Van Gogh Museum s great! But it s not my point. You probably won t be surprised, but my point is the cafe there is great too! I had this delicious sea bass with mushroom sauce and veggies (and some unistagramable snacks), and I really enjoyed it! This was the best couscous dish of the ones I ve tried in Amsterdam! If you re in the city, don t hesitate, absolutely go there (1st floor, on the right)!

One of the best technically organized and well-designed museum let alone the collection. You can store a typical backpack here in the wardrobe despite the official website saying you can not.
Beat the queue online is worth it's money, especially when it's cold!
Plenty too see. Could easily spend a full day here. Unfortunately we only had a couple of hours so didn't get to spend as much time as we would have liked too.
I enjoyed looking at all of the works of Van Gough. If you enjoy art in any form you will definitely enjoy this. Be aware that in addition to Van Gough, you will find quite a few works by other famous artists. All in all a good experience that I would recommend to anyone fond of art gallaeries
Beautiful museum and collection, a real jewel presenting Van Gogh as the genius he was. I recommend to take the audio guide as it is a big part of the visit and also the best I've had so far (interactive and very well explained).
You need reserve in advance, even with the museum card. It s always too busy. And it s disappointing that it has so few collections, only about 40. More things are man made decorations, not like them. No photos allowed in most of the areas, even it s not necessary, because the same condition in Rijksmuseum is allowed only without flash. And in Rijksmuseum you will spend much more time to enjoy with the same price. But In Van Gogh museum, once is more than enough. You ll find better things In Rijksmuseum or even London national gallery.
A must see if you like the works of Van Gogh. Book your tickets online beforehand (some days in advance). You cannot buy the tickets at the museum anymore.
A must place yo visit when in Amsterdam. Lots of Van Gogh paintings plus Pisarro, Done Monet, etc. Nice gift shop. It is a pity that you are not allowed to take pictures. Buy ticket with set entry time at museum website to save admission time.
Timed tickets well spaced resulting in avoidance of over crowding that often occurs at major exhibitions in London. Wonderful, informative exhibition explaining the influence of Japanese art on his work as well as his famous, must see works. Buy tickets in advance online.
Very interesting museum about the life and artwork of one of the greatest Dutch painters. Buy the tickets online if you want to avoid long queues. I strongly recommend renting the audio guide, it gives you a more insightful perspective on Van Gogh work.
It's a sizable, well organized collection of Van Gogh's works. There's a gallery of his self portraits, one of his peasant paintings, another of his Japanese influenced art. There are also many paintings by his friends and influences, such as Gauguin. However, there was an annoying glare on almost all the paintings due to the lighting and glass protection. The 5 audio guide had an annoying interface and headset and was not very helpful - I'd skip it. The temporary exhibitions building was also closed for renovations when we visited. We spent 1.5 hours here. It's worth a visit if you are a fan of Van Gogh's art!
Visiting this museum was a very nice experience. We took the self guide which we really enjoyed because it explains the story behind so many paintings and provides lot of information. Also there are activities inside, they provide stationery if one wants to sketch. For those who enjoy art it is worth spending few hours here.
I only had 6hrs in Amsterdam so my visit was truly a whistlestop one, but well worth it. The exhibit is laid out as a timeline of Van Gogh's work and showcases the development of his technique & influences brilliantly. So glad I booked ahead for this exhibit, only regret was I didn't have more time. Fabulous.
A wonderful experience, great collection of Van Gogh's work as well as historical artifacts from his life, such as collection of letters to his brother. Would recommend purchasing tickets in advance to avoid the lines
It was a great experience. BUY YOUR TICKETS A HEAD OF TIME. You still have to wait in line to purchase tickets even if you have the Iamsterdam card. We purchased the tickets online after waiting an hour in line.
We had a great time and spend 3 hours looking at the art. They had a great audio tour which definitely complemented the art well.
Really interesting place with the audio guide (pay at museum). Very strict with bags and photos so be prepared to leave bags in the secure cloakroom. Audio guide technology a little flaky but well worth it - select from the long version, highlights or self selection, all based on numbers assigned to the paintings. Free entry with iamsterdam card but have to book a slot online (easy and plenty available even if only booking the day before you want to go)
An absolute must see! Van Gogh is one of the most appreciated artists in the world and in this museum not only can can admire a lot of his works, but you can learn more about his life, his process, the people who inspired him and were inspired by him. It is very well organized, very modern and accesible to most people. Entrance was 19 euros when I visite dbut there were discounts for students, groups and other various types of tickets. It was an amazing experience and I recommend it!
Make sure to take your time here, and come early (with e-ticket!) to beat the crowds. The permanent exposition is just great and tgeir changing expositions are always of the highest level. The current expo on show is David Hockey, the Joy of Nature. A must see!
Pretty cool because they had so much more than just Van Gogh artwork- they really try to tell you the story of his life through letters he wrote to his brother among other things. Worth a visit.
It was okay, but very pricey and they didn't have the starry night which was a big disappointment. Would like more interactive parts to the exhibit. They also don't let you take in your bags, which maybe they had a sign for, but I wasn't aware and probably wouldn't have gone in otherwise.
So worth it. I love the lower level near the gift shop and coat check for the family enterance. There was interactive children's art. Our daughter we able to feel the texture of the replica of the Van Gogh's sunflowers.
Van Gogh is one of my top favorite artists so this museum was an amazing experience. I highly recommend it, and recommend paying the little extra price for the guided interactive tour. It definitely added so much to the experience and what I learned about Van Gogh and his art
Some of the artists masterpieces can be seen on display, as well as other artists painting which influenced VanGogh. All is well described allowing visiteurs a chance to learn more about the artists private life.
The museum is a little to strict about no pictures at all. Yet the collection is really nicely presented. Don't miss the Hockney exhibition which is part of the collection until end of April.
It takes a certain amount of finesse to make an exhibition dedicated to one person very cohesive and engaging, and the Van Gogh museum gets full marks from me in this category.
Although a few tickets may be available for purchase at certain time slots at the museum door (very, very few), to ensure entry, the museum highly recommends buying the tickets online. You will have to choose a date and time, and the ticket is non refundable.
The exhibition was done in a way that made perfect sense, not only arranging VG s works according to when they were completed, but grouping them together and having descriptions discussing the period of work as a whole, like what was happening in VG s life that influenced his paintings, his work, him as a person, so everyone walks out of the museum more educated and inspired by Van Gogh.
Works from those he was inspired by, and those who were inspired by him are also on display, as well as letters between him and his brother Theo, and other family members and friends. The museum bookshop and gift shop also have really lovely things for sale.
Although the museum plan is pretty much open floor, the museum's decision to implement crowd control really makes a huge difference. While crowds are still large, there is not that suffocated feeling that sometimes happens in popular museums.
Even with the hordes of people, it was a pleasure to walk around and see the life of Van Gogh being played out, in the form of beautiful art, right in front of you. Loved it!
Truly a great experience. If you're ever in Amsterdam, please take the time to go. Great with a group or by yourself. Could have spent the entire day in there easily.
The audio tour is highly recommended. I have no education and had only passing interest in art, but the tour is designed to teach you more about Van Gogh and his style as you go, and I came to appreciate his work far more than I had imagined possible. I was able to come home from my trip with a greater appreciation for art, and place the Van Gogh pieces in my local museum within the context of his whole work. The gift shop was also incredible, and very on point...
The best collection of Van Gogh in the world. If you are an art lover, this should 100% be on your list of places to visit. Its well thought out, the layout is modern and easy to follow. Ticketing system however is a little complex. It's not necessarily quicker to buy in advance.
This museum brings you very close to the artist, his thoughts and life. The architecture allows for clear viewing of the art. The audio guide is exceptional.
Great collection, very well organized. I enjoyed the multimedia guide, it was very helpful to make the visit efficient. Apart from the Van Gogh collection, I found very interesting the exhibition of Millet. Certainly worth visiting as well.
This place is amazing for itself but the personnel is competent, nice and cordial, i lost my wallet and it was brought to me in 5 minutes when i asked, the visit is semi-interactive and it's nice
If you are a fan of Van Gogh then you have to come. The collection is extensive with the art, drawings, letters, etc. Would be nice to have more details in other languages but it does promote you renting the audio guide (I did not but wish I had). Buy ticket online to save time.
Very packed and the building has low ceiling, so the air circulation is not that good, which causes us headache, dizzy, and fatigue. However, the art pieces they present are masterpieces indeed!
An amazing experience, strongly recommended for everyone interested in European art, Vincent Van Gogh specifically or the Dutch culture in general. A great journey through Van Gogh's life, his development as an artist, his family connections, interactions with other painters and his followers. The exhibition is located over 3 floors with descriptions in both English & Dutch. I strongly recommend pre-booking tickets on-line, including any tourist discount cards, as it can get extremely busy & you may not be able to purchase tickets at the venue for the desired time. It's worth paying extra for an audio guide - during busy times it's hard to get close to the plaques with descriptions. Allow around 2 hrs for a full tour. There is an announcement made in various languages 30 min before the closing time, asking everyone to proceed to the ground floor.
I love Van Gogh, so I was guaranteed to enjoy it. I learned a lot along the way.
I saw so many master works like the Lilacs, Sunflowers, Bedroom in Arles, and works I never heard of. The Almond Blossoms he painted when his nephew Vincent was born were a personal favorite, and his Japanese-style works were a surprise to me.
Ground floor is all self-portraits and show how his technique and style developed over time.
First floor starts with his early, darker years (The Potato Eaters), then shows his friends and influences and how he developed his technique, and eventually his Japanese-style works.
Second floor is about his family, correspondence, his collections and drawings.
Third floor has some of his most famous works and described how pain drive his work.
Necessary to buy tickets in advance online, go in the morning, give it at least 3 hours, garderobe free, MUST DO!!! Enlightening, lot of info on Van Gogh, astonishing exhibition
Beautiful museum with much broader collection of Van Gogh than I've seen anywhere else. Silly, however that tickets can only be bought online, not on site at all, and that only ticket holders may go to the cafe. Crowds were good, but not so dense as to require such ageist steps (most older people might not have their phones to make on the spot reservations right on the steps of the museum. So would miss this great exhibit).
Loved this place!! I could honestly spend all day here! I learnt so much about art and different perspectives, as well as aboout Van Gogh's life and people who were very close to him! The audiotape provided by the museum was very insightful and easy to use and follow!
I really enjoyed my experience here. It is well laid out and easy to find. There is a lot of material covering the short life of this tragic maestro and lots to learn both visually and in writing. However the audio headset we got kept feezing/not working which was frustrating to say the least. Anyway it is well worth a visit and i would return.
An outstanding (and rather large!) collection of artwork from one of the most interesting artists in history. I feel like I learned so much more about Van Gogh than I ever knew, thanks to the story written across the walls of the museum. Busy place for sure, but large enough that it doesn t really matter.
This is my second time in 15 years to go here and it s always magic. The collection of his work and other impressionist masterworks are breathtaking up close.
We really loved this museum. Just the right size to not be fatigued by too many things to take in. I'd recommend going before 11am as it can get quite busy. It takes you through a nice timeline of his life & his work, also has a great gift shop.
Really great museum. Learnt a lot about Van Gogh s life with some really interesting pieces. There s a lot more here than I thought there was going to be. Definitely worth a visit even if you don t have much of an interest in art.
An amazing, well thought out museum showcasing the stages of Van Gogh's life, his progression as an artist, his struggle with mental illness and art in spite of it, and his relationship to his brother. I definitely recommend the audio guide, which walks you through the highlights or all the key pieces chronologically, over trying to guide yourself as it seems a little bit more difficult to navigate that way. Since the museum's collection comes from Van Gogh's nephew, they really strive to show you the true story of Van Gogh, that he made art and thought methodically about art in spite of struggling with his mental health, rather than only creating unique pieces because of it.
Beautiful museum, it supposed to last for 2 hours, but I made it in a little more than 3 hours. Highly recommend the audio guide for 5 euros and listening to the letter records. It gives a personal insight on Van Gogh's life and art. A must if you're in Amsterdam for a short period. Buy tickets online at least a day or two before the day you want to visit, because some entrance times can get sold quickly.
The only perfect part is the pieces themselves but the museum building itself is far from reflecting the historically priceless artworks inside. I would expect a better interior and exterior design to elevate the visitor experience
Such an interesting place. Depending on your love of art you can spend anything from 2-4 hours in there. Also, I recommend the headphones of you're by yourself. Just to give you more appreciation of the detail and the history.
