I went here with my friends to get some burgers for my bday and its was amazing the doubles winsteads are bomb and so is everything else on the menu not to mention the skyscraper shake it was enough for all of us ten out of ten would reccomend and in the pic i didnt wanna show my face
Had a postmates deliver me some winsteads, when i bit into my chicken strip the texture was a little odd, the chicken strip was completely raw.
This is the place to go if you want a old fashion hamburger and a milkshake. Kid friendly as well.
The food is always very tasty and the people at the drive through were very pleasant.
Friendliest staff, and so refreshing to go in somewhere and sit to eat lunch
Good food.
A bit on the expensive side.
The shakes are good.
This is my go-to late night food on the weekends since I live nearby. The only problem is they don't let you walk through the drive through and the inside is closed, so that is a bit inconvenient. Otherwise, the food is nice and greasy and the shakes are delicious.
Stopped for malts after Dawson's concert. Everyone but the grouchy old man was happy about it, but he got a malt too.
Excellent diner food, would compare to steak n shake but better imo.
Everything is good, but the burgers are thin don't feel bad about getting the double standard.
Winsteads is a great restaurant with quick and delicious food, amazing atmosphere, and great service. Google claims it to be a cheap place to eat but it definetly is not, the cheapest meal, Tiny Tot Meal, is 5 dollars and wont even fill up a baby cat. For the love of God, this is the worst meal you could possibly order and I regret getting it. I got what was basically a 50 cent slider, 6 tater tots, and the smallest cup of coke you could ever imagine. This should cost $2 or $2.50, not $5. Other than that the food is amazing (except the tiny meal, it doesnt taste like anything they make - I can't stress enough how bad the tiny meals are). Perfect for special occasions and for those who love a nice, colourful, 50's esthetic.
P.S. DON'T GET THE TINY MEALS, EVEN IF ITS FOR A CHILD!
This is a fairly old burger house in Kansas City. It is also famous for the locals. The burger patty is thin so I recommend ordering it in double. Skyscraper shake size is 3 adults, but as big as you can not finish it, please think carefully before ordering ~~ Ah! The Fried Onion Ring was also delicious!
This appears to be one of if not the last location, unfortunately the other locals are gone so if you are craving classic Winsteads steakburger and malt you've got to make the journey down to the Plaza, this local is showing some age as well and could use new upholstery and Springs in the booths. Wishing best of luck to the continuation of this Kansas city classic, let's keep supporting this local eatery.
Bland, overpriced food. Steakburgers are underwhelming and the taste is very average. Fries are as plain as plain can get, no salt and only one ketchup packet. Drive thru service was slow and poor quality, had to repeat order 5+ times for just three items. Took more than 20 minutes just to get a cheeseburger, a chicken sandwich, and an order of fries. Save your money and go somewhere else, food here is average, unseasoned, and just bland.
The limeade - naturally. Thank you for great burgers since I was 9 years old. I'm 60 now & keep coming back.
Winsteads is always a good place for us. Great food at a price you really can't beat!
Love to old style burgers. Great place for a malt too!
Great breakfast! Pancakes were delicious and so were the hash browns. Actually everything was great.
Burgers are ok. Fries are served unsalted and lack any kind of seasoned flavor. But that's what I'M used to. Worth it though.
Please don't shut down the KC Plaza location. I have been eating there & other Winstead locations on & off for 55 years. It's has a lot of memories, and great comfort food.
It works in a pinch but Not a place I would go out of my way to go back to.
Come here and see my main man Walter, he will treat you right!
Extremely fast and friendly service. Food always great as expected. The best limeades in town. A KC classic. Need I say more?
A classic burger joint that belongs in the ranks of the finest. If you want an authentic steakburger, onion rings, milk shakes, and other timeless diner fare, this is one of Kansas City's icons. Bring 3 or more people to split the Skyscraper shake.
Excellent. You know what you're getting when you go there.. Great service and some good, old-fashioned fun (in the form of food).
A fine, good, excellent and very, very pleasureable time and experience there that time, thank you. . .!!
Just spent $20 on food in the drive through and have them a $5 tip. Got home and had less than half the food that I ordered. Then called to resolve the issue and got put on hold for 10 minutes and hung up because it seemed as though they had forgotten about me.
Why does Winsteads quality vary sooo much. 5 stars one day and 0 stars the next. Id stop going but I am a junkie. Double with cheese and everything, onion rings, and a shake.
Excellent service. Food is good. Lunchtime busy but they get you in pretty fast.
I enjoyed their triple with cheese. Surprisingly delicious, and not greasy either.
Last several times I've eaten there on plaza location the hamburger buns were totally stale yet i kept going back hoping it was just a bad day for them bc i have always loved winsteads but this honestly had me not going back now. Tired of wasting my money.
Not a fan of a place that needs police presence on a Saturday night. Food was ok
Always kind and considerate service. The food is delicious.
Historic hamburger joint. And it's located right next to the Country Club Plaza.
A Kansas City landmark. Classic 'smash' style burgers. If you ask for onion on yours, they will give you a whole slice, so only say yes if you really want that. The 'Skyscraper Soda' is a giant milkshake, essentially served in a vase. Order it.
Fun atmosphere and location, we were unimpressed by the food but it was fast and convienient.
building needs an update,yu can see where there changed out booth seating &it just doesn't look good to see stains on wall where original booths were...also my waitress wasn't the friendliest...came in with our team &they had alot of change..her facial expression really ticked me off because the kids worked hard to pay for all the bill of 174.00 plus gratuity &for waitress to turn &look at the kids(ages range from 6-12)with her face in disarray was very rude...I had they money to pay with card but our kids wanted to pay for their food so we allowed...waitress was upset because she had to count out 174.00 from bills &change but I feel it should not have mattered due to it was from kids..teaching them how to pay from what they earned &before waitress came to table kids had already counted themselves with the help of our team staff...I just say in future take in consideration kids may be paying their bill &accept what they are paying with whether it be card, bills,or change...¬ to say half the kids had to wait longer for food due to waitress not taking order correctly &kids still were fine said thank yu &left a extra tip yeah it was change but they still wanted waitress to have it....so please take in consideration how the next person big or small may honestly feels when in your establishment...thank yu
Old school, super-tasty, complete with floats and malts.
I will stop and eat here every time I'm in Kansas city
Great food Hamburger was just right and prices very reasonable
Service friendly and helpful
This place is Steak and Shake 2.0. Worse actually. I ve never been to a fast food restaurant (24/7 at that) that s closed as frequently as they are. Literally every other week they re closed for some sort of maintenance . Not wasting my time or money coming here again. Closed more often than they re open. Not a good look for a 24/7 place.
It's a good smashed burger. The mayo is sweet, which I'm not a fan of personally. They charge extra for tomatoes and lettuce, which is neither here nor there, because if you don't like those things you don't have to pay for them. Very tasty. We also had a milk shake, which had a wonderful malt flavour, and was the right consistency. The fries were nothing special, and could benefit from more modern techniques to make them more crispy. There salad had less lettuce than the other components combined, which was not good.
Amazing!!! Great food, decent prices. Service was polite and prompt - we only waited 5-10 minutes for our food. Also, if you come during Happy Hour you can get this gargantuan shake for like $3! We'll definitely be coming back.
50's style diner on the Plaza, where the family has gone for years. Skyscraper milkshakes are an experience every kids needs to have once if in KC!
The drive through is open 24/7 and they have great shakes, tots, and rings. Plenty of reasons to go back.
Winstead's is a Cultural Highlight in Kansas City. Best burgers in the Midwest. Whenever I'm in KC I HAVE to have lunch there.
A classic single Winstead with the works always feels like comfort food to me. Tator tots are great, fries golden. Even the chili deserves some attention!
Can I give this place a Michelin star for classic Americana food? Is that a thing? Wish it was. Burger was perf. Fries were perf. Vanilla ice cream hit the spot.
I miss the juke box but whatcha gonna do the times they are a changing, but what hasn't changed are these delicious burgers. The service was attentive and well timed. I'd say everything was on point!
Pros: good food, cheap, friendly service, okay bathrooms.
Cons: the place needs a new coat of paint and it'll get the 5th star from me.
It was really cute! Their burgers are top tier but their fries AND tatpr tots are very bland.
No salt on and drink was flat and the burger was aright over all it was expensive meal for the quality of the whole meal.
The food and ice cream is wonderful. Great atmosphere like an old time steak n shake. Prices very reasonable for a family.
Great burgers and cherry limeade. The drive through is open late and the people are friendly.
6/25/18
I've been going to winsteads my whole life and until today have never had a bad meal. The drive through had only two cars so I didn't think there would be a long wait. After about 15 minutes we got to the window. The time was about 10:15 pm. The drink order was not ready and we waited five more minutes . When we got the food, 3 single winsteads with cheese it was ice cold and the burgers were smashed. The 50/50 (1/2 fries 1/2 tots) were also ice cold.
I hope this is an isolated incident because the guy at the window was new and forgot to make drinks while the food was cooking. I can no longer recommend this Winsteads but ill probably visit again and hope they make up for this bad meal.
8/3/19 ate inside and it was very good. Our waitress Riley was terrific. We had a skyscraper shake that comes with a song and was a real hoot! It's big enough for 3 or 4 people.
Winstead's Diner is a traditional burger and fountain shop that has been serving customers since 1943. The diner is known for its delicious steakburgers made from fresh-ground, high-quality lean beef with no additives. In addition to their famous burgers, Winstead's also offers the best shakes and malts in town.
At Winstead's Diner, quality is of utmost importance. The restaurant uses only the freshest ingredients to ensure that every meal served is of the highest quality. The beef used in their steakburgers is sourced from local farms and ground fresh daily on-site. This ensures that each burger patty is juicy, flavorful, and free from any additives or preservatives.
The menu at Winstead's Diner features a variety of classic American dishes such as hot dogs, fries, onion rings, and milkshakes. However, it's their steakburgers that have earned them a loyal following over the years. Each burger comes with all the fixings you would expect - lettuce, tomato, pickles - but it's the perfectly cooked patty that steals the show.
One thing that sets Winstead's apart from other diners is their commitment to customer service. From the moment you walk through the door until you leave satisfied after your meal; you'll be treated like family by friendly staff who are always happy to help.
In addition to dine-in service at their various locations across town; Winstead’s also offers takeout options for those on-the-go or looking for a quick bite during lunchtime rush hour traffic.
If you're looking for an authentic American dining experience with great food and excellent service; look no further than Winstead’s Diner!
