Really neat and well-designed museum. My only issues were that the flow wasn't always good, so you had to back track to get through all the different areas of the exhibits. Also there were screaming children everywhere. Other than that, a really interesting museum.

No idea how anyone can give this less than 5*. Fees are 'voluntary' so if you're hard pressed for cash you can still enjoy the facilities. If we turn up late we'll pay half the suggested entrance fee for example. The last hour of the day is free.

There are exhibits showing nature from all continents as well as human's interactions and evolution with it. Huge dinosaur skeletons, lifesize whale exhibit, a video show, many stuff animals.

We had a great time and look forward to exploring more. We spent 4 hours and only got through two floors. Wish we had more time, but it gives us a reason to come back. I now know why people would just go and have lunch or a break because not only are you surrounded by history the views are also calming.

Good expositions of fossils however staff is not nice and is really disorganized building.

No signs for nothing, not even for the toilet.

I just got in the 4th floor from the 2nd floor where I bought the ticket, to see the mummies and I was told that I need to go back to 2nd floor to buy an extra ticket. This museum is so bad. I'm really disappointed.

Please go to London or Berlin and learn more about museums.

It s ok.

It s ok.

The wait to get in was a bit ridiculous. 8-9 attendants waiting on customers, but really only three were working. Three chatting while they ve got a massive line out the door, immediately unforgivable.

T.Rex exhibit closed. Navigating around it was confusing.

They had a sea exhibit with a giant whale that we wanted to check out, but couldn t, because it was closed for a private event that evening. It was 3:30pm, they had plenty of time to setup later.

Two stars instead of one because the Titanosaur, was pretty cool.

I am going to copy one of the other guest review, as its exactly how it is. But, I am giving it 2 star for the unfriendly staff. "It is dated, dusty and overpriced. Most exhibits have not been updated since 70. The map is non-interactive, so it is not always easy to figure out where to go next and how to get there. The video they show in planetarium is not property adjusted for the curvature of the projection dome so everything looks distorted. Cafeteria is dirty, pricey and does not have any healthy choices. It is museum of the museum - it shows you how museums used to look and function before computers were introduced. The collection of the dinosaur bones is pretty good."

Amazing museum. There are plenty to see. I had to come back for a second time. Just like many people wrote, you really should get here when it opens and expect to explore the museum exhibits until it closes and hope you've seen everything.
Trully a marvelous place. Highly highly recommended.

I love this museum! Especially the dinosaurs. No matter how old I am their collections never cease to amaze me! They have other things as well such as the human anatomy, gemstone collections, animal models from around the globe, and marine collections. The staffs are plenty helpful and they manage the CDC guideline for this pandemic well. In order to visit, you have to book your visit online. If you're from NY, NJ and PA you get to pay as you wish given that you bring prove of address with you (state ID/driver's license/electricity bills/library card). One ID card is applicable for a party of 3.

Loved the variety in the museum. The $22 per head suggested is a bit steep.. While you can go in for free recommend contributing at least something - some sections are definitely showing their age.
My toddler liked the elephants in Asian and African section but that was about it. Older kids would do much better.
Check for coupons for discounted parking beforehand you'll need to present before hand.

Very nice place to learn more about Natural History. I have seen the giant blue wale in a spider man comic and then there. Or even the Night at the Museum movie. Very nice place to be and to advise.

Wonderful place! So much to see and experience. However, make to allow yourself half a day to do and see it all.

ALSO, the "pay what you want" feature is ONLY available at the ticket stand. They'll tell you you can purchase the tickets online or at a kiosk, but the "pay what you want" feature is literally ONLY at the ticket counter. Slightly longer line, but better than paying $50 for two ppl.

Two kids 7 & 12 both loved this museum. We spent hours there and never once did they complain. Also, the cost is a "suggested donation" so don't be fooled into paying more than you are comfortable with.

Wow! What a great place this is must I say. Started off by coming in to an enormous room with gigantic towering pillars which are some greatly impressive architecture. Came in thinking this would be a quick walk through with some detailed models to looks at and fossils, however I was greatly wrong... I could ve spent the whole day in there with the amount of depth in explanation for each display in there. I found myself in there for at least 3 hours and merely scraped the surface of all the information in there and failed to visit all of the floors. The food court was a tasty experience and the prices were slightly high however that is to be expected in New York. Would recommend to everyone and it s very possible to spend a whole day exploring in there. God bless America.

A great place to visit in New York. A single day is not enough to explore the museum since it is really huge and is a storehouse of knowledge. One can learn about the theory of evolution, animals, their habitats etc. It's the perfect place to bring students as it provides immense knowledge through life sized models, equipments, sculptures etc. One can find a variety of manuscripts here. The museum also has interactive exhibits which attract a lot of young explorers. This place is often visited by families. One definitely has to visit this place twice or thrice to get the most out of it. If you are a history buff, do visit this place! It's phenomenal.

AMNH is probably the best museum in the United States (I've been to all in the DC, NYC, and Philadelphia areas). It really does live up to it's reputation. On Saturdays, they offer admission by donation; however, I would recommend visiting during the week if you are able (even if it means taking a day off from work) and paying for full-access because the crowd level is significantly lower and the special exhibits are always worth the cost. The gift shop is reasonably priced and the cafeteria (which is probably not open in 2020) is a bit pricey but since there aren't many places to eat in the area, it might be the most affordable option around.
Must see: Dinosaurs on the 4th floor and the various Halls of Peoples on the 2nd floor.

I spent 2 visits in order to just browse through the different exhibits and I had no time to really read the information on each. I would really like to have spent a few full days to go through everything. Most of the exhibits were great. Major downfall is navigating the map. It was really hard to find where you want to go and specific exhibits so the best strategy is to wander each floor until you have seen everything. There were also a lot of parents taking young children and why they take toddlers still in pushcarts there is beyond me. I went on a Friday and Saturday and it was packed. General admission is by donation but there were a few exhibits that cost from 10-30 dollars if you want the full experience.

Incredible museum. But do NOT buy your ticket on line! You will still have to stand in the long line with everyone else buying tickets. The ticket vendor "Viator" does not send you a scanable ticket, only a sort of receipt that has to be exchanged for a real ticket at the box office. Very annoying.

It was a very unpleasant experience. The museum was really crowded and we spent most of the time waiting on line to get in and for elevators. The staff were not very present and rude. The food court was overpriced. The exhibits seemed nice but were hard to enjoy because we were wrestling with a myriad of other irate visitors. Imagine if there was an emergency. Management needs to get its act together to logistically deal with peak periods so that the reputation of this museum doesn't become tarnished.

Horrific time! It was 50 degrees outside and 90 degrees inside. Might have been because they let so many people in that you could not enjoy the exhibits. Had to be violating fire code. Would've been serious problem if there was an emergency evacuation. I thought it would be better than one in DC but nothing in comparison. Metropolitan Museum MUCH BETTER!!

This is a great place to take kids who are a little older (7+) who will actually enjoy seeing certain exhibits. However, this museum is very crowded and it is not mapped out in the best way. So you will most likely bump into people or be in very crowded spaces. Especially in the dinosaurs exhibit, since it is very popular it is the most crowded. You will often see the line to go through security go around the building so arrive early. This is also a museum that you can see in two days because of how large it is.

Maybe we are spoilt for museums in Europe, but I thought this was a really out-dated overpriced museum that is full of dusty old exhibits and no interactive, fun or engaging displays. Furthermore, they charge extra for the seemingly newer or interactive exhibits... Quite a rip off. Would not recommend, sorry.

The dioramas on the first floor (the North American animals) were really impressive and the panels on both side of each diorama were informative and educational. The same couldn't be said about the displays on the second floor. Some of the lights were even broken.
The special exhibition I went was 'the wonders of the arctic', and I enjoyed the viewing.
With minimal directional signs we got lost a couple of times in the museum.

I want to thank the American Museum of Natural History for the placement of the sign "Some scientists predict that human impact on the environment could cause the extinction of half of the world's species in the next 100 years", this is a subject that should be spoken of openly and is too often hidden from view by the media and governments. Bravo to you!

I ve been to museums all over the world with our f...

I ve been to museums all over the world with our family and this was our worst experience. We came there shortly before 11am on Monday. They closed main entrance and we were essentially last in line for really long line outdoors waiting to get through security check. It was mid 30 s and since we lived few blocks from museum and were not dressed super warm - the wait outside was not fun. Then once we got inside - there was a very very long line to ticket counters. The only way to pay as you wish is to wait for three agents processing very very long line (few others were taking care of Citypass and other customers). Several kiosks or online checking would not allow you pay as you wish option. By 12:30pm we were finally inside the museum. Then came crowds and lines everywhere. I think the museum should be appropriately named zoo. Two small cafeterias with huge lines and nowhere to sit. Security guards seemingly randomly making people who stopped in a corner out of everyone s way to take a break move. Narrow exhibit hallways moving at glacial pace because people can t get past each other. Slow moving elevators not optimized for crowds (think lobby full of people waiting but only one elevator running at a time).

The museum itself - especially dinausar exhibit - is actually quite decent BUT the overall experience was excruciating!
