A couple of the displays were out of date (particularly the Primate Hall), but it was absolutely brilliant!
A couple of the displays were out of date (particularly the Primate Hall), but it was absolutely brilliant!
Dark universe show was interesting. Museum exhibits look a little dusty and jaded. A few if the exhibits had no lighting or very poor lighting. The Asian section was substandard. Mexican and South American section was very well represented.
Great museum. Few interactive and hands on museum. Otherwise, good educational content.
The dinosaur bone exhibits were amazing and made the visit very worthwhile. The rest of the museum was not impressive - lots of dioramas, inconsistent cooling and not enough bathrooms.
Very much worth visiting. While it deserves every penny it gets, pay as you want admission is awesome because you can't expect to see everything in a day. Personally there was too much about rocks than I was interested in but that doesn't take away from the collection and variety of exhibits. It is incredible to see a place like this!
The Museum of Natural History has so much to see and do there, you can spend the entire day there. They have everything from dinosaur fossils to the planetarium to the whale room and animals to rock formations and more!
Everytime you turn a corner in this museum there is another section to explore. Huge museum and possibly the best I've ever been to.
My best Museum in N.Y.C.
Lots of construction going on there.
Can't wait for the new bldg to
Be completed...
Good place, lots of expositions, you take the whole day. The entrance is pay what you want and has a food court
I loved the place when I visited in Sep-16. The staff was really helpful in guiding which ticket to buy based on what I can cover in 2 hours before it closes at 5:30 PM. The nearest subway station does not have a cash counter. The installed ticketing machines did not support my cash or card but only coins. If you do not have coins to buy the ticket or subway card, you might have to walk to another subway station (around 10-15 min walk) to get the ticket. Not sure if things have changed now.
We were disappointed that we found out that the main exhibits were closed due to a wedding once we were already inside and paid full price for 4 people.
We would have come back another day if a note was posted at the entrance that the exhibits were closed for the day.
I support events to help pay for the cost of running the museum, however, I thought it would be a courtesy to let people know that the exhibits were not available that day.
Once you get over the allure of gigantic dinosaurs (and that part is very cool), it's a very straightforward museum. Occasionally, they have unique exhibits, but besides those, the butterfly room, and the observatory show, it can get old, fast, especially if you've already been once or twice.
Unfortunately we went on a rainy day, got stuck in a que outside to get in for nearly an hour which lead to us being totally drenched. I know this isn't a fault of the museum but take this into account. People flock there when it rains so expect outside ques even if you have prepaid tickets. Then once inside que again to get your tickets scanned. It total we waited around 1hr 30 before we enter the exhibitions. The museum was good, although there was alot of the same stuff. Shows we're informative and worth the watch. Not as much can be said about the t rex part. We had an all inclusive ticket but if we went again I'd definitely miss that part out, you won't be missing alot 5-10 mins and you'll be done in there. We spent around 5 hours in the museum while being wet so we definitely tried to make the most of it. Air con was super cold so we never dried out, but then again that's not what we went there for so.
We ate at the food court which is very poorly organised, chaos is an understatement and the prices were what you'd pay in restraunt for food court food. Overall I wouldn't return but I'd recommend it if you're struggling for things to do in NY or get an online deal.
Animal exhibits are awesome, my 3 year old enjoyed a lot
Gosh I was jumping up and down like a little kid the entire time. The Rose Space Center was my favorite part, and even though the planetarium and the movies were closed, there was so much content to explore. Gosh I'm coming back so I can absorb all the pictures of the moon and the solar system slowly and take notes! #nerd
1st time visiting and I must say I loved the interactive app the museum has available for download. It provided another level to every exhibit. T
A world of discovery right of Central Park! Came here to check out the butterfly conservatory and loved it! The conservatory has 500 free flying butterflies at any given time and if you're lucky, one might even land on you! Great exhibit and totally worth going. It is open till May!
You could not really ask for more in a Natural History museum.
Plenty of exhibits. Interactive displays. Staff was friendly. Location is easy to get to and even while a bit crowded, was still easily navigable.
Nice museum Choose the right time to go it can be very crowded
It's a good place to go if you enjoy learning. You could easily spend 2 or 3 hours inside. There're cafeterias inside and many places to sit down and have a rest. Suggested ticket is $22 but if you are not interested in the temporary expositions you can pay less. A very appealing place to go.
The dinosaur exhibit alone is worth the visit to this museum. I loved how the exhibits were arranged as a story of evolution, with each small gallery emphasizing a shared feature that united the specimens in that gallery. All of the signage was very educational and centered around common questions that were easy to understand. What makes this collection so great is that they display the actual fossilized bones rather than just casts of the bones. Be sure that you go through the galleries in the right order, though; we initially started going backwards because that's where the elevator let us out. The super short orientation video at the start of the dinosaur gallery is worth it to explain the organization of the exhibits so you can appreciate them as they were meant to be seen. I also really appreciated that the signs for various displays admitted that there are still unanswered questions, or views that have changed across time; for example, there was a sign discussing how we don't know whether stegosaurus' front legs bowed out or were straight, and so they have mountings that reflect both options.
The exhibits were great. A lot of information and a lot of things to see. They ran out of food at the grill and all they had was french fries, pizza and salad. Overall, it was a little unclean.
Great exhibits. But some of the staff were quite abrupt and the signage kinda sucks; I found it difficult to navigate properly.
Awesome muesum, but alot of rude staff...mostly security playing rent a cop taking out childhood issues on people just trying to have a nice time, and the food was more expensive then an air port and was about as good as Martha Stewart's cooking in prison...that may be an over statement.
I'm far from a museum buff, but this place is perfect for those who are very curious or would rather go bar hopping during the night than take in some culture and history. The building itself is massive, and it's not for show...there are TONS of different exhibits here, ranging from the big bang to ocean creatures, you'll find so much here. There is a suggested donation price, but don't fret, you can honestly make any donation you want here. From that point, get ready to experience all this wonderful museum has to offer. Perfect for all ages, and can easily take 3-4 hours to explore just the bare surface.
Maybe the best museum which I have ever seen before.
Can't go wrong here just as long as the crowds are not out of control.
The food court is absolutely disgusting and overpriced too. Dont eat there. Museum is fine.
It is a fun place to go, but it is pretty dang busy. In fact, all of NYC is pretty dang busy so, you know, only go if you don't mind it being pretty dang busy.
Lots of history in this place. If you love history, come get your fill!!!
Fantastic, kids and adults will have lots of exploring.
Loads to see and learn. The dinosaur fossils were amazing!!!
Dark Universe in the planetarium was stunning! Loved the human organs and many other displays. So much here.
Bring a sweater, some Halls are absolutely freezing. We had to go outside into the 85 degree air to warm up partway through our visit.
Also, the lighting in some exhibits is really dark Kama making some of the descriptions a bit difficult to read.
What an amazing historical place with a lot of ancient attic facts the dinasour section was truly amazing
An American icon. Yes there are exceptionally dated exhibits and some questionable material and organization that borders on an outmoded anthropological model of exoticism but the entirety is just spectacular. A return visit is a testament to Holden Caulfield's observations on permanence and change.
Natural History is a wonderful museum. It is the perfect combination of special events and permanent exhibits.
One of the best natural history museums in the world.
Extensive space with exhibits spanning pre-history to the space age. Just along Central Park in upper Manhattan.
Museums are special for me. Whereever I go they are the first places I go look for. There is so much fun in getting lost in history. Here you can get coins printed with your favourite historic ecology system on it. Kids will love the interaction.
The exhibits are many and amazing. Admission is by donation.
Wow - this is a gorgeous museum. The dinosaur exhibits are great to look at but even better are the staged animals of africa, asia and north america. The details are fantastic. It is a huge museum so you'll spend a lot of time here!
My daughter had the best time. She woke up the next morning and asked to go again.
My friends and I had a great time here. I only wish there were more hours in the day since there is so much to see and do.
As a scientist this museum was a bit of a disappointment, but maybe my expectations were too high. Many of the exhibits are made of plastic and all of the museum has an outdated feel. That said, the dinosaur exhibit is awesome that worth a visit even if you skip all the other parts of the museum.
Loved it! Very interesting. You do need 2 days to see it all.
The finest museum of natural history, acommodating to researchers and visitors alike. The galleries are ever changing with a variety of ways to interact with the collection. The collection itself is extensive with examples of species from around the world.
We spent a few hours and saw just a percentage of it! Worth a trip back!
My new favorite museum. Get here early to beat the crowds. This museum is massive. I was mind blown how big it is. Saw the T Rex exhibit and it was incredible.
Made the mistake of going on a school day, hundreds of kids everywhere, not the museums fault I know but we couldn't see a lot of the exhibits as kids would barge in front of you and block your path. Star off.
We paid 46 dollars to enter as this was the suggested donation for 2
Two of the main exhibits I wanted to see where closed off so again a star off, apart from that it's a very nice museum with loads to explore, staff are friendly and knowledgeable.
Go on the weekend would be my advice
I love it here I've been coming here since I was a child now I am happy to experience the fun with my son he loves it as well
My second time to visit. First time was with my 8th grade science class from Seaford Long Island in 1963. This time as a retired school teacher from Florida. This museum is filled with amazing artifacts, fossils, dinosaur bones, and has IMAX movies and special exhibits. We saw movie about Dark Matter/ Dark Energy in the planetarium area, which is huge. Enjoyed The Blue Planet -Oceans, which included a 94 model of a blue whale. T Rex and dinosaur models, Windows on Nature, and the Willamette Meteorite found in Oregon, and largest one from the US- 15.5 tins of iron.
Staff is very rude. They rush you out of the museum 15 minutes before it closes. I will not be making any donations here ever again.
I will never be tired to come here as often as possible!
Wonderful place! Couldn't finish all in one visit. Will visit again
A wide range of things to see, so something for everyone! Easily my favorite museum in NYC!
This is the best museum I've ever been to. The place is huge, and we were able to get in free with a military ID. The humanoid exhibit is incredible! They had real human skulls and brains! Very cool. Even the exhibits I normally would find More
Love the museum, but they added extra exhibits that you now have to pay extra to see.
Amazing place. Everyone who visit NYC should spend some time at this museum. Make sure you have 4+ hours, because its huge!
I love this museum! From the dinosaurs to the planetarium, this place truest is world-class. A must-see for science lovers.
A truly fascinating museum with a multitude of experiences. The museum is filled with a variety of themes catering to many interests. Below the museum is also a food court where you can get food at good prices.
Wonderful place for kids to learn about history and nature, we all enjoyed a lot.
In spite of the long line on the Sunday after Christmas, we were quickly past the security checkpoint and in line for tickets. A helpful staff member working the ticket line showed us how to use our cell phone to order tickets and skip the line. In a short time we had online tickets and were on our way. Even though there were many people, the museum moves people very efficiently and we saw the exhibits we planned to see in our allotted time. Top notch exhibits and we'll worth pur time. My advice; buy your tickets in advance using your smartphone.
Worst managed museum ever!!!!
No clear direction, overcrowded elevator, staff does not bother at all with the Visitor, some exhibits was overcrowded to the point of the air conditioner is not working.
Worst experience ever!!!
Lovely exhibits. I enjoyed that they are diligent in providing good information on plaques for us to read. Very thoughtful layout in the dinosaur section. Never a boring moment!
Nothing came to life and did anything, plus Teddy did not look like Robin Williams. Other than that, it was awesome!
Had an amazing experience here with staff that were beyond helpful and friendly, be prepared to spend time reading up on the exhibits and bring your walking shoes.
In addition to the "permanent" exhibits, the Museum always has a number of limited-time "specials," (there's one on the biome that just opened) that are, by themselves, sometimes worth a visit.
The prices are high but the Museum itself is awesome. My family and I went a few years ago and we had a lot of fun.
How could you not love the dinosaurs at the American Museum of Natural History.
Beautifully curated museum with wonderfully in depth histories of the various exhibits. My personal favorite was the dinosaurs, but the animal exhibits are quite beautiful and well made. It was a wonderful first trip to the museum and I can't wait to come again.
Always a favorite for our family. Highly recommend.
Terrible place, difficult to navigate, you would easier find multiple museum shops rather than any logical flow of exposition. Very dry air, sometimes feels like you will suffocate. No directions, no clear exposition path. Not recommended at all.
Great visit when coming to New York. So many different things to see and do, would highly recommend the Planetarium and the Dark Universe special exhibit if still playing!
Great way to spend a day in NY. So much to look at and learn, all the docents are friendly and knowledgeable. Easy to get to on the subway.
Tried to go but line wrapped around the block. No way you ll get kids to wait in line that long!
This museum is gigantic, with thousands of things to see. We spend three hours inside and we could only see a little bit.
Lines are ridiculous...coat check line is a joke....1 person who is slowas a sloth....tookus 1 hour to get through coatchand city pass lines
Great museum to bring the family. Every time we go there we have a great time.
It is huge and nice. You and your kids can learn a lot of things about other countries' culture and dinosaurs also nature . Amazing place
Great experience. So much to see and explore. Definitely plan to visit a few more times. Just make sure you eat a heavy meal before heading there or you will expect to wait a long time to eat with very very very limited seating (you are more than likely have to eat standing up holding your plate).
Who would not want to learn more about the evolution of Natural History.
I've been going to this museum since I was a child and as always it's a wonderful experience!
A spectacular museum and truly one of the best things we did while in new york. The area of central park immediately outside the building is particularly pleasant, however the museum itself has some excellent and informative areas. The dinosaur section, animal dioramas and space sections we particularly good. Would recommend downloading the free app also as it gives additional information, although it was a tad unstable.
Best educational resource I've had the pleasure of visiting
Terrible, worse museum I have ever been in. (And I've been in many) Very disorganized, you will feel disoriented and lost the entire visit. After 2 hrs I couldn't wait to leave. Many exhibitions are not dated and staff is unfriendly.
Its an all day event, so plan accordingly. Be sure to look at your entry tix if you purchase special exhibits, there are specific times you have to be at them. We were not told that when we bought them and nearly missed a couple exhibits because of it
