Usually really enjoy going to the Zoo but it was a disappointing visit this time - maybe the time of year (mid-July)? Not many animals out and about, the Tiger was pacing in his enclosure which is looking tired and run down. Emu was pacing in the bushes of Meet the Neighbours, not interested in any attention - very different behaviour to previous visits. Saw a dead rock pigeon in the ostrich area and it's mate desperately wanting it to be ok Didn't notice any keepers around.
Monkey island/s are overgrown so can't see much going on there. No sheep, chickens or penguins to see at Meet the Locals.
Good experiences - wonderful walk-through aviary with the Kea, amazing to be so close to them. The Twilight, awesome experience watching the Kiwi wandering around.
Really like seeing the smaller monkeys too - tamarins, squirrel monkeys, lemurs, pygmy marmosets and co-habit creatures (agouti, parrots etc). Also nice not having so many visitors there at the same time. No doubt we will visit again.

What a fantastic zoo! We had a great day (Dad, two boys 4 and 1). We walked the whole site in the day with loads of time at some animals. We had a lovely play on the playground, saw all the animals bar the tiger (Dad saw him hiding in the back). Very impressed by the staff who clearly love their animals, the keepers gave fantastic talks (4yr old's favorite animal became the sun bear after the talk given by a very passionate keeper) and all other staff were super helpful and friendly. So glad we joined the zoo crew and looking forward to our next visit.

I really enjoyed going to the zoo! My girl and I did a meerkat encounter for our birthdays and it was such a fantastic experience. The keepers were so knowledgeable and we learned a lot. One even offered to take my phone so they could take pictures and I could enjoy the encounter. Came away with some great snaps! We wandered around for hours afterwards and I could happily do it all again. The food at the kiosk was delicious and cheaper than I expected. Not just your usual fast food either which was cool. This place is an absolute gem. The team look like they've been working hard to modernise the enclosures and make the whole experience immersive. A must see (and not just once!)

Fairly reasonably priced for entry but food is insanely expensive at the internal cafe. Can get a bit crowded but lots to see and do. Very informative and has a well priced gift shop at the end. Good for a family day out or a date.

Our first time here, a little disappointed. Didn't really see many of the big animals.
They were either in another area of the zoo?? or maybe it was a little too hot for them to come outside. Nice big zoo, plenty of space, beautifully presented just a little lacking in animals

Best zoo in New Zealand, plenary of live interactions with animals, including feeding and educational talks. Extremely well looked after. Our son asked when we could come here again same evening after visiting it which is as good a review as it gets:)

A very nice place for kids. Lots of playground in between animal lookout. Animals were placed in spacious places designed as if they're in their own habitat which is nice. On the other hand the animals might've rests between the tree or bushes that makes them hard to see.

Zoo is maintained very nicely. Support staff is very useful and good at their work. Animals look to be kept in an atmosphere which interferes least with their natural habitat. Their are signs put up correctly at appropriate places.

This is a relatively small zoo. I came in with an hour left and had time to basically walk through it. I was actually dissapointed because half of the animals were not even there (popular ones like the lion, tiger, bear etc.) and there was no way you could find out it until you got to the exhibit itself.

Excellent zoo with lots of animal feeding and educational talks. Vetinary hospital on site where vets are happy to explain the treatments they're undertaking. Kiwis a little elusive, but nicely laid out enclosure!

A wonderful, playful and just-the-right length visiting experience for families and those wanting to see animals in an environment which celebrates them but also endeavors to give visitors an excellent zoo experience. Well done Wellington.

We took 4 grandchildren between the age of 3 and 10 to the zoo. It was a lovely warm day with just enough wind to keep you comfortable. The 3 year old wanted to see giraffes, the 4 year old otters, 6 year old kiwi and 10 year old the red panda. Grandparents wanted to see the new chimp enclosure. We managed to see all requests so that was great. My only complaint would be we never came across water drinking fountains and there seemed to be only one place to buy a coffee and ice blocks. Otherwise it was a great day out and we will be back to see the areas we missed.

Small zoo but very well presented & educational. If you're looking for a feed, either bring your own food or go down to mojo next to the gift shop. Kamala's/the grazing post is disappointing has almost nothing to offer.

A bit expansive but children under 3 are free.

A bit expansive but children under 3 are free.

Great moment for the kids: you can feed, touch some animals during the visit. There is also many playground in the zoo for the kids.
Well documented.
helpfull people.

When you come with a GPS, it lead you to a parking far away from the zoo entry. There is a more nearest one (near the zoo entry, please follow the zoo entry address instead), but it seems often full.

We came in the afternoon. There is a show with the kiwis and the penguins (2:30 pm and 3:00pm). They are really near from the zoo entry, so if you want to view these show, manage your time arrival.

Every time I visit a zoo I'm disapointed by the space animals have. And this is the case for this zoo too. this is why I set only 4 stars.

Pretty dissatisfied with the experience. Expensive to get in and most of the animals weren't in the enclosures. There needs to be a warning on their site saying what animals are out and which ones aren't there.

A lovely small zoo. We spent approximately 2 hours there. Many animals. The Apes were incredible. Their outdoor area was under construction. Once that is opened up it will be great for a re-visit. Excellent place to come while you are in Wellington. There were many families out and about with their young ones. Definitely a child friendly zoo and their is not a ridiculous amount of walking to do.

Went to the free neighbors event for the evening and it was a fantastic taste of what's there. Staff were smiling all the time, polite, passionate and really helpful. You can see the zoo is trying to do more than just showcasing animals which is fantastic and a worthy cause especially with the passionate staff working to educate the public.
Great place for all the family to visit and countless play areas for the youngsters.
