Amazing museum that you can spend hours in. Also, "pay what you want" as an entrance fee is awesome!!
This place is awesome. .. but very disappointed how they run it....at least 300 people on line for admission ticket and only 2 person on the ticket booth ...wondering who is in charge of here ..
The AMNH was one of the places I was most looking forward to visiting when our family planned a summer vacation to NYC, but this museum did not meet my expectations. The entry area was extremely crowded and purchasing tickets was a mess. I tried to buy our tickets at one of the automated kiosks, but the tickets failed to print and I had to visit with a cashier after waiting in another line to correct the issue. Several of the exhibit areas were without air conditioning and an upstairs restroom was out of order when we tried to use it. The cafeteria offers a nice variety of foods, but the prices are high. There are current exhibits that stand out among many that are dated, but the overall experience here is very lacking. Overall, our family did not find this attraction to be a good value.
A wonderful museum, unfortunately we couldn't see everything as it is so huuuuge (and interesting).
Great museum. Took 4 children. They loved dinosaur exhibits. Would take days to see all.
This is one of the best museums in the country. A full day spent here won't even get you 1/4 of the way through it. There's so many exhibits on everything from asteroids to human evolution to dinosaurs to space and everything in between. Spend hours walking through all the taxidermy dioramas of the various animals from around the world. Or if that isn't your thing, check out gallery after gallery of artifacts from the different peoples of the world. Traveling/rotating exhibits ensure that there's always something new to see. The current interactive exhibit on the human senses is loads of fun and the new one on the creatures of the ocean depths is beautiful.
Buy tickets online. Please note that you may have to wait in line for up to 90 minutes. If you really like museums, you will have to invest in several visits as this is huge and has sections that are renovated. In some places you see so many things that you get saturated. It is not very clear the succession of rooms, sometimes seem unconnected. Many times I didn't know if I was seeing something original or a model.
I don't know if seeing desiccated animals today is something so amazing and educational (you have internet!).
Beautiful museum, you can spend the whole day here. Staff was friendly and guides were very informative. The exhibits are outstanding and truly what one thinks a natural history museum should be. My only complaint is that there was no clear signage for a wheel chair ramp to gain access from the Central Park West entrance. It's there, but you have to go a ways off. No biggie.
This is amazing museum and a must see venue if you are in New York City. There are amazing exhibits, I particularly enjoyed the The Anne and Bernard Spitzer Hall ofHuman Origins and the Harry Frank Guggenheim Hall of Minerals. There are of course many other wonderful exhibits.
The museum itself is so large that if you really want to take your time looking at the exhibits you would have to spend the entire day there or come back again another day if you just want to take it in for a few hours at a time. One of the largest museums in the world, you will not regret your visit.
Amazing place! Totally worth see it! There are so many things that you have to have all day to see everything. And their app is also great thing! It leads you to exhibition you want to see. Perfect place!
Nothing like NY museums
Awesome
I visited this museum with my family. We had a great time and we had learnt so many things about thr earth, space and Past about the earth. my interesting part is Dinosaur. This is awesome. Must visit if you're in New York.
the museum of natural history is a good place to learn about ancient times and about history. ive learned a lot everytime ive gone there on class trips.you could learn alot of our past and how people in the old days lived. i recommend you to go to the museum of natural history.
Be ready for whole day to check out the world history, nature and evaluation!!
You have to go there, we spent all day walking around, so nice!! Recommended!!
In general the museum is a bit worn down, show rooms the information sparse and not kid friendly - a bit disappointed
Kids are excited though
Amazing place! It s like whole your history book got alive
This place is just phenomenal, I would suggest you park in the parking garage for the day and get there early . Where do I begin , I first had the opportunity to go and check out the massive planetarium it was so surreal. Since ,I went with family and friends we hit up most of the exhibits since there are 4 floors . I would suggest you get a map and plan accordingly and bring lunch you re going to need a break .They do have a coffee and gift shop available in the museum . Also a plus , Central Park is just across the street for an nice walk,Which we took on the 90 degree day & felt nice and breezy their was also a nice water spray park located there as well. Overall, this is a great place to bring your family whether you live in or out of state for a great educational experience or day trip ! :)
A world class natural history museum! The exhibits are generally well laid out and allow for a logical path through them (not too much backtracking to figure out what you missed). The various collections are impressively large and diverse (the minerals are a favorite of mine). The planetarium is pretty much state-of-the-art (thank you NDT!).
This place is enormous. Plan to spend at least 4 hours here if you want to see everything.
Entrance fee is pay-what-you-wish, the overpriced restaurants ($14 for a stale sandwich and a juice) and the fact that a few exhibits require an additional fee made me regret paying the suggested $23 ticket price.
Very well kept and huge. Special exhibitions are unique. Bit costly but worth it.
This place was really cool. Dinosaur exhibits were awesome.
Words Are literally not enough to describe the place. Such a spectacular mesume. Suggested ammount is accepted here. Just make sure that you come here early in the morning so that you have enough time to go as around.
Absolutely amazing experience with my wife! Everyone must visit!
As always I had a great time at the museum. I just wish the security guard that approached me about a ticket when I accidentally walked through the wrong side was a decent, professional, public service staff member. He was very rude, argumentative and Unprofessional. It s embarrassing to be in such a place of education and history and to be treated in such a manner in front of children and others is an absolute shame.
One of my most favorite museums in the world and one of the coolest spots in NYC. They have everything imaginable on display here, its a requirement to go here if you visit the city.
It's a great place to spend da day with the family and friends
Love this museum!!! So many cool exhibits. One of my favorite places to go...I never get bored of it I always have such a good time!!!
Wonderful place to learn about the history of life on Earth. Very informative.
It is always nice to be able to go such a beautiful museum like American Natural History Museum!!
A whole day can be easily spent looking at the past and wondering about the future. Lots of exhibits. Free tours available. The cafeteria has options for both kids and adults.
The dioramas are what bring a lot of people to this museum, and I can see why. They are beautiful. Plan on visiting for a full day, and arriving early. We walked into the museum about 1 hour after opening, waiting for only 10 minutes (and suggested our own price of admission), and spend several hours inside. We left around 3pm to see a long line just to enter the museum.
I can only give 4 stars, however, because the museum is difficult to navigate. The floors seemed to be split and there weren't many signs to help us out.
Overall, I had a great time here and will be back the next time I am in the area.
The best museum in nyc, American museum of natural history the parking garage has low rates
They close early 3 pm ocean life and earth and space
Everything here is gorgeous and unique. I particularly adored the butterfly conservatory. Nowhere else can you be surrounded by butterflies. Go and check out the Dark Universe at the planetarium. Wow.
Great museum, good value for money the extra shows are well worth going to. Takes a whole day to see everything
Best museum that i ever saw, it is unbelievable large and there is so much to see and explore, i didn't know such a large museum, it is very great and i think if you want to explore the whole museum, you will need 24/7
This place is just amazing.. Great place to learn about ancient cultures, extinct animals, space, fossils, etc and all great things! One day is just not enough to cover this place. They do have a food court in there. I still can't get over the T-rex skeleton
Great exhibit. You need a lot of time to see everything though. And by a lot I mean A LOT.
Very outdated and not kept up. The fossils are displayed nicely however every other exhibit looks like it was from the 70s. Wallpaper peeling, carpet ripped and several empty display cases.
Best deal you can paid whatever you think on general admision,4th floor its the best. Kida arengoing to learn having fun at the same time.
Huge museum, although im not a fan of all the stuffed animals, other parts of exposition made it interesting anyways. The cosmos and the earth parts were really good.
There are so many exhibits presented in an informative way. No matter how many times you go, there is always something new to experience.
Wonderful place not only for nature lovers. There's a fantastic collection of fossils, and of course small, medium and large animals.
Plan ahead for a whole day if you want to see "everything" this museum has to offer.
We paid fiver dollars each. That's not an issue. if you'd like to see the 4d showings then you have to pay the full price.
Lots to see so plan half a day if you want to go to everything.
Great if you like dinosaurs and rare earth minerals. The rest is ok. Not too happy about all the stuffed animals though.
In many exhibits (e.g. different civilization artifacts) there is no indication of time/age. Many exhibits are badly lit (or not at all) and could do with an update.
Museum is big so you need a whole day. Layout is a bit problematic since it appears that you need to backtrack a lot if you are going from one floor to the next. Also I found it a bit cheeky that the automatic ticket machines only have the "suggested" admission price and if you wish to pay anything less you need to talk to a member of the staff. Talking about a guilt trip.
All in all it was a positive experience. Would recommend.
As someone from a small European country, I found this museum absolutely breathtaking! It was truly unlike any other museum I ve ever been to. Very interesting expositions, the large amount of them and all the detail that was put into making each one is just stunning. The only issue I had was the lack of signs telling where are what expositions, restrooms, restaurant theatre etc. I almost missed a show I paid for because I didn t know where to go. However the staff was very friendly and eager to help. Overall it is an amazing place to visit, you could spend the entire day without getting bored and I d definitely recommend it to anyone who s planning to visit New York. If decide not to go, you ll seriously miss out on a lot!
Extensive collection. Recommend spending a whole day here.
The best museum in the world but unless you want to spend all day waiting in line buy your tickets online
We ve been there a couple of days ago, and as it is world wide known museum we were incredibly surprised how outdated and ruined down inside the museum. There were plenty of displays with had no lighting at all, therefore it was invisible for the audience, and the exhibition in the entire museum probably been done in the late 80 s and since then they haven t even touched it. The videos on displays are from those years as well, just as the displays. It was just a ridiculous experience and the price was way over the value... never again and won t recommend.
It was so so, this museum needs an urgent renewal, most of the things looks 80s.
Museum natural
My trip in 2012 is one of the beautiful places that you can visit in New York City
Amazing museum that is very educational and inspiring!
The only star I deducted is about the ticket system... there s no suggested price on the self-service express ticket machine, so if you do not want to pay $23 for one adult ticket, you can wait in line for getting a ticket with your donation price
A day is not enough to enjoy the entirety of this museum. Wonderful!
Great place to take the family. We did a scavenger hunt there and had lots of fun
My favorite museum in the country. Not enough time in the day to really take it all in. Come up with a game plan of priorities.
Best museum in NYC. Must see the life size whale...breathtaking!
Lots to see and even a few interactive exhibits to do. Well worth the visit
I'm not sure why they have to keep the place so dark. It's hard to see things. Fingerprints were all over the glass, yuck, I hate dirty fingerprints.
This review is not about the actual experience in the museum but the way they handle pre-booked tickets. We had tickets ordered and payed for online and printed at home. They would however not let us in, instead we had to get into another line for 15 min to get them exchanged for new tickets (after already waiting to get into the museum for about the same time). And of the counters, less than half were actually manned...
This is an absolutely retarded system, staff was unfriendly and not helpful, basically just telling us that this is the way it is and we can either accept it or leave ...
Spent the morning here and the kids had a great time exploring the museum. Wish we had more time to explore.
Great exhibits that span the natural and planetary sciences! Great for people of all ages. Plus Neil de Grasse Tyson!
Great collections and a fair app to help you get around, but some exhibits have just been left to almost fall apart.
We also had two large sections closed off for the afternoon while they were set up for a private dinner function, so we couldn't get to all of the museum.
Dude, this is my favorite museum in the world. You can stay here for hours, you will get tired and hungry. Cafeteria downstairs is ok, I recommend you having a hot dog outside since you are tourist in New York, you shouldn t being eating in the museum cafeteria. Go grab a pretzel. This museum is amazing, start from top to bottom, best is 5 and 2 floor. Oh, you don t have to pay full price, you pay what you want. Even one cent. This museum is from the world to the world. Keep in mind it cost $20+ per person to run it.
This museum is really cool. There are lots of displays which are really well done. You learn, see and experience animals, people etc.
I didn't like the layout, we missed a bunch of exhibits because there isn't one or two paths, there are tons and no signs. So it was frustrating to go from one exhibit to the next since it was more of a walk until you stumble across the next. It made it more stressful than relaxing and there are hardly any employees around to ask how to get to a specific exhibit, or even the next one.
So it is really cool, but hard to navigate.
Excellent museum new section about earth and climate change a must see. Do not miss 4 floor. Food wxcellent quality at good price. Family oriented
Incredible place, such an amazing experience, but be careful about the time, it can take some hours of your day, so leave a couple of hours free to enjoy the full experience!
Great Natural history museum with everything from dinosaur fossils to meteorites. Spent a good couple hours walking around. Great exhibits.
This was my second visit with my kids. We got to see everything we missed last time. There is so much to see and so much to learn. Great for the entire family!!!
Have literally called about 20 times today Trying to get through to someone. 6 different people have picked up and always put me on hold then hang up. I am trying to simply purchase tickets and am having a terrible experience. I even tried to go online to purchase tickets and the system keeps saying I'm scheduling more than two exhibitions within an hour of eachother when each time I select is an hour apart each. Terrible terrible customer service
Always a great place to visit, can't see it all in a day
Absolutely loved this place. We entered through the Hayden Planetarium and were astonished at the exhibits, specially the ones about the Big Bang and the rocks. We then found the dinosaur exhibit and went bananas! If possible, also catch one of the shows. We saw the one about Dark Matter narrated by everyone's favorite rockstar scientist, Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Kids fall asleep and the adults stay quiet. Win-win
"Night at the museum" was based on this museum! Dum dum is here. That's it! No a lot of things from the movie is at there, cuz most of characters are made up. However, if you're a fan of museum, you might like it.
What a great museum. You can spend hours and hours and not finish the whole thing. Nice thing is if you pay at the museum and not online you can pay what you want(suggested price is $23 per person) if you are only doing the main exhibits. A family of 6 beside me paid $5 each. So great place to spend a day if outside weather is not cooperating with your plans or if you really love museums.
Loved it. Great family day out up through central park to museum. Friendly staff.
This is an extraordinary museum that tells a story of our history; from the universe to our planet Earth, from the rocks beneath our crust to the dense forests, from the evolution of man to the rich diversity of fauna. This museum is truly spectacular and merits as much time as you can afford.
The Dark Universe Exhibition was too short. Other than that , I enjoyed my experience.
Beautiful fossils and gem stones. Lighting is very outdated in everything EXCEPT the dinosaur exhibit. Gemstone lighting and displays were unbecoming and VERY outdated.
Set aside a few hours for exploration of this huge museum located in Manhattan's Upper West Side. There is so much to see and do! The whole family will enjoy. In fact, this museum is so large, that it requires multiple visits to take in all it has to offer. There is a suggested donation for museum entrance making it an affordable option for families. If the kids like animals, science and history...then they must visit. There is also a Planetarium with great shows (there is an additional expense for special programs). Bring some $ if you plan to eat at their cafe which offers a bunch of kids favorites like hamburgers, fries, pizza and pasta. Additionally, they offer lighter fare i.e. salads and soup. Great desserts: Jello, pudding, cakes and so much more! The pricing of their food is moderate. If you are a family visiting NYC make this a must see destination, but plan for it being an all day event!
We could not find the map so we where just left wondering. But everything was REALLY cool!
I bring my son here couple of times a year, he loves it
WOW. Seriously. This place is so worth a visit! It's huge, and there is so much to see. Highly recommended.
I was impressed by the beautiful exhibits of animals from all around the world. And the sheer size of the museum, plan your visits as there is allot to see. Most exhibits are static though, so some kids may not enjoy the museum much.
Most exhibits seemed quite old and dated. Many halls are so dimly lit you can hardly read the information given. Most exhibits are artefacts, replicas, or dioramas followed by a wall of text or an old vhs-quality video. Many exhibits had lightbulbs that had blown making it impossible to see inside. Dinosaur exhibits were one of the only redeeming qualities. At $23USD admission it seemed quite steep for the quality of the museum, quite overrated.
Learn is so important and the history of our world is important.
Outstanding. One of the best museums in the world. Can't see it all in one day.
A great natural history museum. Some of the exhibits looked surprisingly a little tired and dated, but others such as the dinosaurs were great.
