One of my favorite ski resorts in the east. Great ...
One of my favorite ski resorts in the east. Great place to learn how to ski
One of my favorite ski resorts in the east. Great place to learn how to ski
Why better than the slopes in the North Carolina mountains. If you live in the south and want a quick ski trip, this is the place.
Great place for first time skiers, this is where I learned to ski! They have classes for beginners and lots of small hills to practice on. They also have many advanced hills including several black diamonds. Great customer service, nice hills, nice ski lifts, quality rental skis and snowboards. They also have a nice lounge/restaurant to rest at in between skiing.
The lifts are run down along with the whole place. Seriously needs a face lift.
Being from South Carolina, ski resorts are pretty scarce except for a few in NC. I loved every second I was at WinterPlace. Went from 9am all the way to 10pm and will definitely be going back next ski season! I went on a Thursday so it wasn t too crowded. Don t know how weekend crowds are but I d say expect it to be busy.
Love this place. Very nices cabins.. family really enjoyed it.
Snow tubing was fun, prices are good. Staff was rude.
I absolutely love skiing here. I can't say that I've ever actually stayed on the property, but as for the slopes, they're great for beginners (this is where I learned), and it's great for more advanced skiers (where I'm at now).
Disappointed. Wait lines were fine but they were forcefully blowing snow to the point we could not see anything and we were covered in ice by the time we got to the bottom of the runs. Skiers and snowboarders were all running into each other due to the blinding conditions. There is no organization as every run was blowing snow and no one was monitoring the runs, we had people WALKING all over the mountain in these conditions when it was already icy and hard to see. Also pricey for the amount of lifts/runs that are available. Will not be returning to winter place.
Love this place took my son for his first time all he talks about is wanting to go back
I surprised my wife here over Valentine s weekend to snowboard, and it was ok, at best. The facilities are very old and out-dated, and the rental equipment was even worse. This wasn t our first time renting equipment and we have had better experiences elsewhere. The boots were old and slightly broken, my wife s boots were very uncomfortable although they were her size. We had only been on the snow for about 2 1/2 hours and my wife s binding broke. It was WAY too busy. They had a lot of people on the trails, and a bunch of large groups. This caused a lot confusion at the bottom of trails and we kept having to stop to allow people to get out of the way to continue our runs. I might try this place again if we brought our own equipment along and it was 1/3 of the people. Otherwise, I wouldn t recommend Winterplace.
I have only been tubing here, but it was awesome! The tubing hill is well maintained and the staff are a lot of fun. The food is decent.
Family of 5 review:
Dad: Day 1, 3 wet snow - day 2, cold rain. Even with the difficult weather, the skiing was good (thanks to a good base). I ve skied mostly in the east, and this is the among the best I ve been to. The staff was excellent, the food was good. Our 3 girls went to ski-wee, an all day school and fun facility, and LOVED it.
Mom: the equipment rental staff was very nice, helping me through a paperwork problem without fussing.
Big sister: a little progress the first day, and a lot on the second! My teacher was kind and showed me lots of good tips.
Twin 1: I really liked the snow because I could make a snowball and throw it at my teacher - and they didn t get mad!
Twin 2: on the first day, I was a little scared, but on the 2nd day I persevered and was AWESOME thanks to my teachers!
Awesome place to Ski and Tube always have a blast when we come!!!
What a great place to have a family reunion in the summertime
It's fun to take kids, and I had a lot of fun to. You can go down mountain's. You can ski and snowboard. There are classes to teach you. There is beginning and avvance classes. If you want to ski or snowboard go there. It's the best Ski resort ever. It's so much fun. KIDS LOVE IT!!!
Great place to ski for the entire family. Everyone is so friendly and willing to help.
Good evening ride. Most things well lit - a couple of black slopes we avoided bc dark and scant coverage. Over all pretty good, they can t help the weather. We changed outside but locker rooms and such looked pretty nice. $40 is a bit high for a 5-10p ticket still tho.
Winterplace is pretty much in my backyard. The skiing can be very fun. I grew up in NE Ohio, learned how to ski/snowboard at places like Brandywine/Boston Mills. Winterplace is very comparable. The weekends, and holidays it can get a little crazy there with church groups, and such so If you can, I d come on a weekday, a lot less people, some Wednesday nights I hardly see anyone Skiing. I own my own equipment, so I can't give a personal review but I ve heard positive and negative response from my guests who rented equipment. Lodging, since I run the B&B Mavis Manor, on the other side of mountain, I disqualify myself from reviewing the lodging. My place is comfy and nice though. . All and All Winterplace is easy to get to, (right off of I-77) the road are always plowed/salted, a nice size Resort, and if this winter is anything like the past winters we should have lots of nice snow.
Super cool staff perfect day for skiing everyone was very helpful and polite I had a great time.
What great fun!!!! We had a blast tubing! The staff were super friendly and helpful!!! We will be back!!
Winterplace ski resort in West Virginia was good. We had a fun time snow tubing there. The place was very easy to locate. There was ample parking. There were lots of choices on the menu to eat. The rental area to get snow bibs or skis did take a long time. Overall it was a good experience and we will definitely be back.
One of favorite ski hills located near endless atv riding.
It's a good "Blue Collar" resort. Affordable and maintained. Always have a great time
Great experience always a good place to go skiing never super crowded great place for beginners
Our accommodation, which was showing signs of disrepair, was right on the slopes. This made ski time longer each day and allowed time to get home for lunch. The snow was enough to keep me and my son busy each day, and had loads of fun.
Its just some dump where the food is nasty and the rental equipment is trash, but the employees hold themselves to a high standard.
I learned skiing and snowboarding here. The instructors are very nice, helpful and professional. I had very great time here.
Great place to ski and snowboard, the staff was friendly and the slopes were well maintained.
Great people and their current ski package is a good deal
Awesome! First time skiing and I could actually stand up and make it down a slope by the end of the day. As a beginner this place isn't too bad. However, if you are new to winter sports then try out different greens! The bunny slope was too crowded and dangerous!
Once I moved trails I really picked up some skiing experience. BTW, some of the greens are as challenge as the blues. So don't be afraid to try those out if you're a beginner like me
Also, be careful of the parking situation! I had some a-hole park me in! We would have had them towed but luckily an employee was parked in front of us and was able to let us out after a 20 minute wait. Please don't be like him/her, find an actual parking spot!
It was a good experience. It got very crowded mid day. We had a lot of fun.
I went to this place as a child and remember it being a great place to ski. So, I planned a family trip to Winterplace now that I have two little ones of my own. It was as wonderful as I remembered. Not all the slopes were open because of the unusually warm weather but the majority were open. This still provided my little ones with plenty of area to learn to ski.
The skiwee school was awesome. If you have small children, I highly recommend it. The instructors were awesome. They were very patient with the children and with us as we were insistent on taking pictures. By the third day my little girl was going down the slopes from the top of the mountain.
All the staff I encountered during our stay were positive and upbeat. They interacted with us and made us feel as though we were welcome. Oh, to the guy running one of the ski lifts(sorry I dont remember your name), GO ARMY! BEAT NAVY!!!!!
So, the only reason for the 4 stars is all the slopes not being available. Otherwise this is the perfect place to ski and my family and I will continue to visit for years to come.
Thank you Winterplace staff. You guys rock!!!
First visit there - was in the area Ok place for the locals. Wouldn't travel more than 75 minutes to go there. No terrain park and very little terrain otherwise. And too many flat areas.
I went snow tubing with a group there and the staff were GREAT! The staff would joke with us when we would start jokes with them. They made a not so good day become a great night of snow tubing. Because myself and some of the other girls in out group are teenagers we made friends with some of the teen workers there. I even have me an instructor that will teach me how to snowboard when I go back! Because of the great time I plan to go back very soon!
The best local experience of the season hands down!
Tubing runs & snowboarding trails are great! Snowboarded with a day pass & tubed at night. Tubing at night is the way to go, less kids & people in general. Ticket sales & on location staff were friendly, informative and fun. Bar staff in Snowdrift lounge were slow & a lil off but friendly.
Visited during the off season for skiing but enjoyed the accommodations. Quite a view, saw deers in the field. This place is where you go to get away from it all. Rustic as it gets.
Nice, lifts are good, trails are good, food is so so but the lines to get it are far too long. Grilling 4-6 burgers at a time when there are 100 ppl on line.
Snowshoe is much better, but the location of wintetplace is a plus
I loved snow tubing here. I also took a ski class but my instructor was not really nice or understanding of beginners. Granted I was a terrible skier but at minimum should have been nice.
Great bathroom facilities that can accommodate two full sized men.
Horrible first time experience. We had called the night before about snow tubing and they had said it would be a great day to tommorrow they said they had a 24 inch base but 2 lanes we're closed because grass was showing. We were there 2 and a half hours and only went down five times for $110 dollars for 3 people. They were short staff, and only had 6 people working the snowtube area, and 1 of the lifts was not operating which when we asked about they said they were short staff which was not there problem. We spent the last hour hearing employees talking about my grandmother and the original person we talked to had spread a rumor that she had said the f*** word. Which is not true because she never curses. And 3 minutes before it was 5:00 which was when we had to leave to employees were overheard by 2 members of our group saying they would not let her go back through one last time before we left and were happy she was leaving. Did I mention we passed three other much cheaper ski resorts that also had snow tubing to get here. I do not reccomend and it is a waste of time and especially money. Never come here I will always remmember this horrible trip.
Not all slopes were open but that was fine! The 15 we still had to choose from made for one unforgettable weekend!
Outstanding Family Oriented Facilities !!!
Awesome Staff and Service !!
We decided to come to winter place after struggling to find affordable lodging at snowshoe. We were really impressed. Coming from Boone, NC where there are a handful of resorts we were happy to see pretty much all the runs open and a good base of snow on the ground. Boone is struggling this year. We skied Sunday through Tuesday. Sunday was busy but not too crowded. There were lots of lifts running and we hardly had to wait in line. The layout of the resort is a little different but we figured it out quickly and had no issues there.
Monday we skied and we re two of about twelve people on the entire mountain which was really nice. No crowds and plenty of freshly groomed slopes. It was great. I took a group lesson but because of the lack of people it was a private lesson. Great instructors and a great place to learn. We did notice that a few of the lifts weren t running during the week that had run on the weekend. The staff here was very friendly from the ticket sales people to the lifties. Meals in the restaurants were a little pricey but not nearly as much as other resorts. There s not much in the area so bring snacks and food if you plan to save money. Our only complaint was that there were lines of people as you get off the lift, but that s something that happens most places. Overall we had a great trip and would highly recommend winter place.
Friendly staff, fun slopes, and they offer a discount with your student ID! If you're planning to visit for the day, an all day lift ticket isn't too expensive, especially if you get there early and stay until they close. The food is pricey in the cafeteria, but it is a resort so that feels expected. Ski and snowboarding lessons are offered to anyone that wants to pay, if not you can learn on your own on the many different slopes they have available. All around a very fun time if you enjoy snow sports.
The lessons were not as good as I thought they would be. The slopes needed a bit more snow on them. And it was very difficult to find out which slopes were open or not. On the other hand, it was SKIING so lots of fun there! It was a great experience to go hang out with friends and family, and they had very nice people working which was surprising considering how many people they have to deal with everyday. So I would check it out. I loved it. It was a great weekend.
Ski, tube, snow board, in winter. And fall foilage lift rides in autumn
Room and Bar, Fantastic Relationship,
Ski enjoy
Need to expand more it's been the same size for years
We brought Troop 801, from Myrtle Beach SC up for the weekend. Awesome Ski Resort! Very friend staff from ski rentals to lift attendants to instructors.
We will be back!
Service was was plain awful. Would not recommend to individuals who are learning to ski. I am taking a beginners skiing class for my college. I've never been to Winterplace, tried skiing, and I had nobody with me to help. Once I finally managed to find my way to the place and get my ski pass things went downhill. I had to litterally nag the the people working there to tell me anything I needed to do. Everybody I met I told them I was a beginner, that I've never been here, and that I didn't know where to go. Not one offered to help me locate anything I needed. I was completely lost, no one told me I needed a lift pass, how to work the ski boots, where the ski polls are located, where to exit the building to actually ski, where the beginner classes were at,what times those classes started, and where the locker rooms are located. I was the only one there at the time and all the employees were just standing by the ski rentals chatting. I made so many trips back and forth through the building because no one would tell me anything I needed. I would get one question out of them per trip because they would immediately go back to chatting. After finally getting everything sorted and knowing the general location of where the classes started I waited outside for an hour, because the times online for the classes were wrong and so was my professor. The only reason this is getting more than 1 star is because of the person who taught me to ski. They were wonderful and taught well they didn't assume I knew what I was doing and actually helped me when I told them I was a beginner. The only reason I'm going to go back is because I need the class for college.
the slopes were well covered and the staff is friendly
I went here on the last day they had night skiing, I went only for tubing, the staff gave 0 attention to safety. At one point an Autistic kid fell on the ramp and my self and others had to jump off the ramp so he didn't get walked over. Keep in mind it is there job to look out for these things. There was also people using the same tube together at least 3 times in a row I told them about it and they did nothing about it, there was a pile of tubes at the top of the hill. The staff seems like there there just to get paid and nothign else. one employee was smoking a cigarette at the top of the hill so me and other kids had to smell his second hand smoke. The employee that only showed up for part of the time at the bottom of the hill kept making comments saying ow it that my relief I am ready to go home.
A great place for beginners and experts alike to enjoy the skiing experience. We had Chaz as our trainer for the beginners session and he and his team made it an enjoyable experience...
Had man-made snow, but did a good job covering most of their trails. Took care of the trails. Was better than I had expected for an East coast resort.
Great place to stay and ski staying in the condos is awesome
Decent conditions for being such a small mountain. If you go on a weekday, the lines will be much shorter or even non-existent. This is a good substitute for some of the other nearby mountains that might be more crowded.
It is a great ski resort with lots of slopes and well organize. Staffs are friendly and wash rooms are clean all the time. Had a wonderful experience here and sure will come back again next year.
Decent slopes when the snow is good. Best to go on the week day when it's not crowded
Winterplace is a nice beginners resort. It has a wide variety of trails. Be aware that the rentals takes a very long time on the weekends and the rental snowboarding bindings are not tradition bindings.
My grandson had a blast tubing!! A long wait for tickets and an even longer wait for a tube!
Awesome! The snow quality was outstanding! Also, the group lessons were great and I learned a lot of techniques for skiing. I heard that their snowtubing is great.
Have been here many times and always a great return never forget the slopes easy access to all the areas and food too
This they need to check there equipment for safety. They treat our group well though.
Only a few slopes open bc of weather but still fun!
Outstanding ski school for beginner skiers and snowboarders. Friendly, knowledgeable instructors and well organized program for kids.
Nice little place. Not crowded, fast lift lines. 3 nice runs they call black, but are more light blue really. Friendly staff.
This is a small yet fun ski hill. The hills aren't difficult, but do get a bit icy at night. The facility isn't bad, but the large lines checking in and at the lifts cause excessive wait times, which will lead to a good bit of frustration. The food is overpriced and high school lunch room quality. They do offer beer to help wash down the guilt of paying 30 dollars for your meal though.
Beautiful day at Winterplace West Virginia! I was pleasantly surprised at how uncrowded it was for a Sunday. Even got senior rates for my lift ticket.
Smaller than I thought. Still fun. I'm not sure but it seems there are a lot of locals with attitudes running around. I don't know what it is about skiing and snowboarding that gets people to be rude but there was tension from just about everyone. Complete opposite from Canaan Valley. I only live a little over an hour away but I believe I'll be skipping this season.
Ski instructors that scream at kids that are first timers is nothing short of unacceptable. On top of that, one of the snowboard instructors was high as a kite and reeked of pot. C'mon guys! I know it's the end of the season but still try.
NOT a place to take a church youth group.
Good ski resort for a day trip. Trails are shorter than some of the bigger resorts like Snowshoe, but it s east to get around and is great for a few hours on the slopes.
Decent southern ski resort, easily reachable (right off interstate). Not much of a park, but the runs are varied and interesting. Lifts are ancient, however, so expect a lot of time riding to the top.
Snow tubing was awesome! I highly recommend this as a place to introduce kids to snow sports.
