Great place for a weekend ski trip. Decent number of runs and good variety, convenient options for food and warming up, and all the rental gear you might need. Some of it was a little old (those poles are ready for the scrap heap!) but any shortcomings were made up by the awesome, incredible staff!

I went to get a cheeseburger and you can see the people making the food. The guy didn't even wear gloves to make my cheeseburger! I was disgusted. I recommend eating somewhere else before going to winterplace if it were me.
I had a great experience there, definitely very cool!!! ..the only thing that bothered me was that for the price their facility is very run down. They need to invest back into their own company, the person who attended us was very demanding kinda like a military personnel he was we alright.
Took the Scouts. Had a wonderful trip. Frustrating that I couldn't send my 6 (almost 7) year old to the ski school with his sisters. They said he had to be accompanied by an adult and I wasn't allowed because I wasn't skiing. Was not made clear at registration. Fail on that point.
Had a wonderful time today at Winterplace. Just under 3 hours from Charlotte, you cannot beat the fun time. Scott Hanes are instructor was wonderful. The patience that he should me and family was wonderful. We will continue to come to this gem of a slope.
Sadly this was the worst resorts I have ever been to. I was appalled by the attitudes of the staff (ski patrol/medics in particular) and will never return. This place is expensive and lame. Find better snow my friends and have a wonderful winter!
I have been to Winterplace too many times to count. This time was VERY different. My niece and nephew ended up at ER with head wounds from your tubing area. I suggest you replace your help with adults or better trained young people. A 5 and 6 year old could have had a wonderful fun time had the ONLY worker at the top of the tube lanes and he was on our lane had been paying attention and NOT looking around with his hands in his pockets. 5 year old went down the lane and it wasn t clear from 6 year old. Manager Doug was mostly no help either. Ski patrol was AWESOME! Cassie(?) that works in mountain house was a sweetheart! I WILL be contacting you all..this was a careless accident that could have been avoided. I ve never seen such disregard for safety as I did tonight. Concussion and bloody eye for two children ... first ski trip for them...thank you Winterplace.
Not too bad. Don't see why people complain and say they should've went somewhere else. Then do it! My gf and I had a great time February 5th. Staff is rude though and not very helpful. I would go again.
The snow quality is usually pretty good and there are lots of fun slopes. The only downside is the fact that it is pretty small, so you can do just about every slope in a single day. Other than that is it a great place for beginners, but if you want more, go out west
This is a very family friendly place to enjoy a day on the mountain. Everyone from the rental equipment staff to the lift operators are very friendly and helpful. We went there during our kids' winter break and despite the less than ideal weather conditions we had a great time. We will visit again!
Wish they had a microwave (12/25/2018) 2/1/2020 Still no microwave, my 3 year old had to eat cold food. The seats on Lift 5 needs some attention. Im pretty sure the other lifts I rode that day (4,2/8,3,9) all had some sort of a cover over the rails and screws that hold the rails down. Lift 5 however does not, the end of my jacket in the back (not exactly a loose article of clothing) got caught on either a screw or a rail end no sure.. Well i got off and started skiing away, and as the lift turned back it took me with it and threw me to the ground. Most of my body hit a mat on the ground there which was great (not sure if this also means that this happens alot). But my thigh landed on the wooden border, which has been swollen for 2 days now, with some pain still with every step. Im just glad i didnt have my 3 year old with me for that ride as he would have gotten injured as well...
Great ski resort. I come every year staff is great always helpful and I'm glad they use their snow maker frequently because skiing in March is an awesome thing.
Went tubing after 5pm on a weekend. They didn't have much of a wait time. The longest part was literally that lift to go up. I'm fat and I was fine on the tubes. Don't be afraid just go and have fun!
Ski Wee school was excellent for teaching my older children to ski; they were on the slopes the first day!! Frosties daycare was also wonderful. Safe environment and skilled workers allowed my husband and I to enjoy our time on the slopes knowing our little ones were in good hands. This was our first time here but we are already planning our return!
We visited Winterplace to go snow tubbing. We had a great time just as we have many times before. They have a shuttle service if you don't want to walk. Restrooms were clean. Have food for sale but prices are a little high. Staff was very helpful with questions we had. If you get cold you can come inside and warm up by the fire. Great experience!!
Pricey but we had a good time over all. If your child is under 44 inches tall call to make sure that the kiddy park is open. We came from South Carolina and found out after we got there, it was closed for the day. It was our own fault for not calling. But they we were told he couldn't do anything else either. There's literally nothing else for them to do. The gentleman running the tubing area was very nice and let us slide him around on the side, which SAVED the trip.
Good for a small mountain, friendly employees and decent rental equipment. It does not have the mountain town vibe I was looking for but was worth the trip.
Best value mountain within three hours of Central NC. Much bigger than NC slopes with a few more blacks than others. Definitely worth the extra drive for my family.
Morgan was terrific!! Thanks for the great customer service!! This was our first time here and we will be back! Winter place is now our favorite place for tubing!
It was a really good place to go tubing and spend some time with people that you like. It was unfortunatley very expensive. 34.50 for one person for 4 hours or 38.50 for 8 hours. Per person. Not only that but it was 16.50 for 1 cheeseburger, fries and a beer, that were not good enough to justify the price. There was not a changing room, only bathroom stalls. There are lockeea, but they cost 1.00 every time you open them. Other than that, it was fine though. Overall it was a pretty good time.
We love Winterplace! They have a program Scouts on Skis for all Scouting youth that we attend every year. The staff are all incredible and so patient with the kids. For many of our kids that go, this is a once in a lifetime experience and the folks at Winterplace help to make it a very memorable day!
Totally love it!! If you're a beginner this is a great place to start, they rent all the equipment including the water proof insulated jumpsuit if you want, prices are very affordable, and the do offer a learn to ski class, restrooms and a cafeteria inside. All the staff is very friendly so you can feel comfortable asking questions. Good luck! But most importantly have fun.
The resort is nice. Not alot of flow to the slopes. The condo was not so good. It a door that wouldn't open, half of the plug-ins didn't work. The balcony sliding door would bearly open. The dining counter looked like a kid painted it with glue and a brush.
I'm a newbie to snow skiing so Winterplace is a great place to come out for quite a few different run styles for my level. There are also harder runs for more experienced skiers so it does seem like there is something for everyone. Not all of the slopes were open this visit, though, but there were enough to keep us entertained from 11am to 5pm for sure. Oh but now that I think of it, I didn't notice technical runs or trick runs for the snowboarders...did I miss them or are they not available? There is plenty of parking with lot attendants to guide you and you don't have to walk too far to get to the ski center. We were a bit confused trying to figure out where to go to get lift tickets, though. We followed people in and stood in what looked like a long, slow line...turns out we were in the rental line. Luckily we had already rented my gear from the Ski Barn (recommend! Quick service there! And very close and you can also buy other gear!) so we stepped out of this line and went toward the "lift ticket only" line which was in a slightly different area. The line was pretty short and quick and they have a military discount. Lift ticket stickers in hand..we notIced a small metal hanger on a nearby table that you're supposed to use with the stickers to hang them from your jacket. And onward from there we found a locker room area with mostly small lockers that would no way have fit my stuff. And I think you have to use coins to rent them, so where do you get coins from? Maybe I just missed it ...there was a lot of newness going on for me. I think there were also some larger lockers to rent and a section of large cubbies to use. Now geared up and ready to go! We had left our skis and poles outside where my friends husband dropped them off for us in the pickup turnaround. Clonking around in our snow boots we had to walk up a flight of stairs with all of our stuff. We had the resort map with us hidden in one of our pockets so just winged it the first time and hoped that we would pick the right lift to start off with.At the lifts you can read on the signs what kind of runs you will be taken to. We asked while boarding the lift which run to take and were told something that would have been good had we understood exactly where they were describing. Instead we found a run with a steeper start..so there you go, I got my first fall out of the way in the first minute! After that we tried another lift and had a better experience and eventually found the map and figured out how to read it. Without a map, it seemed a bit difficult to me to know if I was doing the right thing for my skill level. But again, I'm a newbie so maybe things are more obvious to others if you've done it more often. We lucked out with it being cold enough to snow the day before and they had made some snow through the week. What a cool thing and we are so very lucky they can do that for us skiers in this part of the world. Finally decided to take a break for lunch and have to say that experience was just so-so. If you didn't wipe out on the slippery cafeteria flooring, that was a plus. My salad was fine but my friend wasn't totally thrilled with the hot dog and how long it took to make. Be careful in the bathrooms, too, with that same flooring. It's a fun slippery ride but luckily they are small so you can quickly catch yourself on something to save from falling. There was a room with a bar area, so that could be fun for the adults if you're hanging out for a longer period of time. And there is another food option somewhere ... maybe it was a restaurant? Not sure as I didn't find it this trip. Maybe next time! Also to note is that the staff was all very nice and helpful so that was a great experience. And they have what looks like a great ski school but you have to pay extra for it so I didn't. I guess my post could sound like I didn't enjoy myself and that is not the case. I loved the skiing part, that was really fun! My overall visit was enjoyable and just fine. I just wanted to let you know the little pieces that were a bit surprising.
I enjoyed my time here! I'm new to snowboarding and the instructor was great. Obviously I spent the day on the bunny slop but fun all the same! My fiance ran other slops and said it they were good.
We wanted to try the Restaurant and get details on the snow tubing it the future. The road was not clear. The parking lot was empty and Icy. I am not sure if the restaurant was even open.
Turkey Shoot redeems this mountain - when left ungroomed and allowed to 'Mogul Up' you can't beat it. The rest of the mountain is kind of meh - but on a good day I'll run Turkey Shoot all day long and feel like I just skied out west :)
This place is beyond terrible. The employees have no idea what they are doing, from the ticket counter to the rental equipment to the cafeteria. I usually don't like to write these type of reviews, but seeing how the so called management speaks to their employees in front of patrons really irks me.
The interior looks like the inside of my old beat up elementary school with the same old moldy carpet lining the floors all while the cafeteria isn't suitable for wild animals. Everything is frozen and overcooked.
Drive the extra few hours to Snowshoe or turn around and head south to somewhere in NC.
Our son Cullen who is 6 years old started snowboarding this year,so we elected to enroll him in ski wee program. Bib was his instructor and did a wonderful job with him all he talks about is boarding and Bib . We really appreciate the staff at winterplace and hope Bib gets recognized for her time she spent with Cullen Hinson
It has probably been 20 years since I ve been to Winterplace. I couldn t wait to take my family and share with them how great this place is that boasts how friendly it is for beginners. We all took a beginning snowboarding class. It was terrible. My youngest son felt so ridiculed that he just sat down and refused to attempt anymore. The instructor gave very little instructions and zero encouragement. Then he trash talked to my husband about how he couldn t believe how my son was not even trying (I don t think he even realized we were all related). The place seemed run down from what I remembered. We were planning on a full day of snowboarding, eating lunch and snow tubing as well but promptly left after the lesson was over. We paid a great deal of money for a 90 minute session where we didn t even learn how to stop despite repeatedly asking that question. We left so discouraged after hoping to make this a new winter tradition for our family.
Great atmosphere and variety of slopes. We really loved that the hills were open until 10:00PM. It can be a bit chaotic on some of the hills over the weekend (or other peak times)
Not a bad mountain at all. Good for beginner to intermediate riders. Weather conditions were awesome. Staff was friendly and helpful. They offer a great exchange program. If your board/skis break or you want to try a different size/style of board or ski, you can use your own board/ski as collateral, and they will let you use a rental at no cost. My bindings broke and I got to try out a few different size boards. Pretty cool if your looking to try something different. Again, not a great expert mountain, but really good for beginners and intermediate riders.
We went to go snow tubing which the website said was open and we got there and walked a mile to get up a big hill and it wasn t open. The website said it was open, but when we got up to the snow tubing building, nobody was up there and we called the front desk and asked and they said it was closed for snow making and re- surfacing.
