Great museum - don't forget that admission for NY state residents as a fee is voluntary. That means you can elect to pay less even $0.01 or zero.
A good place to visit with kids I guess. As an adult I wasn t impressed. Not much to see and people everywhere. 4 stars because I got to see the T-Rex
Huge museum that will keep interested and mind-boggled for hours, even if you are not interested in natural history. The dinosaur exhibits were eye-catching and are the center attraction.
This is a great museum. I enjoyed all of the regular exhibits and the special exhibits on T. Rex and the Theodore Roosevelt statue.
Extremely respectful of social distancing rules.
Clean, great exhibits, some of them dated of course but that adds to the charm to the museum
Great for families
I love the American Museum of Natural History. They have the best dinosaur exhibit in the world, At least in my opinion. There are always special exhibits. The Hayden Planetarium is next door. You could plan your adventure to go to the museum during the day then go next door to see the planetarium and a star light exciting movie in the evening. Watch the show on the ceiling. Lots of fun. Admission is usually around $25 per adult but you could obtain a discount if you ask the NYC Visitors Bureau or check online. Have fun. Great place to take children.
One of the best museums worldwide. Visiting the fossils sections and the huge whale over the ocean section is a must do.
Nothing but great experience, got to see the evolution of all kinds of species that you need to spend whole day to see them. There is also space section which I really liked.
Spent the day here with the family. Terrific chance for my girls to learn about the past and see/interact. Clean, friendly service and facilities.
I always come to the museum but this year my cousin came in to town and my family and I went. We were in the painting area and the security guard wouldn t even let us read the description he kept telling us to back away. I felt like we were getting discriminated. I don t think I m ever going back their ever again.
Biggest museum of world for natural history! So amazing
Amazing, awesome. You need more than just one day to walk around and learn everything.
Great showcase of all kinds of animals and it really brings you back into the real environment because the background is so real. And it also is a good place to take your children to learn something new about nature
The line was huge to get in, but there are kiosk to get a ticket of you don't mind paying full price. The museum was gigantic!!!! We had so much fun and there was so much to see and do. I recommend this for anyone. The only thing that sucked was the cafe. The prices were outrageous! So eat before you come
Best museum in the world, great family place and iconic location.
Cool museum to check out. Not insanely big so you can easily power through it quickly. It was a pretty cool museum.
This is the typical museum you imagine coming as a tourist to the USA, just a lot bigger!
This museum takes heaps of time but if you got time or you need a way to spend a rainy day in a warm and dry area this is a proper spot.
It has a lots of mammals, reptiles and dinosaurs from all over the world.
Of course the they also show the offspring of men and other animals.
I loved it. One of my favorite places to visit in nyc.
Amazing exhibits! We only did 4th floor for the dinosaurs and half of the first floor of mammals. We were there for about 3 hours. Then got some hotdogs and ate in Central Park across he street. My 3 year old loved it!
Always discovering something new every time I come here. Depending on how interested you are in what they have to offer, you could go through the entire museum in as short as 2 hours, or as long as the entire day (if you even finish seeing everything). Great place to go for dates and family days; great even if you're by yourself. The food might be a tad overpriced but the cost of entry is suggested so that fact doesn't bother me so much! I'll never get tired of AMNH
That place was awesome with lots of stuff to view. I love it.
Incredible. We didnt even get to finish seeing everything! Has unique pieces you can't see or learn about elsewhere.
Terrible customer experience. The employee at the membership desk was awful. She Had no personality at all. No interaction at all. No smile. Sad displays when you figure that most of the animals on display were killed to be there. School groups run rampant with no museum staff anywhere. I won t be back.
Museum is great... some security personnel could be a little bit more respectful and welcoming. It's understandable that the safety measures mustn't be taken lightly but that doesn't mean or allow to be rude.
Beautiful museum that you could easily get lost in (both literally and figuratively).
Some great exhibits and nice open spaces. Hard to navigate on weekends if using a stroller because the elevators get super crowded. Outside 2nd floor courtyard with fountain great in the summer.
The expansive museum and a must visit treat for museum lovers. Lapin and I came here on a Saturday afternoon. The donation based museum had long lines leading all the way down it's hallmark steps. While, I am sure the more lesser known entries would have been less crowded, we were lazy and just waited on line. The staff was more or less helpful, some were annoyed (ticketing agents -- but who can blame them with the long lines). It's a fun way to kill time if you are in the area, even if you are not a museum buff. While, I do love the museum, the only thing I didn't like is that they have these small newer "special" exhibits that look awesome but cost way more than they are actually worth (If I recall correctly, around $14 dollars per an exhibit...then again I came from a boozy brunch so...don't quote me). If you want to save time, buy your tickets online for full price but if you have the time and don't want to spend much money, wait on the line and you can pay what you wish.
The museum opens from 10am to 5:45pm, so if you want to see the entire museum come early as if you did what we did and waited 3 hours before closing time, you will feel rushed.
The cafe in the basement is great. This museum trip started in Glen Rose Texas. That's where the first dinosaur tracks were found. Such a great find the Museum of NH wanted them. Giving Texas a couple fiberglass dinosaurs like you would find at mimiature golf.... Anyway, I've been to the site in Texas, now I've tracked the "Glen Rose Tracks" to NYC. Pictured. See the other part of my story at Dinosaur Valley SP in Texas. See my track pics there.
Never got to see the inside. The sassy security lady did a go away hand gesture as soon as she saw my suitcase (I was catching a flight later that night, but really wanted to see the collections while I m in town). I asked nicely if there s any other solution, because I won t get a chance to come back in a while. She answered with yeah, take it outside and a finger snap. I understand the policy but all that attitude was not necessary.
Initially wanted to visit this place as many movies are filmed here. Did felt like I was in the movie when I saw the African animals on display. It's really worth it, large museum so it would take hours, it can get a bit complicated so utilize a map. You pay the amount you want for admission.
I've been there in 2014. So, so, so HUGE. Fantastic museum. Great experience.
Most natural history museums have pretty similar displays, this one definitely has some more impressive displays and it's quite large, you can spend a lot of time here. The Hayden planetarium is pretty neat and of course the dinosaur exhibits are fun. Be prepared for a packed entrance hall and lots of kids. Would also highly recommend stopping by the Teddy Roosevelt area in the middle of the museum, because he's awesome.
The perfect place to geek out about science! I ran from hall to hall trying to see and absorb everything I could in a few hours I had. I added on to see the 4D Dark Universe show narrated by Neil De Grasse-Tyson and cried because it was so beautiful.
I would definitely come here again. The people who run the exhibits really care, it seems like. Each looked very well put-together.
Check to see if you can get in for free with a student pass or corporate perk
Great informative and intriguing place to take the kids very interactive and entertaining 5 out of 5 for all ages
I absolutely love this museum. I'm not sure if people realize there are multiple entrances. If you intend on paying the suggested admission, you can purchase tickets in advance and skip the line. I usually use the Rose Center entrance. You may need a day or two to see everything.
It was a little confusing when entering thru using the parking garage.
Loved this museum as a child and all through adulthood. Can never get enough. It's still my favorite place to go anytime.
My memories of this museum from my childhood days (almost 60 years ago) are of the dinosaur exhibits. The exhibits are first-rate, awe-inspiring, and make a visit to this museum a must. Yes, there's more to see, but this is the main attraction. (Political aside: unfortunately, the dino hall is sponsored by one of the Koch Brothers, in his continued effort to assuage his conscience for the damage he has done to the environment and political comity in the USA).
Tons of different stuff to see. You can spend hours there and not even get to everything. Good for most age groups.
You can get lost in here for hours. So much to see, perfectly spaced out. Nice employees
There are so many things to see. You won't be able to explore the entire museum in one day for sure. I would say this is one of the world best museums. It's definitely on my top 5 list.
This has gotta be one of the coolest museums I've ever been to! All the animal exhibits are phenomenal! Technically there isn't a charge for general admission but help them out and make some type of a donation. Keep in mind, some parts of the museum do require you to pay the full fee in order to see them.
I have to stop here every time I visit the city. There s so much to see and it s pay what you want so you can stop in for just a couple hours and give them what you think is fair.
Awesome museum with plenty to see. Planetarium shows are always my favorite but I wish the space exhibit got some re-do. The dinosaur's are fascinating to see. A few smaller exhibits could use an update but otherwise there is plenty of great stuff to see!
TINA Y, asks Why? No need for racist statute
I did like the museum and everyone that worked there was nice. Why the two stars?
I do think it is time to take down the statute in the front. It is 2019, not 1919. I do not think a statue built in the 1930s, showing a well clothed-well armed Caucasian man on a horse with an African American man and a Native American man (lesser clothed, lesser armed, lesser mobility- basically lesser than) walking behind him is the best message for our young diverse population.
We can do better. I understand this is sensitive, but come on people. Imagine what that says to all people (especially children looking up). This time in our history took away rights for many people. It should not be glorified.
I am not saying we should destroy this. I am saying it should belong inside the museum in the new section of white supremacy post Civil War, because that is what it represents. If we could not be tribal and be honest. Can the head honcho decision makers not see this. It is so obvious. I will be doing a survey of this in the coming months asking visitors what they think.
It will eventually come down. It is just a matter of time. Be the brave person that lawfully brings it down.
If I may humbly paraphrase Dr. King:
Do not be the white moderate who is more devoted to order than to justice.
The picture below is from a survey in the 1960s about how children will think less of themselves if they are portrayed negatively. There are also two pictures of the statute. The former President of Barnard should be able to see this.
If you agree please do what you can - todays people run this city, not the people from 100 years ago. Every effort helps. Leave a like, leave negative reviews, write letters, protest. We can do this together. There are enough negative images for our young children of color, let s bring this one down.
I am getting over a thousand views a day, hopefully someone reads this and can help.
Educational, sanitary, fun. They nickel and dime you for everything, and the gift shop may as well be its own exhibit.
I can't describe how beautiful is this museum, many levels, you will need a couple days to see all the marvelous things. History of the world in front of you. A place that you Must visit. Highly recommend it to anyone.
really disorganized place. we purchased virtual tickets for a smart phone from a kiosk by the Museum parking garage and the staff did not recognize them or know what to do with them. so we had to wait in a huge line again to get printed ones. also we had limited time and finding the exhibit we wanted to see was a real challenge.
Confusing exhibits, with no real flow from one to the next. It felt like they were just tacked on at random as space allowed. We found more shops and entrances than felt really necessary, and the food court had a nasty smell. We ate elsewhere once we escaped. Also, the times exhibits were difficult to organize and plan your day around. This was supposed to be our highlight, and we were super disappointed.
I enjoy every part of that museum... The kids love it.. The food is good a bit to expensive
I came all the way from Canada for this and I was not disappointed
Great museum but even with CityPass it would've been quicker to join the line to buy tickets. Two people working and so damn slow.
Great historical musuem with largest collection of dinosaur fossil
Fantastic place with so much to see and learn. A lot more than can easily be fit in during a single visit. Been twice and still haven't seen it all. Food in the food court is nice but very expensive.
Thanks Harry Frank Guggenheim....Great Hall and Lots of Knowledge.....Great for Experts and Enthusiasts....also Kids....
A must go place for all.. great collections and the museum is huge. You need atleast half day to visit the entire museum.. the best part is that you can catch a metro in the lower level of the museum..
Sweet museum, highly reccomend. Deffinatly going back next time I'm in nyc!
So very much too see. Would be an amazing home school experience if you had all day.
I easily spent a few hours here and didn't even notice the time flying by. I really enjoyed the dinosaur exhibit... just fascinating! The exhibits on peoples of different civilizations was also amazing. I went on a weekday afternoon and it wasn't too crowded. I was able to take my time perusing at my own pace without feeling like I was getting in people's way.
Wonderful museum. Great for helping one grasp how large/small living things can be.
What s the point of going? They re more concerned with setting up for their parties and closing everything super early. Why waste the money when you can t see everything? The best part was the blue whale and even that closed early. Plus there s dust on the tops of every case. Put those workers you have setting up tables and speakers to work cleaning. Have a great day......
One very big and astonishing place for knowledge. With the contents of it's halls it redefines what you may expect from the human race. Its diversity, its science and culture mixed up into one, an amazing race towards discovery.
This place is great and a must see. Kids & adults love it. I've lived here 13 years and still haven't seen it all. It's huge. It gets super crowded during the summer. My advice: go when they open. Special exhibits are usually time slotted for crowd control so if you can buy online in advance. Enjoy!
Get there early and stay ahead of the mid day crowd and it is a wonderful experience.
Easy entrance and exist. The staff were knowledgeable and helpful.
Neat old building and many good exhibits. I m definitely the minority but I found myself getting a little bored. I enjoyed the metropolitan museum much more.
Came back a few times to this museum. Some sections I particularly like are the Rose Earth and space section, the one on human evolution and the one on biodiversity.
This is also a fantastic place for children and I have seen countless families showing their children the wonders of Earth and the universe here. A must visit.
Fantastic went for a few hours and spent the whole day. One of the best collections around and a definite must when in NYC.
As much as it is amazing to see all the history and all the especial exhibitions you will need all day to see the different levels that the museum have to offer the only thing that I didn't like was maintenance a lot of the exhibition where really dusty and some of the hallways lights where out and bathrooms where not keep clean.
A great museum. There are lots of regular and special exhibitions all year long and it would be interesting for both kids and grownups. It's very clean and they have added a lot of new and interactive exhibits. It's huge, has many shops, labs, planetarium and a very nice kids discovery room (good for ages 1 - about 10). If you're in NYC and never been , it's a must place to visit, since it's that big I would plan what you're going to see in advanced or check with the nice information desks guys over there before you start. The suggested fee is 12$ but it's donation based so you can leave any amount (especially important for larger groups ).
Fantastic museum, it's very big, I found myself lost many times there. Keep in mind that you need many days to see everything no rush, enjoy the museum.
This museum is interesting for people with any age and any tastes. I saw kids hipnotized by the animals, and also found myself this way, even though I prefer art museums. The collections are awesome!
My tip is to go with plenty time, no rush, and select in the museum map which parts you will like to see, because you can t see all in one day.
The price was really fair (18 dollars with student discount), and I would love to repeat the experience!
Terrible experience. Arrogant pernonnel. Would never come again
Rich collection of natural history. I spent almost a day here to explore and join in a seminar. Many Schools sent their students to gather knowledge about history and natural fundamentals.
ISLAMIC rich collection here from the Arab colony until present.
A beautiful Museum Shop around the corner. You can buy souvenirs from there to keep in your collection. Here are some snaps from my camera attached.
I haven't seen it yet but I am tommrow with my class and it looks good from the outsie
The worst museum I've ever visited. If you like looking at bones, stuff animals, and rocks, this place is for you. If you are looking for something a little more interesting save your money or walk to the other side of the park and visit the MET. Me and my wife were in and out of this place in about 2.5 hours.
It's ok.. I don't understand why I paid an extra fee for exhibits that lacked something extra... I feel there should be a live performance or guide to lead the "timed" exhibit... It was just another room with information to read.. Y charge extra for that?
Place gets very packed. But overall it was ok. A few of the exhibits were under construction which made it a little dull. The senses exhibit was nice and interactive. My kids enjoyed it but were bored if we stood in one area too long. Would love for them to have more activities for younger children.
I highly recommend it.
Endless history
You can be there for days and still not cover half of the museum !!
A learning establishment with priceless education!!!
One of my favorite museums in the city. Beautiful and informative displays......
Never gets old. Even as an adult this place still fills me with wonder.
This is a good place to get lost for the day. There are so many things for you to explore and you really don't want to rush. It really is an immersive learning experience which makes it great for kids and adults. Try to go early in the day and take your time to get the most from it.
