurse what she was putting in my line and she told me Phenergan; It rang alarm bells in my head but I'm used to generic names so I paused for a second, she pushed it fast, then told me it was Promethazine, which is caustic to veins and a medication most doctors will refuse to administer IV in a normal patient, much less one with a vascular disease. I told her my arm was burning but she said "That's normal" and left. I've never had my arm hurt for more than a day or two after having an IV like that, but my arm was driving me nuts for a week. My doctor and I almost ordered a CT scan of my arm; I would have done so if I had the funds. I had no idea what was wrong until I dug out my paperwork a couple of days later.
A month later my med bill came in. Before insurance, my 8 hour hospital stay, which included an EKG, X-ray, Fluids, and about 5 meds was 5k. It took their financial aid department 2 months to deny my request, and they immediately threatened collections after the wait. Their payment plans are not flexible at all, and they tried very hard to make me pay it all in full at once.
Not impressed. Usually I know once I'm at the hospital I'm being taken care of and feel more at ease, but not here. Especially with the patient in the next room begging for them to let her go or she was going to pull her own IV out. This is especially disappointing because I am a patient of the HCA network and I really love my doctors in Belton and Lee's Summit. Next time, I'll be driving there.
