This place overall is pretty cool! I really enjoyed my time here. I went on a trip to this place with my class. I ve went here 2 times. Going here was a full on experience for me. The models of the animals were very fascinating and realistic. This place is very modern.

Okay so I waited years to visit here and although we ran around due to time constraints we were underwhelmed. The start wasn't great. Firstly we did the whole 40 mins in a queue to arrive at a horrid security girl that looked and acted in an unprofessional manner; shaved head with pony tail and trousers hanging of her. Her attitude stunk shouting at the patrons about having their bags open, "Did you hear me? OPEN YOUR BAGS, DO YOU HEAR ME!? She was a disgrace and make everyone feel anxious. In the UK she would be fired on the spot but in NYC attitude seems to be acceptable. I can only compare the experience to London and the big difference is that most things on display are more like mock ups and the experience is a little dated. The information available is fantastic but overall I wasn't sad to leave. I guess when you get shouted a before you arrive it ruins the excitement and the illusion!
This has been one of my favorite places in the entire world since childhood. It's undergone many changes since I was a kid but it still has the same magic. it could be free or "donation based" for just the museum none of the special attractions or Planterium. The cafe and restaurants are good here- pro tip grab a sandwich from a local deli and eat outside because it is expensive to eat in the museum. If it's your first time here or it's been a while I suggest grabbing a map because it can be confusing. My only criticism- and maybe it's my faulty childhood memory- but you can tell what parts of the museum do not see the love they deserve. The gemstone section need a proper cleaning and dust off- and native American sections were so sadly neglected to name two sections. The areas that needed a good glow up- felt like those siblings in a family that are just kinda there but never really hyped up for their accomplishments.
I love this museum! Especially the dinosaurs. No matter how old I am their collections never cease to amaze me! They have other things as well such as the human anatomy, gemstone collections, animal models from around the globe, and marine collections. The staffs are plenty helpful and they manage the CDC guideline for this pandemic well. In order to visit, you have to book your visit online. If you're from NY, NJ and PA you get to pay as you wish given that you bring prove of address with you (state ID/driver's license/electricity bills/library card). One ID card is applicable for a party of 3.
Just an overall amazing museum. I am pretty sure you could spend days in there if you looked at everything. I highly recommend gping there if you are in New York. There is something to look at for everybody!
Don't miss it when you visiting NY, I suggest to visit this museum which located across the Central Park. You can donate to the museum instead of admission fee.
I was very happy when I visited to this Museum, my child also liked Museum. I recommend when you will visit to this museum you should go to cosmos area inside of the museum, because it veri interesting and amazing.
This place is really good and massive , but be warned getting on can be a bit of a mission (lack of staff helping customers figure out ticket machines) . Some of the exhibits are a little but sub par but overall there is so much to see here you won't leave disappointed. You could easily loose a whole day in here
Worst experience of my entire New York life . The ticketing agent was so rude and unprofessional. I was with my professor and my classmate . Everyone paid $1 or 5 cent . I went there and I told her I have a project to do and I am from ccny . She got up and started har bla bla bla talk . She ended up screaming. And bullying me . I felt that she is not normal . She was so rude and misbehaving with me for no reason . She told me she have right to escort me from the building . My friend was with me and they were in shock by her rude and unprofessionalism .
Great museum for locals and travelers alike - you could spend days checking everything out. Like many, I was a fan of the dinosaur exhibits as well as the evolution exhibits. A must-see when visiting New York!
This museum is simply amazing in its variety, storytelling and attention to detail in the exhibits. Worthwhile a trip from another continent simply for a visit. We could easily have spent two full days here. Greetings from Europe!
The American Museum of Natural History is one of the world s preeminent scientific and cultural institutions. Since its founding in 1869, the Museum has advanced its global mission to discover, interpret, and disseminate information about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through a wide-ranging program of scientific research, education, and exhibition.
The Museum is renowned for its exhibitions and scientific collections, which serve as a field guide to the entire planet and present a panorama of the world's cultures.
The Biodiversity and Environmental Halls offer a vivid and inspiring vision of the spectacular beauty and abundance of life on Earth.
Ninety miles north of New York City in Dutchess County lies Stissing Mountain and the village of Pine Plains. Here, as in other parts of the world, each individual feature of the landscape is the home of definite plants and animals whose lives depend upon their environment and upon each other. This hall is intended to give you a better understanding of a living landscape.
The Hall of Biodiversity presents a vivid portrait of the beauty and abundance of life on Earth, highlighting both biodiversity and the factors that threaten it. Ecological biodiversity is illustrated by a 2,500-square-foot walk-through diorama that depicts part of the Dzanga-Sangha rain forest, one of Earth s most diverse ecosystems. Featuring more than 160 species of flora and fauna, the diorama uses video and sound to re-create the ecosystem at dawn, at an elephant clearing, and degraded by human intervention along a road. The hall s Spectrum of Life exhibit showcases the diversity of life resulting from 3.5 billion years of evolution. More than 1,500 specimens and models, from microorganisms to terrestrial and aquatic giants, are organized into 28 groups along the 100-foot-long installation.
The Hall of North American Forests explores the ecology and variety of the forests of North America from a northern spruce and fir forest of Ontario to a giant cactus forest in Arizona in addition to highlighting the forest food web and presenting techniques for protecting forests.
The hall also features a slice of a 1,400-year-old sequoia tree, underscoring the immense size and longevity of this species, as well as a display that illustrates how environmental stresses such as defoliation, windstorms, and fire can affect tree growth.
The Milstein Family Hall of Ocean Life highlights the drama of the undersea world and its diverse and complex web of life in a fully immersive marine environment. The hall is home to one of the Museum s most celebrated displays a 94-foot-long, 21,000-pound model of a blue whale suspended from the ceiling. It was in the ocean about 3.5 billion years ago that the first life on Earth arose. Today, the planet s oceans are home to an amazing diversity of life in a wide range of habitats, from tropical coral reefs to the frigid polar seas. Still, many parts of the ocean are poorly known, and less than 5 percent of the deep ocean has been explored. For every new species, there may be hundreds more yet to be discovered. The 29,000-square-foot hall features models of more than 750 sea creatures, ranging from tiny green bubble algae to computerized glowing jellyfishes. The hall also includes high-definition video projections, interactive computer stations, hands-on models, 14 classic dioramas, and eight ocean ecosystem displays that transport visitors from the profusion of life in the Indo-Pacific coral reefs to the bioluminescent fishes in the eerie darkness of the deep sea.
Exhibitions are very nice. No bathrooms signage what so ever. When we finally found them, after we asked security guard, the condition was disgusting. Cafeteria staff was very friendly but selection and quality were very poor.
Very up and down. Some things were great but they were over shadowed by others. The place wasn't very well sign posted, it was difficult to get round and the map wasn't very helpful. There was also a temporary t rex exhibit which when we got to it we couldn't go in as you needed separate tickets but there were no signs to indicate this and the lady on the desk was horribly rude and unhelpful. Disappointing experience.
If you want to know about anything regarding our world, the answers are here. Exhibits are timely and detailed as well as beautifully displayed. Climate is comfortable, cafe is reasonably priced, docents are available for questions, staff is friendly and helpful. I've visited five times and still find corners I haven't explored. Always delightful.
It wasn't as crowded as last month's Art Walk and my 3rd eye is telling me it's due to some hot mess disagreements amongst the organizers over the running of the Art walk. And maybe the rain too. Anyway, I guess since it has been so hugely successful, people are toying with the idea of turning it into for pay venue.
Great showcase of all kinds of animals and it really brings you back into the real environment because the background is so real. And it also is a good place to take your children to learn something new about nature
Spectacular, of course, but more can be done in terms of internal and external signage and navigation aids. The app is very useful for that, but that doesn't mean that signs, maps, circulation should be that neglected.
Wundervolles Museum I think I never saw such a terrific collection of history and preparations before . Super children friendly and fazinating for everyone. They have at least 5 diffrent exhibitions. You make a donation to enter the museum. So it's up to you how much it is worth to keep this amazing place.
Loved my visit to the American Museum of Natural History. The one thing is was super crowded. But with just enough space for you to enjoy. The street food outside was good too.
I don't think I can add much to all the great reviews, but the AMNH is really awesome. My most recent visit had a couple of exhibits closed down, but we still managed to spend almost the entire day roaming. The museum has a great variety of displays that offer something for everybody. The gift shop has lots of great stuff for kids and adults, and isn't nearly expensive as one would think. Not that it's cheap. Overall, a must for any New Yorker, or anybody really. A fantastic journey through the history of our species and our planet.
Lovely museum, neat exhibits and 3D imax but, all cafes inside are insanely overpriced so will never revisit. $3 for a small chocolate bar... The sandwich cheese was literally frozen...poor customer service on top floor and not clean either. Go only if desperate.
Massive museum with fantastic displays across the entire spectrum of science, from dinosaurs to space, to understanding climate change and then peoples of the world. The Discovery Room was fantastic for my 3yo daughter who loved putting together a life-sized dinosaur skeleton model. You could spend several days at this place.
Very large and informative place to visit. Some more popular exhibits tend to get over crowded (dinosaurs & food court, for example) but you can beat the crowds by going on weekdays and when summer school programs are finished. Don't be discouraged by the "admission price" they'll happily take a smaller donation for dull admittance.
A great museum in Newyork city in Manhattan close to Central Park. Here specially huge collection about dianosour and other world mummels and other regular show. Huge museum . It s a also kids fun place, Better if you come 2 days then easily you can cover whole think , include the all show.
The museum is great for families and is a good experience for all ages, however a couple of the exhibits can be quite confronting for littler children.
I enjoy visiting this museum whenever they host educator evenings. I have been to a Cuba exhibit and another that was beyond my understanding of science, but I go because you get to learn about the exhibits through different lens. The wine+cheese are also a perk! Signing up through their website is a cinch.
An amazing place to bring the kids and an even better place to go without them. There is just so much to see (and read) here it's really hard to do with kids, as kids being kids they want to look at things and run through.
It it is a beautiful building nicely laid out with very informative educational and artistically done displays.
If you like museums you've got to give this place at least half a day, to even give it all a cursory gance.
Also being on vacation with a family of five it's easy to spend a fortune but with the pay as you want feature it can really save you a bundle. I'm in no way suggesting that you go in and pay the bare minimum as the museum does use its admissions towards upkeep but if you've got kids that you know are gonna run through it's a really expensive to pay $150 for just a couple hours.
We paid 20 for the five of us and managed to keep the kids interested for about three hours , it probably would've been longer but we'd already walked a lot that day and they were exhausted. So if you're in town you've got to get this place shot.
We also found out that by not entering the main entrance we saved a lot of time by not being in such a crowded spot.
We were there in november 2015. It was impressive. There was just so much to discover. Of course you had to wait in line because of the many tourists, but it was still worth a visit.
First time there everything was good few sections were close due to covid-19 i believe took us little bit over 3 hour's to do all floors but it definitely would take longer if you take time to actually appreciate everything overall all nice experience
super amazing, the planetarium is a killer. i saw the show in the space exibit. it was dark matter with the guy who i forgot his name but loves science. i love how you lye back and experience the world from your seat. and also the dino's in the lobby never cease to amaze me.
My trip to the museum was one to remember, I haven't been there lately but when I went it was an amazing experience. I learned so much from the few hours I went for. I wish that I stayed for more, but overall it's worth the trip and going for free made the whole thing even better
Great museum for a family! Our 7 year old grandson was overwhelmed with the Titanosaur and many of the dinosaurs! Some of the exhibits on the 1st floor were rather dated, yet in some ways so are we ...
Plan on a full day and wear comfy shoes! You can bring in water so you can keep hydrated!
Guided Tours at the AMNH make it all the more interesting with depth. For Museum buffs like me, of recommend buying the AMNH Annual Card and make the most of its validity over a year. Weekday parking is @$13 for an all day pass at the AMNH's parking lot. And there's a "Saravana Bhavan" round the corner of Amsterdam St.! ,
Can't the the full exhibition of dinosaurs. The hall with the T-Rex is under maintenance and this was the reason for our visit. But there was no information at the entrence. The other exhibitions are good and can be recommended.
It's very educational for the children we grown-ups also enjoy, the childrens and we learned a lot about the prehistoric world and the rest of the animals,Is a very nice place to visit.
There are PLENTY of things to see. There s so much that it gets overwhelming to try and look at everything. I had to just wander until I found things that interested me. I live the exhibits that were of real things. There was a small ecosystem that was sealed in 1999 and not opened since. It s very cool to see a self sustaining sphere. I d highly suggest this place to anyone!!!
Clean, well-organized, grand, and just plain awesome. The entrance fee is donation-based. My family and I only had roughly 2 hours to look around so we had to walk fast. Set a plenty of time aside for more relaxed experience. All the age group will enjoy their displays.
We visited last Friday it was amazing see the expression of my children in every room we step in. The ladies who do the tour in 2nd floor are very friendly and they know a lot!!! Highly recommended for ages 6 to up because is a lot of walk.
It's a landmark you have to visit at least once. Though the exhibits tend to have more appeal for the kids, it can still be quite fun to go through the museum (just be prepared for some noise/distraction from school groups often passing by). The Hayden Planetarium is a must - pretty spectacular programming.
If you are not raising both hands in the Armory and shouting Treguna Mekoides Trecorum Satis Dee" you re doing it wrong. Yes I am the first to do this, yes I do this every time. Yes, they will ask you to leave.
Feel like a kid again as you re dwarfed by the T-Rex and the Blue Whale or just surrounded magically by butterflies. It s entertaining and educational. Use the side entrance to cut the line.
Some really like the cafe, I definitely prefer to leave the building and get food elsewhere. Never mind the food though, this is a museum and a fantastic one at that
Lots of exhibits here, but the star attraction for us were the Dinosaurs. Most museums exhibit bone casts, but here they are actual fossilized bones on display. Amazing to think these creatures roamed the earth.
