Today 4/29 @ about 445pm customer service was horrible. The lady at the door was very rude and now they are trying to sell the table paper for $2 a square. They are going down hill. I do not recommend them anymore.

Terrible!! Normally the crabs are wonderful!! Soft shells are excellent...but I am not happy spending $100 for two people & probably would have been better at a fast food place ...I would have went to red lobster if i knew it was going to be like that!!! must have been a different cook ....& normally it's our favorite restaurant!!!! That's why I am expressing my opinion cause would like to see a change the next time we come in ....I hope this helps cause we really love the restaurant...the history & normally the food!!!!!!!!

I didnt like that much at all

Went to dinner for my moms birthday which was my family's first dining experience post-pandemic. Had no issue making a reservation or with being seated. The biggest problem was service. Our server was incompetent and negligent in experience. I noticed that the other servers were doing what appeared to be a great job servicing their patrons, however ours lacked attention to detail and hospitality. He made us feel very unwelcome in the establishment. He also kept suggesting items that were "cheaper" while ordering which made us feel inferior (insinuating we couldn't afford what we intended to order). He did poor job of making menu recommendations. He also did a poor job when taking our orders because once the food finally did come, everything was wrong. He brought us food we didn't order which held up our wait time even longer. We had a reservation at 6pm, but didn't get our food until 7:15-7:25pm and watched how other tables who came after us got their food (and drinks) before us. When the food finally came, he didn't even bring utensils! We had to go inside the restaurant to get them ourselves. We finally had to call for Management when our check was brought to us with items we never ordered. I also overheard our server disrespectfully calling us names while going to the bathroom. Our server did this in the lobby area of the restaurant for others to hear which was extremely unprofessional. It's sad that our server was not immediately reprimanded by the manager who was a witness to this. However, the same manager did apologize on server's behalf, which we slightly appreciated. In conclusion, what was supposed to be a celebratory event, turned into a disastrous evening that left us feeling emotionally drained. I will NEVER patronize any establishment that doesn't properly vet and then train its employees. During these rather difficult times where most Americans are slowly getting back to going out in public, most of our anxieties are already higher than normal, so you would think restaurants would go above and beyond to make most dining experiences a pleasant one, with the goal of retaining future business! Also, our server did not wear his mask properly over his mouth and nose, although the other servers did.

We went yesterday for my wife s birthday. We ve been Capt John s fans for over 10 years and make the long drive from Ashland Va because the food has always been so great. This time however, everything from start to finish went as bad as it could get.
There was a 15 minute wait (we did call ahead), and as busy as they are that s expected. Once we got seated, our waitress who later the manager told us had been there a month, just underperformed in every way possible. We ordered at 545, didn t get any appetizers u til 630 thru 645. The soup had been delayed because according to the waitress they were making a new batch. When it finally arrived an hour later, it was barely like warm. If it had just been made, there s no way it couldn t be at least somewhat warm...
Our entrees didn t start arriving until an hour and a half after we had ordered. Other tables that had been seated after us had already gotten their food, so I don t think it was a matter of the restaurant being slow...the other waitresses were all over it. It looks like our food just sat in back for a fairly long time, because everything she brought out was ice cold. Example was the mashed potatoes that had sat so long, the gravy had cooled and formed a congealed seal over the potatoes.
My wife didn t get any crabs until 7pm (we had been sat at 530, when the waitress brought them, just sat the tray down, with no butter, no mallet...nothing. It took another 20 minutes and begging another waitress to bring us those extras, the waitress had forgotten.
It goes on and on, but suffice to say, we were really disappointed. Capt Johns had always been worth the drive, but this time the horrid service made for a horrid and in some cases uneatable dinner.
We understand she was....new....but after a month you would think she would have gotten at least a basic grasp on how to handle the volume of the restaurant....
I doubt we will make it 11 year and commit to the 1 1/2 hour drive...it just isn t worth the risk...

I've been going there 25 years today was the absolute worst dinner ever serving crab legs still frozen after waiting 15 min for reorder paying $59 all you can eat. Service was terrible & so was the food & there attitudes. I'll will never go there again.

Horrible customer service!!!!!!!! I had a problem with their ATM which they own and operate and it charged me twice and i only received funds once. I took all of my paperwork there to show that what happened and they said it is the banks fault and not theirs. The gentleman who helped me was very rude, arrogant and seriously lacking customer service skills. I will NEVER eat there or use their services again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rude staff. Yelled at us from across the restaraunt not to sit at the table we selected. Served us water in dirty glasses and gave us dirty silverware. Cream of crab soup was so thick it could have stood up on its own. Steamed shrimp was ok but not deveined. We won't be back

Great going to a place that remembers you and your family when you walk in! We showed up at 11 for the breakfast buffet that ends at 12 on Sunday and they made sure that the food was all fresh even that late. Well done Heather! Food is great on Wednesday night buffet as well with wonderful views.

My wife and I visited Capt. John s with my cousin Sue in December and had the AYCE Seafood. I lived on The Island many years and left back in 76 when I joined the service. We come back occasionally to visit family. Eating here makes me feel like I never left. The staff and service was wonderful, the food was perfect and even though it was December and at night, the view was beautiful. Great job of keeping the tradition going, Skip. Can t wait to come back next year.

Yuck

My wife and I have been going there for 40 years. It's a 85 mile round trip but its worth every penny and mile, a little disappointed today found out they don't have the crab leg feast anymore, that my son likes, for me its blue crabs only!

Granted they were unexpectedly slammed with customers - however, they shouldn't advertise a martini as a specialty drink. I ordered straight up but it was room temperature and tasted like a drink of vermouth. I would grade the food quality and presentation as a 3, price was a little high.

Went there week before last it was great. Had Rob as a server. Crabs were on point. Went there on Tuesday. Server acted like he didnt want to be bothered. Crab dip was good, however we got 2 all u can eat, crabs were very small and dried up they came out burnt. Terrible

Have not been to captain johns in a while, but my family and I wanted some fresh seafood.
We waited forever just to order drinks. The cream of crab soup was horrible. Super thick and not much crab meat. Ordered the fish and chips and found out that it's not even fresh fish. How does a seafood restaurant serve frozen fish? The best part of dinner was the crab legs. However they did not make up for the crappy or the frozen box fish.

Some of the best local seafood in the Mid-Atlantic. Local AYCE crabs, ice cold oysters on the half shell, fried or broiled platters, local rockfish, full bar with specialty cocktails and good beer selection. Right on the river. Outdoor seating, if you choose. Good service, ask for Heather!

We decided to drive about 45 minutes and go to Captain John's for some seafood. We got there and you could sit inside or outside. It was a beautiful day, so thought outside would be nice. Unfortunately for us there was no room, so instead we had a nice booth at the window, with a good view of the marina.
We placed our order for crab balls and fish sandwich. Both of which were delicious. Captain John's always has delicious food.
However the wait staff needs some help. Very slow, with drink refills, and condiments for our food. We had to try and flag down the waitress just to get refills so it makes it not worth purchasing a drink you're better off with water. We felt like the waitress thought like she was doing us a favor tending to us. I'm sure if we had given the waitress the tip she deserved, she would have been quite upset.
So with that, I would have given a 5 star rating, but the wait staff brought my rating to 3 stars.

The kitchen was backed up, so the wait time for our food to come out was a little long. My crab cake and fried shrimp were very good. Someone in my party ordered a soft shell crab which was fried too hard. That's the only minus. The server was very friendly and efficient.

Visited a week ago and just recently saw an ad on Instagram and decided to share. Upon entering the restaurant we were greeted by a nice young lady who seemed very pleasant. However, in the middle of our conversation we had a server come up and being yelling at her for sitting them a "bad table". My only question is what exactly is a "bad table"? and why do the servers judge their tables by their looks? Anyways, our server was Rochell. She was AMAZING. Very sweet, attentive and helpful with everything and never let our glasses go empty. I couldn't help but notice there were 2 bar tenders Im assuming sitting behind the bar. A woman who was young and an older gentlemen who sat on his cell phone. VERY unprofessional to be sitting in a dining room on a cell phone while you have customers trying to order drinks and cash keno. Our food came within a reasonable amount of time and it was hot and fresh, my husband got crabs and I got the Island platter with a crab cake and fish. My compliments to the chef and steamer staff. We were also visited by manager who was just checking if everything was okay and she was very nice and we told her we were very pleased. Over all our experience was good I just wish their bar tenders were a little more professional.

I want to start off by saying that The customer service from our waiter Daniel was the absolute best! She was so pleasant and kind. she made sure numerous times that me and my guest were situated and I will come back just for that. I thank you Daniel from the bottom of my heart because it is so hard to find great customer service in this day and age and I beg you to please keep it up! The crab dip and the scallops were great! I will be back.

I am writing this letter in reference to our visit to your establishment on October 12, 2014 we had a group of 20 people to celebrate my father s 76 birthday. I call my reservation in advance so you all could be properly prepared. We had one waiter for twenty people, I am not faulting her she tried to do the best she could under the circumstances the blame goes to management, no complaints for her, but your management staff, really needs some training in customers service, I ask if we could get a booth additional to the table that was set up for us and the Manager act like it was a hard decision for her to make it was 20 of us and may have been 15 other people in the whole restaurant at this time, it was plenty of space available for other people. I am not sure what the total of everyone s bill but I know we spent over $500.00 to receive this kind of services to me is ridiculous. We are a family that get together several times a year and celebrate on special occasions. We have been here before and the food along with the services was excellent but this time you all might have lost a great group of customers. We had people come from as far as Baltimore, Laurel, Maryland, some come from the Northern Neck too far to receive this kind of service we did not appreciated.

Deviled Crab was pretty good, but being treated like they would rather be doing anything else by the staff ruined the experience. They seem to be busy enough that they don't need our patronage. Taking our money elsewhere in the future. Won't be back.
