Absolutely fantastic experience. Food is superlative and ambience is old world vintage sexy. Everything we ordered was fantastic, esp. the mashed potatoes. Didn't have any room left for dessert, but next time! Great service at the bar and table too!

One of the best dining experiences I've had in Chicago. Yes, it did take some work to get a reservation, but no more than you'd expect for a high-demand destination. Once you've secured your spot, you can look forward to a beautiful space, a Jazz Age soundtrack, and outstanding service. The steakhouse menu also has good options for diners who want to eat lighter, including the perfectly roasted chicken. Two highlights of our first visit was the BYOB policy -- if you want to bring a splurge bottle and not pay a corkage fee, you can share a glass of your wine with a table of your choice -- and our server Chris, who provided expert guidance. We're already planning our next visit!
Bavette's was a really pleasant surprise. We had to wait for a table, but that was ok with me as we just grabbed some drinks at the bar. Everything we tried from the bar was crafted with care and tasted great! Once taken downstairs to our table the experience just kept getting better. Our server was extremely professional while being informative and he had a great sense of humor. He did an excellent job walking us through the menu and ensuring we always had everything we needed. The bone-in ribeye was perfectly cooked and really juicy. So much flavor! Try and save some room for desserts too because all the ones we tried were fought over. :)
Absolutely loved this place!! Made the reservation a month in advance and it was well worth the wait! From the appetizers to the deserts you really can't go wrong. Some of the best food we have had in Chicago!
Fantastic experience! Truly a 5 star restaurant. The steak was perfect, sides are interesting and they have a lot of things you aren't going to see in your typ Chicago steak house (beef tongue, bone marrow etc). I had the 16oz bone in fillet, cooked rare and it was fantastic. I like the bar scene as well, giant chunks of ice they have to carve down to fit in your glass, old fashions, some good craft beers etc.
Interested in trying their sister restaurant, Maude's Liquor Bar just down the street.
FYI, if you want a table for 7pm on a Sat night you are going to have to get on Open Table and book 2-3 months in advance. Plan it ahead of time, it's worth it, I swear.
This place is AWESOME! I took my girlfriend here on a date and boy is it a wonderful place for a date. The lighting is dark and romantic. The service was impeccable. The ambience is a perfect 1920 s almost speak easy vibe. Beautifully cooked steaks and wonderfully crafted cocktails. I think that the biggest pitfall is the price, but honestly for the quality of everything here I didn t think the bill was crazy high. I think you get what you pay for but would need to make it for special occasions. Bon appetit.
Staff is delightful, service is great, food was ok. We went with the suggested dishes, it was good but not OMG I need to get on their waiting list good. They do a great job observing the 2020 pandemic rules which is always appreciated.
Bavettes is an amazing experience. We were celebrating and they made the experience for us. John was our waiter and his recommendations were spot on. We knew what we had come for (delicious bone in dry aged New York strips) and I love the fact that I could leave the driving to him . With apps and sides. I just said you know what s the best, let s go with your recommendations and it was perfect. It made our special night even better. The place is just hip and fun. Enjoy. You won t be disappointed, and we will definitely be back! Thanks for making our engagement even more special!!!
Not a big steak lover but after feasting on a Filet Abigail (Filet + Crab Oscar) at Skull s Rainbow Room, Nashville, I ve embarked on a steakhouse journey in Chicago. Sampled the Baked Goat Cheese, Spiced Chicken & Filet w/ enhancement - loved it all!! Close resemblance to my Skull s experience.
However, disliked Resy experience + fees (on top of a Covid surcharge). We were seated in the dining room. Personally, I d avoid bar/high top seating - close to restrooms.
This place was awesome. The food was really good. The bartender was easy to talk to. The server was great. We did have a bit of wait even when we had a reservation but the host made sure to apologize. The server then apologized as well. We hung at the bar so it was no big deal. Great bourbon selection which paired well with the steak.
Great steak. 10oz filet prepared medium rare will be one of the best you ve ever had. Exquisite moon shoal oysters. Also had the baked goat cheese and avocado crabmeat salad. Lemon meringue pie for dessert. Everything was excellent and prepared just right.
Cocktails (old fashioned and cognac sazerac) were perfectly crafted as well.
The atmosphere is cozy as you enter. If there is a wait, the bar is nice and there is a comfortable couch and chairs. Once seated, the wait staff was attentive without being hovering. The two cocktails we had were really unique and tasty. While enjoying these, we were served the best warm sour dough bread ever. Had to stop myself. We ordered the burgers and are really glad we did. Mine was with the think cut bacon which was actually a half inch slab of bacon in top of truly scrumptious beef. The fries and side of charred broccoli were done perfectly. An amazing meal and experience for our anniversary dinner. Thank you Bavettes.
One of the best steakhouses I've been too. Great ambiance, delicious food and good selection of drinks. Although you should get here early or have a reservation since it's gets packed, felt a little rushed towards the end of the meal.
Simply one of the best restaurants in town all around, including food, drinks, and atmosphere. Only downside how early in advance you have to book reservations.
Hands down one of the best restaurants in Chicago. The bone in filet is absolutely worth it. Staff is very knowledgeable and service is top notch. Best seats are upstairs vs downstairs and drinks are very well made too.
Always a great time even with the current pandemic situation. Hospitality and service are still the same: superb and clean. Food remains exceptional. Sourdough Bread w/ Salted Butter is very good, almost as good as San Francisco sourdough. We typically get the Thick Cut Bacon and one of the Steak options. The 8oz Cheddar Burger is now one thick patty vs two (2) patties - still delicious. Dessert: Always get the Chocolate Cream Pie. Also tried the Brown Cinnamon Sugar Ice Cream - Tastes like Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Absolutely to die for! Cannot wait to visit again.
Five stars for Bavette: Excellent food, service, and ambiance. Perfect date night spot.
FOOD: Rare ribeye is perfectly charred with a cool red center. Sides are simply and expertly done highly recommend the creamed spinach and garlic mashed potatoes. Large wine selection, and Emily s dirty martinis with bleu cheese olives are perfection. The desserts are very large definitely split one instead of getting your own. SERVICE: At a table, ask for John! He s warm and welcoming, helpful with recommendations, observant and attentive but never overbearing, and has expert timing. Or if you re seated at the bar, where they do offer the full menu, Emily is also wonderful. AMBIANCE: background music is soft enough for easy conversation, lighting is low and warm, creating an intimate mood despite the large space.
Old fashioned Speak easy ambience steak house. Great menu with equal wine selection. You will not be disappointed! Def a 6 Star restaurant with top notch service.
Amazing food and service. Took a bit to get our food as the place was crowded, but the wait was more than well worth it. Best steak i have eaten probably ever. Would most definitely reccomend to anyone into good meat and great service.
Great place. Great ambiance of intimacy. Dim lighting, but lively energy without being in your face. Definitely has that French steakhouse feel. Things you should definitely get: a steak and the crab cake. The cocktails are very, very well done. The service is superb.
We managed to get a same day reservation off of open table for 10:45. On arriving, it took about 10 minutes to be seated and it was still pretty lively. The interior is dimly lit and classy, with jazz in the background.
Our waiter was immaculately dressed and was very attentive. Service was top notch, but I also didn't out of place dressed casually.
We ordered the garlic shrimp de jonghe, truffle Mac and cheese, and the 22oz dry aged ribeye. The food was extremely filling for both of us, flavorful, and I could through the steak like butter.
Total was $135; perfect for special occasions like anniversaries and birthdays.
My favorite spot to go for a birthday or special night out. Cocktails were a little sweet but everything else was perfect! Such a beautiful and intimate restaurant
My wife and I went for our wedding anniversary. They made the dining experience special with excellent service and amazing food. The ambiance is exceptional.
Very good meat 42day aged meat excellent; salmon cesar Not to good potato chips makes interesting . The asparagus were ok . The place is incredible good music good service a little loud but they works as a BAR so that's bring loud music and people . 100% recommended for the 42days aged meat . 76$ per 22oz very good size . The rib strogonoff Dont like it at all . It taste like a BBQ ribs Whit fettuccini pasta and mushroom . Taste lake anything but not strogonoff .
I have no words, only the eternal longing to the day I can meet Bavette again. Never meat been so tenders and juicy, never sides been so comforting and delicious. If only I would go back to Chicago once more, once more I would overeat to the brink of death at Bavette
We've ordered curbside pickup for several special occasions in COVID and I'm always impressed. Steak always cooked perfectly and still hot when I get home, even after a 15 minute drive. Everything packaged well in reusable deli containers or paper, no Styrofoam. Show up a few minutes early for your appointment. I always have in case of traffic and the order has been ready each time.
Very dark environment.Food was excellent!!! steak was out of this world, everything was awesome!! our waiter Kipp was friendly and helpful with explaining all the menu items~ will come again~~!!
hands down best restaurant ive every been too. Food is amazing, melts in your mouth. Sides are the best ive ever had. Decor is beautiful, staff is super nice and polite. it is expensive but for quality of food and staff and everything it is so worth it. I would go back in a heart beat. I live in Canada so i cant go as often. But when ever im back in Chicago. This is a place i have to go back to.
We had salmon and the bone in ribeye. My husband added blue cheese to the top of his steak. My salmon was cook medium, exactly how I like it. The main entree s were very good, we didn t taste the appetizers. The sides were amazing. My husband had wine. I had a martini and it was amazing!!! I had the Lillet Rose Martini. The atmosphere was upscale, cozy, and very romantic. We plan to go there again.
Went here last year for my birthday and it was amazing! We started with the bacon roasted tomato as recommended by our server, SO good! I would definitely recommend it; they use very thick bacon almost like pork belly. For dinner my husband and I split a steak and crab cake. The crab cake was good, but not spectacular. The steak was delicious. We got chocolate cake for dessert (complete with a candle) and that really ended the meal on a high note. Oh, and they even gave me a complimentary glass of wine for my birthday!
Visited this past weekend with my girlfriend after getting a recommendation from a friend. We loved it. Everything from the atmosphere to the service to the food was perfect. The thing I liked the most was it was very nice but didn't feel overly fancy or stuffy. The food was awesome, prices were reasonable in my opinion by big city standards, and the lighting/decor/music was spot on. We shared a crab cake, smoked whitefish ceasar salad, and the best burger I've ever had... If you're getting the burger ask them to add caramelized onions.. That's what I did and definitely did not regret it :)
Incredible restaurant! The jazz flowing through adds to the atmosphere. It's a wonderful place to celebrate life and special occasions. Our server Mike helped with our menu choices and the wine pairings. This is by far our favorite restaurant in Chicago! Come hungry, leave happy!
Great environment and very welcoming service. The food was fresh and delicious. Will clearly recommend this restaurant to friends and family. Reasonable rates and big meals. Great work.
Sophisticated take on the traditional Chicago Steakhouse. Dark and sexy interior is it's own space/time continuum. You are enveloped in comfort and the dark atmosphere creates a private bubble within a private bubble. Other diners almost drop away creating an intimate dinner in a very busy room.
We were well served. While our waiter was a bit of a peacock the support team was delightfully attentive but not intrusive. His unnecessary flourishes of speech and demeanor were balanced by thorough steady service from others.
It would be easy to over enjoy the bread and regret it later. Don't. Several options and customization make the seafood tower a perfect start. I haven't enjoyed seafood this fresh and tasty since moving from Miami. The bone in rib eye was perfectly cooked extremely delicious and as tender as one would expect -the fat has been dry aged into a silky succulent alchemical reaction that pleases in both taste and mouth feel.
The sides were perfectly executed. Truffled mac n cheese seems a bit expected but perhaps it is a new classic. When prepared this well it would certainly deserve to be. Charred Brussels sprouts were equally delicious. I could have passed on the loaded baked potato which while inoffensive was also unimpressive. Slightly dry and lacking the stepped up flavors of the rest of the meal it was really just a space taker on a full table.
Wine and drinks service was efficient and knowledgeable. Trust to ask for a wine with specific qualities and let the staff decide.
While price may make this a special occasion only experience for some the experience will have you searching for other occasions to make special
#rivernorthchicago: If you are looking for an escape. You must try Bavette's Bar & Boeuf. Delicious food and great drinks. A Vega hint, ask to be seated downstairs for dinner or walk down and sit at the bar. A Very cool vibe.
A stylish departure from a traditional steakhouse, Bavette s embraces French flair without the formality, blending fine dining with unabashed fun. #Tridence #chicagofoodie
Phenomenal. Steak/sides/apps were delicious, cocktails awesome, and our server was so good she outshone even the food and drinks. Make a reservation way in advance, ask for a table with Meredith, and go enjoy one of the best dining experiences in the city!
Wow! Definitely lives up to its hype! I had the dry aged ribeye, which was 22 ounces of perfection - definitely one of the best steaks I ve ever had. My wife had the 6 ounce filet mignon and she really enjoyed it! We ordered the baked goat cheese to start which was very good and came with garlic toast. For sides we opted for the mac n cheese and added chopped bacon to it. It was a $5 add on but well worth it! We also ordered the wild mushrooms which were excellent! We opted out of dessert because we were way too full! The best parts about Bavette s was the ambiance and their corkage fee: you can bring your own bottle of wine and either pay a $50 fee or send a glass to another table and they waive the fee! I highly recommend Bavette s!
Had a great dinner here the other night. This was my second visit there and it was just as good as my first visit. We had a wonderful server named Natasha who was very informative of the menu and bar menu. Answered lots of questions before we ordered and coursed our food perfectly. She even brought us a Mac and Cheese with truffles gratis because one of there special side dishes was 86 d and she felt badly after she did a wonderful job of selling us on it. I was with 3 other people and we probably ordered too much food but we just could decide. So we had the bone in ribeye steak, the Spicy Fried Chicken, Oysters, Baked Goat Cheese and and wonderful dessert special with meringue and strawberries with vanilla ice cream.
Wonderful experience. Not only are they in the food business, Bavette s is 100% in the people business, too. Not one detail was missed during our dining experience from the moment we walked in the door. Everyone was gracious, kind, and very attentive. Meredith was an exceptional server. The bone in filet was outstanding! Our date night in Chicago was perfect. Thank you!!
Great classic steakhouse with some modern elements. Steaks, lamb chops, crab cake all were great. Good wines and cocktails selection. Service is great as well.
Not only is Bavette's one of the best steakhouses in Chicago, it's one of the best meals you can get anywhere in the country. There are great restaurants, and there are spectacular restaurants... Bavettes is the latter. I go here a few times a year now and I've never had anything less than a spectacular experience. During our last visit they brought out thick cut bacon on the house, because the waiter (Claus) felt it would go perfectly with our mac n cheese and brussels (he was right). From the service, to drinks, food, atmosphere...Bavettes puts the extra touch on everything. You enjoy yourself from the minute you walk in the door until the minute you leave.
Any review to the contrary should be met with instant skepticism.
Also, one of the best old fashioneds in Chicago. If you want one of the best meals this city has to offer, go to Bavette's.
We needed To book our reservations three months in advance in order to get a Saturday evening. Everything we ordered was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. The ambience was very romantic as we sat downstairs. Definitely worth the wait .
Really cool setting and the food was great. Not the best steak I've had in Chicago but it was good. Service was good for the most part. Our server got a little snippy toward the end of the meal. Despite that I'd recommend the place to anyone in the loop.
I have been to many restaurants in Chicago and this one was one of the best! The atmosphere was fantastic and the service was as well. We had the meatloaf and the stroganoff and they were both to die for. We also enjoyed the wedge salad and the bread. Everything was just superb and I cant want to go back! Did not have a reservation, but they seated us right as they opened anyway. Thanks for a great meal!
An amazing steakhouse in Chicago! They have a really interactive BYOB policy. You can bring a standard size bottle of wine (750ml) per two people. If you want to avoid the corking fee all you have to do is share a glass with another table. We sent a glass out and we received a glass. It was such a fun experience!
We started with the baked crab cake which was phenomenal, the sauce was perfect. We ordered the classic ribeye chicago cut and it was cooked perfectly. The meat was tender and juicy. The loaded baked potato was the perfect side. We also received a free ice cream since we were dining in for my birthday.
Definitely recommend this steakhouse in Chicago and I would eat here again if I ever go back to visit!
Amazing! Truly one of he best meals I have ever had. We have all had good steak before but this dry aged bone in rib eye was the best. The drinks served up by our bartender "Dean" were amazing. We ordered a round of "Tokyo" old fashions 10 out of 10. There was a mix up with our order at the beginning, but it was quickly resolved. "Pim" one of the managers even when out of the way to speak with me the next day. Although this is a pricey place, I have spent more money on a much lesser experience.
Absolutely excellent. The downstairs is ,unchanged quieter and my preference. The steaks are absolutely amazing but the chocolate cream cake is one of the best deserts ever. We started with the crab stuffed avocado salad which also also great!
Food was great and reasonably priced. The mood setting was a little too dark to the point we needed to use the lights from our cell phones to see the menu
Mind you it's Corona virus time. But the staff did not skip a beat. Please have your mask ready during any interaction with your servers. Menu and payment will be via a QR code. The service was exceptional and food tremendous. Ordered Chicago cut ribeye with gorganzola, cream of spinach, mushroom tops, bone marrow, and the filet mignon. Had an old fashioned regular and Tokyo. Great drinks. We asked for a recommendation for wine to go with our steaks and both pairings were spot on.
Had an amazing experience with friends here for a birthday. Food was great. We brought our own bottles of wine (1 bottle for 2 people) for our group of 6 and had a blast. I LOVE the policy of giving one glass of wine to another table to avoid a cork fee. It s a nice surprise when you get one back. Very expensive, but worth it once in a while.
