Lots of fun. The slopes were icy today. Mother nature hasn't been kind to the east coast skier this year.
Good ski and snowboarding slopes for beginners and intermediate riders, lines are never long during week days but could take up to an half of an hour on weekends, staff are nice most of the time and will help you when needed
Whitetail is a cool little ski resort with fast lifts and decent snow machines. The day after an ice storm they were able to reopen with a light layer of powder to get people skiing again.
Definitely a disappointment, limited trails, slow lift, no bar to unwind at after the runs are done.
Nice facilities and ok trails. However, over commercialized and wasn't impressed with the rentals or the over all experience.
Excellent snow tubing. Recommend arriving early and you will get lots of reps.
Nicely maintained slopes. Our 5 years old daughter's first time skiing. We went for evening time slot which turned out to be perfect for us since beginner slopes were comparatively less crowded, parking was easy to find and we paid less money for lift tickets. We are planning to back before season ends.
Great selection of trails for various abilities
Efficient service including transportation to and from lots. Beer and wine tent outdoors on weekends. Easily accommodates large crowds. Great selection of food.
Great place to ski and snowboard. My kid enjoyed it there!! She also got a lesson and masterd how to ski in one day!!
Great fun place to take the family. The man made snow was awesome. You cannot tell it didn't fall naturally from the sky. We loved the snow tubing!
I went there with my kids and had the worst experience of my life. My kids were in the training area with the instructor s were very mean to them and would not let me check them out even though they were both crying. They acted like they owned my kids while in training. When I try to complain to women that worked there she said that complain to the manager. But they were not available. This place is the worst experience I would never go back there.
Great place to snowboard/ski! And if you're a student, on Wednesdays during the 2nd half of winter, lift tickets and rentals are heavily discounted! (Same goes for Liberty and Roundtop)
For a new rider, the greens are pretty friendly here. The sidewinder is definitely a good place to start for your first time. The bunny hills won't teach you anything.
For the more advanced rider, the blacks and blues are more challenging than this resort's siblings, Roundtop and Liberty. From my experience, Whitetail has more vertical real estate and Liberty has more horizontal real estate (has a back side to ride down).
In terms of terrain/trick parks, its sister resort liberty has bigger and better ones with j bars included. Although it is nice that this resort has 2 short trick parks located midway through green and at the bottom of black.
A great resort to have fun with your friends and family.
DO NOT USE CHILD CAMP/LESSONS!!!
This review is specifically aimed at the Kids Mountain Camp program. I recently registered and dropped my child off for an afternoon half-day camp (1:00pm-3:30pm). I can tell you, without reservation, that this was the worst organized and least effective "program" that I could have ever imagined.
First and foremost, BOTH ski boots were put on incorrectly on my child. The plastic shells of each boot were tucked inside the liner, causing my child significant pain and resulting in an open wound on one of his feet. This was only discovered after the so-called lesson by me as I was removing his boots. This is totally unacceptable!
Second, the foreign exchange students from South America who "worked" at the center were as enthusiastic about their jobs as DMV employees and as incompetent of "instructors" as I have ever seen! For example, multiple minutes would go by before children who had lost their balance would be picked up or helped up. Meanwhile, these employees were oblivious and inattentive to their students.
Third, the manager of the kids/lesson center was unprofessional and indifferent about my concerns about how my child's ski boots were put on and responded by stating "they usually do a better job of that."
Lastly, DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME OR $120 for this or any of the other kids programs that this place offers. I am disgusted by this place and by their employees' lack of attention and care for the children under their care and guidance. Do yourself a favor - go somewhere else!
Whitetail is the closest and best decent ski area close to DC, about an hour and a half drive. It has new facilities, lodge, restaurants, high speed quad lifts. It's relatively small, I think 1000 VD or less. For some reason it doesn't have very good grooming, even first thing in the morning it seems choppy.
This has good terrain for several different types of skiers. The bunny hills are great for first timers, the long blues are my favorite intermediate skiing in the region (although they're all pretty similar to each other), and the three blacks on the back side each have different feels to keep advanced skiers engaged. In contrast to Liberty, I'd say that Whitetail has better intermediate and advanced terrain, while Liberty has better greens. One major downside of Whitetail is that each type of terrain is in its own area, so if you have a group of different levels, you can't ski together (as opposed to some resorts where you can all ride the lift together and then some people can do steep moguls down the front while others meander down a winding green). A second negative is that there isn't a good bridge between the greens and the blues. If you're a beginner skier, you might find the greens too boring and the blues above your ability level. For someone in that spot, Liberty can be a good option to help work your way up. Locally, if you're doing a weekend trip, the extra drive to Wisp or Snowshoe is definitely worthwhile, as both of those are bigger and have more variety in terrain options, but the drive from DC makes this a really appealing option for day or evening trips.
A lot of people on here are complaining about lines and conditions, it's a poor year for snow, so know the mountain you are visiting! There are live cams, and conditions updated hourly and if you would read about tickets... it says that if you are not pleased with the conditions, etc within the first hour, you can get a return ticket for another day! If you don't want to deal with lines go early or while everyone is still in school or work... it goes for any mountain! Plan your trip intelligently. I absolutely love Whitetail and consider it one of the best to hit in PA!
I have been coming here since it first opened. For a east coast ski resort within an easy drive of the DC area this is about as good as it gets. Nearly 50% more vertical drop than its sister resorts at Roundtop and Liberty and many more trails that them the others. The facilities are very, clean and up to date. I have recently enrolled my two children in ski and snowboarding school for the first time and it is well run.
Really good, enjoy it everytime I go there. Lifts are fast, trails always have great snow. Recommend too anyone that wants to ski near Maryland, Virginia and Pennsylvania
Went on a cold day so it wasn't too crowded. They were actively making a lot of snow, which I understand, but it ended up blowing straight into the faces of people on one of the slow lifts.
Night skiing is the best. Day time is very crowded.
Not bad for east coast skiing. Quick drive from Washington D.C. Lift lines move pretty quick. Prices appear standard too.
Incredibly fun snow tubing with our family. One big fail for Whitetail was the staff. Three stood out as being really funny and kind, the rest were incredibly rude. If you are dealing with families, kindness goes a long way. Otherwise, the fun tubing with my family and friends made up for it.
It was the last day of the season. Most runs were still open and the snow was good. The slopes were quite so skiing was great.
I signed my girlfriend and I up for a beginner lesson since this was only her second time skiing and I have to say, the lesson was great and our instructor, Rob, was fantastic. He was extremely knowledgeable and the 90 minute class covered all the basics. We'd taken one other lesson at one of our local mountains and it paled in comparison.
I saw a lot of other lessons going on as well, covering a wide variety of techniques and skill levels. One was taking kids through the terrain park, another was showing adults how to make and land small jumps (I'm sure there was a lot more, that's just what I could see/hear from the lift as we rode by).
As other have stated, the lines on the weekend can get pretty long. It wasn't too bad in the morning, but by lunch we waited about 15 minutes to get on to the EZ Rider Quad, and after lunch it was over 20 minutes on the same lift. Not really sure what you can do about that, the mountain is only so big...
If you can, I'd suggest going during the week. Food is expensive, just like any other resort.
Snow conditions were okay on the green runs, it looks like they'd been doing their best to make snow overnight, but it was all pretty granular. There was one particular corner on Sidewinder that was really icy, but everything else was ski-able.
I love Whitetail. Out of the 3 local DC resorts, it is by far the best for natural terrain that isn't too groomed and produces trails that are unique from one another. They even have a mini terrain park in the bunny slopes that make for a great time for newbies. On the negative, never go to these resorts on Saturdays during prime season. My pictures show how crazy it can get. We waited forever to get on a green lift. Now, if you ski black trails only then you can go anytime and have zero wait. These trails are separate from the blue lift and green lift. This is a positive and negative of white tail. Positive for advanced skiiers.
Very nice staff and well maintained.. Very expensive to take the whole family.
It's your typical ski resort. They do their best to get you situated and out on the slopes in no time. I have found that going during the middle of the week at night is the best...no lines! Weekends can be iffy; it all depends on the weather. Downside to Whitetail - their lodge is not the best, but then again you are there to ski/board. Also, they seem to drag the city-slickers in from DC who are complete novices and before you know it the place is overrun and it is just not as enjoyable. Overall, the runs on the mountain can entertain any skill level.
No comment. You might try that...for certain folks only.
Great snow making accommodations as well as dining it's nice to see a resort that puts money back into itself. This year two new restaurants. As always best snowmaking around best bang for your buck in the DC metro area. New to the 2020 season they've added a bar area in the Solstice restaurant.
Great place to go skiing or even snow tubing but needs more parking because overfill easily during the winter months
Definetely the best ski resort in the DC/NoVA area .... anyway it is small, with about 1000ft Vertical Drop ... But despite this, it is basically a ski stadium, it is nice and really well mantained. Snow is always good even in difficult weather condition. There are slopes and lifts for any ski-level. There is a ski rental where you can get in with sneakers and get out ready for skiing. There is a restaurant/lodge with a good burger and several other options. There is a ski and snowboard school if you are a beginner, and at least 3 or 4 trails if you are advanced (not very long, but really good for training and for fun). Colorado is the best (4hrs flight from DC) Vermont is great (10hrs driving from DC).... and this is the reason why I cannot give 5 stars rating to Whitetail.... but for a day trip from DC, in less than 2hrs, you can really enjoy skiing.... and also an incredible view from the highest point of the area.
Close to the D.C. Metro area, great hills to snowboard on and great customer service.
Nice and close to Baltimore. Good vertical. Shame they have to make so much snow #thanksGlobalWarming. Drives cost way up. Still skiing today 3/15
It was a mediocre experience and is a mediocre ski resort. There are better ones in the surrounding areas. The staff and management is uncaring and is unprofessional. They falsify information. Your money and your time will be better used somewhere else. Bypass this ski resort . It simply isn't worth your time and experience.
Great simple ski getaway resort. Nice and compact without feeling too cramped. Can get a little crowded, but the snow is always in good condition (when the weather cooperates)
Very fun. Used to be scared of tubing... This alleviated my tubing fears.
Very beautiful venue for a wedding! The staff did a great job.
Nice place for fisrt timer and beginners. Coaching crew were very friendly and patient. The snow was harder than it supposed to be but still acceptable. Strongly recommend!
The best out of the 3 sister resorts imo. Staff was very friendly. Lodge and cafe was well maintained and clean as well as the restrooms. High speed lift is great. The terrain park has lots of box and rail futures but lacked good tabletops.
Very friendly and attentive staff and instructors. They are always super accommodating.
Great small ski hill. The front is crowded so if you can ski blacks go to the back.
I took my niece snow-tubing here and she loved it! I loved it too because there was a fire right beside the slides to keep me warm. That was a nice touch. It wasn't too crowded, and it was easy to find a parking space. All of the staff were kind and friendly. I will definitely be here again.
Although I am not a fan of skiing, today I had the instructor Marty at Whitetail Resort and the lesson that I received made me actually enjoy it! He was so patient and kind with how he taught everyone and I was a lot better going down the slope after having a lesson with him!! If you go, you should request Marty for yours!
Had a good time skiing at the Whitetail for the first time on a weather perfect Sunday. It is about 1.5 hours driving so not too far. It was less crowded in the morning, but by the afternoon after lunch, the lines, especially the easier ride, were getting longer. It really took about 30 minutes to get in line, on the lift, then come down the green. The food court is also pretty big, so it is not too hard to find a chair and sit and relax a little bit after skiing a few rounds in the morning.
Beat place for a beginner to learn ski or snowboard. Regular packages included the class for a nice price. You are intermedian or expect level, you will find a ride for you. Food is available with multiple options. Pants and jacket are not available for rent. Also it is important to mention that globes are must that required.
Nice family atmosphere with good equipment, high-speed lifts, a helpful staff and a wide range of food options.
Whitetail is amazing! A very family friendly resort.
Very nice resort. Great, challenging terrain. Good snowmaking system.
Cool place to go snow boarding. And snow tubing.
Try to avoid holidays.
Only 1 hotel close by.
The customer service is top notch. Everyone is kind and goes out of their way to help. Bathrooms are clean. We had a great time snow tubing for the evening. Prices are a little high but we brought a lot of friends and were able to get a group rate.
I was surprised at the quality of the snow being it was all man made. Very courteous staff. Very professional. A special shout out to John on the ski patrol. Thanks for your assistance
Very nice long run (longer than Roundtop, the closest shi resort). Remind me of a ski resort in Colorado in some ways. I enjoyed my time here. There are restaurant and food court here as well.
Our family has been purchasing night passes here for the past 5 years and we absolutely love it. Can be a little crowded at times, but it's definitely my favorite resort around.
Skiing and tubing is fun for sure. But they also have a golf course that is really fun if you like holes with varying elevation.
Best skiing near DC. Great adaptive skiing program!
Super fun! 10/10 would go again! I do wish there was a bit more to do tho.. but it was fun!
Fun family environment. Snowtubing was loads of fun and laughs!!!
Definitely one of the best places to ski within a few hours.
Lots of fun!
It costs about the normal amount of money and is well run. Kids had a lot of fun on the tubing hill.
