I always come to the museum but this year my cousin came in to town and my family and I went. We were in the painting area and the security guard wouldn t even let us read the description he kept telling us to back away. I felt like we were getting discriminated. I don t think I m ever going back their ever again.
Simply amazing. A must do attraction in NYC. Reserve the day to attempt to see everything, one day may not be enough if there is way too long of an interest for one area. Buy all special expositions. They are worth the money. The space and dinossaur exhibits were unbelievable.
Very informative, large collection, took hours to walk around the whole place.
However a few exhibits were paid entry on top of the museums entry fee.
Would definitely go back though as its a wonderful day out.
A not too bad museum, our hopes were up too high after having seen 'Night at the museum' maybe. Lots and lots of animals and even more interesting objects on display. Too busy to see everything.
I remember this being one of my favorite places to spend time as a kid in NYC. The museum has a couple of distinct personalities. The exhibits on human culture (and there are a lot of them) will probably feel pretty dated in light of the amount of information available at kids fingertips these days. Honestly, I thought they would have updated them a little in the last 25 years. The dinosaur exhibits were impressive as always, and the planetarium screening was fun, if not a little short.
I went this time on a trip with my fiance. Maybe it was just more exciting as a kid. Really fun from a nostalgia point, but could use some fresh shine.
a MUST if you go to NYC, you can't leave NYC if you didn't visited. Ask for a Pay what you want entry, check if that option is avaliable the thay you visit and you can enter paying 1 .
Love this museum!!! So many cool exhibits. One of my favorite places to go...I never get bored of it I always have such a good time!!!
I spent every moment possible as a child at this museum. I would say for any age that the AMNH is a treasure and a delight to explore.
If I were to make one recommendation for something secret to find...on the fourth floor, in the aquatic fossil room there is a fossil of a "fish" which had a set of spiral teeth which might have cut up food like a garbage disposal. Super weird, see if you can find it!
Like most kids who grew up in New York City, I've always remembered this institution as the place with the giant blue whale and all the dinosaur fossils! Their special exhibits are usually a lot of fun (e.g. Brain: The Inside Story and Mythic Creatures). My favorite permanent exhibit is the "Hall of Human Origins."
Awsome to know different animals and know about the peoples around the world
The Museum and exhibits itself were great however the customer service was horrendous. On December 19 at approximately 3:30pm we came in for the first time and did not know where to buy tickets. The guy at one of the tables laughed and mocked us with another co-worker for asking twice where to buy tickets because we did not understand him the first time. When we did go to buy tickets the women at another table acted as if we were a nuisance for asking questions about times for shows. All she said was "you came to late you won't make it". She didn't even bother to let us know the times for another day. All she cared about was rushing us along and rolled her eyes everytime we asked a simple question about times for a certain show. I can understand if they were busy but there was absolutely no one behind us and we just wanted to ask for future reference. Again the actual walk through exhibits were great however the customer service really ruined it for us.
Insanely overcrowded. Restaurants were very overpriced for unhealthy/low quality food.
I had a fantastic time, it was affordable and the exhibits were so well laid out that it was fun just marvelling at the rooms. Highly recommend for anybody.
I am giving 4 stars, and not 5 stars, because I believe that, with all thousands of visitors it gets every years, it deserves to be modernized, revamped. The Neil deGrasse Tyson dark exibition from space is the highlight by far. If we had more of that, and more that connects to the Night in The Museum movies (interactive stuff), it would deserve my 5 stars.
Pick a bad weather day and try to avoid the weekends or holidays if you don't like crowds. Don't skimp on time and meander through all the floors for a fairly unforgettable experience even better if you can find a docent d=(^o^)=b
Awesome experience!!! The museum is huge so make sure you wear comfortable shoes and get there early so you can have enough time to see everything.
The museum is vast with a ton of exhibits. Their displays cover everything from geology to anthropology. I had a wonderful time exploring the museum during a busy afternoon. The building is clean and well maintained. Great way to spend an afternoon.
The exhibition look fresh
The lines to get in move well
Enjoyed bringing a new generation to the museum
If waiting in lines and dealing with noisy school groups and unhelpful staff is your thing this is a great day out.
If not, go elsewhere.
Get there early enough you ll get 15 minutes of peace to enjoy the exhibitions.
It was an amazing experience with this museum. I found a lot of awesome things. But the most mind blowing is the remains of dinosaurs and i feel like an animation movie. All those was like a short film whose episodes are the different ages that included millions of years. If you got a chance to visit this place you should never miss this because......you will feel it after you visit this place.........
Out of this world! I've been coming here for decades. Now, I bring my boys.
What can I say, of course it's great, but it as sad as it is great :( , you have to see it, but, be ready, you will be in the middle of dead nature, so sad
I guess a lot of people really like the museum, out of nostalgia, or from the movies or... the collection of dinosaurs, which is quite impressive to be honest. But otherwise, I would not recommend a visit at all. It's very crowded, you get lost all the time and it just feels like you're walking around in your grandma's attic. Any national geographic video beats the part with the stuffed animals in the museum. It's all very outdated and not appealing to the visitor. When you've visited 9/11 or Moma or Tenement museum, you will probably feel the same way afterwards.
Unfriendly and unkind staff. The lack of information how to get oriented in this huge building.
The way of presenting the information is extremely old-fashioned. Nothing exciting.
The place I would totally recommend to be in if you're a tourist looking for something interesting!
NJ and NY residents get in for free or can choose to donate any amount to get in. I arrived at 1pm on a Sunday and left at 520 when they where closing. Within that time I didn t have the time to see everything. I definitely recommend to go earlier and plan on spending the whole day there. Don t forget to bring water and a snack because the cafes are closed.
Focused on the human condition, dinos and everything else.
It's an place to get to know the history of the planet and space. You need one whole day to see the entire place.
If you go here on a city pass, please make sure to spend a day over here.
Had a fun time walking around in the museum. Make sure to make reservations because it gets really busy here. Definitely a place to check out if you are on NYC. The food inside is a bit pricey so I suggest you eat before going in!
Like most kids who grew up in New York City, I've always remembered this institution as the place with the giant blue whale and all the dinosaur fossils! Their special exhibits are usually a lot of fun (e.g. Brain: The Inside Story and Mythic Creatures). My favorite permanent exhibit is the "Hall of Human Origins."
a crush orange bottle is 5 bucks but the museum was great
One of the must visit places in NYC! Lots of different exhibitions like Dinosaurs + the planetarium! Visit the place where they filmed Night at the Museum!
Incredibly large, only ever saw 25 percent of it, but it was amazing, great things on display and great exhibitions
Extensive collection of dinosaur skeletons and taxidermy animals from around the world!!!
You can learn a lot and see a lot of interesting things, but the food court is an absolute disgrace. Incredibly overpriced and subpar quality. You can pick up better food at any corner vendor for a third of the price and be happier. Yes, it is a history museum first. But food matters when you re in a place this big (you could spend the whole weekend here and probably not see everything). So bear that in mind when planning your visit, especially if you re providing for more than just yourself. Many of the exhibits are caked in dust and don t appear to be tended to very frequently. To be frank, a lot of them look seriously outdated and forgotten about. No clear signage or direction on where to find restrooms and navigating the place in general is like finding your way through a labyrinth for the first time. It s nice enough, and you should visit it at least once for the experience of it, but whatever you do don t bother with the food court, and keep your expectations toned.
We came in the afternoon and even though they close at 17:45 they start to close exhibitions and areas around 16 o'clock. Not information about this when we bought the tickets 15:30 so it feels like a rip off.
Most of the exbhits were closed for renovations...... and the special exhibits are not what you expect for the amount of money that is paid. The museum is also very stuffy and is not organized well. Other than the space section of the museum the rest is not that great.
The planetarium is amazing, and the place is huge. The dinosaur exhibit is obviously cool, as is the butterfly one. Make sure to come at a time when it isn't too crowded for a better experience... Definitely worth visiting if you're in NYC.
They have enough to look at for days. The planetarium staff is really sassy, but other than that service was a breeze. Highly recommend to the casual historian to the natural Indiana Jones.
One of my top locations in NYC. We come here at least 10-20x a year. C-train to 81st street. Take your time, do the audio tour, enjoy.
Great museum to bring kids Really an amazing collection of all the animals on Earth including prehistoric ones. Planetarium section is very nice, extremely informative one of my favorite is the mineral exhibit. Has pretty much every mineral on Earth also real meteors to touch that have been traveling through space.
One of the best museums in the world, covers a great variety of topics in great depth. Suitable for adults and/or kids. Good events and attractions regularly.
Sometimes I'll come here just to relax to the ocean sounds under the blue whale. The dioramas are amazing (there's even a book about them); be sure not to miss the one of the giant squid fighting a whale.
It's harder to get around on rainy days when everyone's looking for indoor activities, so for a calmer visit try when everyone's in the park or walking around shopping. Shake Shack is also nearby for tasty treats.
My daughter had a Great experience...security was very respectful...Thanks to Perry Pointer of the security staff for being so helpful
Other than being EXTREMELY crowded, this place feels endless! There's so much to see, and if you're interested in any of it, expect to stay there all day to see everything. We had 2 hours to kill and barely made a dent in the exhibits. Can't wait to go back to see the rest!
The line up to the museum was very awkward (inside the metro station). It's a pay by donation entry. It's too bad we didn't get to see the dinosaur but we saw the gigantic blue whale which was equally amazing.
This is a great museum located in NYC! You can get lost just seeing all of the amazing things that are put on display. It has 4 floors that cover everything from local history to international history to even exhibits in relation to space. I'd wholeheartedly recommend it!
Long line to get in. Difficult to move around because of odd floorplan, especially the planetarium section. Elevators in planetarium are marked as staff only, but are actually open to the public. Escalators go down, but not up, which is weird since going up is where they would be more useful.
Some of the exhibits are haphazard, not well organized, and text is often very general. The exhibits, most of which are not disclosed as replicas, are visually appealing, which may appeal to the masses, but not that educational.
Lots of walking, with almost nowhere to sit and rest.
Gift shops almost everywhere.
No volunteer docents, which seems odd given the population of NYC.
Simple ideas, like the exhibit on planetary scales, should be smaller but are more than a thousand feet long requiring you to walk a long distance to read a few dozen placards that could all fit on a single webpage. The sphere/movie theater is used as a reference for scales even though it is too large to see fully from anywhere in the scale exhibit.
Lots of repetition in the Big Bang walkway exhibit, which also requires a lot of walking to read a small number of placards containing generalities that could fit on a web page.
For some reason, the meteorites are divided into two entirely separate areas.
Planetarium movies inaccurately portray sound in outer space and are mostly computer animation, rather than real images of space.
Museum app is buggy and wont provide useful info about location of exhibits unless you connect to wifi AND accept terms using web browser, which app never tells you is needed. Even then, app showed my location on a map correctly, but denied that it knew where I was via an annoying popup and refused to tell me how to find any of the list od suggested exhibits, or to even tell me what floor they were on or to link to a map.
This Museum is mostly entertainment and commercialism, not education.
This place is a Pandora's box, so much to see here. You can easily spend an entire day. Please note the entry fee here is whatever you wish to pay
A great place to spend the day. Stand under the whale. Avoid going in the morning when there are school field trips. Great mosaics in subway station!
We ve been there a couple of days ago, and as it is world wide known museum we were incredibly surprised how outdated and ruined down inside the museum. There were plenty of displays with had no lighting at all, therefore it was invisible for the audience, and the exhibition in the entire museum probably been done in the late 80 s and since then they haven t even touched it. The videos on displays are from those years as well, just as the displays. It was just a ridiculous experience and the price was way over the value... never again and won t recommend.
It is the greatest Background from a Movie on the planet and It is the Most beautifullest museum in the history of musia
Awwwwsome place .....you need a whole day to spend here ..it is a very big place .before its opening people stand in line and the line is very long So try to come sharp at 10am then you will have plenty of time to spend and see everything.food court is very good have good food options. Take tickets of all the special exhibitions then it is more fun
Long lines, no signs on who is amitted on what entrances; security staff is poorly trained on educating tourist. Took us 1 hr to get in with a stroller after being sent to multiple locations for tickets. Bathrooms and drinking fountain are limited and some out of service.
Exhibits (5 stars)
Tourist customer service (1 star)
No sense of direction and no one to help, just employees with attitude
Exquisite restrooms, great food, top notch dino merch!
Great museum for kids & adults :)
If you can't see it all, don't miss the African mammals & Saurischian dinosaurs.
Loved it, spend a whole day in it and still couldn t finish
the museum complex comprises 28 interconnected buildings housing 45 permanent exhibition halls, in addition to a planetarium and a library. The museum collections contain over 33 million specimens of plants, animals, fossils, minerals, rocks, meteorites, human remains, and human cultural artifacts, of which only a small fraction can be displayed at any given time, and occupies more than 2,000,000 square feet (190,000 m2). The museum has a full-time scientific staff of 225, sponsors over 120 special field expeditions each year, and averages about five million visits annually.Such a collection of the entire world in one place ... one visit is never enough .. u need to spend there a minimum of one full day or even 2 ... u feel like a little kid so excited to see history of humanity and dinosaurs and animals and galaxies and stars ... a must to visit place and take ur kids
The best museum I have ever been to. It takes 6 hours to visit all showrooms of basic ticket and watch the movie in planetarium. It was great experience.
Great place for kids - stuffed animals and dinosaur sections are my suggestions (skip the rest unless you have teenagers).
I have been here in the past but today was a terrible service day. Stood in line when we had a pass even thought we asked twice. Exhibits closed all over the place. Lack of signage to get to places. Bathroom dirty and in general terrible customer service.
The Dark Universe was great.
Love this museum. Tip: Do not buy the tickets off Google. You will be tempted to click on "buy tickets" when you Google the museum. The tickets are bought through Viator (not the museum) and you won't find out until you get a confirmation email. This means that when you get into the museum, you have to make ANOTHER line (I was going to stand in line to close to an hour) for that email confirmation to be transferred into an actual museum ticket. Buy the ticket ahead of time through the Museum's website and/or their on-site vending machine. That will save you an hour+ of your time!
Very nice and big museum. Many things to see, read, get to know and also learn. Dinosaur fossil collection is amazing and planetarium screening is fun. The museum is nicely organized. You need some time to go through it. I recommend that you take at least three to four hours for visit this place. Is definitely worth it.
Had such a fun time walking through this museum. Was very interesting and great place to go during the extreme heat in July.
Not as fancy looking as the metropolitan museum and yet not less interesting and amazing. A lot of knowledge, original historical items, mummies and what not. I'll go there again for sure. You can pay whatever you like for general admission and if you wanna see the special things like actual body parts of original mummies etc then you pay about $30.
Loved it!
I could have spent days here! If I was a local, I would absolutely be a member.
It was tough to decide what to dive into given the 3 hours we had they day, but I enjoyed everything I saw. The giant blue whale dominated the ocean exhibit, where we passed our first well-spent hour. Our favorite part of that was the deep-sea panels.
We bounced around a bit before landing in the dinosaur exhibit, where we spent the rest of our time. My favorite part about that? The disclaimers that were posted clearly staying the difference between what was known, what the facts strongly supported, what was guessed, and what simply could not be known. Good job with that!
Passed by today; haven't been inside for about 25 years, but a worthwhile visit nevertheless
Clean, well done displays, there is something for all of you if you are ready to learn and explore. I loved my visit, especially with the gems/stones. Many photo opportunities!
Really cool and interesting for all ages. Can spend as much or as little time there as you want. There is often enough to see without paying for the extra exhibits.
Its beautiful place to see especially for kids .and people culture from all over the world.amazing
It was really fun and really nice to see dinosaur bones there...
I love this museum. I was born in New York, and used to come here often as a child. I live in Ft. Lauderdale, FL now, and we don't have museums like this there. I was excited to return after so many years, with my son. We both enjoyed ourselves, but we didn't get to see everything. The museum is huge, and would take a long time to see everything. I can't wait to bring him back.
Amazing, so much to see and a lot area to cover. There are a lot of shows and exhibits that cost extra when you get in so be aware and plan ahead of time.
love this mesuem since i was a child. the whale exhbit is good and check out the dinsours while your at it
Place is great, we are members, but parking check out is horrible. Please set up a machine or add more people on the parking check out! Had to extend the rental only because the line was taking too long!
First off was an experience that everyone will have to experience. But very crowded, buy a lot of the animals that were on display was animals that we see in everyday life i was a little disappointed but the dinasors exhibits were really cool.
So much to see in this museum, I love how big and endless it gets wondering around looking all the amazing monument and skeleton of dinosaurs.
This museum is big but I find that a bit hard to navigate. I used their iPhone app to find my way on each floor. It appears that LL, level 1 & 2 all have entrances and ticket sales and museum shops. It's a bit confusing for someone who came up from LL to see another ticket sales booth and to accidentally exited the museum.
Other than the layout, the exhibitions are very good, especially the ones about the universe. I find the animal exhibitions just okay apart from their giant structures. They look like they could use some updating.
I used my corporate membership (which you have to get from another booth rather than the ticket sales) but you don't have to pay the full suggested price. I don't think $25 is the right amount you should pay when you arrive there at 3pm or when you can only spend an hour or two there.
Must visit if you have seen the movie night at the museum.
I loved it. The museum is very big so either take an entire day or come back twice.
The special expositions are not all equals l saw five of them and while 2 were really mind blowing, the other three were not that special.
The permanent exposition are really well explained, there are plenty of things to learn.
Besides the building itself is very beautiful you can even enjoy a really nice view over central park.
Great museum which is spectacularly curated. I especially liked the physical science exhibits.
A little stuffy in most corridors but what can u do....needless to say there's a few relics from the famous movie.....we had fun.
Very good and world-class museum on wide range of topics. Dinosaurs section is a must visit. Kids should find it interesting as well as informative. One can be deducted for not having enough stewards to guide visitors within the building. Also, food in the cafeteria is a bit expensive.
Dinosaur and space exhibits are a lot of fun. Good luck seeing everything in one day. This place is massive. Choose a few sections you'd like to visit and skip the rest.
Just recently went with a colleague and it was just phenomenal! SO much to see, even with all the COVID restrictions! Definitely a staple in the city. You will not regret it!!!
I love this museum. You can stay here for a day and do not see the half of it.
Amazing. Anything and everything you could think of seeing you will see
Comparable to where it rivals the Smithsonian, it also hold a dear place to me for it's massive collection. Most certainly a place you must visit when going to New York.
A great museum with an expansion collection. Highly recommend it to family or adults. Come during the week if possible to avoid crowds.
Perfect for a day out! We spent 6 hours here and we still didn't get to see everything! I would highly recommend going to see the shows that they do during the day. The space show was the best one out of all 3 definitely worth the extra price. The only thing I would recommend is to bring a jacket as it is really cold in the museum.
Wow!! Breathtaking museum. Huge. I wish I had a whole week just to visit this museum. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and kind, but unfortunately as it was the last tour (4.15) the other employees were constantly kicking us out of the exhibitions.
I'm definitely coming back another day for a longer visit!!
I really loved the museum. It was easy enough for us to get as the subway is near by. Beware this place took us all day to go around. But we loved spending the day here.
