The way the paintings are organized is amazing and show the sad and beautiful life of Vincent
Though we missed seeing Van Gogh's most famous Starry Night (it was sent to New York for an exhibition), we thoroughly enjoyed visiting this Museum. The sequence of the exhibits help in appreciating not just Van Gogh's paintings but his life as well. The themes depict the state of his mind at different points of his life. Some interactive elements like the microscopic view of his paintings help us understand his brush strokes.
Not my favorite of the museum's in Amsterdam. If you love Van Gogh you should definitely see it. The layout was very smart. Overpriced compared to other museum options in the area.
Beautiful museum a few steps from the center of Amsterdam and the iconic city writing. inside the museum it is possible to admire some of the most famous works of the famous Dutch painter divided in the various rooms. Well-divided and well-structured areas. The museum also has audio guides with which to visit the museum. really very beautiful structure. We recommend buying k tickets online.
It is a well set up museum to look at the life, influences, and the art that came from his hands. It was interesting to read through his relationships and interactions of his peers.
Awesome museum with so many artworks but missing great art pieces of van Gogh
Amazing place to visit. It is an absolutely must-see collection.
A really brilliant collection of work. Including lots of pieces from Gaugin, Pissarro and more.
Had a starry starry fright when I realised they don't actually have a starry starry night. However, I'm not deducting a star because of my own ignorance, I'm sure the fact a museum in America instead of the Van Gogh foundation owns one of Van Gogh finest pieces is enough of a bug bare. The museum is spacious and big, however given you need to book a slot (During COVID) it was still exceptionally busy and some of the exhibits were switched off or defunct.
No need to tell anything. Everyone of course know about it,
Just one point: before attending please don't forget to keep your backpack and loggage in hotel or some safe box in City center, CAZ it's forbidden to Carry in.
If you love his work and want to immerse yourself into his life, mind, thoughts and emotions, this is the best place to be. A well curated museum with works of Van Gogh and other artists of his time that gives a wider view of the impressionist movement in the late 19th Century.
A must in Amsterdam. You will see everything in 3 hours. Dont be cheap, take the audio guide. It makes all the difference.
A must for anyone with an interest in Van Gogh, the museum lays out a time line of his work from his start in North Holland through Paris to his time in the asylum in Saint-Remy. Includes audio translations of many of his correspondences between friends and family as well as works of art from his contemporary influences.
Beautiful art and an amazing insight into the life of van Gogh, make sure to book online before you go to avoid the ques
Don t bother. Even with online reservations, this place is way too crowded. I didn t take the audio guide (it s 5 in addition to the 19 ) for the entrance, and there is not so much to see. And the audio guide is a nightmare since you have 15 people for each painting standing like zombies listening to their guide. Terrible experience.
And in case you don t know, this museum doesn t have Starry Night, the most famous Van Gogh painting.
I gave 5 stars, because of art works inside. But I was very tired thousands of museum visitors. I recomend to visit very early, if you want to focus at van gogh paintings, not at the costumes of visitors.
Amazing organization of the story of Vincent Van Gogh from the beginning to the end of his career. Audio guide a must have as it adds much more depth to the experience.
Not too crowded, great audio program, way to book online.
Victim of its own success. More like a Conveyor belt of van gogh pieces than a gallery with any atmosphere
Amazing in every way! It's really great even if you don't know a lot about Vincent Van Gogh
Loved the original collections! Didn't like the timed ticket of when to entrance.
I'm not big into art, bit this was an inspiring museum. It helped me recognize Van Gogh's work and appreciate the beauty of his paintings.
Definitely the place to go to learn about Vincent Van Gogh s life, and to see the largest collection of his works. The Potato Eaters , Wheatfield with Crows , Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette and many other masterpieces are exposed here; his letter exchange with brother Theo is remarkable, too.
The building is easily reachable by tram, and it is very close to the Rijksmuseum and the Moco Museum.
Does not include audio headphones, and it does not have starring night. Otherwise is great!
You must see Van Gogh s paintings in real life to appreciate how magnificent he was.
One of the best museums I ve ever visited. Was on a short stay in Amsterdam between the flights. You would need at least 2h to enjoy
I absolutely love this place and Vincent of course
It s a place where you can find real Love to this extraordinary Genius! Great Museum! Must see
One if the best collection of Can Gogh paints and art. The issue is always crowded, so buy tickets online so you do not have to wait in line.
The special exhibit are magnificent last we say Dutch French influence
Really liked this museum! It showed not only Van Gogh's art but also is life story. You can see that throughout his life, his art style changes and reflects his emotions and his way of seeing things. It takes more time than I thought but it's worth it. His paintings are joined by other paintings by artists that inspired him or inspired by him. I recommend this museum!
Love it! This place definitely worth the money you pay to get in. Pictures and periods explained nicely and there is a lot to see in the museum
Loved the Van Gogh museum. I had no idea how high his output had been. So many paintings and shifts of perspective and technique, beautifully curated. Give yourself at least two hours and take it slow.
One of the best museums that I've been to in my whole life. The museum imerges you into a complete van Gogh experience, telling you his life story and his path to becoming the legend he is until this day.
You might get a little spooked by the price (18 + 5 from the audio guide) but is worth every single penny. The audio guides are very good and worth paying for.
Although it doesn't have what I think is his most known work (Starry Night) the museum makes it clear to you that it isn't there and if you followed the story it is easy to know when and why it was painted.
Complementary work from other painters completes the experience. I easily spent four hours there (time flied). It is definitely a must do in Amsterdam.
Any person who does not like this place, will clearly have a different perception/outlook on life!
Beautiful. And the new remodelled museum is really great.
I come here every time I'm in Amsterdam. Great pieces. Very crowded though.
Really well-done museum - gives a great picture of the artist, his life, and influences. As well a a large number of his famous paintings.
Be sure to buy tickets on-line before going. I had forgotten, but luckily was able to buy them on the phone for a time only 45 minutes in the future.
a beautiful place with such an vibrant atmosphere. i cried when i saw the sunflowers. we planned to visit the museum for 1h30 but we didn't saw all paintings because it was closing so i suggest 2h of visit.
I have been here 7 years ago with friends and this time with my grown-up kids. We have all enjoyed 3 hours of visiting the museum till we were asked as others to leave at time of end of the day closure.! Better to read about it and the paintings and get a multimedia from the museum.
It is a very crowded museum, but it represents a deep dive into Van Gogh's work, as well as the work of his contemporaries and friends. You will find out he went beyond sunflowers and start nights. His interest in Japanese art for example is explored. There are also pieces which are surprising in other ways. It is a bit cliche, and very crowded, but still worth the visit.
The Van Gogh Museum is a must-see attraction if you're visiting Amsterdam. They do an amazing job telling the comprehensive history of Van Gogh and his works and they make sure to include other artists' work who were involved in his life. I'd say budget 3 hours if you want to get in depth and really see his works.
Definitely one of the most interesting art museums I have been too, everything is arranged so it tells the story of his growth rather than just being random paintings, and it has related stuff like diary excerpts too. The fact he's done a lot of nice paintings helps too!
Beautiful place that let you feel Van Gogh passion and drive for art. One of a must visit place in Amsterdam
It's a stunning g gallery. They do a great job of sharing his story through art. It takes a long time to get through it, a lot of standing.
Fantastic museum. My first time in an art museum. Amazing to see an artist grow and become one of the world's best
This is my all time favorite museum. Every year they come up with a new theme and everytime it gets better. The exhibitions are super interesting and their audio guides excellent. You feel really connected to Van Gogh and his wonderful paintings and letters. In my opinion it s the highlight of Amsterdam. And I love the shop and its books...!
Great time, worth the money and time. Go early for no lines. Must reserve a time in advanced online, as no tickets can be purchased at the museum.
Very impressive. The museum tells Van Gogh life story from his childhood to tragic death and his incomparable masterpieces! A must visit place in Amsterdam for both art-lovers and others!
Make sure that you really like art otherwise it is a bit boring. The paintings aren't even that impressive
If you are looking for the Starry night. It is at the Musuem of Modern Art, New York. Amazing collections of paintings and I was totally blown by the life story of Van Gogh
Wonderful, what a great museum. We loved every minute of it. Make sure to do this museum in the morning because it is very large and takes you through the life of Van Gogh. We found it fascinating and we're amazed at the collections which not only included painting's but also photos and his paints and palette. This was well worth the time and money.
Marvellous museum full of he masterpieces of the most famous dutch painter: Van Gogh. Definitely, if you're in Amsterdam you shall go, as you cannot find around the world such a great collection of his works. Only one bad note: there are not any discount for students above 18 years, and the full price is crazy: 17 euros for adults. Art is not commerce...
I really enjoyed my visit. Everything in it is really mesmerizing. I recommend buying ticket online and get the audio guide since it's really helpful with short yet fully informative narrative. The museum also really wants us to see from the perspective of Van Gogh (explained throughout the audio guide) thus helping us feel an emotional connection with the painter through thr painting. There is a strict no photography policy inside the gallery so I can enjoy the painting in peace. Will definitely go again in the future.
Very nice museum and a visit is a must when you go to Amsterdam
The museum itself I can't fault - it's fantastically executed, and as a showcase for Van Gogh and his life story, it is close to perfection. But, it is a victim of its own success - the crowds are just too much, and for me unfortunately, it spoiled the experience. There is a time slot reservation system, but it seems like the numbers they allocate to each time slot are too high. My suggestion would be to extend the opening hours into the evenings, and to reduce the numbers allocated to each time slot.
Huge huge selection of pieces from throughout the artist's life. Check out the Jappanese influence in some of his pieces. Also includes a wide variety of production from friends, influencers and associates of Van Gogh. The gift shop selection leaves a bit to be desired, but the art is top notch.
One star because I can't make a zero, this museum doesn't worth it, even if you get your tickets at 9 am you still have to queue ... to go inside , and inside you will have more people than masterpieces of Van Gogh, all his art is outside his country ... I am really sorry all the museums was nice instead off that one.
Very lovely! It was just a tad full, even though they have a system in place which let's in just a limited amount of people per time slot. Maybe 12h on a Saturday is just a very busy time.
Amazing museum I enjoyed it so much. The artwork is wonderful. Its worth it getting the extra multimedia tour for an extra 5 euros as it gives an interesting explanation for the art work. Its a good place to spend the day. The gift shop has lots to choose from. There is also a restaurant and cloakroom which is handy.
Great experience and I definitely recommend the Multimedia tour.
I can't begin to describe what a magical place this is but I'll try... The collection was curated so elegantly and the architecture really helps to make the place feel less crowded than it is. The cafe and gift shop were also top notch. Do not miss this wonderful place! I left feeling like I actually knew Van Gogh as a person because this experience really shares his inner life with you. I'll remember it forever.
Fantastic Museum, does a good job of displaying Van Gogh's work and that of his contemporaries, whilst doing a good job of taking you through his life.
Went close to closing, at 17:00, was still fairly busy. Would imagine it's even busier during the pre and post lunch times.
Not quite sure what to make of it really. If you buy into "art" and want to sit and contemplate if Van Gogh was any good then this is the place. Some of the better art was by other painters. All a bit too much for me.
Nothing special. Security is tight. Darkest museum I've ever visited. Feels like a racket to extract as much money from you as much as possible.
Great place, not overloaded with masterpieces. It allows you to think, not to skip. Highly recommended.
They let too many people in at once. It is difficult to see and impossible to appreciate the art. Go early and start on the 2nd or 3rd floor to temporarily avoid the crowds. Monday at 9am("not too busy") was very crowded.
A stunning museum. Lays out all of Van Gogh's paintings chronologically over several floors. Absolutely fascinating and fantastic value. Little queue when we went too. A must-see.
Where else you can see Sunflowers? You cannot beat that. That being said I am disappointed by the following:
1. It is too dark inside the building! Perhaps too much light damages the paintings but come on, what is the point displaying the art at all if it is hidden in the dark.
2. It is too damn hot inside the building! Again, maybe this is to preserve the paintings, but I highly doubt that so high temps I experienced there this summer were actually good for anything.
3. There is pretty much just a single stairwell leading to other floors with the exhibitions. Stairs are overcrowded and too narrow, people are bumping on each others, children and youth are either running those stairs or not looking where they are going, starring in their mobiles. Weird architectural design mistake, in my opinion, there should be at least one stairwell for upward traffic and the other one for opposite direction.
4. Maybe the price is OK for the Dutch but I consider it slightly above my idea of acceptable museum visit charge.
Nice layout, good pricing. Has many of his famous paintings: self-portraits, almond blossoms, sunflowers, haystacks, etc. Does not have starry night. Well worth the money.
Beautiful museum. Lots of information about the paintings as well as Van Gogh's life, including letters to/from his bother Theo and artist friends, and his progression and development as an artist. Highly recommend the multimedia guide.
Taught me so much more than I learnt at school. Wonderful art and nice to see so many masterpieces.
Worthwhile, I enjoyed how the art was laid out for each stage of his life, you could watch the growth before your eyes
Great place. Inside and outside spaces are orderly and clean. Easy to access with stairs and lift. Many paintings that always deserves a tour of.
Disappointed by the prohibition of shooting pictures. Maybe to force visiting the merchandise area, that we enjoyed anyway.
Visit and enjoy.
4 stars due to no pictures.
It is easy to get to the museum. Strong reccomendation is to purchase ticket on-line prior to the visit, as in that way you save precious time for enjoying museum. Great gift shop. Nice temporary exhibitions.
This was absolutely ridiculous on how they treat people at this museum!! Very, very rude workers not to mention on how absurd it is that I couldn t get a ticket after I have phoned them twice! It was my last day in the Netherlands , and no one told me that you had to arrange a ticket in advance. Drove all the way there from Delft just to find that I couldn t buy anymore tickets! Come on guys..... show some respect! This is not how you do business. Very disappointed!!
Good organized and modern museum. A must to see while beeing in Amsterdam.
Loved it here. Loads of letters to his brother on display. All his best works. Nice layout. Love the way the story is told in the museum.
Nice place pritty good staff cant seen to cope with giant lines
A very nice Museum that shows of Van Gogh's beautiful artworks and how his life as a artist was.
Terrible ticket system. If you haven't booked online in advance don't bother. The ticket machines are difficult to use and there is noone to speak to to help. Fully booked online for today and tomorrow so now can't go. Ridiculous that you can't buy tickets on the day.
The place is amazing especially the exhibition about Van Gogh and Japan which tells us how he took inspiration from Japanese painting and started initially by imitating and then it became an integral part of his painting.
Delightful experience! A must visit for any Van Gogh fan and I think an enjoyable visit even if you aren't. Reasonably sized museum with a nice flow. You'll most likely see some works you've never seen before and maybe see Van Gogh a little differently. Nice cafe, as well, to take a break in.
Great immersion in Vincent Van Gogh's life. Great selection of his works. Interesting to see who inspired him and who he inspired. Spacious museum, not too crowded. The temporary exhibition "Hockney - Van Gogh" was beautiful.
If you go here I highly recommend getting an audio device, and doing it early otherwise you'll feel rushed to finish because it does take a lot of time to really admire the art. Although Van Gogh's most famous paintings like the sunflowers and his bedroom always have a lot of people around them, so it could take some time to be able to see them
Very interesting and detailed. Reccomend reserving tickets in advance.
Really impresive. A truly nice experience. Must see.
Loved seeing some of Van Gogh s famous works like the Bedroom and Sunflower
