I have been going to this library for about thirty years and, despite some changes to the premises, the organization remains the same. If distribution were revolutionized, making it free, so that the individual user can access the shelves and have what he needs, many disservices would be avoided. The staff is insufficient and often totally unrelated to librarian work (with the exception of some room attendants). Once upon a time there were the boys of the civil service to lend a hand, now sometimes the (underpaid) ones of the cooperatives are seen. In a while (I guess) we will use the students of the school / work alternation. Only a glimmer of hope can lead one to believe that one day there will be employees who are truly suitable for their role. In addition, in the last few months the bar has suddenly disappeared and, shortly after, the photocopy service has also disappeared. The management immediately proceeded to place automatic vending machines for snacks and drinks, but did not think about doing the same with photocopiers or scanners. In the individual rooms I would recommend avoiding the exhibitors with the latest issues of magazines: you fall into ridicule when you see issues from 2008, or even older ones, because (probably) the periodical has not been purchased by the Library since then. The large room intended for medicine is almost always deserted: whose brilliant idea was it to create it? There remains, as always, a single happy island: the National Center for the Study of the Manuscript, really well managed. Basically it is advisable to go to this Library only when strictly necessary, to consult manuscripts and microfilms reproductions, of course, or when you need a book that is not found elsewhere. Sorry, because it could be a real gem for Italy.

Excellent library: adequate, competent and helpful staff: you can bring your own material if not present in the library.
Internal bar to avoid: rude and rude: maybe they should send them to a therapist if they are not satisfied with their existential experience: unloading their frustrations on customers will not help them .
Another discordant note: for vending machines, since they are used to getting stuck in the delivery of products, the staff, who is on guard, should have the keys to free the product.

The National Central Library of Rome is, together ...

The National Central Library of Rome is, together with the National Central Library of Florence, one of the two Italian national libraries that have the main task of collecting and storing all Italian publications. The library archive houses seven million volumes and 25,000 sixteenth-century books, to which are added incunabula, manuscripts, maps, 50,000 periodicals. The Library was established in Rome in 1876 and the building of the Roman College was chosen as the seat.
In 1975 the library was moved to the new building, built by a group of architects adhering to the Modern Movement, in the Castra Praetoria area, near the University of Sapienza; divided into four sectors, including eleven reading rooms, among other things, it collects numerous rare, valuable or particularly significant works.
The service, open to the public for all those who have reached the age of eighteen, is free and allows consultation and, for some of the material, loan and photo reproduction.

Really beautiful, quiet and well-stocked. The system for checking for books is a little confusing at first but well done! Obviously as in any place there are people who can do their job and others don't. I had to deal with four people there and three of them were very clear and friendly while one who was at the entrance, I don't mean rude but still didn't make me feel at ease, it was my first time there and she was talking as if I already had to know everything that must be done before entering, leaving aside the fact that I had to wait a while for his chat to finish in order to ask for information. More attention to staff!

Indescribable experience. A morning thrown into the wind. Bureaucratic and security procedures, which honestly leave something to be desired, to raise Nazism: compulsory card instead of a simple identity document; you have to use the card for any access and make absurd files to enter the section of the lockers; you cannot introduce your own books and, to make matters worse, the system for requesting authorization does not work (even the staff is rather confused about it). You also have to go around with a transparent purse or worse a freezer bag with your stuff inside and you don't know why (a glance inside the case isn't it?). And last but not least, or rather first, the STAFF. Let's talk about. If people ask for info, it's obviously because it's the first time they come. A minimum of clarity would be appreciated. In addition, it would be appropriate not to vent their frustrations on people who are just looking for a quiet place to study (which is made very difficult). In short, less talk and more seriousness and kindness.

The library has a vast book heritage, but unfortunately I cannot give a positive opinion. The methods of attendance and consultation are extremely limiting, and I am not talking about this period (November 2020) of forced closure (but why are libraries considered non-essential services then? Perhaps because the circulation of knowledge is not welcome to authoritarian regimes. .). In fact, even during the few months of reopening the services available were very limited and very few books were available for consultation, without even the possibility of using the deposit for subsequent days. I am not angry with the individual employees, who are very kind, but with the overall management of the institution. We hope that with the new year something changes, but I doubt it ...

A beautiful library, too bad that the staff is rude, wise, almost almost if you ask for information you look like an extraterrestrial and they even come to laugh at you, slackers and little attentive to requests. During working hours you work, you don't do your own business. Too bad that in a place where there is a lot of culture, the staff is not up to it !!!!

Once upon a time the requested magazine was not available even if in the catalog;
The second time I arrive before opening to take advantage of the time: union assembly;
The third time I arrive at 15.00, so the library will close at 19.00, but the distribution service ends at 14.30.
Service rendered void - only card issuers per entry.

The library is certainly well stocked, there is an enormous variety of texts to borrow or consult. The site is not up to par, but overall it works. Despite this, its great utility in this closing period due to the covid-19 is to be recognized. Helpful staff.
My rating is four stars, because I am sure that it is possible to optimize the services, there are all the credentials to become more efficient and convincing.

You must use qualified personnel, assistants who do not scream, but who set an example that, in a national library, is not spoken out loud. You have to avail yourself of staff who speak Italian, not in Roman dialect, of people who have at least a minimum idea of what it means to be professional.

I find it absolutely absurd the summer closing time, already in force from mid-July: 8.30-13.30 !! Not even the remaining public offices, of course, follow these schedules. But maybe studying and preparing theses or research in Italy is considered a secondary, recreational activity? Shame

A shame! Bad, frustrated and incompetent staff. A staff man is very dubious in his behavior with girls. Absurd rules: you can't bring in books to study, or a bottle of water (even if it is often hotter inside the library than outside), and the safety rules are totally disproportionate: it is easier to visit Pope Francis than to enter the national library. The library closes at 7pm, but one is kicked out at 6.30pm. An appeal to students: does anyone know another library where you can study ????

Since time immemorial, the library has been running a very short time (Monday, Wednesday and Friday only in the morning, Tuesday and Thursday morning and afternoon, Saturday completely closed) and offers only a very limited number of books for consultation, which must however be reserved remotely in advance . There was a time in the summer when discos were open but this library wasn't. You go to a library like this to do research and to work, not to waste time: keeping it open should be a duty and not a luxury. Coronavirus is a problem but there are many other problems, systematically ignored, such as the management of this library which at least in theory should be an Italian excellence.

It is an inexhaustible source of information but even I, as someone who has spoken about it before, I leave it as a last ditch. It is absolutely excellent for studying but it is not possible to bring your own books and photocopies. The workstations are comfortable, but the system of requesting books, with very precise and recently automated schedules, makes you lose a lot of time if you request a book in the archive, therefore, unless the book you are looking for is not found elsewhere, try to avoid to request books that are not direct. However, an experimental request service for books via the Internet has recently started which can be booked and set aside the day before. Of course all the sales activities inside the library (even photocopies only), being exclusive, are very expensive. It is impossible, however, to go under the three stars: despite the humorous restrictions it is a library with adequate spaces, people who work seriously and a truly unique repertoire.

This library has very strict rules concerning the use of external documents and some of the services like the copies of its own documents.
Sometimes those rules seems absurd, you can't carry a bottle of water inside, you must keep it in the locker at the entrance.
BNCR has the biggest choice of documents in Rome but I suggest to use them in the library (because for a scholar or a student not living in Rome it is difficult to loan a book - a certificate of residence is requested to do it ).
I found it relaxing to study there, the staff is kind and friendly, there is a nice courtyard that rarely host cultural events, the cafeteria is good and quite cheap, the corridors sometimes host some interesting exhibition.
It is very important to learn the rules to have a good experience in the library, I have been studying there for months, the first few days I felt nervous because of the strict rules but there are some well equipped lockers at the entrance to keep everything that is forbidden inside safe and research is easy when a lot of informations are available.

The library, although well-stocked, is a disaster....

The library, although well-stocked, is a disaster. If not forced I would never go there. Yes, the building is new and overall well equipped considering its location, and yes, it is certainly full of material that cannot be found elsewhere.
However, there are numerous flaws that make it an unpleasant experience, starting with the parking lot. Hours are counted haphazardly, stealing quarters of an hour here and there: today I found myself without reason to pay an extra hour.
The reception is bad, the library is a riot of angry people who can't wait to lash out on the unfortunate person on duty to let off steam. I do not dwell on the age of the staff, mostly caryatids, who, with the exception of a few, are incompetent and grumpy. In all honesty, you go for the books, but if that involves being treated badly for no reason it's still not worth it.
Turning to the books, despite having called a day before to get all the information and avoid unexpected events, things went differently and it was impossible for me to take the only book that I really needed. The information, if given, is given in a hasty and superficial way. The service is slow, casual, you have to wait an hour to consult a book and two days to collect photocopies. The staff is scarce, what is left to be desired and, as if that were not enough, the operating system is far from clear and simple to use and no one is willing to give explanations.
The two stars are exclusively for books and for the only two well-informed people in there who are at least friendly.
Customer service, this illustrious unknown.

It is a wonderful place! I went there for a week every day for research. It takes a while to become familiar with the many rules for the protection of a truly substantial and precious book heritage. To access, you need to make a card by entering your data yourself on a computer ... without the card you are lost, you also need to access the cloakroom and to exit (!)
You enter the rooms only with a transparent bag where you can put your items including the PC or you have to keep everything in your hand.
From one of the many computers in the library by swiping the card you can make requests to read the texts (up to 3 at the same time), request loans (up to 2 to take away), book a workplace where there are sockets for the PC and luminous LEDs that notify you when your book has been found at the counter. By printing a simple form on site for free, you can photograph the books according to the new legislation with the necessary precautions instead of requiring photocopies!

Another point in favor is the wi-fi, free of course, the possibility to book books from home and also to leave the books in storage day by day in order to find them available the next morning without having to wait for them to be found.

In my opinion, however, an initial tour would be done well in which all the rules and possibilities are explained to the user otherwise you risk spending two or three days to understand the complicated system of finding books, waiting times etc.

For the rest I consider it one of the best libraries in the Rome area.

A praise to the employees of the humanistic room desk (H) who are really kind and available for any request.

The employee at the entrance turnstiles was always rather unfriendly if not rude. A smile every now and then doesn't hurt!

DON'T GO. The staff is the worst. I arrived there by car and a man screamed to me that I had to pay to use the parking lot and used the worst slangs and words - literally NO MANNERS!!! - then when I tried to actually visit the library the staff wasn't very welcome and treated me and my friend very bad (disappointment!). We couldn't check the library since my friend didn't have her passport (since she wasn't Italian) and the staff didn't try to find another solution - they won't help you. Then only after 15 minutes (and no library), the same parking lot man told me that I had to pay 1 no matter what. He said "I don't know where you studied Math but 1 it is"... SO RUDE AND THE WORST EXPERIENCE EVER!!!

Excellent for books and for available space, what I don't like is the strange insistence of preventing visitors from bringing at least their own photocopies, I don't even say books but at least their own photocopies. The state should review the schedules, rudely what they are at the external entrance of the library, one cannot even sit on the stairs while the doors of the library open and is thrown out like thieves, an absurd thing. I have never had any problems with internal staff.

The library has always been characterized by bad services but in fact it has been infrequent or almost six months ago. First total closure for two months "for safety", then opening only for loan, then very limited opening with the possibility of consulting only the books at the counter (and those displayed in the room remain a mirage), in mid-August again total closure for holidays (!), in short, they no longer know what to invent for "safety", or rather, not to work. Enough of these excuses and these virus psychoses, services must be provided and we students have the right to study and prepare! Study and research are fundamental rights of society!

There are tons of things to improve from staff down to access rules. The cultural content is remarkable (even before the apotheosis) but the fact that it can only be consulted without being able to read one's own texts is truly bizarre and typical Italian. Let's not ruin something that is born well and to do good! I also agree with the bottles of water!

Wide choice of texts and free access, excellent fo...

Wide choice of texts and free access, excellent for studying ... but: excessive bureaucracy to be able to access the library (texts brought from home are not admitted and there is ONE copy in the library - if you want to study in two the same text, which is done, is studied together? -) and its services (loan / consultation of the texts, but also reservation of the tables, for which if the reservation was simpler, or if this could be reported from the table itself, complicated passages to PCs and disputes between users would be avoided, encouraged by some of the librarians who thus invite "you have to chase away those who occupied the table"). The employees, some really very polite and courteous, stand out from other rude, some scurrilous even with guests and others who cannot use acceptable tones of voice for a library, especially in the "bibliographic research" classroom, to the point that they are users having to ask librarians to lower their voices. For the guests of the library there are strict rules to be able to make photocopies of the texts (for which, however, authorization is required and the service is offered only in certain time slots), a rule that is not respected by some of the librarians complete with an identification tag that takes photos of the texts with smartphone. If you want to find bathrooms with a minimum of cleaning, we recommend those on the bottom of the structure, the others are to be avoided or those already at the entrance before the entrance turnstiles are already locked. Finally, study stations near the counters are not recommended because the quarrels between guests and librarians are not uncommon due to the loss of the books required for consultation in the dining room or booked from home. Prices of unapproachable parking: better to use public transport or reach it on foot. They have recently added turnstiles also for the entrance to the lockers, creating unnecessary files to enter and exit (when the system works because when there are problems ... help!).

Logistically comfortable, but not suitable for study. No Wi-Fi, rude staff and pedant who continually disturbs speaking aloud. On the other hand, you enter these places by recommendation, you know, and once you have had the place you feel in an iron barrel. Rules absurd as if every customer could be a potential terrorist. Water is not allowed because obviously you have to make the interest of the bar: if you want to go to the bar and pay. It is time to finish putting recommendations that do not have any predisposition for the work that had "luck" (let's call it that) to get. There are so many other people who would have all the credentials for such work, passion, attitude, cordiality, and instead they are systematically put aside. This is not an exclusive problem of this library but also of many others.

After some time this review must have had its effect: the staff seems to have understood that they should not disturb speaking aloud. Now they should try to understand that they do not have to smoke even if they go to the basement because anyway a thread of smoke always goes up to the hall and a non-smoker notices immediately.
A problem that reflects the temperature that obviously the air conditioning system can not make it stable by forcing us to put on and take off a support jacket.

I still add a star at least for having finally granted us the necessary silence.

The national library is a source of many knowledge. For those who want to deepen an academic subject this is the place to start.
There is an online catalog where you can find the materials for the study.
It takes a card, which is easily obtained.

At least in the humanities section I have always found kind and helpful people.

Unfriendly and unprofessional staff. Slowness in distributing books for loan.
Too much buttercracy that makes you lose whole days of study / work.
Not even a bottle of water can be brought inside, as well as photocopies and own books (if present in the library, a copy).
Turnstiles exist for users ONLY, employees use side exits to go to the bar.
The phones in the dining room are ringing constantly, disturbing users who look at themselves in amazement.
Times worthy of the provincial village but not of a National library in the capital!
If I wasn't forced, I would never go!

The library is huge, in the sense that it has a vast material, but it is impossible to study for those who need silence. After changing the reading table several times, I gave up and left. Everyone is chatting, starting with the staff. As a speech therapist, I warn you that whispering is even worse than speaking, given that close to you, in all high frequencies, it is difficult to concentrate.

The staff is extremely rude and impatient, except for very rare exceptions: it seems that you are asking him for a favor, if not even it seems that you are doing him a wrong, when you need their help. In addition to rare incompetence and rudeness. They even made a mistake in entering the personal data of my card, preventing me from making a request because the details did not match.
And when I mentioned it to them they said "eh but you can see that he wrote badly".
"Or maybe you just got it wrong, as it happens to me too," I replied. While the employee in question looked at me annoyed.
Every now and then some books mostly disappear from the exam texts: someone borrows them and, as if it were their own stuff, never goes back. All in the most complete indifference of the staff who say that "it is normal" that these things happen.
Not to mention the request service which is nothing short of comic: idiotic hours, very long times and meaningless waits.
One star only for the place which is quiet. And for the locker system that has been improved.
For the rest, ridiculous.
Ps. At least in winter, turn them up a little.

The National Central Library of Rome was inaugurat...

The National Central Library of Rome was inaugurated on March 14, 1876 in a wing of the monumental sixteenth-century Palazzo del Collegio Romano, seat of the ancient Bibliotheca Secreta or Major of the Jesuits, which constituted the original nucleus of the new institution, to which the manuscript funds were added and to the press of 69 conventual libraries donated to the Kingdom of Italy after the suppression of the religious guilds of Rome in 1873. One hundred years later the Library was moved to its new location, inside the archaeological area of Castro Pretorio, between the university city and the Termini Station, built on a project by the architects Massimo Castellazzi, Tullio Dell'Anese and Annibale Vitellozzi.

Inaugurated on January 31, 1975, the new architectural complex - made of reinforced concrete, glass and aluminum for an area of over 50,000 square meters. - it is divided into four bodies: the book deposit which is spread over ten floors; offices, atrium and exhibition spaces that occupy a five-storey building; the Conference Room as a stand-alone structure; the reading rooms on a single floor, crossed by a large central gallery.

The internal spaces for the public have been recently renovated according to the new needs of a modern library structure. Architectural barriers have been completely eliminated. The realization of the project, which privileged curvilinear elements and last generation materials, multiplied the distribution points of the books; the reading rooms have been expanded and organized into thematic areas; created new rooms for meetings and seminars, a library and a cafeteria; rearranged the internal gardens. The outdoor area has also been reorganized with the construction of an amphitheater and an easier access road illuminated by lampposts.

The exhibition space of the Exhibition Hall has recently been redesigned, which has been so adapted to every kind of need in the field of promotion and enhancement of cultural heritage.

It is an excellent source of information.
Unfortunately, the distribution and loan service is not excellent especially due to the lack of personnel; fortunately for some years it has been possible to book books via the internet the day before.
The impossibility of bringing one's own texts, considered by many users as an excessive restriction, is justified by the fact that the structure is a consultation library.

The two stars concern the services of the Library. The counter of the Humanities room belongs to four rooms (Humanities, Law, Linguistics and literature and Falqui). Premising that on Saturdays the number of requests is not only reduced (one plus another on the waiting list) but can also be made within specific times (9.30, 10.30, 11.30), yesterday morning at the Humanities counter there was only one person (on some days I saw three of them). At 11.25 the queue formed and for a minute of delay I was unable to start the request for a book that I could consult by midday and a half, having to check just 4 verses. Let us reflect.

Apart from the absurd cold (November 8), as a result of which I got sick, I think it is the most acidic, rude, smart and angry staff I have ever seen. I am a librarian in my turn and if I had to treat users in this way, especially if employed in the "hospitality" sector (!!!), I would be fired in no time.
With the exception of the very kind colleagues of Ibimus, the stable staff of the reception (and in some cases also of the bar) is disgruntled. We are also talking about "anvedi this oh, the brain would be needed" exclaimed loudly by one of the employees at the acceptance towards me and an Ibimus student only because we had an uncertainty (UNCERTAINTY) in crawling the badge in the turnstile, since (our fault?) we come from outside and we simply do not have the automatisms of those who work there every day. Be ashamed, also because in doing so you disqualify your colleagues who work well and with a minimum level of education, what you acquire as children.

The catalog is undoubtedly very vast as well as stocked with titles that are often not easily found elsewhere. However the access modalities are cumbersome and regulated by an exaggeratedly rigid regulation (before it was even strictly forbidden to photograph the books, when in any other library in Rome it was allowed.) The fact that we must now crawl the card also to access the wardrobe makes entry and exit operations that are really too long, which makes it difficult even to go out and drink some water, which is forbidden to carry inside. Absurd, moreover, that the main source of disturbance is the hall assistants who constantly speak loudly.
I do not enter into the merits of the distribution methods, which are absolutely limiting compared to the direct connection. By now I come only if strictly necessary.

Even if the current situation is not the best, the library offers both loan and consultation services. Unfortunately some works cannot be booked until the dates set by them and it is a limit, but you can only stick to it.
