Fairly out of date exhibits and a winding exhibit path that dead ends you in weird places and doesn't connect with a logical flow. The most interesting exhibits are temporary and require additional ticket purchases meaning a family visit can be quite expensive. Admission is free in the evening, but many exhibits/shows conclude by then. Pop by in the evening before dinner to see some dinosaur bones or scope out the museum shop for gifts, but you will see better quality (and spaces out) exhibits in Washington DC or across the park at the Met.

Wow! What a great place this is must I say. Started off by coming in to an enormous room with gigantic towering pillars which are some greatly impressive architecture. Came in thinking this would be a quick walk through with a some models to looks at and fossils however I was greatly wrong, I could ve spent the whole day in there with the greatly in depth explanation for each piece of history in there. Was in there for at least 3 hours and merely scraped the surface of information in there and failed to visit all floors. The food court was a tasty experience and the prices were slightly high however that is to be expected in New York. Would recommend to everyone and it s very possible to spend a whole day exploring in there. God bless America.

Absolutely extraordinary museum. I could wander there for days. The display on the evolution of wolves and dogs was amazing. Kwakiutl totem poles were also amazing. The planetarium program was the best I ve seen. I m eager to come back.

The museum is pretty big and has a lot of exhibits. It may seem slow if you don't like to read anything at the exhibits. I would definitely catch one of the special exhibits they have there (one of the "movies").

Excellent and huge museum. The Dark Universe show was amazing. We went with small children and that place is too big and with a lot of stairs for them. They enjoyed but get tired very quickly.

I first introduced to to the Museum of Natural History as a child on school trips. I loved this place from the start. Every time I go, it reminds me just how vast and varied the world is. Offers a great sense of perspective.

AMAZING! The lady at the front was so friendly but she warned us it would take 2 days to see everything and she was right. We only had a few hours to kill before heading to the airport and even though we flew through several exhibits it was still totally worth it and we will be planning a return trip with more time! Also you really can pay what you want and they don t try to pressure you or make you feel bad. This museum is a must!

We did not get in despite having a City Pass each. It would be good if one could use the electronic check in machines with City Pass. We were told to wait in the same line as everyone else which would have taken around 2 hours in which time we would have had to leave so we had to pass.

Amazing!

Amazing!
I need to go back again, one day is not enough to visit the whole museum.

My wife and myself absolutely loved it here, kudos to the staff for the upkeep. The overall appearance inside of the museum was also very realistic inside of the displays. We can t wait to come back again someday and enjoy it all over again. We would need a day or two to fully explore this magnificent place!

Museum is great, nothing bad to say yet the so call "valet", that I didn't choose, was a horrible experience. First the valet guy was watching his phone and didn't care that we were walking around looking for somebody to bring our car until I asked for help, he was rude and kept telling us that he had our car keys, meanwhile my husband found our car and the keys were on top of the tire. What kind of valet was that. Really bad service. Just be careful, anybody could get your keys and take your car. They don't take care of the keys like they say. All the keys are on top of the tires.

It's a pretty impressive museum, but I'd suggest paying very little to enter (they don't have a required amount but suggest $23) because you'll have to pay to see the best exhibits like the T rex.

2 people at the ticket sale so the queue does not move at all. Eventhough you have a city pass you have to wait this line (does not make sence at all, I already have the ticket ffs). This cas ruinw the whole experience

Really nice museum, maybe too big to be seen in a day.
What id recommend you to do is to is just focus on what you really like, say you like animals, you can spend the whole day viewing the hundreds of skeletons, stuffed animals...
There is no admission fee, it is a donation that you make, recommended is twenty dollars, so its up to you!
Getting there is a breeze, metro stop is in the museum!

Definitely the classic museum experience. That's not museum, halls are a bit dated but a lot of the exhibitions and dioramas are timeless. Definitely I must see for anybody who's into science or natural history.

The museum is an incredible place to spend time and travel through history. It has a vast amount of artifacts, fossils and different pieces of history from both earth and space. Give it a go, it's money well invested.

Very informative, large collection, took hours to walk around the whole place.

However a few exhibits were paid entry on top of the museums entry fee.

Would definitely go back though as its a wonderful day out.

It's really expensive here. I'm a student and it cost $20 to look at the mummies, but the other exhibits didn't cost extra. There are lots of children here. This museum is great because everything has great descriptions to read. Come here soon because the mineral exhibit will be packed up in a few months so that it can be renovated.

Wonderful museum located across from Central Park. Fantastic exhibits to see throughout the museum. I love the Dinosaurs on the 4th floor, 1st floor is a favorite with the Elephants, mayan artifacts, animals, etc. A great place to explore for several hours. Reservations are needed in advance with covid restrictions in place.

The American Museum of Natural History (abbreviated as AMNH), located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City, is one of the largest museums in the world. Located in Theodore Roosevelt Park across the street from Central Park, the museum complex comprises 28 interconnected buildings

This is a great museum to visit if you have small children and/or you are into geography, history, animals, and culture. I love the dinosaur collection here as well as their regional exhibits. I feel so much smarter once I am in. My son is too young to understand all of it but he loves just running up and down and touching some of the fun displays!

Luckily, we don't need to pay admission thanks to my work benefits. Otherwise, it could be expensive!

Loved the dinosaurs halls and the native American exhibitions, but all the taxidermy animals that were gifts/on loan from all these wealthy families so they can have their name on a wall.. That felt a bit 1920s, when all of that was still acceptable.

It is always a pleasure to come to this amazing museum, whether with my son, with friends or alone. Our favorite area is the meteorite room. It is so amazing to learn about these objects from space.

Really loved the museum. If you rush you can see the whole museum in a day. There's a giant wall of stuffed animals that's gorgeous and my fav part. You can see areas that were filmed in movies which is really cool. It's across a nice area of the park if you want to explore that as well. The building itself is gorgeous and worth visiting.

Huge fan of the Hayden Planeterium and Dr. Tyson. Saw the dark matter exhibit. Interesting. Good for the general public. Didn't get into rotational velocity curves or W.I.M.P.S. (weak interacting massive particles) but still very good!

Having been to many museums in San Diego, D.C., and other places, we were looking forward to our visit and really wanted to love the museum. The exhibits, however are tired, many very very dark and all are dusty-dirty. Even the bronze sculptures are only partially dusted. The grounds are beautiful, but the interior of the building is not maintained, with many floor tiles loose or missing and parts of the ladies restrooms broken. Also beware, the entrance fee does not include the Dino exhibit. I m glad we went, but wouldn t go again or recommend it. Wish we d spent our time somewhere else. So sorry!

One of the premier tourist locations of NYC. Not only is it popular for its rendition in "Night at the Museum", the museum has great exhibits. From the main hall to the Ocean section, it truly is magnificent. Furthermore, great public transit access and having Central Park in front make it a must-see tourist spot in NY.

If you are in New York City, this is a must see. DO NOT miss the Museum of Natural History. For the standard visitor, it'll be much more interesting than the Met or other places around town. Plus, you only pay what you're able. Check it out!

It is dated, dusty and overpriced. Most exhibits have not been updated since 70. The map is non-interactive, so it is not always easy to figure out where to go next and how to get there. The video they show in planetarium is not property adjusted for the curvature of the projection dome so everything looks distorted. Cafeteria is dirty, pricey and does not have any healthy choices. It is museum of the museum - it shows you how museums used to look and function before computers were introduced. The collection of the dinosaur bones is pretty good.

First time to NYC and had a CityPass so I went with my husband. All these reviews about the lack of signage is spot on. It's like you are walking in the labyrinth...low lighting, lack of guides and maps, and absolutely no signage anywhere of where you are. Add to that dismally small restrooms (if you can find one) and seriously outdated and no longer valid information, I would give zero stars for this museum. Seriously upset we cut our time at the Met to come to the AMNH. The only reason I'm giving one star is because of the signage saying some of the displays are stereotypical representations. Please consider other museums if you go to NYC, you will not miss anything if you skip this one.

A truly fantastic experience from start to finish. The young lady on the front desk, Dana.K, couldn't have been more pleasant and provided us with excellent advice to maximise our visit. The exhibits were replete with a clear, concise synopsis and were beautifully presented. Our only regret was that we only had a restricted time-frane in which to enjoy the museum.

Follow the lead of the people who run the museum and ignore the cultural exhibits - they've been doing it since the 60s. But seriously those exhibits are amazingly outdated. Walking through the portion that covers the Middle East I half expected to see Zoltar....

The dinosaur and early mammal exhibits, however, are great. Most of that is on the 4th floor, so I suggest starting there. There's a lot to see in those exhibits alone, so that might take up your whole visit.

Enjoy!

This museum will always hold a special place in my heart. I first saw this museum when I was very young, because my father owned a restaurant directly in front of it, on Columbus Ave and 77th, from the 80s until he sold it in the mid 2000s.

I would go to my 1st and 2nd grade around the block, at PS.87. When I finished school, I'd then go to my dad's restaurant.

I have so many distant memories, such as seeing Mike Tyson enter my father's restaurant after he went to this museum in ~2002. I also remember seeing Toby Maguire when he was filming the first Spiderman movie in 2001, in full costume. And Tom Hanks when he was filming "You've got mail" around the block from here.

I never had the chance to enter this museum until 2010, when I went with my first ever date, and it was so amazing! There is an exhibit for any and everything throughout human history. I also went to the planetarium and it was mind blowing! My favorite exhibit is the one with the blue whale.

Ive been to this museum numerous times, and have nothing but positives to say about it. I havnt been there in a while and certainly would love to go there again! This is the BEST museum ever!

Don't bother buying your tickets in advance. They make you wait in the ridiculously long ticket line anyway.

Once inside it's boxes of dead things for about 50% of the area, 25% of the space for gift shops and another 25% for upselling opportunities.

This might have been a museum 50 years ago, but it's a tourist trap now. Your time and money is better spent doing literally anything else in NYC.

Over priced! Everything is grossly over priced! The layout of the museum is a convoluted maze. Sooo many of the displays had such weak and dim lighting, the exhibits could hardly be viewed. Lighting for many of the informational plaques were out and almost impossible to read, unless you used your phone of course. Do the staff change burned out bulbs/lighting. Most of the text on nearly all of the exhibits are so small reading it was a challenge with so many people at each exhibit. No crowd control. Food Court prices are crazy - for the quality of food available - CRAZY! With the amount of money coming in on a daily basis, COME ON NYC you can do better! No T-Rex exhibit (only a T-Rex head). Too many of the dinosaur exhibits looked fake. Made me wonder if they were real fossils. Overall, a rather disappointing outing! I expected so much more from the big bad NYC . . . Two of us attended; spent $100+ and like I said - very dissapointing!

We had a short visit as we only had time in the late afternoon. But the bonus was that the museum was free of charge one hour before closing. We only managed to visit the ground floor, the basement and some of the 1st floor, within a hour, but that was excited enough already, definitely worth another visit.

Even it seems many children enjoy it. However, as the building itself, the function works terrible! No sign for restrooms. Some closed and convenient elevators only works for staffs, excuse me?

This place has been on my bucket list for years & finally got to go on my trip to NYC. It was underwhelming & overwhelming all at the same time. It was underwhelming in the fact that it wasn t as great as I expected & overwhelming because it was SO CROWDED the day we went. There was a line clear down to the light down the street to get in. There isn t very good flow set up so you hit dead ends in the museum so people are fighting to walk through crowds of everything they just saw making it difficult for anyone to actually see anything. I m glad I went to fill the bucket list item, but definitely won t be recommending to go to anyone.

The museum is huge and has a wide variety of exhibits between the several floors. My favorite is the dinosaur fossils and there are plenty of them to see. Of course with any major museum you should expect a crowd, a line, and children. Give yourself extra time in your schedule with that considered, otherwise you ll only see a quarter of the museum.

Parked at their garage, after spending 1 hour waiting, I was told that due to covid I need a reservation. Ok I understand that, but you couldn't say that to people before they park?
Went back to get my car, and it was blocked. The person who works there said that the car owner left and didn't leave him the keys. When I was able to get out I had to pay full rate for parking.
Thanks for ruining my kids day because of your poor management.

Piece of advice for museum entry- don t funnel people with CityPASS in same line with those of whom need to buy a ticket. Makes no sense logistically as it causes a cluster of madness in the front. I suggest you have a small area/kiosk to scan CityPASS holders in and it will decrease the insane wait time. Especially since CityPASS is pre-purchased. It s not exactly fair to make someone of whom prepaid to wait behind those who didn t. Just saying.
