Excellent museum in the heart of Manhattan. Was overwhelmed by how massive it was. Spent 4 hours here and probably didn't touch 25% of the exhibits and skimmed through a good portion of them. The animal galleries were easily the highlight, although the dinosaur skeletons were impressive as well. Found the cultural exhibits to be a bit boring. Would probably give this five stars, if not for the insane crowds the entire time. I got tired of constantly waiting to view an exhibit and getting pushed around. Also had to wait in a long line to get in.

Such an amazing museum in a stunning building. The place is huge so allow plenty of time to get around it if you want to see all exhibits. Book tickets online and you don t queue at all.

Hands down best museum! Easy to take the subway to & excellent collection of dinosaur exhibits. So much to do make sure you allow enough time. Located across the street from Central Park too. Will definitely visit again!

I have visited this place many times and I can never get tired of looking at all the exhibitions. Now my three year old is in love with dinosaurs and what a better place than this. He absolutely loved it.

I can't say too many good things about this place so I'll just say that it is absolutely fantastic.

I've been here countless times both with and without my daughters and I've still only seen a small offering of what the museum has. While it's usually dinosaurs, space, and the large blue whale for my kids, the variety of anthropological exhibits is astounding and the special exhibits are done with great care (I'm talking about you, Cuba).

If you do have kids, make sure to stop by the discovery center on floor 1. I just found the little nook the other day and it's a place that I could spend an entire day with my kids.

Highly recommended, but just realize that there is no way you'll absorb everything in a day.

Horrendous to navigate. There is a lot to see, but there is no navigational information to help you see everything on each floor. Every few hundred yards is a little shop. It turns out that they force you to go through them to complete the circuit if each floor. Having avoided the shops, it took me forever to figure this out. Additionally, the maps are terrible with no indication of hire to easily and smoothly see everything. Unlike every international museum, there are no barcodes so that you can use your phone to access more information or see the data in another language. In short, lot of neat stuff but laid or so badly as to make it a horrible experience, and I can't recommend it.

Fun fact. The museum has a massive collection of artifacts that are relative to numerous species on the planet as well as some species that have been extinct for many many years. You can also find intriguing exhibitions that change througout the year and focus on differing animals, plants and time periods. Journey through the universe in the spectacular Rose Center for Earth and Space. Walk through a re-creation of an African rain forest in the Hall of Biodiversity.

My family and I had an awesome experience here. Initially, I came here to see one exhibit but was blown away by as many artifacts that I saw. This museum is definitely a must see place and I would highly recommend you take your young one...

This museum is among the best in NYC and is worth visiting of special note is the Dinosaur floor. So be sure to see that first if you only have a day to visit. First time visitors should go in through the east side to experience the cool entrance.

I thoroughly enjoyed this museum so very many things to see we spent 4 hours here and still didn't see everything, the reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the food is so over priced and the quality is terrible.

We visited the museum because it's a must from what they told us. The main museum was just ok, we thought. Very dark and aged. It definitely needs some updating but the top floor where the Dinosaurs are was amazing (I believe it's the latest addition to the museum and you can tell, it's day and night from the rest of the building). I still recommend it and you can definitely spend hours there easily.

When I was a kid I tried to climb the dinosaur bones. Yea...you re not really supposed to do that. Got yelled at by a guard. It s all good though, live and learn. They had a poison dart frog exhibit here once, so dope. A classic spot.

There's tons to see here. Good option to hide from the heat in the summer. There's enough interactive exhibits for the kids. My highlights are the dinosaur and extinct mammals section, and the earth and space section.

ig, impressive collections - but nothing that asbolutely rocked me, or sets this place so far apart from other similar institutions around the world. The updated galleries on the first floor around the "blue whale" room were most enjoyable and impactful for me.

Much of the rest of the content is more "how museums used to be" - rows of cases with objects. There is some context, but less so. And fewer cross-linkages.

Good to visit. Put I wouldn't put it on my essential top 5 for a 2 day trip.

Too bad some of the museum was closed like the meteorite section one of the most interesting for the public. Maybe from the virus or lack of manpower but close some other sections to leave that one open. I'll probably never be back there though

I spent 5 good hours there. Wish I had more time. The museum is fantastic but keep in mind it is huge. I visited 3 of the 4 special exhibits - Dark Space one was superb. I also enjoyed the butterflies exhibition too.

A highlight in NYC! Pay what you want for the entry fee (knowing that it helps the museum and the scientists to keep working), but then, just explore all the areas ! A bit like a maze sometimes, no clear path to follow, but still a great place.

One of my favorite places to just walk around in the city. See all the animals and dinosaurs and ask the science and just be in awe of what has been discovered in the world only to find out it's such a small portion.

I'm sure that the museum is as spectacular as everyone says it is. Sadly I can't confirm this as by the time we'd got through all the lines we'd just about had enough. The line for tickets was huge, so we purchased on line tickets, only to be told we'd purchased vouchers and not tickets and so had to go back to the ticket line. Because we had vouchers and not cash, it was a complicated process to get the tickets... and then we had to join another line to have the tickets scanned. When we got towards the front of the scan queue, they changed their minds and we were let in just on a quick visual of the tickets.

The exhibits I did see were pretty amazing especially the human origins section. The rest passed in a blur of sore feet and tiredness. Our small group consisted of people from Florida, Maryland, Ohio, New Jersey, New York and myself from the UK and our experience could have been so much better. We were left with the impression that visitors were an unavoidable inconvenience to staff who were there to look after the museum.

Its pay as you can. There's so much to see: reptiles, birds of the world, dinosaurs, mammals, etc. Arrive a few minutes early before they open and expect to be there for more than 3 hours if you like to read and learn. Great place to go with the family.

You can spend days in here, it's huge and so well maintained, you'll never get bored. We took advantage of a wonderful free walking tour with Nicole Paisner who showed us the highlights of the museum. Nicole made this a great experience with all the anecdotes and interesting facts about the history of the museum and items on display. We've never been there before and you can feel a bit lost on your own. The Dark Universe show was impressive and very educational, maybe a bit short but appropriate for this broad audience.

I would have given 5 stars but two of the employees there were very rude. On Sunday, at the Butterfly Conservatory and the T-Rex exhibit both employees responsible for checking tickets had attitude issues. On such a slow day they should have at least taken their eyes off of their phones, and said some sort of greeting other than "ticket *scoff* ... go in" back to phone.

As a new annual family member I was disappointed. But I will say that ALL of staff at the Dark Universe exhibit were amazing and kind. Even suggested a good spot of my son and I to sit for the show.

The perfect nature museum. This place is a must visit for basically everyone. It has everything from dinosaurs artifacts to meteorites. Endless sea of knowledge and discoveries that will blow you away. Come here ready to spend a few hours of walking around and reading the various explanations about each item. An absolutely amazing experience, I would come here again for sure.

Expect to spend money! This museum is supposed to be by donation so that even people with little money can enjoy it but the "suggested donation" is upward of $20/person. Most people dont read the fine print on the signs and dont realize that this hefty price is only "suggested". You have to donate the suggested price if you buy tickets onlines, otherwise you can wait on the long lines there. If you go to see an attraction like the T-Rex exhibit, you must pay through the nose. I spent $45 for an adult and kid to walk through the 15 minute room/hall of trex that wasnt worth it. Food and souvenirs are obviously overpriced but that is to be expected because unfortunately we live in a world where it is not only acceptable, but also expected for museums and other places of interest to rob you blind for food when visiting them. If you are going for the dinosaurs, I suggest the Yale Peabody museum (Peabody also has a decent display of rocks, bugs, and Egyptian artifacts including a mummy), or even this museum without the Trex exhibit. If you are going for the animal exhibits, I suggest the Bronx Zoo (get the pass it is worth it).
This museum was also packed. We originally planned on going on Good Friday but the lines were around the block. We ended going the weekend after Easter, before it even opened, and it was still packed (but at least we didnt wait on lines for hours).
As far as the things that they displays, they are somewhat interesting. There are 4 floors. A kid (who just looks at the stuff with reading) would finish in about 2 hours, give or take, if they walked through the entire thing without stopping for food or bathrooms. An adult might have more interest in the things there and read more so it could take them much longer (depending on how much they read). We liked the dinosaur floor and the ocean life the best. The animal exhibits werent too exciting for us because weve been to the Bronx Zoo and seen most of those animals alive and running around, not just stuffed and in glass. We didnt see any Egyptian exhibit, but maybe we somehow missed it.
If going with kids, definitely do the most interesting stuff first, dont just go by floors. It can get tiring for kids. Leave for a while and get something to eat to refuel before re-entering the museum. Especially with little kids, it can be alot of walking and navigating through crowds can be extra exhausting.

It's a good museum with great content, especially on the dinosaurs. However, it's a little bit old fashioned.

Tip for the locals: IDNYC cardholders ages 18 and older are eligible for a free one-year membership at the American Museum of Natural History.

You must visit the American Museum of Natural

You must visit the American Museum of Natural
History. It showcases the historical taxidermy mounts of Carl Akeley, the "father of American taxidermy," whose contributions to the AMNH and the Field Museum in Chicago shaped the exhibition of African mammals. The AMNH has not succumbed to the "dumbing-down" of museums (evidenced in display legends that in so many museums today seem geared to entertainment rather than education), yet is at the vanguard of public education through their permanent displays and their many special exhibitions (at present, one is "Mummies," which includes explanation and display of modern, non-invasive techniques which scientists use today in working with mummies).

Please visit the AMNH in NYC, and the Field Museum in Chicago. They subscribe to the mission of a museum.

Great museum. A lot of information and displays. You may not see the entire museum in one day. Kids also get tired when you keep moving from one room to the other. Rather you can sort out your preferences and see only those in a reasonable time.

Very cool place! Lots to learn from and you'll be fascinated by the things they have. The T-Rex exhibition was the main reason I went... honestly it's not worth the extra you pay. It thought it would be far more interactive and educational and their VR had "technical difficulties" which they didn't tell you when you pay.
Overall, go but stick to the basic exhibits.

Well, despite the fact that my young children are probably more excited about the building itself than about what it contains, the AMNH continues to be a remarkable resource and a beautifully maintained institution. We absolutely love visiting the museum.

Amazing is an understatement. This museum is great for both children and adults, and many of the interactive exhibits, such as the butterfly room, are more than worth it. It is recommended to buy tickets ahead of time on a weekend, though it still can be fairly busy during the week.

Some of the exhibits were old and had not been updated for years. There was little about the conservation of the animals displayed.

Most annoying was that artefacts were not dated. There was little context to many of the human exhibits so we did not know what exactly we were looking at.

Compared to the Met or the Natural History Museum in London it was disappointing.
