When you are in Amsterdam, this museum is a must visit. To avoid disappointment book your visit ahead of time. The audio video system is very helpful and take it, otherwise you will miss the whole visit. What a wonderful collection of Van Gogh paintings. A must see in Amsterdam. Highly recommend adding this to your itinerary!
A must see during your stay in Amsterdam. The museum not only holds a large number of his art work. It also tells the story of Van gogh s life through his art and related stories. More famous in death then he was in life. You should drop in early, but pre book your tickets online for entry into the complex at a set time.
this place was awesome! BUT my only frustration is that they require you to have a reservation to enter, at first glance it sounds like they do a little crowd control so the museum isn't so booked! but they end up letting in waaay to many people! it was a battle to just see some paintings. the floor plan is interesting - they have a large spiral staircase in the middle that you climb up 4 levels. this is slightly exhausting if you have been walking around all day (my case). Every floor was a giant loop with the center removed and a balcony view of the bottem floor looking down. So there were break off rooms and loops around each level the problem was that there were constantly people who would just randomly decide to stop and block up an entire hallway. this became frustrating and it was difficult to even enjoy some photos.
the museum doesn't allow photos inside but I will show you a magnet souvenir from their cool gift shop!
Really cool museum, lot of Van Gogh masterpieces, and not only his works. But unfortunately Starry Night, was not here, but there is Almond Blossom here)
Musy see during trip to Amsterdam. Important booking time visit in prior is a must
If you like to relax and like Van Goghs works of art you should definitely visit. If you haven t got a lot of time on your hands you could also choose to view only the highlights.
Beautiful. Simply wonderful place to visit. The self guided audio tour covers a good amount of Van Gough's growth process and many of his more well known paintings. Does NOT have Starry starry night.
We really enjoyed our visit. Well laid out and spacious museum. Quite a few of VG's more famous paintings have been snapped up by other famous galleries. However, there are still some great paintings to see here and to learn more about his life. A great version of Sunflowers. Wonderful to see two of the Wheatfield... paintings too.
I really enjoyed the chronological layout so you could see how his style developed and blossomed into the latter paintings we love so much.
Very nice experience. Be sure to do the free painting workshop especially if you have kids. We painted Van Gogh's sunflower. Besides all the art work at the museum, the dream experience was nice because it gave perspective on Van Gogh's motivation. Highly recommend the audio component as well because it gives insight on his paintings as well as his life.
Great collection of art mainly by Van Gough but with other artists inspired by his work or those who inspired him - the impressionists. The displays and paintings cover three floors and are accessible by lifts or stairs. Buy timed entry tickets from the ticket office or if you want to avoid the long queues buy the on line line.
Van Gogh and his life. Great art work collection from influence of van Gogh. I could see some of cloud monet and many more. Must visit.
Really well laid out, the mediaguide is worth the extra money to explain parts/ thoughts/ meanings behind parts of the works on display.
Great exhibition, worst anti Covid-19 measures ever. There were too many people in every room, nobody was keeping the 1.5 meters distance, there was nobody fron the staff to control the situation.
Very interesting, the audio tour was very well done. I enjoyed the whole tour would recommend to anyone who visits Amsterdam.
The place is nice and beautiful, but crowded and I expected to see more paintings. If you don't have some famous paintings you can always substitute them with reproductions. Just saying;)
Great place. Recommended to take also the audio guide when visiting.
Yesterday's meeting was the best one in the last couple of weeks! Excellent place!
Take the audio guide please. They did a great job with them.
I've been here before, but I don't remember it as informative as this last trip on August 21. The exhibitions are very nice and well laid out. I really enjoyed my day here until I was told I couldn't take photos. I had asked a staff member on the ground floor if photos were allowed and he stated, yes, but please no flash, avoid getting up close to the art and avoid getting in the way of people. So when a different staff member, rudely came up to me on the second floor to state "No photos!", then walked away from me, I followed him to let him know that I had asked. There was more to this encounter, but the bottom line is that the museum needs to decide if photos are allowed or not so that staff on one floor don't state one answer and another answer on another floor. So when you visit, be prepared to get two answers. I did not take any photos after I was rudely told not to. However, on this same floor, in the same area, I saw many people taking photos after my encounter. The museum is definitely worth a visit.
Enjoyable to see the real paintings by the great man. Now I know why he is said to be one of the best ever artists. The depth and mixed colour you can t see from a photo, within his actual work is amazing. Ensure you book to make sure your not disappointed. Finally theres at staircase to die for.
Book your ticket online in advance, otherwise they can be sold out. No queques, you just enter museum at your time, very comfortable. Nice modern building, you can leave your bags and coats. Also there are elevators. + nice cafe .
No words about Van Gogh paintings! Incredible! Very big collection.
The biggest Vincent van Gogh collection museum. Been here several times and still have new experience and surprise.
Just amazing. It is a must in your visit to Amsterdam, even if you don't appreciate art that much. It is about the fascinating life of Vincent Van Gogh. Entrance is not that expensive and the museum is really beautiful and not that crowded.
It was actually really interesting to learn about this man's story. When you know a couple of things about someone's life you appreciate his paintings and his effort more
Absolutely breathtaking. You can easily spend 3+ hours in there and it will seem like nothing. Great souvenir shops too.
Wonderful experience and the museum is organized in a way to tell a story. I would highly recommend getting an audioguide. You can easily spend hours here.
Incredible experience! A must go for anyone visiting Amsterdam for the first time!
Its really good if this kind of stuff is interesting to you, only down side was that on the day all the shops only took card...
Its a nice Museum close to other amazing ones. Its very difficult to take pictures of the paintings. If you take one, make it carefully since guards will go and tell you to stop. Nice small store too. Wish they had "The starry night" painting but its in another museum and they don't sell anything there of that painting because of copyright.
As a person who doens't visit to many museum, I absolutely loved the Van Gogh. If you want to learn more about his story, this is the place to go to. Also, I felt like I was brought back to time in which he lived, and experienced how life was a painter. And it was not at all as I expected!
Buy tickets in advance.
The museum tells the story well and interesting. Keep in mind that the starry night is not part of the exhibition
Beautiful museum with van Gogh pieces, but also other paintings related to Van Gogh and contemporaries.
Paid (expensive) entrance. Entry is controlled by time slots. It may be wise to reserve ahead (and arrive on time!)
Very good museum. A great step up from the small space they had when I visited ten years ago.
They have a well curated collection, presented logically in periods; well selected partner exhibitions from artists who inspired Van Gogh; well selected and presented companion works from similar artists or muses; a lovely collection of person possessions; fantastic school tours (In dutch I think); a very usable audio guide which a 'highlights' and 'in depth' tour; good visitor facilities including cloakrooms, disabled facilities and bookshop. Furthermore the whole gallery is a manageable size for visitors.
Unfortunately the artist is just so popular that it is crammed even on slow days. The gallery may need to find a more proactive approach to people management such as more floor markings for where to stand, timed tickets or in-house timed events that keep people moving.
It would also be nice for them to leverage their reputation to swap works and have a 'guest piece' on loan from other museums.
Accessible in a square full of museums, modern interior and well-put-together exhibitions. I really enjoyed both their permanent and temporary ones.
A contemporary design which lays out Van Gogh's life in detail: his childhood years, family life, early adulthood, the evolution of his artistic styles, his emotional & psychiatrist issues, his troubled relationships, and ultimately his untimely death. His work is will displayed & described, with extra care to display those canvasses he reused, allowing us to see both sides. Definitely worth your time.
Fantastic museum. We had a great educational experience. Spent 4 hours walking around with headsets. I will be back as there is still a lot more to learn.
The Van Gogh museum is a check off my bucket list. The paintings were breathtaking. There are multiple levels of paintings and a huge gift shop. The story of his life had me mesmerized. It broke my heart to know someone so brilliant was so troubled. I truly believe Van Gogh was the inventor of the selfie. There is one room with nothing but paintings of himself.
Loved the musuem. It was neatly arranged and navigation was smooth.
Bit too successful for it's own good, somewhat overly packed with customers, and yet lacks quite a few painting you'd expect there, for it's cost, the nearby Stedelijk is a much more pleasant experience, in this beholder's eye
So much to see. Definitely gonna spend 3 hours here.
One of the highlights of my stay in Amsterdam. The museum offered a detailed picture of Van Gogh's life and had quite a good selection of his paintings. However, if you expect to only find artwork by Van Gogh himself you may be surprised to find that there is additionally plenty by his inspirations, contemporaries and modern day artists who he influenced.
Amazing collection in this museum, highly recommended for visit with family.
Must see... even if you are not fan... its great way to learn about this great artist
Definitely a must-visit in Amsterdam. Wasn't a huge fan of Van Gogh's work and barely knew anything about him to be honest, but I really enjoyed learning about his art and his life. So surprised to know about his deep connection with Japanese prints! The exhibition was well-curated and not at all overwhelming, but you could still easily spend at least 3 hours here. It's free entry with the I-Amsterdam card (which btw is a really good deal!)
This museum is well laid out and has every piece displayed perfectly. The audio tour adds a lot to the experience! If you're a fan of Van Gogh or impressionism be sure to check this out. Also, no flash photography, some tourists lost their phones and such!
The museum itself is fine, but they have a stupid no photography rule which is enforced very arbitrarily and very rudely. Ruins the whole experience.
While the amount of pieces they have is amazing, this is by far the worst museum visiting experience I have had. It is extremely crowded with no sense of traffic flow. They control when you buy tickets which means they should try to control the crowds a little better. The lighting leads to glares all over the pieces that you can t really go close up to see Van Goghs brush work - which is one of the aspects of van goghs that I was most excited to see develop. Overall just not a great experience.
Amazing! I can't find another word to describe the experience!
I skipped the audio guide in order to listen to music, but the works were so well curated that I felt like I was witnessing the unraveling of Van Gogh's mind. By the time I reached his final piece, I was a complete mess. Go here now! (Pun intentionally avoided)
4th visit to the museum, yet same positive emotions! Must visit place in Amsterdam!
Really great experience and excellent displays and explanations of Van Gogh's work and life. The multi-media tour is well worth the extra price.
Loved it, potato eaters is one of my favorite works of art!
Large exhibition, very nice building and a lot of room to circulate around the paintings. However Two comments: the descriptions are written so small that you have to be 'on' the painting to read them and thus blocking the view of the other visitors. The second: many paintings have a poor light...
The audio guide is fabulous. Well worth every cent.
I've always loved coming to make a visit when visiting family and friends. I've spent many an hour enjoying Vincent's creations for some reason my favorites are his potato people sketches and paitings.. What I appreciated more then anything this time is the suggestion by staff to participate in the family tour via the provided device what an incredible way for my four year old and I to enjoy the museum together and grow together in better understanding the art of Van Gogh. Thank you staff!!
As good as it gets when learning about Van Gogh s personal and artistic journey. A must see.
A must-see for the those who love Van Gogh s work! Be sure to book a ticket ahead of time though.
Finally got to see and learn about Van Gogh s sunflower painting. I recommend doing the audio tour too. No photos allowed of his paintings
Very well organised, with some fun interactive experiences. A good experience all together.
Very good museum to explore van gogh's life. Treat for art lovers.
Very good museum. Photos not allowed, a lot of emphasis on the gift shop and things for sale. Very friendly staff.
Worth to see, great place. Big art gallery where you can admire art for hours.
Great for children as well. All at the front desk for the Child treasure map
You will leave this museum appreciating van gogh s art more but really disliking him as a person.
Highly recommended! The audio guide was very helpful. I have heard stories about Van Gogh before but I think a lot of them were myth. It also helped me understood the impressionism much better :)
Beautiful museum that really tells the story of Vincent Van Gogh (and Theo!)! If you are in Amsterdam, this is a must-do activity. I highly recommend purchasing tickets online in advance, as this museum can get busy!
The Van Gogh museum was wonderful, the art, the cafe, and the audio tour included. This museum holds many of the most famous works by Van Gogh, Sunflowers and many portraits. It is essential to have a reservation, but this can be made online the day of. Plan to eat brunch or lunch in the cafe, the food is fantastic and the view is wonderful overlooking a park surrounded by the city's best museums.
A well rounded collection on all things Van Gogh, outlining his life, work and his relationship with his brother. Eye opening and enriching experience.
An absolutely wonderful time, extraordinarily interesting and learnt things about Van Gogh I never knew. The displays and paintings were exquisite with a wonderful lay out of the floors. Especially enjoyed the Sunflowers exhibit!
The ultimate collections of Van Gogh. If ur a fan, do visit the place!
Excellent Hockney exhibition, the main reason we went to Amsterdam this time. Van Gogh work is amazing and it's great to see it in person. Museum is bright and airy with helpful staff.
One of the best museums I visited in my pretty long life! Many wonderful pictures in a very clever sequence path.
Fantastic museum! Only thing that could be improved is the size and placement of the information boards. The museum is very busy on the weekends and the small size, poor contrast and low placement on the wall of the information texts meant that only a handful of people could read them at a time.
Good place to know more about Van Gogh in a general way.
Absolutely wonderful! If you are a Van Gogh fan it s a must see! One of my favorite artists and to be able to see these masterpieces up close felt like a dream. The paintings seem to come alive, the brushstrokes and colors so much more vivid than I previously thought (even on the initial more subdued pieces). The longer you looked into the paintings, the more colors and brushstrokes you saw. Van Gogh s life story and interaction with other prominent artists is fascinating with excerpts from letters and personal quotes used throughout timeline. The use of audio headsets gives you a further insight into a number of his works and at your own pace. If you are not a fan you may still find the art and history interesting and museum layout is well thought out and accessible. One of my fellow companions came away a new Van Gogh fan . I suggest you pre-buy your tickets online so you don t miss out. Enjoy!
The Japanese Prints exhibit was amazing. One of the best curated shows I have ever seen. They were able to put together so much previously unseen works as well as the actual Japanese prints that Van Gogh owned.
Not only you will familiarize with many of Van Gogh's pictures and sketches, but you will have an opportunity to investigate his wonderful but tragic life story.
Amazing space and perfect for an half day trip in Amsterdam! It s not too big (Which can be intimidating - think about national gallery in London! Which you might need at least 2-3 days to see everything) and with the multimedia guide you learn from the professional! The museum is very well designed - you start from top floor and goes downstairs. They have so many insights about Van Gogh s life you will definitely learn something new. Be prepared for lots of sunflowers, cherry blossoms, and farms lives.
Try to reach Museumplein or the Museum Square in early hours, preferably with in 9AM. You will face less queue in entry of Van Gogh Museum. But if you are there around 3PM, its only your luck, to get a smooth entry! Rest enjoy yourself..
Very good, layout, instructions and services, abit disappointed that most of the well known paintings were not there including Sunflowers?! This is the Van Gogh museum after all, lots of people travel along way to see these works of art
If you are in Amsterdam, you absolutely MUST go here. It is amazing to see SO MANY Van Gough paintings all in one place. There are many self-portraits and even some from his youth. There is also a collection of his letters to his brother on display to give a better idea of what he was like as a person. This museum more than any other I have been to, turned Vincent from an artist on a pedestal, to a man to struggled much of his life.
