Wow. Just wow. Here's the good and the bad. Took my 93 year old mother to the ER for impacted bowel. The ER was full of sick people and we were taken almost immediately to triage because of my mother's frail health & condition. There was one ER nurse who was sloppy and had an attitude. She put in the IV and was rough with my mother's skin which is like tissue paper. At one point I had to ask for something and she sat at her computer ignoring my request. Then she talked to someone. Then she went in and out of another room. Almost taunting me that she would get my request when she got good and ready. I made a comment and she rudely told me that she would be getting my item as soon as she could. Nevertheless, we were soon seen by docs who ordered a CT. That went fairly quickly and the diagnosis was as suspected. The ER doc performed a procedure that made some progress but we were told she should be admitted for further treatment and resolution. Here's where it went downhill. If you are in the ER and they want to put you into the OBSERVATION UNIT, REFUSE if possible. This place is horrid. The rooms are tiny, windowless, the toilets pull out from under a sink, there is no place to put anything if you are staying with your loved one. I slept on a recliner like they did 30 years ago. The hall and the room was dirty. The nurses and techs that I encountered were the worst. Is this where the put the lower performing staff? Someone's HIPPA was violated as I overheard a nurse standing outside my mother's cell who had the loudest voice on the planet, talking details about some guy's condition. On Friday night, at 9:30 pm the hall was so loud with the laughing and talking of the staff with one of the hospital security guards, it sounded like they were having a party. It was unreal. I went out to complain and they asked me if I had my door closed! I was ready to punch someone and they sensed it so quieted down. There was always a cluster of staff in a little corner who stared when I walked by, but I just stared back at them. Asking for something was a nightmare. At the 7 am/pm shift change, the nurse may or may not present herself for a couple of hours and then wouldn't check in at all after that. You're on your own in the OBSERVATION UNIT. After 2 nights in this unit I called down the dogs. I went to the charge nurse on the hall who was just one of the gang and told her to get Administration down there, which she did. I let the lady from Admin. have an earful. I told her that the room nor the floor had been cleaned since we were stuck there. I told her that I'd go over her head if I needed to. Anyway, shortly thereafter, things began to happen. Housekeeping showed up. The GI docs showed up, the surgical team showed up. My concerns were being met and we were moved to a room in 5 tower that seemed like the presidential suite in comparison. I complained to one of the GI docs about our experience in OBSERVATION UNIT and he said "I don't like that hall". Yeah....no kidding. I will say that within 12 hours of my conversation with Admin., my mother's issue had been verified as resolved and we were discharged. I shudder to think that we might still be languishing in that horrible OBSERVATION UNIT if I hadn't spoken up. I don't have any plans to return to Atrium/CMC. We had a week's stay at Novant/Pres in January which was head and shoulders over this one. Next time I'll go back to Novant with no hesitation.
