The works of Van Gogh are absolutely stunning, but the museum could be improved in some ways.
The museum hosts many of the most famous paintings plus drawings, sketches, letters and various objects. These are displayed following the different phases of the painter's life and are accompanied by detailed explanations and anecdotes from his life.
Many know Van Gogh only for being a bit crazy and don't realize how prolific and hard working he was, producing several hundred paintings in just 10 years of artistic career. On his later days he was producing almost one new painting per day.
Now the negatives. I felt the light was a bit low and the descriptions printed too small. The museum can get really crowded as it is one of the most popular destinations in Amsterdam. Better signage and crowd management could help with congestion. It would also help if the opening times were extended.

Visits have to be planned, you can not go there spontaneously. Buy them online or wait in line to get it there. One ticket is 20 and you can only stay in the museum for 1 hour (at least that's what it says on the ticket). But since people stay in there for longer the museum is full and you can not enjoy a single masterpiece.

Twenty years ago I'd give it 5*, but it's so wedged and controlled with more demand than the gallery can cope with. The presentation suffers from over-interpretation of all facets of Vincent's life, influences, friendships and mental state. Fine for art history students but it spreads out his actual paintings too thinly.

This place was very cool. Gotta see a ton of his works. The history of his life and family Be 15 minutes early to be in front of line. Might have to order tickets a day or so early.

Very nice museum filled with Van Goghs greatest works of art. The audio-guide takes you on a story through his entire life, explaining every painting and the story behind it. They also have a great shop and when you finish you can rest on the grass in the near by park. Though the museum does get a little crowded at times and I wish you could take pictures.

This was a great experience, especially when you are high! Good price and takes a good couple of hours to walk around as there are soo many paintings. Also goes through Van Gogh's life story, which is very interesting and sad. Price is fair too.

Beautiful museum with extensive collection of paintings, drawings and letters by Van Gogh and other artists that were close to the artist. Lovely cafe on site to finish off the trip. Only advice would be to get there early if possible to take it all in ahead of the crowds and see the most famous of his paintings

A very well designed and conceptualized exhibition. The exhibition shows the gradual influence of family, social ties and other artists on van Gogh's development as a person and artist.

It's always a privilege to see a museum dedicated to one artist, since you can really see the influences and evolution of the painter. Make sure you book your ticket in advanced, they only sell online and for specific time slots. Also, no photos of the artwork are allowed.

Simple amazing one of the best museum experiences I have ever had. Note book a ticket online, as they sell out and lines can be long, arrive 15 mins before your slot, they wont allow you in any earlier

19 entry and then an extra 5 for the audio guide, just felt a bit much for the overall experience. It was incredibly busy and we went in February, can't imagine what it would be in peak season.

This is a must see in Amsterdam. For someone who is not an art connoisseur yet a lover of history and innate talent this is such an easy way to appreciate the significance of Van Gogh. The museum is so informative yet almost effortless in its presentation. My 16 year old was enthralled, yet the least artistic you could meet.

The full experience, from the entrance, to audio guide, to presentation of artworks, the restaurant, and best of all, the staffs, was a truly amazing experience!!!! I would give 6* for the first class experience to this museum.

The paintings were beautifully curated and the explanations sufficient.

A staff at the restaurant was kind, he let us grab a quick coffee eventhough the cashier was closing.

I lost my passport there!! I called them twice and they didn't find anything. But once they did, they contacted me on facebook and asked my address to send it to. So caring, kind and professional!!!! All the staffs there are to be applauded and congratulated.

I lost my passport and gained even more wonderful experience in Amsterdam :D

I spend 6 hours here as the work is just amazing! I really enjoyed the museum as it does an amazing job in telling the story of Van Gogh - his art, thoughts and life. I found learning art in this way much more inspiring than just seeing a lot of paintings at a national museum or so. You do not have to be an art lover to be able to enjoy this museum.

Facilities-wise, make sure to book your tickets in advance (yes, everyone in that long queue have a ticket). They have a free cloakroom and amazing toilet facilities, as well as a good souvenir shop (on two floors). (They also have a restaurant which I have not tried.) You will be guided by an audio guide which have different plans ready for you depending on the time you have. The museum could be packed at times, especially around the famous pieces of Van Gogh.

Excellent museum. Well organised and they keep numbers to a manageable level but you need to book online. Lots of his most iconic paintings are here including one of the sunflowers paintings, the potato eaters and his bedroom.

A bit small and of course only van gogh paintings. Next to that you have too wait in line for a long time, so it's better to buy the tickets online.
If you really like his paintings it can be interesting to learn more about him but otherwise I'd definitely recommend to go elsewhere like rijksmuseum which has nice paintings and other things and is much bigger.

I strongly recommend using audio guide, it allows to learn story of van Gogh and adds a lot to paintings and paintings' descriptions. You can pick between shorter route that audio guide will lead you through or listen to chosen audio in random order. Museum not only shows van Gogh's paintings but also explains his painting style and tells painter's story: how he became a real artist and what was his life like. Thanks to the museum I admire van Gogh art much more than before visiting the museum.

How to find the parking (the museum is great): From the right lane driving north-northwest on van Baerlestraat, drive up this ramp at the end of the lane onto the sidewalk and across the bicycle and pedestrian traffic (be very careful). Drive through the archway and across the entrance to Q-Park (where my mouse is in the image). I had to put in a credit card to open the barrier, and then again to get out, at which point it charged me 18 Euros. I was there 3-4 hours. I don't know if the parking is per hour or a fixed amount. I just know it was expensive. This was a Monday. Better to use public transit if possible. Have fun.

If you heard about Van Gogh, even a little, the you must visit this place. Amazing collection of the artist work, and a journey to his interesting life. The museum is not crowded, and very well maintained, and the staff is very kind and welcoming. The line to the tickets wasn't very long, we had to wait around 8 mins, but note that you can't pay cash, only credit cards are accepted, another way is to buy tickets online before arriving.

You want to see & learn Van Gogh, then this is the place to go. The museum houses not only the paintings of Van Gogh and his contemporaries but also artifacts from his life that tell this great artist's life story.

They have a nifty multi media device to rent. It is worth spending the extra 5 Euros for it.

Photography inside the exhibit halls is not allowed.
Better to buy tickets on line ahead of the visit. If you want to buy tickets at the museum, there are a few ticket vending machines at the museum but it looks like these run out of tickets fast. You might find a few tickets for the day of the visit at an off location museum gift shop a little distance away from the museum.

We got in there and found it explosively fiery. A volcano is nothing compared to the bright brushstroke. We're not great art connoisseurs. But knowers of love. This man drew with the heart.

Awesome - of course. After all, it's Van Gogh! Very well organized museum, really enjoyed the special exhibition on his sunflower works. Plenty of people, so be prepared for crowds (depending on when you visit). We were there for about 2.5 hours.

A must visit place in Amsterdam.

I visited the museum alone and I spent 3 hrs there and was enough yet but the museum was about to close so I had to leave with regret.

A great place to visit Vincent , the be loved painter, it'se just a museum to see the masterpieces but also a place to get to know him, as he was a such passionate yet unfortunate person in the same time. He didn't gave up while the whole world let him down and in the contrary he left so many passion and love to this world

Simply fabulous. Audio tour is important to understanding the displays - though it would have been more convenient if the signage were clearer or the order of numbers more rational. Too easy to miss numbered stops.

In the art world, painting is pretty low down on my list of interests - but I do have an appreciation. This museum really knocked my socks off though. We just did the highlights audio tour, plus a few tangents, in roughly an hour and a half, and it was fantastic. As far as I'm concerned, the audio guide is a must. It presents a chronological story about Van Gogh, including many of his own words, and the words of those that knew him. The museum is beautifully laid out, and has much to offer even to those with a passing interest in art or history. If you're in Amsterdam, this is a must visit. Remember to book a few days in advance!

One of the most famous painters of the last 3 centuries. This museum shows what Van Gogh's life was like and describes his paintings with great detail: what he was going through in his life, what inspired or might have inspired him to paint them, the technique used and what he wanted to express.

It seems Van Gogh painted way too much, as it is a huge museum and most of the artwork shown is credited to him. Some of the letters he wrote to his friends and family, specially his brother Theo, are shown as well. There are some interactive activities through the walk to lessen the effort and make it more enjoyable.

The entry ticket is a little pricey. You can find a good offer of souvenirs at the souvenirs store inside, but beware as they do not accept cash, only cards. I bought the ticket online, maybe they do not accept cash at the entry either. Book in advance if you're visiting during peak season, otherwise, you might not find tickets available.

A really great experience, the entire history of his life and his art! Wasn't a big fan but went and really enjoyed it, the art work has to be experienced first hand as the colours and size of some paintings are fantastic, book in advance to avoid the queues! Also take pictures of your cloakroom tickets just in case you lose them!

Beautiful museum with a great permanent collection and amazing guest exhibitions. However it is so crowded (all three times I had visited it was) and ventilation is really bad- somehow they manage to make the area really stuffy but still cold- please work on that.

This is one of those museums in the weekend that sound be on anyone's bucketlist. The largest correction of van Gogh art is unprecedented. Many times the supporting exhibitions offer more inside information about the time of van Gogh, his inspiration or the inspiration of other artists.

Luckily the museum only allows entrance to people who bought their tickets online so they can spread the crowds and reduce the waiting times.

Too bad that they don't have lockers and a suboptimal coatrack system. But, that's a small blemish on a great museum visit.

Really expensive museum, crowded af. Say hello to wait up to 10 minutes just to watch one painting even early in the morning. Honestly, don't waste your time unless you're a really big fan, Moco, Stedelijk and Rijksmuseum are waaaaay better and more comfortable.

Everything I expected and more, a large collection of paintings and letters . Although 'The Starry Night' is in New York which I didn't realise. I especially enjoyed listening to the audio of Van Gogh letters from him to his family members .

The museum is very well set out so as to tell Van Gogh's story. Many beautiful pieces to touch your heart and let you see the world and people as Van Gogh did. Only drawback is that the museum is so crowded...but understandable that everyone wants to be there!

Well organised, and what can one say about the pictures? Some of the best paintings in the world curated marvellously. The shop was superb as well. It is quite expensive by Indian standards but worth every penny

If you like Art, this is the place to go. you may need to buy a ticket ahead of time and give your self 2-3 hours to enjoy. the rental head sets are good but not a must. give your self few minutes to enjoy that paint and look close y at Vangogh's style. Awesome!!!

Amazing to see original works of Gogh right in front of you, magical even. I do hope their LED lights don't fade the paints - NOTE: The excessive blue light present in all LED lamps fade colours as much as sunlight, often more.
